- noclip, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think the real concern here is that distributors think everyone and their mother is out to steal their precious content. What happend with video is just stupid. Movie studios heard about the MPAA's woes with Napster, suddenly decided they were under attack and ended up raising awareness of how to pirate movies. Movie piracy was barely a problem in 2002 and it's grown at least tenfold since DRM has been injected into everything.
People want control over things they buy, and pirates will always find a way around any protection. All DRM is doing is screwing the people who are legitimately buying the content, which is what introduces them to piracy, which is why piracy is increasing. - theusualfate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Another reason to switch to Mac
- thatsiebguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Proving once again, that its not our Government that wants to control every waking moment of our life, but the Corporations.. All so they can pad their pockets... Why? Because the media's FUD has scared the corporations into thinking everyone and their grandma will steal content.. By the time Longwhore comes out, I will have already switched to my dualboot XP/OSX Mactel.. :D
- NINJ4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dude come on. The hackers/modding scene is SO going to bypass all this DRM ***** that anyone throws at them. DVD companies where all high and dandy when they released their protection, now look at the scene at hand - ONE guy cracked the toughest protection (and still can!). Give Longhorn a few months for the exploits to start showing up.
- tool_army, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0As bad as this news is, I'm actually quite glad I read this. I have been debating on whether to make the switch from a CRT to a LCD monitor sometime in the not-so-distant future, and this news lets me know that now isn't a good time. Unless LCD monitors with HDCP start rolling off the production lines soon...
BTW, the HD-era hasn't even started yet, and it's already starting to suck! Microsoft and these other big corporations need to chill! Stopping/reducing piracy is a good thing, but if it comes at the expense of compatibility issues for those of us that aren't doing anything illegal, I'll have a MAJOR issue with HDCP, OPM, etc. - Paiway, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sorry Microsoft, I'll keep watching pirated movies and listening to my pirated music on my SPARC IV machine running Linux Debian. Nya nya.
- Anunnaki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0*highly* amusing to me.
#1 - People are so much uninterested in their freedom of choice, they just use this windows that comes with their processor. They end up feeling "dependent" from windows bevor they get the clue.
#2 - MS play a dangerous game for themselves as they seem to think - still - that their windows is so great and people's dependecies (also read: "business dependencies", investments etc) big enough as they could actually more or less do what they want. I have a feeling it might not be that simple - lets see down the road..
Note: Who said corporations are not the government or vice versa? where did you read this? Don't you see the gov is there to ensure that the corporation dont get too much bothered by their respective customers ? - salome191, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this is rediculous.... microsoft can go to hell for all i care... i'm getting a mac.
- Genotik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Lmao. Wow. It's amazing how I'm getting less and less excited by Longhorn as the minutes pass. I'll probably keep XP or even go Linux if Longhorn doesn't make a huge kickass comeback in the feature list.
- xtremesniper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow either this is some freaky joke or I'm really not looking forward to Longhorn anymore. I think XP is where it ends for long good while... but then again that could be just me.
- adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Jesus.....titty.....*****.....christ....
this is beyond *****. Soon these companies will just hand out small packs of Vaseline with our purchases, so they can shove that stick a little farther and a little easier.... - eclectro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0^^^The good news is that the WINE project is making A LOT of progress, so you should have a reasonable alternative when Lamehorn shows up.
- deviationer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0and that TransGaming/XWine/Cedeg CRAP just does NOT cut it on linux. We need at least 90% of the same gaming performace on linux (when compared to windows).

XP is fine for me... I run processor/RAM intensive programs and have NO problem whatsoever. These programs include AE 6.5, Premiere Pro 1.5, and Encore 1.5. I have also run Maya Learner's Edition and such and have had no issues. So now, tell me why I shouldn't be dependent on good ol' MS if everything works and I don't feel limited to the least bit? Don't tell me I should start running Linux just to be hardcore and rebellious. And please don't tell me to start getting OpenOffice - sorry, I like having inustry standard software AND equipment in my home.
-Greg - Mediaright, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dito the usualfate. Go mac.
- gregcotten, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0^^I meant "industry standard" - sorry

In related news, Manson, Ohio-based Lens Makers has announced their new line of DRM-enabled eyewear, called Spectracles. The eye glasses will feature advanced features including: AUTOFocus, SightFinder and BATView.
Of particular note is the BATView feature, which promises to interoperate with Microsoft Longhorn's PVP-OPM technology. This new technology, developed by Dr. William Edward Ville at the University of Gatesworth, will empower content producers and owners to prevent illicit viewing of their material.
"The primary feature of BATView is straightforward," stated Dr. Ville, also Chairman of the Gatesworth Technology Misappropriation Board of Greater Yursoscrewed. "If, for example, a user attempts to view an HDTV video stream without having acquired a license, BATView will trigger embedded electrophosphomomatons and the wearer will be blind! It's absolutely brilliant!" cackled Dr. Ville.

