- ataylor32, on 10/26/2007, -1/+109It's a scam! It's just a regular computer with a giant pocketknife on top
- jayjaykay, on 10/20/2007, -0/+34I do IT support for a very large screen print/embroidery company. I saw this Fit-PC last time it was on Digg, and decided to try it out. I have since ordered almost 30 of them, and they run our business. They are hooked up to small 14 inch Lilliput touch screens, and run our print and embroidery machines. They are also on mobile carts that we use for picking and screen recycling. They work great. I did have to reload XP on them, as we use an in house software app that cannot run on linux (Comes preloaded with Gentoo). Other than a small Bios bug that was kind of a pain the in the reload process...these things work great.
- wiirdo, on 10/16/2007, -0/+21It's the Bikini Theory...the smaller it is, the more expensive.
- fnaqzna, on 10/16/2007, -3/+24Almost blew coffee on my monitor for this one.
- sirdaz, on 10/26/2007, -6/+26If I don't see the beowulf cluster joke here somewhere, I'm gonna be disappointed.
- Optimaximal, on 10/16/2007, -0/+17An MP3-sharing NAS device?
A Linux-based firewall? (with its 2 ethernet ports it's asking for pass-through connections)
A thin-client for a business?
A small PC for a younger member of the family? (using the discussion on ET as an example, install something idiot proof on it and smother it in cute pictures/a cute case and it'll sell) - debuggercll, on 10/16/2007, -1/+16Viewing pornography on the internet.
- stupidbrowner, on 10/17/2007, -0/+14Where do you get ~$100-$150 more?? This Fit-PC is listed at $285 while the entry level Mac Mini is $599. Doing the math, the difference is $314.
- BlackCow, on 10/16/2007, -0/+11They got sued for making a really small computer?
- dillyhoo, on 10/15/2007, -1/+11It's not really that comparable. The computer is 5W, and is meant to run an embedded OS installed over the network. To hook up a 80W monitor to this thing and call it a PC kind of nullifies the point of buying it.
- weeeezzll, on 10/17/2007, -0/+9Easy, they use "bias rounding". It's all very scientific actually.
Mac Mini is $599 which is basically $500 and change.
Fit-PC = $285 which is $300, but it's ugly so we add a $50 penalty to its price making it $350 (you can add an optional $50 fan boy penalty if you wish)
$500 - $350 = $150
$150 - $50 (optional fan boy penalty) = $100
Simple... - ataylor32, on 10/16/2007, -0/+9$285
- Ub3rg33k, on 10/16/2007, -2/+11I'm trying to think what this would be good for. Ideas?
- Egoist, on 10/26/2007, -2/+9This ain't Slashdot.
- dafragsta, on 10/16/2007, -2/+9Imagine a pecan cluster of these?
- megadan76, on 10/26/2007, -6/+13Neat.... but is it cheap?
- Tippis, on 10/16/2007, -2/+9Now all you need is a 10:1-scale VGA adaptor...
- Clay3521, on 10/15/2007, -2/+9Carputer ?
- MattB123, on 10/16/2007, -0/+7I think it's pretty cool.
There seems to be a gap between a NAS solution and a low power server that this or things like it could fill pretty well.
I'd love to find a low(er) power server I could run at home for light duty file/print/media serving. Right now I have a Celeron box with a RADI5 setup that may be power efficient compared to some bigger servers, but I'd love to make it use less power (and still get similar performance). - vafada, on 10/18/2007, -2/+8kickass gaming desktop for $500? a good GFX card alone costs ~$400.
- arbulus, on 10/15/2007, -0/+6But like was mentioned, this machine isn't meant to compete with a Mac Mini, it's not even in the same realm. It's not about performance and general use. It's meant for a dedicated, mostly single purpose situation (e.g. router/firewall, a network based audio controller, something like that). It's not really meant to be a full fledged desktop pc.
- SleepingOrange, on 10/15/2007, -0/+6last time I checked, 5W * 24Hours was .12KWH
Failed Grade 5 maybe? - MagicCake, on 10/15/2007, -1/+6Sorry, you're like 6 years late to the party. AMD isn't the hip underdog brand anymore...
- subliminalurge, on 10/16/2007, -0/+5File server. Mail server. Web server. Print server. Router/Firewall.
