- DDDavinnn, on 10/24/2007, -2/+19Comcast is the worst
- Powermac, on 10/23/2007, -6/+15THANK GOD.
The current Comcast boxes are absolutely TERRIBLE. Bring the TiVO software, PLEASE. PLEASE - crash331, on 10/24/2007, -0/+9Have you ever used a TiVo? Suck is the last thing a TiVo will ever do. Bought a 40 hour series 2 in 2003, and promptly upgraded it to 200 hours. I hate to sound melodramatic, but TiVo has literally changed my life.
- sockpuppets, on 10/24/2007, -1/+9The TiVo firmware and replacement remote that doesn't have 10,000 ***** useless buttons.
- redx724, on 10/23/2007, -4/+11Are you using your comcast DVR to post on DIGG?
- WiseWeasel, on 10/23/2007, -3/+10Please, dear god, let this suck less than my current Comcast Motorola DVR! That thing is a complete piece of *****. Worst navigation interface EVAR! Frequent extreme lag... occasional crapping out. Oh, how I hate my current Comcast box!
- inactive, on 10/23/2007, -0/+3Depends on the region. Before Time Warner took over here in North Texas, Comcast ran a really tight operation. Time Warner sucks donkey balls in comparison. 1 out of 4 guide listings are wrong.
- m00nmaster, on 10/23/2007, -3/+6I was expecting to see pictures of the box actually "in the wild". Like, among the trees. Buried for inaccuracy.
- bradleyland, on 10/23/2007, -1/+4I actually like my current box... well, I would, except for the fact that it doesn't fast forward or fast backward very well. Quite frequently, the video hangs when moving backward at 1x speed. You'd think that a DVR could get the basics right. Having said that, I actually like the interface and the way that recordings are set.
- crash331, on 10/24/2007, -2/+4Because it uses TiVo software. It isn't just "firmware". It uses the whole linux-based TiVo OS and UI.
- inactive, on 10/24/2007, -3/+5Thats a reply to "cool pics !" ?'
you sure got a lot more out of that then i did - Jacobi, on 10/23/2007, -1/+3Since I've never used another form of DVR, I actually don't mind them. But I bet this is more me not knowing better, than preferring the current Comcast boxes to Tivo. Still, it gets the job done. But I wouldn't mind a more robust system.
- Stettenbauer, on 10/23/2007, -0/+2Comcast can cram it.I am working on my own(mythtv).....Soon as a better isp comes along I am dumping them anyway.
- QuickeningYak, on 10/23/2007, -0/+2Personally, I wouldn't sign a contract for them to tie their own shoes. Does anyone really *want* to be a retail customer of Comcast ?
- davmattucci, on 10/23/2007, -0/+2No argument there. BUT I will say this: Continually call and complain about service outages or other issues, and Comcast, at least in my area, will pour credits onto your account because they're trying to retain customers... its worked for us. Its THE only reason I'm not back on DirecTV.
- AkshayGenius, on 10/23/2007, -1/+2i know what you just wrote is spam.... but that site is actually pretty good.....
- inactive, on 10/23/2007, -0/+1Bring it on. I used to use Tivo before I went HD. I miss the Tivo interface and features. We use the Scientific Atlanta box here is NJ and it some what buggy.
- Jomwilli, on 10/23/2007, -0/+1I agree
- Kitsune818, on 10/23/2007, -0/+1Get the Tivo HD. Very much worth it.
- Chronomagnus, on 10/23/2007, -3/+4I honestly have no complaints about my Time Warner HD DVR. It can record two shows at once and can record a whole season. I've seen a lot of people complain about their cable company's DVR but I've never actually had any issues with mine
- RTPMatt, on 10/23/2007, -1/+2Wouldn't that be nice I've returned 3 of the comcast DVRs because of various problems (usually they just start locking up all every 5 minutes.) My current one still likes to freeze, but not often enough to make me think i can get a better one. The only nice thing about them is that i can set all the buttons to macros so they work the way i want.
