- furtwan1, on 10/12/2007, -16/+119you have no style. this thing looks bad ass.
- jasnmb, on 10/12/2007, -6/+75They called it Ultimate to match the name for Windows Vista Ultimate.
- piper999, on 10/12/2007, -8/+62Yes but does it have a tilt sensor?
- punchingjudy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+50Newsflash: there were backlit keyboards before Apple did it.
- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -19/+64Looks nice, kinda MacBookish. Why did they ruin it by calling it "ULTIMATE" though??
- uncleLeo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+49that's going to be...REALLY expensive
- black|math, on 10/12/2007, -7/+50Apple Users Read up: Stop comparing a keyboard to your Macbook, its plain ridiculous. Apple didn't invent backlit keyboards and this isn't a Notebook. Now if you want something to compare it too, look at apples wireless desktop keyboard, which is not backlight, requires 4 AA batteries, and switches to low power modes due to inactivity.
And could someone explain to me why a tilt sensor is so great? - callingshotgun, on 10/12/2007, -8/+47"Steve Jobs: "Microsoft copies everything we do""
Seriously, I see that everywhere... It's kind of hypocritical.
What about right-clicking?
What about (as of 10.4.7) being able to install your OS on a PC?
They even go beyond copying- Apple now pushes, as a selling point, that you can stick Windows on the new macs!
As... erm... popular... as it is around here to argue on behalf of M$, half the bashing I see around here wouldn't occur in the first place if anyone other than Microsoft did whatever was being discussed.
At least when they see a good idea that they didn't create, they implement it properly.
Command-click? Double-tap the touchpad? Please. Sell a notebook with two freakin' mousebuttons, already. And stop pretending none of you would be bashing Microsoft every time they DIDN'T copy a good idea when they saw it elsewhere. I think tabbed browsing in IE pretty much cleared that one up. - furtwan1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27um...it can. Any usb keyboard can.
- mc7winkie, on 10/12/2007, -10/+36If that looks like ***** then I would like to see what you think of this.
http://www.artlebedev.com/portfolio/optimus/ - sragzorz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24Then don't buy this one.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+27I disagree, I'm very impressed. It looks slick.
- maverick999, on 10/12/2007, -5/+25Yeah, it says that the keyboard can recognize when you turn down the lights, so the backlight comes on automatically. Now that's pretty sweet...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+22I think it looks great. The backlighting functionality seems useful and attractive.
I like it. - ravitek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17What about the Starter, Home Basic, Home Premium, Business and Enterprise Keyboard?
- HomsarOhio, on 10/12/2007, -6/+22Wow! Finally, some interesting ID coming from Microsoft Hardware... And it'd look even better if it could link up with a 360!
- unabonger, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16It's rechargeable...
- tecmec, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Looks nice, but WHERE'S THE NUMBER PAD?
- smoothoperatah, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14its very useful, if you're not in the room, then there is no need for the backlight to be draining your batteries.
- tavisjohn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14"If that looks like ***** then I would like to see what you think of this.

Now take that MS keyboard and put the Optimus OLED keys on it... Now THAT is a keyboard to drool over!!!! - AhmedOmran, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Must say I'm very satisfied with my microsoft keyboard and mouse. But that's pretty much all..
Looks like a nice piece of hardware. I don't want to see the price tag though.. - HoboMaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12What, are you going to not buy a keyboard because it lets you get too far away from your computer? At the very least, it means it'll work more consistently at normal distances. I would suppose it's so that you can use it with a mediaPC from the couch, like it says. I would've loved this a while back when we had a comp hooked up to our TV.
- tgilber, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15What flop? I think my MS Natural Keyboard is hands down the best keyboard I've ever had. In fact, I have one that I've move three times between different work computers (one of the good "game-friendly" natural keyboards that has an inverted-T cursor keys instead of the plus-sign cursor keys).
- Jaria, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13ehm media station perhaps ? (as shown in the flash clip)
- DannoHung, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14How do I get my Apple keyboard to be backlit?
Oh, you mean the Laptop ones.
I'd like it on a desktop keyboard though. - dargon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+122 words, MEDIA CENTER
- maiku00, on 10/12/2007, -16/+26The flash video was so obnoxious that I totally stopped caring and closed the window. Maybe I'll see a real article about it later.
- salmonmoose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9It's not JUST light sensitive, it appears that the lights turn off when you leave the room as well as adjust themselves to match the light level of the room.
Can we have an ergonomic version MS? plsthx :) - ssmurphy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12wow the music is like going to a relay lame rave. with the back lighting you can swing the keyboard around like a glow stick?