Obviously not in high volume installations, but for home use, it should perform those functions just fine for most people. Probably all at the same time. - Icetype, on 10/16/2007, -0/+5Perfect m0n0wall box if I ever saw one.
http://m0n0.ch/wall/ - xtmno3, on 10/15/2007, -0/+5Lies, the weighted companion cube has that beat hands-down.
- EXreaction, on 10/15/2007, -0/+5Buried for being a stupid fanboy.
- Sketchcast, on 10/16/2007, -5/+9Why on earth would you want to do that? Yuck.
- bobartig, on 10/15/2007, -0/+4How does this device draw 5 Watts total if the hard drive alone requires 5V at 1 A? Does this assume that the computer is idling and not doing any disk I/O?
I'll stick with my MacMini, which consumes 4-6x the power, and has a C2Duo processor. It delivers the goods without breaking the laws of thermodynamics. - shark615, on 10/16/2007, -0/+4Why when can buy already made products for far less?
- Ub3rg33k, on 10/16/2007, -1/+5The last 3 are good ideas, but unfortunately I don't have the need. Bummer.
Why the hell am I being dugg down for asking for ideas of what to do with this thing? - plizard, on 10/15/2007, -3/+7what? no dvi!
- virtualkuz, on 10/15/2007, -0/+3It is using 5W not 50W.
5W * 24 HR = 120 watt-hours or .120KWh.
Much less than your estimated 350W traditional PC uses in an hour, more like what your example uses in 20 minutes. - arbulus, on 10/15/2007, -0/+3NorhTech has some nice options
http://www.norhtec.com/products/index.html - knightboat, on 10/15/2007, -2/+5Mac.
- MacParrot, on 10/15/2007, -0/+3Any chance you could be less of an ass and just comment on the merits of the system? China occupies Tibet but I bet you don't have anything to say about that or ban products from China because of it.
- EXreaction, on 10/15/2007, -0/+3For desktops, from what I have seen, about 100 - 120 watts. My desktop uses about 140 watts, but without the 6800 GT in it, around 110 watts.
My laptop uses 30 watts with the screen on at full brightness, and 20 watts with the screen off (but older laptops are much less power efficient). - gr4yscale, on 10/15/2007, -0/+3I like it. Very sexy for a webserver that you want to throw in your closet. And no worries at all about leaving it on all the time! Plus, with two ethernet ports you could use it to make a gateway or a bridge or something of the sort.
- spudnic, on 10/15/2007, -1/+4Got a PC the same size that uses the same amount of power as this but with high specs lying around?
- OrangeTide, on 10/16/2007, -0/+3100mbit is faster than my cable modem.
- thcobbs, on 10/15/2007, -0/+3I might have to do some work with one of these to turn it into a MythTV front end system.... hrrrrm.
An IDE interfaced Flash Rom with about 2-4GB of storage.... I bet this would be a silent one as well since its a Geode Proc. - Zera, on 10/15/2007, -0/+3Somehow you confused your decimal point.
5 * 24 = 120, so that's 0.120 KWH - paulsmith288, on 10/15/2007, -0/+3cpu seems a bit weak for myth tv. 500mhz will do it but only just. At least its not that shappy on memory. My xbox struggles a bit as it only has 64mb ram (not to mention the noise and size of the beast)
- nickj6282, on 10/15/2007, -0/+3I'd turn that into my router. Much more expandable than my WRT54G (which still kicks ass with Hyperwrt on it).
- prettyha8, on 10/16/2007, -3/+6But, will it blend?
- etmori, on 10/19/2007, -0/+3What is the typical idle power consumption of 'normal' desktop and laptops, excluding the monitor and other peripherals?
- bobbob1016, on 10/15/2007, -0/+3Depending on the hard drive size, it could make a really nice Torrent machine. Leave it on at night, then write a script to auto-download the torrents to your main machine later. Or make it into a NAS by throwing some USB hard drives onto it.
- sstidman, on 10/15/2007, -1/+4Good suggestions above. I'd add car PC to the list, but only if it can take an LCD connection like the mini-ITX or pico-ITX boards. I think the pico-ITX is still a more interesting board: http://www.mini-itx.com/reviews/pico-itx/
- thcobbs, on 10/15/2007, -0/+2But the question remains, are you recording with it or just acting as a front end? I'm talking about strictly streaming data over 10/100.
- finezapa, on 10/16/2007, -0/+2thin client. that's all its good for.
