- danhuard, on 10/12/2007, -14/+85nice work! check out mine and kevin's how-to for the 360 on thebroken!
http://revision3.com/thebroken/ep4
the kid did a great job though, props! - negativefx, on 10/12/2007, -8/+68except for EA. ***** EA!
- Yashar, on 10/12/2007, -6/+39Yes! I can finally play my *backed up* games.
/sarcasm - burningpenguin, on 10/12/2007, -6/+35I'm really glad you shared this with us today
- chris9902, on 10/12/2007, -4/+34that goes without saying.
I'm talking about people who make real games not roster updates. - Muyoso, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19The thing about this hack is that it is still unable to run unsigned code. That is, you will not see new dashboards or a successor to XBMC with this mod. You cannot run games off of your hard drive because the software on the 360 is unable to do that. When they actually crack the 360 and not just the DVD drive, you will see a bunch of awesome mods to it, allowing streaming of Divx, running of programs like XBMC360 or whatever they want to call it, running of emulators, and pretty much all of the things the xbox could do, but just better. I cannot wait. My modded xbox is amazing and is simply great as a media center pc.
- Imagine3, on 10/12/2007, -5/+22It doesn't matter. It is not illegal to mod your gamming system. It only voids the warranty. Now they might be able to get you on downloading pirated games, but if I remember correctly, they were using a backed up game that they had bought. And I do believe the DMCA allows you to 1 back up copy of digital entertainment for archival use.
This would not mean that they could then give that copy to someone else to use. - Raingwc, on 10/12/2007, -6/+22This isnt anything new guys..This firmware hack has been around for probably more then a month.
- aptmunich, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19Haha, he filmed an iptv episode with kevin rose showing you exactly how to do it - I doubt they're worried about the FBI finding them on digg...
- Bradl3y, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19You are wrong, live works perfectly fine with burned games.
- Bradl3y, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13You do NOT need a samsung drive. I have installed a hack on my xbox 360 hitachi drive. While I will not say that I don't download games, I do make backups of games I own, I have had more than one game ruined by the ring scratches that happen when people who don't know tilt my console with a game running.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Anyone know of a place online to buy a pre-modded 360? I got a PS2 this way and it's been great.
- roseysdaddy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8you are joking, right?
- Textbook, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Hahaha, I just got home from class and had a message that my video made front page of Digg. That's hilarious. I made it a while ago. I have no idea who the submitter of the story is, so even though it has the site url in the description, I promise you it's not spam. I'm not sure how many people actually visited the site after watching the video, but I hope it holds up. It's on a shared host, I can't believe you guys didn't bring it down yet. I may have to call up my host and congratulate them. Anyways, enjoy the video Diggers, and if you are going to try it out, download the text tutorial from the site, it is updated.
- Gerz1219, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11You might be able to go on Live right now, but then you'd have to live with the fear that any day, they'll send out a patch that bricks the system.
Frankly, I prefer a system to have foolproof copy protection. It's the only thing that will make me actually buy the games. Once DiscJuggler came out and you could download and burn a Dreamcast image in 30 minutes, I saw any purchase as a waste of money. I wound up with about 80 games laying around, many of which I only played for an hour or so. Cheapens the whole experience. It helps me to know that when I dropped $60 on Gears of War, there was no viable alternative. - krazytom, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12way more than a month and you need the Samsung drive.
- aceman118, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11try 6 months.
- Bradl3y, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11Get a computer.
- knodi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6boo i want it to run homebrewed apps.
- Metlprocker, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Imagine3:
"And I do believe the DMCA allows you to 1 back up copy of digital entertainment for archival use."
The DMCA states you can not break the copyprotection and doing so, or develping a tool to do so is illegal. Yes the modchip is legal, but not backing up a copy protected game, if you own it or not - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Because an Xbox360 disc is reported as an Xbox360 disc, and a backup is reported as a...? yeah, that's right, as a DVD-R. There is more to a DVD than just the RAW data. The DVD has identifying info (that you cannot change).
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7live works because this hack doesn't mod the actual xbox firmware...
Sure MS might develop a way to detect it (obviously if they have, it's either not a priority or not BIG enough yet) but for right now live works fine. - 9tendo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5What's he experiencing? No network connectivity? What drive does he have? Did he try updating his flash? How does he know he got banned? You can get banned from live for different reasons other than a flashed 360.
- jmdajr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Just an excuse for piracy
- cwestpha, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10Huh, I have been doing this for months and months and months. Seriusly, I now have 12 games I own that I can run off of copied media. Its great for LAN parties and protecting the originals from little kid hands. :p
- 9tendo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4This is straight from one of textbook's tutorials:
"The second security measure is media locking. The
default.xex (game executable) is restricted to run only from a certain
type of media. For example, all Xbox 360 games are restricted to run
only from “Xbox 360” media. Game demos downloaded from Xbox
Live are restricted to run only from “Xbox 360 Hard Drive.” Xbox Live
Arcade games aren’t restricted at all; they can run from any media.
Before the firmware hacks, if you were to copy an Xbox 360 game
and try running it from “DVD+R DL” it would obviously see that it
wasn’t “Xbox 360” media and refuse to run it because of the media
restriction.
This media restriction is what the firmware hacks bypass. The
firmware fakes out the Xbox 360 into thinking that any media is “Xbox
360” media. You copy your game to DVD+R DL, insert it into a
firmware-hacked drive, and instead of returning “DVD+R DL” to the
Xbox 360, the drive says it is an “Xbox 360” disc and it then plays the
game. As you can see, the firmware hack does not bypass any
signature protection whatsoever. That is why the Xbox 360 backups
have to be 1:1 unedited backups of the Xbox 360 games." - MiDri, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Well dvds (and cds for that matter) that you burn are a different makeup physically then ones you buy. The ones you burn are chemically etched so that when the burner applies certain amount of heat to a spot there is a little bubble that indents or pops out. Media that you buy from the store, like games and movies, are pressed, and created in a diffrent fashion. If I remember correctly the DVD+R/RW have built in signatures that show what type of media they are (you can't change it.)
