- ariez84, on 03/19/2009, -0/+59Computer complaints from non-tech savy people are about as useful as a solar flashlight.
- Kruse, on 03/19/2009, -8/+54So you dropped your Mac, the hard drive crashed, and it only took 3 days to get it fixed. Why are you complaining?
Well, then again the guy admitted to using Twitter...it kinda makes sense. - alcimedes, on 03/19/2009, -5/+49That's an odd tie.
One machine has been sent off and he hasn't heard anything back yet on it.
The other was returned repaired in three business days, even after putting a fake name on the service order. How does that work out to a tie? - Arkanok, on 03/19/2009, -8/+49Ok there's something I don't get... Maybe I'm missing something but did he say that he has a Powerbook and it's only 6 months old? Umm.. Correct me if I'm wrong but they haven't been called Powerbook in a while now... Then again, he DID say he wasn't tech savvy and might be confusing the name of his MacBook Pro with with Powerbook.
- Tkuebrich, on 03/19/2009, -2/+42You may not believe it, but at this very moment I am actually using a computer.
- robotfriendly, on 03/19/2009, -12/+51This guy is a ***** moron.
- redfred18t, on 03/19/2009, -13/+50Mr MacSucks.... BRILLIANT!
- spl3nda, on 03/19/2009, -1/+32you do realize that it was not apples fault that you dropped your computer "a couple feet" onto the floor? that doesnt mean the computer "fell to pieces" in under a year, it was "dropped by you to pieces" in under a year.
you admitted to not being tech savvy so i'll just assume you do not know how a hard drive works and how when it drops on the floor it could possibly mess that up.
with that being said, you're a writer for cracked.com so what is expected from you anyways? - InfiniteNothing, on 03/19/2009, -3/+31Powerbook? They haven't made those in years. No wonder they are skeptical on your warranty.
- inactive, on 03/19/2009, -4/+30Just be sure to give your $3000 laptop to me when you can't get to google, you think it's broken, and you buy a new one.
- fezzasus, on 03/19/2009, -0/+24to be honest, neither sounded as bad as I expected.
- gaqua, on 03/19/2009, -0/+23An interesting viewpoint, and it raises an argument the internet has never seen.
Perhaps next you can begin an intelligent discussion about Star Trek vs. Star Wars, Xbox vs. Playstation, or Camaro vs. Mustang?
I mean - these are the important questions - and I imagine the world would be grateful to you for raising the level of public discussion. - InfiniteNothing, on 03/19/2009, -1/+22Not to mention that he dropped the mac
- Rapter09, on 03/19/2009, -0/+18Apple Retail Stores work via a reservation system Concierge on their website. You go, schedule an appointment about what product, bring it in around the time and head up to the Genius Bar.
If you walk in and go to the Genius Bar without an appointment - if its busy - they're going to turn you away. Most Apple stores are busy busy places. "Service Calls Only".
Now, if its dead at the store, different story. They'll generally have you in.
The problem is a lot of people call in through the 800 number, and are told by an Apple rep "Just head on into the store." and don't get an appointment made for them and then are met with a store that is literally going bananas its so busy and the Genius staff just can't look at it because they have other people reserved to deal with. - duffman03, on 03/19/2009, -1/+18Get out of here!?
- SpectralSounds, on 03/19/2009, -12/+27No, he said laptop. Which means he is using a "PC". If it was a mac he would feel the need to brag to everybody about how it's a MacBook Pro or some other over-priced piece of mac garbage.
- cybersaur, on 03/19/2009, -0/+14And if he dropped it then warranty shouldn't have covered 1 cent of the repairs!
I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest that this nimrod abused his Dell laptop as well. - tidu, on 03/19/2009, -0/+14I don't understand this article. "Either way you're screwed when it breaks"? You mean, when you drop it on the floor and break it? The guy's lucky that Apple paid for the personal damage he did. I believe the standard one year warranty covers malfunctions, but not that type of damage.
- tgc1, on 03/19/2009, -0/+14Crap. And i'm here posting this comment with a piece of paper and having to mail in my posts to Digg. Sonova bitch. It takes forever! Plus the post office nails me with the cost for those damn stamps.
- coheedsmonstar, on 03/19/2009, -1/+15I have a Dell xps m1710 laptop and the warranty I have has been great. I broke the plug out of stupidity but got a new one through the mail in like 2 days. The speakers stopped working, a couple of years later and they sent a repair guy to my house. He took it apart and fixed it up including offered to replace the shell since it was a little scratch up. I've been very pleased with the dell service.
- avalanchez71, on 03/19/2009, -0/+13I love comments on articles like this.
- jsffive, on 03/19/2009, -0/+12First, he compared a laptop WITH a warranty, vs. a laptop WITHOUT a warranty.
Second, he said his hard drive had a complete failure, so what was the quote for recovering the data? I worked for a PC repair outlet, and that was usually a $500.00 minimum, for sending the drive out to someone who could pull the platter and install in another drive with a good servo.
Surely, Apple isn't stupid enough to try and warranty data recovery, so what is the price quote for such a job? Or did they even see that as a choice? - lnxfi, on 03/19/2009, -3/+15You are an ass getting the dude from India off his script. Once they lose track of the script, it's all downhill even faster.
- ariez84, on 03/19/2009, -2/+14Im going to digg you down because you said good things about dell.
Thats how Digg works right? Digg anything related to Microsoft and PCs down and Digg Apple up? - jsffive, on 03/19/2009, -0/+12It was also odd comparing a laptop WITH a warranty vs. a laptop WITHOUT one...
Don't you think?
How much would the cost have been, if there hadn't been a warranty?
