- bigmahlman, on 06/15/2009, -4/+29Half the power, double the performance! Now intell just needs to get that dual core atom ready for netbooks, and we will be gaming on netbooks.
- Moocowz, on 06/16/2009, -0/+20It's cool, apple won't update to the 200M series until the 300M series is out
- diggan8, on 06/16/2009, -6/+24I just don't see the point in gaming on netbooks.... seriously, are you really going to want to run Crysis on a whopping 10 inch screen?
- KMartSheriff, on 06/16/2009, -3/+19Gaming on netbooks? Can someone please explain the recent fascination with netbooks? I thought the appeal was to have a small portable computer for internet browsing at a very low cost. So why in the world would you want a powerful GPU inside a tiny space on a 10" screen? I just don't see these GPU's being aimed at the netbook market.
I'm sure I'll get buried by Linux fanboys for asking these questions; "How dare you question netbooks! Burry!" - phrozen209, on 06/16/2009, -2/+16damn, just as I bought my MBP...
- archer75, on 06/16/2009, -2/+15maybe apple will now be able to put some real power in those imacs and macbook pros.
- ChileanGoD, on 06/16/2009, -1/+12You always talk with questions?
- th3heretic, on 06/16/2009, -1/+10I want my gtx 300
- anthropodeus, on 06/16/2009, -0/+8i think you need a better simile. since urine is not very viscous, something that "runs like piss" should perform well.
- Sedako, on 06/16/2009, -0/+7These are MOBILE GPUs, hence the M. Unless you're somehow building a laptop, your purchase will be justified for at least another week!
- squelched, on 06/16/2009, -3/+9why not, ultra portable crysis ftw
- RyanistheRyan, on 06/16/2009, -1/+7is it a bad thing?
- sirbeta, on 06/16/2009, -0/+6Man's fascination of making things smaller and stronger. It's not practical, but it is cool.
- anthropodeus, on 06/16/2009, -3/+8so i guess you've never owned a gameboy?
- inactive, on 06/16/2009, -0/+5Are you building a laptop?
- RyanistheRyan, on 06/16/2009, -0/+5How long have the 200M series been out? This article is only talking about new ones additions to the line?
I know I've seen drivers for 200M on nvidia.com for the last month or two? - MyEyesWideOpen, on 06/16/2009, -2/+7I second that motion. Get with Linux -- NOW!
- DarkHornet, on 06/16/2009, -0/+4Agree with above; especially considering that Apple won't be releasing anything new for a little while now, since this line just came out; but when they do, you might eventually be envious with all the upcoming tech about to be released by the end of this year.
- DevinWatson, on 06/15/2009, -5/+9I just hope they release an x86 CPU soon, I'm tired of Intel dominating the market...
- donut726, on 06/16/2009, -0/+4just pick up the new MBP. this is probably the best time to get a Mac right now with the free iPod, free printer promotion going on and the MBP just recently updated. it won't get another significant update until the end of the year at the earliest.
- themastersb, on 06/16/2009, -3/+7More like Nvidia +10 ATI +0
- dagamer34, on 06/16/2009, -0/+3Probably not going to see another update for Macs until Nehalem finally goes mobile along with 32nm manufacturing process. Best guess is probably Feb. or March.
- Druid72, on 06/16/2009, -0/+3Geforce 8800 GTX still performs good enough to run most of today's top notch games. Well except for Crysis. I personally believe that graphics technology is slowing down for the PC gamers, I mean the original Xbox in it's fourth year had nothing on PC's Half Life 2 graphics and Xbox's Half Life graphics were terrible, and now the Xbox 360 in it's fourth year is still good enough to compare side to side with the PC. The new graphics cards are all about size and power usage not about raw power. If there is no powerful hardware, developers will not make games that would use that hardware.
- OiOiOiBoy, on 06/16/2009, -0/+3or buy stock, you can't buy stock on a console.
- bionh, on 06/16/2009, -0/+3you can't alt tab out of a console game to watch porn, duh
- aLuckyStar, on 06/15/2009, -15/+18NVIDIA +1
ATI +0 - RyanistheRyan, on 06/16/2009, -0/+3Yes I understand that M equals Mobile.
But if you go the nvidia.com
Search drivers
and choose 200M
you will see that they have had drivers available for a while. Granted they could have just updated the page and had those old dates there, but I remember seeing them atleast a week or two ago. - Kragnerac, on 06/16/2009, -1/+4Just because a new line of GPU (or any other piece of computer hardware) has been announced doesn't mean yours (seeing as your MacBook Pro is brand new) is obsolete. :)
- inactive, on 06/16/2009, -0/+2but in the desktop space the ati 3300 HD is king.
