- berad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I think what was surprising was how much of a difference Rosetta performance improved in 10.4.8. I certainly am impressed!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6There's a UB build of quake 2, incidentally.
- joel8x, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"The 2.33GHz MacBook Pro was 40 percent faster than the older 2.16GHz model at MP3-encoding using iTunes."
I guess this is the kind of test that let Apple claim up to 39 percent faster. - foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Just block the apple section if you don't want Apple-Related News.
Or just ignore these submissions. Not like not looking at the comments is going to kill you. - cgreentx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Actually they compared a 2.16 Core Duo vs. Core 2 Duo in that benchmark and the Core 2 was noticeably faster. What makes you think if they slowed it to 2.0 that would change?
- tdhurst, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5There's a filter for a reason. Use it and quit bitching.
- nerd05, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm a computer science student, and I'm doing fine with just a MacBook. And believe me, I'm a very demanding user. If you want something even faster, go for it, but I don't think it would actually affect you that much.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I know this is going to sound blasphemous, and I'm sure new things will come out that demand faster CPUs, but I have a 2ghz MBP, and I think it's "Fast Enough" (tm). I don't find myself wishing for more CPU power (the ONLY things that could stand a speed improvement are Rosetta apps, which scream for native ports, not faster CPUs). At this point I'd like longer battery life and less heat. My MBP only lasts about 2:30. The ibook g4 I got my parents a couple of years ago does 5 hours on its new battery (courtesy of the Sony recall) and doesn't generate any significant heat while sitting on my lap.
- nerd05, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I definitely agree with you on the battery thing. I especially got jealous when I was working on the clamshell iBook I gave my grandpa. He had a brand new battery in it, and I was able to do a complete OS reinstall plus another few hours of work, all from the battery.
- mr804, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Rosetta in the latest update is really fast. I run quake 2 powerpc binary all the time in 1200x800 rez and it's fast as hell even under rosetta.
- Kelmon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm just wishing that Apple would hurry up and delivery the 17" version that I ordered almost 2-weeks ago now. Articles like this just increase the anticipatioin but at least it's looking like this generation will be really good and serve me well for the next few years.
- bangmalley, on 08/30/2008, -0/+1how about MobileMark?
- saggygrandma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1sorry your right, I miss interpreted it.
- matt.rubin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Maybe the results are suprising cause its run by mac world! get 3rd party benchmarker's then i will believe
- dmcipod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1would that be topanga store by any chance? (i work there btw)
- jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1$1499.00 is the price they charge for refurbished notebooks off the website, those are basically the ones they still had in stock though so they are mostly new.
I would say you didn't get an awful deal if it came with the full warranty but you could have gotten a better deal if you had asked about it on a forum like macrumors.com before purchasing. - manofaction, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1My local Apple Store (which just opened 1 month ago) sold me a 2.16 core duo for $1499 that was a lightly used display model: (1 gb ram; 256 MB vid card, 100 GB hd). I could have bought the baseline c2d for $300 more with my teacher discount. Did I make the right choice with the old model? They said I can return it without a restocking fee within 2 weeks.... Thanks for the input!
- BlurredWeasel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1You'll love it, thats the same specs as the one I got on monday, except I only have 2gigs of ram. I kept reading about heat problems, but I've left this system on for a few days straight and it was cooler than my old windows based laptop.
This thing rocks. Now just to wait for 10.5. - MyPlasticHeart, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I ordered the 15 inch with 2.33ghz + 3gb ram + 160gb HD. I can't wait to see how the extra ram will effect things. Should be a great machine! It's also my first mac. :)
- gezundheit, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0"For example, the 2.16GHz Core Duo MacBook Pro took 1:40 to complete our Photoshop test suite when tested with 10.4.6. After updating the OS to the most recent version, the same system finished the test suite 21 percent faster, with a score of 1:11"
Unless my math is failing me, shouldn't it be 100-71/100=29% and not 100-111/140=21%? I think 'almost 30%' sounds a lot bigger than 'a little over 20%' to my ears... - davidod87, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1How is this surprising? Anyone who thinks that a *new* processor with a new, more efficient architecture etc. isn't faster than last generation's technology is a moron.
Seriously, I'm tired of these ***** who this Core 2 Duo is only something like 7% faster than previous technology. - saggygrandma, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1If you ramped down the clock of the 2.16 core 2 duo to 2ghz (so it matched the black macbook) they would get fairly similar results in most tests....
- SirZRX, on 10/12/2007, -15/+2enought whit the macbook|apple|ipod storys please.