Plus, if he had a "complete hard drive failure", what about his data? Did they even offer to get that back for him? And if so, you do KNOW that the data recovery never comes for free, right? - BlueCadenza, on 03/19/2009, -1/+12Yeah, despite my disdain for Apple and all its yuppiness it sounds like their Genius Bar (its ridiculous names like this that also adds to my disdain) is a thousand times better than offerings like Geek Squad. They seem to actually be helpful and trained.
Granted, Geek Squad is part of a retailer giant and is bound to suck. - zaii7, on 03/19/2009, -4/+15Go banana!
- v0lrath, on 03/19/2009, -2/+12I will most likely be dugg down for this comment because nobody likes to hear about good experiences with customer support, but I'd like to share my wonderful experience with Dell.
I bought a Vostro 1400 laptop from Dell about a year and a half ago - it was cheap and I was on a budget. About 4 days before my warranty expired, the DVD drive started acting up. It wouldn't appear My Computer or the device manager unless I restarted my computer and only stayed there for 30 minutes or so. I decided to call dell the next evening.
After about 2 minutes on hold, an Indian-sounding CSR who spoke perfect English picked up the phone and asked what he could help me with. I told him my warranty was almost up and my DVD drive was giving me problems. He asked me to perform some standard tests and I told him that I had already done all of them, I knew what I was talking about, and there was definitely a hardware issue with the DVD drive. He told me he'd send me a new one right away because my warranty was almost up. The entire call took less than 15 minutes.
Two days later (keep in mind the original call was placed in the evening), the new DVD drive showed up at my house. Yep, they overnighted it to me, just to make sure I could install it and make sure it worked before my warranty expired. The same CSR called back a couple hours after it was delivered and asked if it had arrived and if I needed any help installing it. I told him I hadn't done it yet, and thanked him.
I've never had better customer support than I got from Dell, so let's all try to remember that for every horror story out there, there are lots of stories of things going just fine. - mparker21311, on 03/19/2009, -2/+12I'm tired of the Coca Cola/Pepsi and Mac/PC stereotypes with party affiliations.
- blankman, on 03/19/2009, -5/+14Or you can spend 5 freaken minutes on someone elses computer to google your problem and see if it's something you can do yourself.
- fezzasus, on 03/19/2009, -1/+10Googling doesn't get a replacement when under warranty. If you bother to read the article you will see he knows what's wrong, however needs to satisfy the people on the other end of the phone that the problem exists.
- i4ybrid, on 03/19/2009, -0/+9I think the Dell guy was helping him. If he had shipped his hard drive with his computer, I'm 99% sure they would have formatted it.
- LonelyTylenoL, on 03/19/2009, -4/+12Same thing happened to me. I made an appointment at a genius bar, they looked at my computer and ran some tests. They found my hard drive was on the brink of imploding, and I needed to transfer all my files to another computer so I could get a new hard drive, put an OS on it, and put the files back on it.
They seemed very helpful. If you have a mac set up an appointment at a genius bar so they can help you. - prodigitalson, on 03/19/2009, -0/+8Dugg for truth.
- scriptcoder, on 03/19/2009, -0/+8Data is never covered sir. Warranty only promises to restore the unit to the original factory condition, nothing less and nothing more. And only if the defect was caused by a manufacturer mistake or normal wear and tear.
- DemiRonin, on 03/19/2009, -1/+9Buried for him just being an idiot
- 1807, on 03/19/2009, -1/+9My Laptop of 1.5 years broke as well recently. I am STILL trying to get that mofo fixed and the local yokels I got to fix it STILL haven't gotten it fixed. That was over a month ago.
- duffman03, on 03/19/2009, -0/+8Desktop > Laptop
- scriptcoder, on 03/19/2009, -1/+9That's sad....
- LonelyTylenoL, on 03/19/2009, -0/+7Please elaborate.
- scriptcoder, on 03/19/2009, -2/+9Build a laptop? Not worth it.
We may be interested in computer but other people are interested in other thing in life. Stop being such a snob. - linagee, on 03/19/2009, -0/+6Customer: "I eat the cow you worship. Daily."
Dell India: "?!?!?!? *click*" - futurepastnow, on 03/19/2009, -0/+6In the process of building several computers, I've learned how to fix damn near anything that can go wrong with a desktop PC. It's really not difficult.
- linagee, on 03/19/2009, -0/+6@Rapter09: Apple wants you to get lost in their store and maybe buy some extra accessories while you're there. It's a business model.
- MGrizam, on 03/19/2009, -1/+7i know i get excited when i see mac or pc stories just for the retards in the comments...
- roxgod666, on 03/19/2009, -0/+6Try taking a ***** with a desktop.
- retrofitme, on 03/19/2009, -1/+7This article is absurd.
The author breaks his Mac (and his Dell too, though he's not willing to admit that) and then blames both companies for poor build quality? WTF? I think Apple should have charged him for the hard drive and installation. I cannot believe he's pissed because it took them a whole 36 hours to fix it for free. Some people just feel entitled I guess.
I've also dropped my Mac 'a couple of feet' by accident, and it is no worse for wear. It has a small dent by one of the firewire ports, but everything works great. I guess that is the difference between 'tech savvy' and not. - TVarmy, on 03/19/2009, -0/+6Yeah, I think he's just not that tech savvy. He did call the chargers "plugs." There are no Powerbooks these days, the equivalent line is the MacBook Pro.
- soopafly, on 03/19/2009, -1/+6How is this related in ANY way to the article?
- inactive, on 03/19/2009, -3/+8No, PC is for people who need a PC.
And Macs are for people who prefer Macs.
Stereotypes are for douche bags though. -