- Macintoshreader, on 06/16/2009, -0/+2Did you mean AMD?
As far as I know, ATI is not a company. - pashok99, on 06/16/2009, -2/+4Uh, I'm a Linux fanboy, and I agree with you.
- andycr512, on 06/16/2009, -0/+2My ancient GeForce 4 MX 440-SE ran it fine last I tried, so something is definitely wrong there...
- colinjnk, on 06/16/2009, -0/+2Pick it up, it's well worth it despite the new GPUs. It's the best time to buy a new MBP. Plus, if you're buying a MBP w/9400M, I wouldn't think you'd even be doing any heavy duty gaming on it anyways.
- TnTBass, on 06/16/2009, -0/+2Sadly, most netbooks have Windows XP installed. I have a hard time finding pure Linux netbooks anymore.
I think people really want a super powerful laptop for $250. Hence they buy netbooks when they really want laptops, then tell the netbook makers to make them more powerful because they can't do everything a laptop can do. Most people have totally missed the point of netbooks. Netbooks are low cost devices that can surf the net, email, IM, or play music. They are not low cost laptops you can use to work on your massive excel sheets when you're out of the office, watch HD movies, or play games. - skit4king, on 06/16/2009, -1/+31 mobile gaming rig coming up.
- themastersb, on 06/16/2009, -0/+2I'd be more concerned about that new battery that was announced.
- inactive, on 06/16/2009, -1/+3NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW!
- Stevethegreat, on 06/16/2009, -0/+1GTX 295 is -about- 3 times faster than 8800GTX, with a lot more features, released in lower price than that of 8800GTX (at that time) and all this in a 2 (and a few months) time. The GFX industry in fact evolves faster than ever (to my surprise even), it's just that nobody cares any more because nobody makes use of this new-found power (like it was always happening back in the day). Unlike what you may think new cards do no just let you play the latest but also -most importantly- drive innovation in the software department.
Since PC gaming died and console kiddies (like the one below this parent post) are pleased with the 2005 technologies they are presented (just compare Stalker Clear Sky with ANY console game, it's laughable), innovation stalled and it would be very interesting to see how the next gen of consoles would handle it (now that there are no experienced coders in new technologies). Hardware evolves as fast as ever, it's software that has the problem (due to the dictatorship of closed consoles)... - Paranoidmarvin, on 06/16/2009, -0/+1Nah.. I'd say the score is closer to:
Nvidia: +73
AMD: +70
It's been going for a while - DarkHornet, on 06/16/2009, -2/+3By your logic, any computer with an Atom CPU is defined as a netbook. I don't remember seeing any netbooks out there with anything more than an Intel integrated gpu, or a low-end ATI or Nvidia mobile, at best. Hell, even Ion netbooks aren't out quite yet (unless I missed hearing about one).
And I can tell you, even the highest end video card is going to be bottlenecked into oblivion by the Atom. - justcharlie, on 06/16/2009, -0/+1pick up one of the new macbooks with student discount
- dagamer34, on 06/16/2009, -0/+1M = Mobile.
Mobile chips are always behind their desktop brethren for cost are manufacturing reasons. - Step1Mark, on 06/22/2009, -0/+1What do you think?
- InfiniteNothing, on 06/16/2009, -0/+1Just think, if you buy now, when the new stuff comes out in 3 years or whatever it'll be all the easier to justify buying a new computer.
- TheStrangeBrew, on 06/16/2009, -0/+1I've been disappointed with Nvidia's mobile gpu. Two years ago I bought an XPS with an nvidia 7900gs go (something like that) and after a year (just after the 1 year warranty) it fried on me. The replacement for a video card is ridiculous in terms of price and even worse is it's hard to find. My XPS has been sitting in my closet collecting dust for about a year.
- OiOiOiBoy, on 06/16/2009, -0/+1Just another reason why I'll wait until after Apple shoves all their notebooks down us college kids so they can bring out fresh hardware updates while cleaning their stock
- InfiniteNothing, on 06/16/2009, -0/+1@freakFlag OMG you're a fear monger.
- InfiniteNothing, on 06/16/2009, -0/+1Naw, this stuff won't come out on MBPs for a while and by then there'll be a new proc or something to wait for.
- tonycomputerguy, on 06/16/2009, -1/+2Small package + powerful graphics = a 10" ePenis that is easy to whip out in public and humiliate your peers / attract opposite sex. It's like a sports car for the average non-geek male in mid-life crisis. Geeks have mid-life crisis' twice a year... AT LEAST.
