- WiseWeasel, on 01/04/2008, -8/+61/me strokes his MBP
That makes you hungry, doesn't it... Yes, you're a naughty laptop, aren't you? Not letting me rip any more DVDs cuz you're so full of music and video... - kyouteki, on 01/04/2008, -1/+32The drives are 3mm taller than standard 2.5in hard drives. These won't fit in most laptops. They made the drive higher capacity by adding another platter.
- cawfee, on 01/04/2008, -0/+2710 years from now we'll look back at this and laaaaugh.
- quomen, on 01/04/2008, -1/+27I can't wait till CHEAP 1tb flash drives.
- ChromaVita, on 01/04/2008, -1/+25So bought a 250GB HD, then exactly 2 days later i see that WD release a 320GB model. Now hitatchi is releasing this? Gotta love technology.
- silentphoenix, on 01/04/2008, -3/+23i can hardly wait for the 1TB mobile hard drives
- arcooke, on 01/04/2008, -2/+18We've already hit 1TB consumer hard drives.. and now 500GB mobile hard drives. I think now it's time to turn our attention away from mechanical data storage and focus on solid state. Hard drives are the most important part of a computer, and they're also one of the things that fail the most.
By 2015, mechanical hard drives better be the incandescents of computer technology.. that's all I've got to say. - jmpeagle, on 01/04/2008, -0/+14I can't wait for the hardness to go away
- TheKrillr, on 01/04/2008, -0/+11That's why you should only take ONE viagra...
- letierri, on 01/04/2008, -0/+8I'll still be sticking with 7200rpm 200gb Hitachi drive in the macbook until they come out with a 7200rpm version of those.
- Dokument, on 01/04/2008, -2/+101TB of ram. : )
- BossKey, on 01/04/2008, -3/+10You guys continue to spread the myth that iPod is "trendy" and that the other players are better because of "features." The feature debates are strictly geek talk, not the way most people think. The iPod is "trendy?" The iPod has been around for too many years to be a trend. Its staying power can be explained by marketing and not its features, but the way they are implemented.
The public buys iPods because they are simple to use (i.e. user interface, often forgotten by the nerdiest nerds) and not overloaded with bloat, making them easy to use. In some ways the Zune is better (I'll never buy one, though).
It's like saying a Mac is trendy when so many people are buying them for practical reasons. The former Windows business users and Unix fans buying Macs are not doing it because it's trendy. Same with the iPod. There is more to it than that. - robbh66, on 01/04/2008, -2/+9I'm hoping it will fit in my MBP... apparently this drive is 3mm taller than the standard :/
- MyDiggIsBig, on 01/04/2008, -3/+9Holy refried beans thats a lot
- epuiatti, on 01/04/2008, -0/+6Because its made for the mobile market RTFA!!
- Kragnerac, on 01/04/2008, -3/+8So now the PS3 can be upgraded to 500GBs of space? Awesomeness.
- kahrn, on 01/04/2008, -0/+4I'd prefer to see cheaper, faster, smaller and more power efficient drives (perhaps flash drives!). Seriously, the average joe would benefit much more from speed than capacity that he'll never use. 500GB on a notebook? Unless you're incapable of storing all your stuff on a NAS or desktop and then docking the notebook to them to get the stuff you need, you don't need 500GB. In which case, 500GB might not be enough so you should just get a NAS anyway!
We want faster drives for cheaper price. Not just higher capacity drives. - turpenine, on 01/04/2008, -3/+6but can you put it in your backpack?
and not look like totally *****? - inactive, on 01/04/2008, -0/+3Asus M70 is the first notebook using two of these new Hitachi drives, giving you 1TB.
http://www.i4u.com/article13820.html - kyouteki, on 01/04/2008, -1/+4Sorry, but you need a 9.5mm tall drive (or smaller, I guess) to fit into a Macbook Pro.
- weiran, on 01/04/2008, -1/+4Yeah I wouldn't say mobile HDs "leaps into the stratosphere today", as it has basically the same density as the Toshiba but with another platter making it taller. Certainly wouldn't fit into most laptops.
- imbob, on 01/04/2008, -1/+4THE FUTURE IS FLASH DRIVES!!! ohh wait my crap just broke ***** sandisk.......................
- Pixelpaws, on 01/04/2008, -0/+3I'm rather looking forward to that "Rotational Vibration Safeguard" stuff. As I use my laptop in a truck, it's constantly vibrating, and I'm fairly sure that contributed to the early failure of my last hard drive.
- jiminizer, on 01/04/2008, -1/+4It's pretty pointless really... sure they made a small 500gb drive, but it's not /quite/ as small as a standard laptop drive. It costs more than a 3.5" drive but doesnt fit in any laptop not specifically designed for it...