- inactive, on 10/23/2007, -0/+1Yes, Comcast DVR's totally suck. But why would anyone in their right mind pay Comcast to get Tivo functionality, which they can already get for less by buying a TivoHD box and adding a couple of cableCards. Plus, then you get all of the additional storage options, TivoToGo and Multi-room viewing.
- Jomwilli, on 10/23/2007, -0/+1Four Companies Mentioned in this topic:
Motorola
Scientific Atlanta
Tivo
Comcast
Please identify what you're using now, or have used instead, my "Comcast box sux." Or, "my Tivo rocks." - daveisfera, on 10/23/2007, -0/+1At least in Tucson, Cox is FAR worse than Comcast.
- k8tek, on 10/23/2007, -1/+2For better pics, go to Motorola's website!
http://broadband.motorola.com/dvr/dct6412.asp - mentor972, on 10/23/2007, -0/+1I agree. Now with Time Warner and if I'm uploading, I can't download. WTF?
- inactive, on 10/23/2007, -0/+1Too expensive.
- inactive, on 10/23/2007, -0/+1hello --- burner
- yunus, on 10/23/2007, -0/+1I have had the same problems as you and others have reported. I found that if I turn it off when not in use(even though it stays on and I can hear the hard drive spinning and it records the shows I have set) that my current box has lasted at least 6 months with almost no lag issues. Its only after extended viewing or leaving it on for a full day or so that the lag reappears.
Just something for you to try. I know its not a solution but it helps deal with the crap that comcast gives us. - solarix, on 10/23/2007, -0/+1NM, I read the posts in the article and found this:
From MegaZone
" Nope, it means that if you live in a Comcast SciAtl area, you’re out of luck for now. This software is only being deployed in areas already using Motorola hardware. It is more than a box swap, the head-end would have to be changed as well. The good news is that Comcast and TiVo already have an agreement for TiVo to also port this software to SciAtl boxes, and that will probably be done sometime next year." - kroftakrofta, on 09/21/2008, -0/+1yes, that's absolutely correct
http://www.squidoo.com/lg-shine-accessories - GrumpyFan, on 10/23/2007, -0/+1Interesting. I wonder if that means they'll be replacing the software on the existing SciAtl boxes or replacing them with newer SciAtl boxes that have the TiVo firmware.
- aduzik, on 10/24/2007, -0/+1I just bought my third TiVo -- a new TiVo HD -- last month. I've owned a TiVo since 2004, and it's absolutely amazing. Really, it's by far the best way to watch TV. Before I bought my first TiVo, I was planning on canceling my cable. Now I always have something to watch. I sound like an advertisement, but now whenever I want to watch TV, there's always something on.
- tyderian, on 10/24/2007, -0/+0I want some of what you're smoking. There has been a sub-$300 HD TiVo on the market for months now.
- Judersi, on 10/23/2007, -0/+0I live in a SciAtl area with Comcast, so it doesn't look like this will be coming for quite a while. Then again, the SciAtl boxes and guides in this area are terrible. Maybe they should just scrap everything and start over with a new Moto headend.
- TheClone, on 10/23/2007, -0/+0True, but assuming that you paid 300 dollars for that original computer (low spectum computer, blah blah blah, for the sake of this argument, I'll assume that you're using the computer as some sort of media center connected to a television and not as an actual computer, so the monitor is the TV and that doesn't need to be factored into the price) and get a new harddrive once every six months (HD shows, re-encoded to whatever format of your choice, are still going to consume lots of space) and you pay say. . . $100 for that harddrive then you are going to be out 400 dollars the first year, 200 each subsequent year and then . . . well, I don't know what you do when you run out of places to mount harddrives. I guess you could swap them out or just buy bigger harddrives that can fit more on them, which is more money. . . Whereas someone with a Comcast DVR, while not having the advantage of having everything they have ever watched saved, is out 60 the first year, 60 the second, 60 the third. . . and if something happens to our DVR box, we get a new one for free. If you computer breaks, you have the pleasure of diagnosing what has failed and where, deciding if it's cost-effective to replace a faulty RAM module, etc. . .