- ryan7107, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Maybe not. For all of Microsoft's flaws, they've always put out excellent input devices at reasonable prices.
- caseysousa, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12yeah, this is a feature that i've enjoyed on my powerbook for over two years now. :) glad to see they are rolling it into their product. i especially like how it's slightly curved. not totally separated like some of those ergonomically correct keyboards, but just a little bit to make typing more comfortable. although, i'm sure i'd have to get used to it all over again after using a straight keyboard all these years.
- ShavedRegressor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9This keyboard has some major problems:
(1) No numeric keypad
(2) Cramped cursor keys in an odd location
(3) Non-standard function keys
(4) No wired-only option (as far as I can see). Cords are okay, bit I hate messing with batteries and recharging.
(5) A big heavy companion mouse built like a tank. I want something small and light.
(6) The most annoying Flash ad I've ever seen.
On the other hand, it's very attractive, and I like the subtle curve. I've wanted a good backlit keyboard for a long time. Why doesn't anyone make a backlit keyboard with a *standard* layout? - vbsurfer, on 10/12/2007, -10/+18Stop being fanboys. Its a damn keyboard for gods sake.
- HoboMaster, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11hur hur hur.
I love my current microsoft wireless ergonomic keyboard, and this thing looks great. Microsoft makes good keyboards. - FLarsen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6You CAN use it 30 feet away but you don't have to. It's better to be able to use it 30 feet away and not want to, than want to use it 30 feet away but not being able to.
- Portwineboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Agree with Ryan. The best mouse I've ever owned is my Msoft Trackball Explorer v. 1.0
It's one of those devices I like so much I'm sorta afraid it might fail and since it's discontinued I bought one off ebay last month to store away in case of disaster.
/or zombie attack - dirtyfratboy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10I'm not too sure why the "automatic" backlighting is hyped in the flash presentation... It's basically the same technology as a night-light...
Then again, there's rave music in the background. -_- - Kajico, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Very nice, I'd buy it, but I don't think I'd spend more than 100 dollars on a keyboard, unless it was of course one that was programmable with OLED screens for keys.
I just hope this doesn't end up being vaporware: http://www.artlebedev.com/portfolio/optimus/ - quasipalm, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10I'm with maiku00... A flash ad with crappy techno and no "music off" button. Come on microsoft, buy a sense of style already. Stop trying to do your adverts and hire the guys from Nike. Sheesh.
- Amplix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It would have been nice if I was able to get a look at it instead of watching it fly by every 5 seconds..
Sounds cool though - phobozad, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7The ultimate keyboard has already been released...the IBM Model M
- dethblud, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Precisely!
All of the keys on the number pad are redundant, but that doesn't mean they're not useful to have over there. - jdog1016, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It is true that powerbooks have had backlit keyboards for a while now. But that's a LAPTOP. Stop comparing apples to oranges--while a tilt sensor has some real utility value in a powerbook, why would a KEYBOARD need a tilt sensor? By the way, I'm a Mac user, and I'm STILL waiting for the apple backlit desktop keyboards. In the meantime, this looks pretty nice.
- phidong, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I didn't see any pictures of the KB on the site so I took some screen shots
http://www.phidong.com/temp/mskey.jpg
What I find intriguing is the two mouse buttons on the left hand side. Is the final design going to have a nipple or some touchpad to go along with that? This would be the perfect keyboard for media center if it does have some kind of mouse functions. I think the design is great. The back lighting would definitely be nice if you're using media center on your TV in the dark. MS sells their current wireless media center kb for around 50 (not sure about MSRP). So the price might be around 60-75 keyboard only/ 100 for bundle? If it happens to be that low, I'd definitely consider getting it for my HTPC but I won't be replacing my MS Ergonomic 4000 for my main computer any time soon. :) - moofree, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4No numpad. No digg.
- mwstratton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4hah yeah, exactly.... all i could think of the entire time was "EXPERIENCE!" terrible Flash video with cheap effects... "EXPERIENCE!" absolutely no sense of design."EXPERIENCE!" living life without a numpad.
It reminds me of this... http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=5487302194049101890&q=microsoft+ipod - theyenk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Totally agreeā¦
Why not set up a 360 product view, like any normal product. - armbar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Screw battery life, how about decent cordless signal? My last wireless keyboard from Microsoft didn't register keystrokes a good bit of the time, and it was supposed to work from 15 or so feet.
- degree, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5you would need two to do that :(
- wulfflower, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Very interesting, I'll certainly be watching out for this.