- Shaman760, on 01/04/2008, -2/+5I'm waiting for cheap solid state drives. But until then.....argh!!
- WiseWeasel, on 01/04/2008, -1/+4If not, then I'll be turning in my geek cred at the door. : P
- lateralus, on 01/04/2008, -0/+3And orally, next time.
- da_bradler, on 01/04/2008, -0/+3"According to Hitachi, although the drive itself will occupy a 2.5-inch chassis, the drive mechanism inside the drive enclosure will be a bit thicker than the usual height of a drive. Typically, drives are 9.5mm in thickness; the 500GB drive will be 12.5mm, due to the additional disk platter."
so ya it's a bit thicker... I'm not to sure what kinda laptop would leave 3mm of space above or below the hard-drive. obviously any laptop or device that used this hard drive would have to taken special account for it. Don't plan on fitting one of these in my macbook pro is all I'm saying. - fidunderground, on 01/04/2008, -0/+2How about 1TB miniSD or SD card? :P
- WiseWeasel, on 01/04/2008, -1/+3ROFL, I was referring to the MacBook Pro, but that works just as well...
- anonymous666, on 01/04/2008, -0/+2Upgraded mine with a 9.5mm drive last week. PS3 HDD cradle only supports 9.5mm drives. However I didnt measure the exact width of the opening/hole/chamber/whatever whether it can support 12mm drives or not.
- inactive, on 09/11/2008, -0/+2that's cool and all, but far too expensive.
I never pay more than $0.20/gb for a 3.5" drive, and only slightly more for a mobile one. eBay is a blessing - winmywii, on 01/04/2008, -0/+29 series.
- inactive, on 01/04/2008, -0/+2Have you tried using a gel cushion? I got some gel sheets from this one place (look it up online) and now my external drive has a shock absorbant gel pad where it mounts to the casing. Its still alive, though my 750 i got died. Good thing i never used it for anything other then ripping my dvd's.
- ussoldier, on 01/05/2008, -0/+1Uh, I'm looking at the site for the laptop with 2 of these in it for a terabyte... and uh... that's not an Asus laptop in the picture, with the cut away of the two installed drives... dude, that's a Dell. http://www.hitachigst.com/portal/site/en/menuitem. ...
- SD70MACMAN, on 01/05/2008, -0/+1Something tells me the 19 year-old sorority girls in my classes who wear Uggs and designer clothing aren't buying the Macs for "practical reasons".
- theblacknight, on 01/06/2008, -0/+1The other unimpressive thing is that by increasing the number of platters 50% (from 2 to 3), they managed to get 36% more capacity according to the article. (The article also claims that the drive has the highest capacity per platter, so hopefully they just can't do arithmetic instead of really getting their numbers confused.)
- AutoShovel, on 01/04/2008, -0/+1The starting point was probably developed from the 320GB model before they added the extra platter. Thats a lot more bits per track than the average 120GB laptop drive so effectively you are reading/writing about 30% faster at the same RPM. Having the extra platter reduces latency as you don't have to seek so much.
- marx2k, on 01/04/2008, -1/+2Sure, if you don't have access to Amarok.
Anyway, Zune doesn't even operate with Linux. Flawed by design, Zune is - Vraja, on 01/21/2008, -0/+1I don't think you understand my comment.
If apple spent, for example $1,000,000 on an advertising campaign
that $1,000,000 could be used to develop a better screen aspect ratio, or in this case, a solid state option for their devices. I am not saying that they don't develop their products, just they could be even more...
(also there is a long argument for restricting the development/ output using the supply and demand economic model, but that's just long...) - robinthehood, on 01/04/2008, -0/+1nice. laptop HDDs up to 500gb yet they still don't bother getting the RPM above 5400... Way to keep the bottleneck alive!
- CNeovitch, on 01/04/2008, -0/+1Sweet. Must get one.
- kyouteki, on 01/04/2008, -0/+1It's 3mm taller than a standard drive, which is 9.5mm tall.
- Vraja, on 01/13/2008, -0/+1See, the consumer wants larger capacity solid state drive, so where the hell are they!?!
- Vraja, on 01/13/2008, -0/+1Amen to that!
- sammyc53, on 01/04/2008, -0/+1There are not that hot. I only go with 7200 RPM drives now.... I have benchmarked the differences, it's substantial!
- celkin, on 01/04/2008, -0/+1*reading your comment from the future while holding a 512TB hard drive*
- inactive, on 09/11/2008, -1/+2thank you for your rant on ipods. It's unfortunate you got dug down by the 'trendys'
- branjb, on 01/04/2008, -2/+3It puts the lotion on the skin.
- Vraja, on 01/13/2008, -0/+1No, I'm saying IF they had spend the money from the advertising, on research and development then their technology would be ever greater!