The DVR isn't perfect, you can't do everything, but for it's price and for the added benefit of it having it something that "just works." It's not that bad at all. - mokayogi, on 10/24/2007, -1/+1HAHAHA!!! Well said.
- solarix, on 10/23/2007, -1/+1I know this is going to be a software update, But I have not heard anything about Comcast customers with the Scientific Atlanta HD-DVR Box (Like Myself) Anyone have any info?
- SmokeN-DC, on 10/24/2007, -2/+2Things TiVo does most other DVRs do not
the main one is the the scheduler and to do list lets say you pick a show to record at 11 PM the daily show and some time down the road you pick another show to record at 11 that's great no conflicts you have 2 turners this is where the other boxes will let you down you add a third show at 11 it will just add it and one of the other shows will no longer be recorded no warning no any thing at least that's the way it is with the Direct TV DVR
Second does not know what is first run and what is a repeat and will record all showings no mater what time it is on once again I will use the daily show as it is repeated many times during the day including at 8 PM this is also when Good Eats is on so you have to go in the the to do list on your DVR and do all sorts of crazy stuff to get it to still record the daily show at 11 but not the one at 8 where as the TiVo would warn you and let you make the choice as to which shows you wanted and which ones to skip I really think the thing TiVo has over the competition is the database of shows and schedules it has - antdude, on 10/23/2007, -1/+1Is that your password? Encrypted message?
- vvaduva, on 10/23/2007, -1/+1Very cool!! When will Time Warner jump on this?
- inactive, on 10/23/2007, -1/+1I live in New England and I called Comcast about this several times in the past few weeks. The customer service reps had no clue what I was talking about and I got a different answer every time. I finally picked up an HD Tivo and had a cable card installed.
By the way - Comcast reps said that the cable cards would be anywhere from $3 to $5 per month *each*, but when the Comcast tech came, he installed a single multi-service card (which works with the dual-tuner) and there is no charge for it. If you have to use two cable cards the first is free and the second is $2.95 per month. - inactive, on 10/23/2007, -1/+1Comcast is going to charge you for this. Given that I can already get a TivoHD and hook up with a CableCard plus add additional storage, and do it for less then what Comcast charges for their DVR boxes, this doesn't seem appealing at all.
- dstz, on 10/24/2007, -2/+1Motorola, the company that financially support the war on drugs ?

- Error601, on 10/23/2007, -3/+2It looks like the same Motorola DVR I have now. They actually plan to charge for an overlay?
- sparkysko, on 10/23/2007, -2/+1Yes the motorola DCT's can suck, and lag like a mofo when both encoders are being used, however, for the price, it's one hell of a deal to rent them rather than to buy a Tivo. Series 3 tivo costs 600$. The motorola DVR costs about 10$ a month to rent. Plus you have to pay a service fee to use Tivo anyways. Best case scenario, w/o tivo fee's, you'd start wasting money at the 5 year mark if you rented vs buy, and that's only if you're lucky enough to not have any hardware failures no your tivo.
- Farik, on 10/23/2007, -6/+3It's a standard DCT3416 with TiVo firmware, what's the big deal?
- inactive, on 10/23/2007, -6/+1... that's the same ***** piece of ***** ***** ***** DVR that everyone has to deal with from Comcast - but with TiVo software on it. Seriously, put 5 shows on the thing you want to watch, and it'll fill up in 2 weeks.
- sockpuppets, on 10/23/2007, -9/+4"The new TiVo software is written entirely in Java and runs on TV Navigator middleware, a precursor/subset of OCAP"
Eek, good luck with that. My TiVoHD is slow enough as it is, I can't imagine this solution. Oh, and could the comcrap logo get any bigger? On the upside, if I were stuck with a standard comcrap dvr I'd definitely call and have it upgraded. Also cool that it can do on demand.. -