- 9tendo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Banned from playing xblive on their xbox1s not xbox360s you mean. No 360 has been banned off of live w/ dvd fw hacks. Oh and if you have a modded Xbox1, 100% fool proof way to keep from getting banned: 1softmodded hdd + 1stock hdd + an xtender device to switch hard drives- this way if you want to get on live just switch to your stock drive. And if you do happen to have a banned xbox, you can unban by flashing a new unbanned eeprom
- Nightfall, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Great video tutorial. I am considering getting an Xbox360 this year, and I love the mods I applied to my original Xbox. Might have to do the same here.
- 9tendo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Urusai: textbook is a huge contributer to the xbox-scene forums (many text and pics) and definitely knows his stuff. Don't let his age fool you :)
dbr_onix: XBMC for 360? No such thing yet. I doubt we'll see any hardmods aside from the dvd firmware hacks.
richofsilence: Sure you can go on live with your backups and no one has been banned, YET. Aside from getting banned, there's also a DVD version check that was introduced in the fall update that can cause your modded 360 to go E66 (easily fixable with re-flash). Unmodded Xboxs have been affected by this fall update too - E77 errors, lockups+redlights, etc. And if i'm not mistaken, there's another live update set to be released today - 9tendo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Majority don't care. If MS wanted to they could crush x-s and xbhacker but they're not.
- tyler1175, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I go on live with backups all the time they have stealth patches but it's not like it matters though microsoft hasn't done anything to try and stop people
- DarkJC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Aren't the new 360s being sold getting their boards covered in epoxy so you can't get at the drive/drive firmware?
- dland, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Do you enjoy the games you play? Do you like playing on line? Do you think Microsoft has put out a good product? Then support the developers and buy your stuff legally. I know it's expensive, but if you want to keep getting good stuff like Gears and Halo, then support them.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I think the hitachi works too (at least there are guides for it, maybe with limitations?)
- FreddieD, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I can't. I tried to put a PC in my living room and my wife almost killed me.
- aptmunich, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I'd imagine it's very unlikely that Microsoft would purposely brick their customers devices on an assumption.
Lawsuit anyone? - Bradl3y, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Bricking by mistake is different than intentionally bricking. It would be very unethical and possibly illegal for them to brick your 360, no matter what reason they have. Now banning from live and making it so games wont play until you unmodify it would be more likely.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I'm a fan of modding. I admit, I don't like the prices of most games. Most might not agree with what I do, but to each his own.
However... I wouldn't mod my 360 mainly for the possibility of getting banned from Xbox Live, which is pretty much the entire soul of the system.
They need to make chips so that they can be stealthed. As in, you boot the system and the chip completely deactivates as if it's not even on there to begin with. Then when you wanna play copied games, you reboot (disconnect your internet connection first) and turn it on. - Lynxpro, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4
So Dan, are you going to "back up" the Burger King Xbox360 titles? :) - 9tendo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2There's a tutorial on how to remove it with a heat gun. There's also a new Hitachi 0078fk drive that's been dumped and hacked but currently the only way to flash it is to desolder the firmware and reprogram with an external programmer. Much harder to do than the other drives
- Textbook, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2How about going to the site and downloading the free tutorial. It explains everything you need to do, is full of links, full of screenshots, and is basically noob-friendly. I agree with you, watching a video and going by that alone is a very bad idea. But, if you have an awesome text tutorial AND a video to go along with it, that's about as easy/good as it gets.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2While we're on this topic, can anyone explain WHY straight up copies can't run in any system?
Easy question, but the method behind this baffles me.
Say you take a PS1 game, or hell, a 360 game, and use a burner to copy the RAW data (errors included) straight to your HD. You then burn the game to a DVD of your choice. Even PC games can detect if it's not the original disc.
How does the system know it's not the original disc if you're copying everything exactly as it appears on the disc? - Bradl3y, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3They do, they have firmware switches you can install, but you still have to worry about the xbox software checking for the mods silently, even when not on live, and then next time you connect to live, whether the mod is active or not, your xbox 360 software could report to live that it recorded modifications, and you could end up banned anyways. I don't worry about it too much because I don't use live daily and I read news sites daily, so I'd probably hear about bannings before i get banned. If i get banned, oh well, not many games are worth playing on live anyways.
- burndive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It's only a copyright violation if you have to break the encryption in order to make and encryption-free back-up copy. There is no reason to unencrypt a backed-up game disk. It's like making a backup copy of the encrypted files in your iTunes library. It's fine, and it's all you need if you don't want to play the files on anything but iTunes or an iPod.
- slamm6, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Hey man, don't forget the first rule about Usenet.....
- lokon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2hitachi's work just fine. you have to use a slightly different method for them though. still easy, and can be done.
- 1021, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5@negative
I don't know about you but I will support Spore by buying it legally - this will be the one exception to the screw EA rule to pay tribute to a truly visionary game maker Will Wright. :-)
Agreed? - moebis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow, that was boring, but cool none-the-less. Someone mentioned installing Linux... that would be interesting. After playing Oblivion on my XBOX 360, I can't say I would want to pirate it, just too good of a game, I'm proud to have paid for it, the developers deserve it. Same story with Half Life 2, but I realize the usefulness of this comes in handy for the *****-hats that force crap $50 games on us. It's a balance ya see.
Had something else to say... can't remember, but lest we forget, a hack, always a good path to freedom. -
