- illynova, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20You're... kidding, right? You know the reason for AMD doing so spectacuarly well in the last two years was BECAUSE of the Anthlon XP core, right? (Especially the 64bit version) Many of the major server makers are using the Opterons (amd64 based) because they're more stable, MUCH more heat efficient (35c as opposed to say 45 - 50), and use less power.
Oh they also happen to be cheaper and on par with the equiv intel chip. - Chakz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17"They still don't have an answer for Centrino much less Core Duo or Core 2 Duo, I am not sure they are going to have an answer for Conroe either."
Their answer to the Centrino and Pentium M was Turion. Their answer to Core Duo is Turion X2, which has already been announced for certain laptops. Personally, I like AMD, only because I've never had one fail on me. I'm not a fanboy and don't want AMD to win everything, competition is best, it's the only thing that keeps 1 company from charging whatever they want because theres limited alternatives cough*microsoft*cough - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17Don't forget the quad core that AMD announced.
- born, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Buy Intel now before Conroe is released!
- millixaw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12AMD is no longer an underdog. If you want underdog, go with Transmeta.
- pabster, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14@dotpage
You are a ***** idiot.
I've got the $149 you wasted on that Pentium D 805 which says my Athlon X2 will wipe the ***** floor with it.
Now we can debate price but performance? No. - deepsub, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Get a new fan/heatsink.
*points out the obvious* - Freeper, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14How bout the turion x2. Intel doesn't have an answer to AMD's 64 bit mobile processor.
- atelophobee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10about time a great underdog company gets recognized... fortunately for them it's for what they do best, and they didn't have to come up with a portable MP3 player to get ppl to use their chips! makes the job just that much easier
- deepsub, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Dell chose AMD for servers for the same reason Apple chose Intel for laptops... lower heat dissipation vs. performance.
- silenceHR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7arghhh.... Centrino == platform (marketing name for CPU + WiFi), acctual CPU is Pentium M.
Put Turion in laptop with WiFi and you have Centrino.
I am not saying that Pentium M's arent good, in fact all laptops i looked were Pentium M based ones, even though i used AMD desktop parts for last three comps. I just wish that people make distinction between platform (and marketing term) and acctual CPU inside. - digitalgopher, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6this was sweet. gave me a chance to off load some AMD stock at a nice price bump. go AMD!
- mirunit, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7That was kinda dumb for you to buy a P4 (netburst), AMD's current line pretty much destroys all the P4/P4D's. As for heat, intels produce far larger ammounts of heat than the AMD linup and how more power per mhz. FYI the 805 isnt that great of a processor anyway. As for Conroe, yes it is an epic processor and no AMD has nothing to counter it. I have a feeling that the Conroe will put Intel right back on top for the next couple of years considering the preliminary benchmarks have been nothing less than supurb - and they are great overclockers.
- mirunit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6From benchmarks I have seen comparing the new AMDs with Conroes, the conroes win pretty much hands down.
- Ramble, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"I have an X2 and the bloody thing is VERY HOT. The AMD fan is *****."
Then you have ***** cooling, my X2 idles at 30C and doesn't go much higher on load (This is at 2.55GHz and 1.475V, so it's not underclocked either).
if you knew something about hardware you'd think twice about using the AMD HSF. - geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"How bout the turion x2. Intel doesn't have an answer to AMD's 64 bit mobile processor."
Merom (Core 2 Duo Mobile). And it's already here (June/July/August). And sorry, the Turion X2 has failed to impress many, many people, as it's just a respun K8 with a bit more advanced Cool n Quiet onboard (link: http://www.matbe.com/articles/lire/299/amd-turion-64-x2-socket-s1-et-ddr2/page8.php translate from French to English if you don't read French, it's probably the most fair review I've read in a long time). The Turion still uses more power than the (ordinary) Core Duo, and only slightly outperforms it in 32-bit mode. That means Merom, which is expected to consume 20% less power than the Yonah, and offer the same amount of performance (AND will offer 64-bit mobile computing, on current generation motherboards and manufacturing), will most likely slaughter it.
"Don't forget the quad core that AMD announced."
Trust me, nobody has. The problem is, the Quad Core they've announced won't be here until 2k7 (presumably Q2 to H2). On the other hand, Woodcrest, Intel's "answer", will be here in June/July/August (for 2 cores; Intel's MCM "Cloverton" is just two Woodcrests on one package, which means as soon as Woodcrest is ready, Cloverton won't be far off). That gives them roughly a year's advantage on AMD, and will offer EM64T, as well as machine virtualization, and roughly 80% more computing power for only a modest rise in heat over the Core Duo.
