Imagine if they actually worked together instead of fighting, we might actually be able to play crysis.
lol - diggplug, on 03/27/2009, -0/+22Can't everyone just get along? Good to see NVIDIA standing up to Intel.
- BigManOnCampus, on 03/27/2009, -1/+18Not a good situation. Not smart to turn technology partnerships into expensive legal battles in a bad economy.
- hoju7887, on 03/27/2009, -0/+13They're SO in love with each other; just afraid to admit it.
- kcasper, on 03/27/2009, -0/+11It will be fun to watch.
- ghostlywind, on 03/27/2009, -0/+9Two of the biggest companies in computer hardware going at it, they should end this with a battle royale.
- oderdigg, on 03/27/2009, -1/+9I wonder how many times I need to re-log into Digg today... I'm counting 3 so far and yesterday I had to do it all day. Stop playing with the cookies damnit...
- damentz, on 03/27/2009, -0/+8NVIDIA usually responds to bad PR in an aggressive manner - this it not new.
- synapz, on 03/27/2009, -1/+8The not smart part was implementing draconian IP laws to begin with. Or any IP laws, for that matter.
- FruitFocker, on 03/27/2009, -0/+6They will end up settling after wasting millions of dollars. The only way it will affect customers is in higher prices. Bravo.
- inactive, on 03/27/2009, -0/+6So the world has come to the point where 2 managers cannot have a conversation without million dollar suits doing the talking...
This is how humanity ends isn't it?
In a courtroom, a judge and 2 people with arts degrees.... - ryanmsean, on 03/27/2009, -0/+5Intel was actually the first one with an integrated memory controller all the way back with the 80386SL. The Nehalem architecture is closer to the Core/Penryn architecture than to the NetBurst architecture and just because they reintroduced simultaneous multithreading doesn't mean it is a Pentium 4.
A Core/Penryn quad is an MCM package (not a native quad), but that doesn't mean it's bad. As you can tell processors like the Q9450/Q9550 which are MCM do just as well as a native quad Phenom II. A MCM package makes more sense economically when most people buy dual cores. AMD is just hurting themselves by introducing a native quad-core early to the mainstream market when not many applications utilize multiple threads. Now, Core i7 is a native quad-core just like the Phenom and Phenom II and this time more applications are multi-threaded.
HyperThreading is meant for highly threaded programs, and it is a very energy efficient way of getting performance. It is on the order of 30% more performance (again in a highly threaded program) for 10% more power. AMD still doesn't have anything like this.
Intel may have "copied" the HyperTransport bus and called it QPI, but they did it well, and it is actually faster for I/O and processor-to-processor communication than HyperTransport.
If AMD ever wants to catch up to Intel they need to work on their branch prediction, integer performance, and cache latency/bandwidth. - steeltormentor, on 03/27/2009, -1/+6Companies like Intel make me sick....it was Nvidia's patent to begin with.
- KMartSheriff, on 03/27/2009, -0/+4***** lyrics are *****.
- directedition, on 03/27/2009, -0/+3Could get very ugly for the consumer. Soured relations between NVIDIA and Intel could give a significant market advantage to AMD/ATI.
- inactive, on 03/27/2009, -0/+3i don't get logged out but the stupid reply view prefrence gets ***** everytime i close digg.
- themastersb, on 03/27/2009, -1/+4So Intel is butthurt that their ***** chipsets are now being replaced by Nvidia in most products?
- iamthearm, on 03/27/2009, -0/+2Intel is awesome and Nvidia is awesome. I don't know who to root for.
- lostinseganet, on 03/28/2009, -0/+2That is happening to me as well. Please fix your site digg.
- mabsark, on 03/27/2009, -0/+2i7 price >> Phenom II price
That is all. - iamthearm, on 03/30/2009, -0/+2They've been making great CPU's for a looong time. And by ***** you mean a company that wants to be successful. You probably don't like MIcrosoft either or any big corporation do ya? You probably looooove Apple. Even though they lie to their stock holders and charge a fortune for thieir junk PC's so you have to pay a fortune for a tech to work on it.
- norman619, on 03/27/2009, -1/+2They are? Maybe on nvidia based boards but they hardly count as "most."
- mabsark, on 03/27/2009, -1/+2Intel is far from awesome, they are a bunch of *****. They do make some good CPUs now though.
- tomz17, on 03/27/2009, -1/+2@dvs1313
It doesn't matter... the proof is in the pudding..
The i7 DESTROYS the phenoms at top-end (and the word destroys is really too kind given the HUGE disparity in benchmark results). Hell, even the low end Core2 Quads match the top-end phenoms in most benchmarks. AMD is only hanging on at the dollar/performance market, and is even taking a bruising there due to very aggressive pricing on the part of intel!
Disclaimer : before anyone starts swinging the fanboy bat, I own both a 9850 black edition AMD phenom, and several core2 duals and quads! - mabsark, on 03/27/2009, -1/+2To be fair, the i7s are a far superior chip. I'd still recommend the AMD Athlon X2 7750 Black Edition (which is a Phenom II) for £56 though.
- lostinseganet, on 03/28/2009, -1/+2If nvidia has substancialy higher prices ati will pounce.
- Warom, on 03/27/2009, -1/+2They are in the budget (and therefore most) motherboards.
- zer0hour, on 03/28/2009, -0/+1place your bets!
the stock is going to get equally competitive... - mabsark, on 03/28/2009, -0/+1Benchmarks are irrelevant? Since when?
i7 > Phenom II
i7 price >> Phenom II price - dvs1313, on 03/27/2009, -1/+1lmao you can keep your two pentium 4s sandwiched together and worship the i7 all you want, phenom 2 is true quad, intel took every innovation that amd made, onboard memory controller, l3 cache and combined it with the core 2 and netburst to make the i7 take your old non innovative cpu elsewhere
- inactive, on 03/27/2009, -2/+2i7 > Phenom II.
That is all. - daywalker2676, on 03/28/2009, -2/+2Yes! I WANT TO SEE BLOOD!
- techdever, on 03/27/2009, -1/+1nice try
- MikeSD34, on 03/27/2009, -2/+1Don't forget about AMD and Intel.
http://arstechnica.com/hardware/news/2009/03/amd-i ... - dvs1313, on 03/27/2009, -3/+2lmao you can keep your two pentium 4s sandwiched together and worship the i7 all you want, phenom 2 is true quad, intel took every innovation that amd made, onboard memory controller, l3 cache and combined it with the core 2 and netburst to make the i7 take your old non innovative cpu elsewhere not to mention the HT link that intel calls gigatextles lmao.... silly kids thinking that hyper threading makes their cpu faster.
- inactive, on 03/27/2009, -2/+1Innovation is irrelevant. Benchmarks are.
i7 > Phenom II. - magnus3d, on 03/27/2009, -3/+1I honestly thought nvidia and lintel would team together, like radeon and amd...
- dougfnny24, on 03/27/2009, -5/+2DOWN WITH INTEL !@!@
- magnus3d, on 03/27/2009, -9/+3They are just:
