- inactive, on 11/06/2007, -1/+50Lost my cursor once, found a few days later it rolled under the bed.
- kbeeveer46, on 11/04/2007, -2/+35If you have more than one monitor you need to be using Ultramon. Pretty awesome app.
- mysteri0usdrx, on 11/03/2007, -1/+3155 feet? wow, thats a big LCD screen
- jdc760, on 11/06/2007, -2/+32A 30" widescreen.
- DeathJux, on 11/06/2007, -0/+30Depends what you're doing, but two 19" monitors should give you quite a bit more resolution than a single 22", unless the aesthetics of duallys puts you off.
- inspecality, on 11/06/2007, -2/+28hd porn... the only media where perhaps sd is better.
- ChileanGoD, on 11/03/2007, -0/+24two imax widescreens with 3d
- Asianwaste, on 11/05/2007, -0/+22That's a dumb answer.
- insertAliasHere, on 11/06/2007, -0/+20Depends. If you are a programmer or developer, you definitely should get 2 monitors (code in one screen, test it in the other). If it's mostly a video watching machine, one widescreen is great. Personally, after using 2 monitors, it's hard going back to 1 I find myself wishing for 3 monitors. But it all comes down to whether or not you think that you need to be doing/seeing 2 things at once. It's also cool to have your email always up in one screen and do other things on the other.
- Tyr86, on 11/06/2007, -5/+24Neither. The correct answer is, three, PS3s.
- SteveHiggs, on 11/14/2007, -1/+18Wow... a) This article is titled "how to make the most out of your dual monitors" yet all it shows it how to set a dual monitor wallpaper... this is the "MOST" dual monitors are good for? I for one have had a dual monitor setup for years now and find it extremely useful as a web developer.. I can have the browsers in one screen and the code in the other, or reference documents on one ... or run a virtualization of windows etc.. very handy stuff.
b) This article reminds me of how windows really sucks in this area! I used to run a dual monitor setup in XP for a year or two, and like the article shows, even something as simple as wallpaper assignment is a joke! I would have to paste together pictures and have to set as tile. Now I am on my MacBook pro and OS X is smart enough to open a whole second preference pane when you change your wallpaper, allowing you to choose separate wallpapers or choose randomly etc.. Windows is just really not friendly for this kinda stuff. - McShaken, on 11/06/2007, -1/+16So, what's better? A 22" widescreen, or a couple of 19" monitors? (factor in the cost)
- Vector713, on 11/07/2007, -0/+153 30" widescreens... if you're al gore that is.
- dsymonds, on 11/06/2007, -1/+15Is that "monitor-on-monitor" action?
- slashbot, on 11/04/2007, -0/+13What? I do hardware coding. Meaning I need to refer to schematics, specs, etc.
Either I constantly switch screens or I have dual monitors. Tiling the windows is not an option as you can NOT see an entire schematic in such a small window on a laptop screen.
Your 5 monitor argument is rediculous. The argument I gave more than supports my dual monitor argument. I am not saying we need 3.
Perhaps YOU are the poor coder - Urusai, on 11/07/2007, -0/+13Imax widescreen. With 3D.
- slashbot, on 11/06/2007, -1/+14huh? You obviously don't work a job that needs it then.
I am constantly coding and writing on one screen while referring to the other. There is no way I could do the same job at the same speed with a dual monitor. - redwire, on 11/06/2007, -3/+15Depends also if your a gamer a lot of games tend to break or act odd with dual monitors.
From my own experience I can say while a very few like supreme commander support them quite well most do things like battlefield 2142 do and either crash or show mostly on one screen and a little bit on the other or don't know what do do when the mouse tries to touch the 2nd screen and drop you out of the game when you move too far over.
If your not a gamer however dual monitors is a fantastic way to manage your windows in any OS and you will hate going back if you ever have too. - McShaken, on 11/03/2007, -0/+11My group at work does a lot of long-term fiscal budgeting... I'm thinking that a wide screen will be better for big spreadsheets.
- retral, on 11/03/2007, -0/+10One app is really all that's needed, really..
Ultramon. - jmkiii, on 11/05/2007, -9/+18as far as the "per monitor wallpaper" goes, you just need an appropriately sized image, and you have to choose "tile" instead of stretch.
take a screen shot (printscreen)
open photoshop - new image (it should automatically give you the size you will need)
Drag pictures into it to suit your fancy.
save it
now you have a perfectly sized image to span your monitors.
Don't forget to select "tile" - strictnein, on 11/04/2007, -0/+8The move from one monitor to two increases productivity significantly. I've never met someone who has not benefited greatly by doing so and I cannot imagine working with just one monitor now. It's also strange that you resorted to personal insults because someone disagreed with your opinion. And do you really "lose your cursor" a lot? I mean, seriously?
Your comment about five monitors is inane and pointless. Obviously there is only so much one can handle. Personally I have a three monitor system, but only use two while I'm really working. A main 24" widescreen that I code on. A 20" that I use for reference material and running/previewing what I have just written, and a 19" that I use for outlook/iTunes/etc. Any more for me would be overwhelming. - slashbot, on 11/04/2007, -0/+8Additionally I use VNC to have a linux session running while Im on windows on my laptop.
I am often transferring files etc between both screens. Yet again I am looking at schematics on Windows, while coding on linux. You either never gave dual monitors a chance or you just plain don't need it "Nuff said." - Zuljin, on 11/03/2007, -0/+8Yeah, Ultramon is the way to go.
And 2 monitors is so good. I really don't think I could go back. - ChromaVita, on 11/04/2007, -0/+8From the year 3161. Some time between March and April.