Look, it's easy to dismiss Intel after NetBust screwed them over. But AMD has got to be panicking right now; Conroe, Merom and Woodcrest will absolutely devistate the market, and will probably gain back a great deal of the space AMD has taken from them in the past year. I love AMD, but whatever they've got in the pipeline, now's not the time to stall, and switching to socket AM2 is not what they need right now (especially as the AMD64 chips are not memory bound; they're simply computationally taxed). What AMD needs to compete is a chip with simply MORE onboard; Intel's Core 2 chips all feature more decoders, better integer units, and far superior SSE units than anything Intel has ever released (but yeah, sadly the FPUs still need attention). I'm still a fan of the idea of switching back to a northbridge, using the reclaimed die space to make it easier to put a HT-linked memory controller slightly offchip (perhaps on package?), and to add in another x86 decode unit, and whatever else you can fit in the space reclaimed (perhaps another FPU if they're lucky). - poipoipoi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5see kids, the invisible hand of the market ~does~ work.
- Drizzit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It was bound to happen. My company wanted Opteron's and Dell could not deliver so we turned to Sun. That's a lot of revenue Dell missed out on.
- MonaLisa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Here is a link for conroe vs. x2 benchmarks: http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20060307-6334.html
- neko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3When I got my first AMD64x2, I remember touching the heatsink and being shocked at how cold it was- did I attach it firmly enough? I'm not going to smell burnt silicon in the next 2 seconds am I??!
Nope, working like a charm. I just got trained by Intel to expect blistering heat as a sign of progress. 42 degrees C is the hottest I've seen it, compared to 70something for the Intels I've had. And the performance, oh baby... - LordRahl72, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Hey dotpage, I am sure glad I don’t live in your fantasy world. You could not be more wrong with everything you said.
The only thing that Intel would have beaten the AMD in whas your 400mhz K6-2 400 would have been wasted by the P3 500. Hell it would have been wasted by a P2 400. AMD did not get there act together till the Athlon 600.
Screw Intel, AMD all the way. - noGoodNamesLeft, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Here's an interesting and more cynical take on why Dell waited until now to choose AMD instead of picking it up 2 years ago (though it seems that the "Dell should use AMD", and the "OMG! Dell are going to use AMD" have been going for more like four years at least).
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/05/19/dell_opteron_wallstreet/ - bdbr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Here's an interesting and more cynical take on why Dell waited until now to choose AMD instead of picking it up 2 years ago"
Consider the source. Ashlee Vance makes it his calling to spin the news anti-Intel. His reason Apple should have bet the farm on a startup that's never actually manufactured a chip, instead of using chips from the company with a good roadmap and the largest manufacturing capacity? To "help it save face by avoiding Intel". His reason why Dell chose AMD for a rather poorly-selling line of servers? It "attached the Dell name to 'a winner'."
(Yeah, from what I understand Ashlee Vance is a guy. Just leave it at that; we don't get to pick our names.)
In the mind of Ashlee Vance, anyone who does anything with Intel is a loser. Everyone's entitled to their opinion, but presenting opinions as "news" the way the Register does just turns it into a techno-tabloid. - absentmindedjwc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3not that im picking sides, and I am most likely going to have a -30 digg, but comments are for just that, comments, not personal opinions. Just because you think the AMD is ***** and has a garbage fan, doesnt mean that it is true. Have you tried every single Intel chip? I KNOW that there has been intel chips that ran hot as hell. Boo-Hoo, the AMD dual core chips are too expensive... no ***** their expensive, you get what you paid for, if you go and spend $100 on a processor, I dont care what the specs say, you are buying *****.
And before you call me a AMD fanboy, I have a Power PC processor, not even intel, this is just me telling you to stop whining. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wow, I am still amazed by the number of noobs that still think "centrino" is some special cpu technology.
Let me repeat the previous poster. Pentium M + separate wifi = centrino. Intels Ad campaign was great making it seem like it was some sort of voodoo. - jamesbenet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yes, Intel will fly then. This is an awesome DIP
- noGoodNamesLeft, on 10/12/2007, -7/+8@Lyph4; that's nothing. Intel have just announced a chip that has *five* blades and battery-operated vibrating action. They're selling it on the basis that "It's shiny and macho and it gets you chicks".
Although there was some dissent at the press conference ("Hang on... *blades*...?! Are we talking about CPUs or razors here?"), most were enthusiastic saying "Ooh... five. That's one better than AMD and a gorgeous chick will stroke my chin. I want one of those in my next PC".
The marketing person responsible has since been promoted. - Demagogue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Im pumped for the new Conroe, right now I love my AMD chip but if the Conroe blows it away I'll have to pick one up
hooray for competition - geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Just means it's time to buy Intel stock. Get it now while the price is good; once Conroe drops it's going to be a slaughterfest until late 2007.