- inactive, on 11/03/2007, -0/+7"Dual wallpapers certainly can be done with no other programs on windows. Use photoshop "
Wouldn't photoshop count as another program? - slashbot, on 11/03/2007, -0/+7No comparison. Dual monitors in 1997 would almost certainly be CRT's
today you can get LCD's cheap and have more space than you would have with ONE CRT - inactive, on 11/06/2007, -1/+8You mean YOU loose the cursor all the time.
- meez, on 11/03/2007, -0/+7Do you have any reasoning as to why they are a "rip off" other than because you say they are? Even as a gamer (pro), I'm starting to prefer widescreen.
- Grummond, on 11/03/2007, -0/+71080 resolution on a 120" display?
Hell no! - Fenix, on 11/03/2007, -0/+6yes, synergy does that nicely. 1 keyboard, 1 mouse, 2 machines, and 2 monitors
http://synergy2.sourceforge.net/ - jobney76, on 11/06/2007, -0/+6I like my 24 inch dell wide-screen. Runs 1920x1200. Games that don't do wide-screen can still run at 4:3 1600x1200 with black areas on the side.
- inactive, on 11/03/2007, -0/+6Personally I have 1 24inch widescreen, my friend has dual 21inch 4:3. I did have dual before the widescreen (but they where CRTs).
Widescreen is better suited to movie watching and games, provided you have a good video card.
With dual screen you can do things like watch a movie on your 2nd monitor while gaming or browsing the web on the 1st, it can also help when doing a task with lots of windows such as programming while reading reference documentation or tutorials. Wide screen doesn't lend itself to well to basic task since its not wide enough to allow more than one window to be fully visible and the width doesn't help for website browsing and other text related activities.
My friend also has a continuous VNC connection to his server on it so he has Linux on one monitor and a windows desktop on his primary one.
Personally I think the best solution might be to have a widescreen 16:10 and a 2ndary 4:3 monitor with the same physical/resolution height they should give you the best of both world, might try and pick up a 4:3 cheap somewhere. Dual widescreen might be a bit too much. - mysteri0usdrx, on 11/03/2007, -0/+6so how is that e-peen doin' for ya?
- 1Stoner, on 11/03/2007, -0/+6I have a Matorx Parheliea @ 3840 x 1024 2- 20"LCD /1 20"CRT Finding decent wallpaper is a bitch. www.digitalblasphemy.com has about the best options I could find 2 monitors for gaming would suck because the cross hairs would be between the screen. You need @ least 3 Monitor's Or 9 to make the image in the center of a single display Anyone have advice for setting up 3 Monitors using PCI-E ?
- ChayD, on 11/06/2007, -0/+6I dunno about my cursor, but I'd be lost without two monitors nowadays. I often find myself wondering why my mouse pointer hasn't jumped from one screen to the other when at work - having two monitors connected to two separate machines (although I gather that some clever ppl have found a way of doing this)
- iknoritesrsly, on 11/03/2007, -0/+6speaking as someone with two 17's and a 22 widescreen, ultramon is the best utility for multimonitors. bar none.
forget this nonsense, get ultramon, you'll love it. - merwin, on 11/04/2007, -0/+6Unless you're a developer, graphic artist, or anyone else who has a need to see two things full screen at once. A lesser man would say that you're a waste :)
- Murdats, on 11/03/2007, -1/+6or you could use John's Background Switcher which has many image sizing modes aswell as options for differnt wallpaper per monitor, or one image for across all montiors aswell as options of scrapbook layout and mosaic.
add to that support to get images from your hdd, flikr, yahoo and several others + changing wallpaper(s) on command or at regular intervals, its somewhat easier then your method.

sorry for what looks like spam but it really is a good program (that i shall note isnt mine) - DivisibleByZero, on 11/04/2007, -0/+5Stack them on top of each other.
- shank2001, on 11/03/2007, -0/+4widescreen is the way to go...
- Spuy767, on 11/10/2007, -1/+5Well, whether you're talking about pure physical area, or tota pixels, the 2 19's are a better deal. In regard to pixel area, the pair of 19's cost 12.7 cents per thousand pixels whereas the 22 costs 15.8 cents per thousand. If you're talking about physical area, the 19 costs $1.06 per square inch of screen area, and the 22 costs $1.33 per square inch. Hope that answers your question. Keep in mind, these prices are beased on LCD monitor prices from newegg. Both monitors are from the same manufacturer and include all rebates available at the time of comparison.
- freezerburn666, on 11/03/2007, -0/+4One thing i like to do is use my tv as a second display for movies. This serves as another purpose, because when i watch cable, i obviously can't see the second display, however i do use it still... without seeing it. I know it sounds weird, but i have a laptop beside my desktop monitor running ubuntu so i connect with VNC, put the VNC window over on the second (tv) display... and my mouse then moves from one computer screen to the other, its very useful.
- AndrewJC, on 11/03/2007, -0/+4Add me as another member of the Ultramon camp. I love that I can set up profiles with it.
As for my setup, most people look at me funny when I explain how I set it up, but I honestly think it works best: I have the two monitors only connected at one place: the lower right-hand corner of the main monitor (and the top left corner of the secondary). This way, I have two fully-functioning single monitors with boundaries, and I can still cross over to the other monitor simply by moving my mouse down and right. No accidental missing the close button when I want to close a window or anything like that. The only down side to it is that I had to sort of relearn how to create dual monitor wallpapers and Windows tends to act funny when you've got the monitors in a diagonal setup like that (like extending menus or dropdowns in the wrong direction sometimes), but I got used to it and I love it that way.
The only way I would change it now would be if I could find some utility that added in virtual borders at the edge of each monitor, like fvwm used to do in Xwindows. Then I might consider a more traditional dual-monitor setup. - SillyRabbits, on 11/04/2007, -0/+4Borked the link....let's try that again...