*grin* - yaroze, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Centrino = Intel Pentium M + Intel Mobile Chipset + Intel Wifi
all Intel parts for the Centrino badge - jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2@Chakz
Yeah the Turion is a decent alternative but it isn't the all in one package currently offered by intel. - FelixWankel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yea, 3800+ X2 here, and I've never seen higher than 40 C if both cores are fully loaded (sadly rare). I was sure that it was broke at first. This is with stock fan in a case with tons of hard drives, as well. The Athlon XPs were bad IMO for heat, most that I saw ran at 50 C minimum. Personally, my 2600+ would reach 60 C sometimes. This is in the same case as previously mentioned. Both AMD and Intel are realizing the important of efficiency, the new Pentium Ms blow me away but of course there are more good things to come from AMD.
- deepsub, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@monalisa
X2 != K8L - bradleyland, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You sure you didn't use Apple's thermalpaste instructions by mistake?
- noGoodNamesLeft, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Erm... .okay, fair point. I should have said to take it with a slight pinch of salt, as you should do with everything from The Register. It's pretty funny and insightful sometimes, but it doesn't seem that bothered about being scrupulously professional and unbiased. :)
- AeroSquid, on 10/12/2007, -9/+8AMD will have an answer to Cornrow.
hi2u K8L - MasterDwarf, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1"The agreement does not end Intel's coveted status as Dell's only provider of microprocessors for desktop and laptop personal computers."
Dell is still afraid to take the leap provide an AMD option for the above. This only pertains to servers. This is the way I see it. Dell's market share will continue to slide. They'll fight the intel vs amd to the bitter end and try to adopt AMD for laptops and desktops. Their Alienware line will offer Intels only. Intel won't care because they'll still be buying Intel cpu's. Oh, and there is that little arrangement with some guy named Jobs. Apples will gain market share, and intel will be at the heart of that. So big whoop, let shares slide a bit, buy 'em at a discount, because they'll just go back up as what I say takes place. - ssss, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I bought a dual core AMD CPU for my new PC and couldn't be happier with its performance. With that said, INTC is trading at 14 P/E and AMD is at 43. I'm going to back up my truck and load up on INTC Monday. I think Intel's new chips will catch up with AMD's, and having been embarrassed by AMD, Intel will use all the dirty tricks in the book to "win" back market share.
Apple didn't pick Intel over AMD because they want the Intel Inside logo but because Jobs think Intel is a safer bet in the longrun. AMD may have better products now, but he is betting Intel will win at the end.
Betting with Steve Jobs and Apple seems to be a wise choice recently. - nomorgow, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0AMD's answer to Intel's Core Duo and Core 2 Duo will be revealed on Tuesday, 5/24. They'll be announcing the next step of socket processors, which at one time was called AM2. There hasn't been much hubbub about it lately, but Tuesday's the date, and it's supposed to blow the socks off what they have currently. That says a lot, especially since Intel supposedly has just matched performance power to AMD's FX-60 processor when you overclock their Duo 2600 processor. Say goodbye again, Intel. :) Buy your AMD shares now, before Tuesday!
- deepsub, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2"From benchmarks I have seen comparing the new AMDs with Conroes, the conroes win pretty much hands down."
I have a hard time believing this. Link? - jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -11/+5They still don't have an answer for Centrino much less Core Duo or Core 2 Duo, I am not sure they are going to have an answer for Conroe either.
- Jarda, on 10/12/2007, -10/+2That's what you get for associating your company with Apple
- brickbat, on 10/12/2007, -14/+1I have an X2 and the bloody thing is VERY HOT. The AMD fan is *****.
- thefinger, on 10/12/2007, -19/+3AMD is just an Intel knockoff, been riding Intel's innovative coattails for years. Let's see them do something truly different. Intel sets the standard and will for a long time yet. Imo AMD is too big for its pants. Now I really DO hope that Apple makes serious headway into the PC market, give AMD the ass kicking it deserves.
- dotpage, on 10/12/2007, -23/+6Turion is like every other AMD descent products nowadays overpriced and underachiver, I use to be a huge AMD fanboy back in the days, my K6-2 400 kicked any P3 500 in every task at a fraction of the price, but when the Athlon XP show'd up, tables turned. Heat issues and lack of stability on 3D applications (I'm not talking about games), along with higher prices, drove me back to Intel. I bought a Pentium D 805 boxed for 149 bucks, he cheapest dual core Athlon costs 295 for OEM, double the price. Sorry AMD, but you where way cool as an underdog, but now, I'm back to the safety of an Intel Processor...