Not really. - teknotant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If they keep stripping the new features away we are going to be left with an windows XP with RSS. I think I would rather go all out Mac and Linux if this comes out.
- jediboytj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Trusted Computing is really starting to show its ugly head. some people said it wasnt true, others said it would never happen....
http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/~rja14/tcpa-faq.html - rewritable, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0After hearing this I will porbably keep XP for a year or two after longhorn comes out and thats it for me. I have used Windows since 3.1 and XP will be my last OS from Microsoft.
I am not being "rebelious" but I am not having my computer control what I can and cannot see so some execs can get richer and fatter.
I will be stepping up my speed in learning Linux unless the new Macs will somehow run on AMD systems. - VinCenT13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0God this is *****..but I'm pretty sure that a Russian 12 year old that never leaves his basement will have a way around this figured out within 48 hours, just like the copy protection on movies it never lasts long. By the time that games are saying you need longhorn there will be a very easy way around that so we can again pirate to our hearts content. I hope microst takes a huge profit decrease for this, piracy isn't there business. If your gunna use longhorn steal it, and ***** microsoft for being such *****
- deviationer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't like this like many people but you CAN'T just say move to another OS when you are a hardcore gamer. Windows is your only choice. So just stay with XP
- hypeiv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0jeez... MPAA sucks
- Jammerdelray, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I seriously doubt they are going to get away with this....with other os's offering better video they better not...or oops there goes some market share.
- Logal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0***** me sideways.. HDCP is already a pain in the ass with my new HD set using HDMI, I've gotta turn off and on the cable box just to switch between analog channels. total *****.
- xedeon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This sucks to the core I will never buy a M$ product again!!!
- MikeZila, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That's it. The next new computer I buy will be a Mac. They're getting better and better for games by the day. With UT2k4, Halo, DoomIII, I don't need to put up with this Windows-owns-all-your-media *****.
On a side note, I've never once tried to view any copy protected content at all, so even if this were in place right now, I wouldn't know about it. It's just the thought of them wanting that much control over what you do with your own computer that pisses me off.
OSX, ahoy. - Snowknight26, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Too bad they butchered the article and everyone is complaining. The whole point of this is to make sure "protected content stays protected"..! Yes, you'll be able to watch your home videos, systm, and any other pirated videos (eheh) just fine. Its only protected content that'll be restricted.. Probably things like streaming movies you bought from a website, or high-def video from your TV channel provider. And look, its not only Microsoft thats doing it. Toshiba's HD-DVD's will have the same features.. so will Blu-Ray. All Microsoft is doing is complying with Toshiba's standards. If they didn't implement such a feature, Toshiba would probably sue Microsoft for not going with their requirements.
People should REALLY read the articles and NOT just the title.
And enough with this anti-Microsoft environment. Typical stereotypical attitude. - AdamCo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good advice PraAm500, I did switch to Linux and have little problem. You probably used linux once back in the 90's and now you are basing what you know from then on what you are saying now. Get a current distro like Suse 9.3. I have no problems with drivers. I've never had to install drivers from a manufacturers CD, just plug it in and it works. I'm sorry you struggle, but not all of us do.
- mattmacg4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The same is probaly to follow with Apple. Just think about it. Toshiba's HD-DVD already has this same technology built in to their specs with Blu-ray likely to follow. If Apple doesn't integrate this new technology into their software and hardware I doubt if you'll ever see a Mac with next generation DVD drives. And we all know that would never happen, especially since Apple has already embraced HD-DVD in their Pro Apps and has already publically endorsed Blu-ray.
- ProAm500, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You people are killing me with the Mac stuff. YOu really dont think Apple will do somethign like this in the future with the way they lockdown hardware, you got another thing coming. And if you this is a big deal to the normal consumer, WRONG. Many people will not care or notice this. They will buy computers with Longhorn, along witha new monitor and not care. So relax, switch to your Linux, struggle with compiling your kernals, or apps, or scouring for drivers.
- ProAm500, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I havent used Linux in a while because I have no real need to. All I'm saying is people are going a little overboard with the story. Its only gnna be content thats already protected, which I dont have a problem with. Plus, like mattmacg4 said, as well as myself, this will happen with Apple also, so for the people that are liek "I cant wait for x86 Apple so I can switch" dont think Apple wont do this.........
Didnt I read soemthing that Intel is doing something like this natively in the chips or soemthign liek that... - AdamCo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Not everyone who uses Linux is "rebelling", these stereotypes are just as bad as the people you are criticizing.
Gregcotten, we are glad Windows is good for you, thank you for informing us. If you like it, stick with it. By the way, I run microsoft office on Linux also. - rousehouse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0For me, this is a deal breaker.
- npacheco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0MS Fanboy comments, classic.
- avaugha4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0strip out all the new features,
add restrictive DRM "features"
???
Die - rzklkng, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Let's see how soon MS will announce plans to rollback this feature.
- _Caboose_, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'll wait for someone to hack Longhorn and take this 'feature' out, THEN I'll buy it ;)
Either that, or I'll get a Mac. - yamix00, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm not buying 2 more monitors, screw you microsoft, burn you greedy mofos.
I sh4ll h4x0rz ur m0nit0rz! - jspear, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Is there a reason why no one is catching that this isn't Microsoft's idea, but Hollywood's? Microsoft is just trying to ensure there is content to play on the computer.
- yamix00, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0As a side note, they are screwing the honest people who won't crack it. Sounds like gun control laws. Oh wait, do they both involve freedom?
- IraqManiac, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0wow ***** longhorny linux 4 lyfe
"Or at least know that you could be setting yourself up for disappointment."
no, I'm not. I think you should just go whack off to some longhorn build 5086 screenshots - adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0^^lol, hell yeah...
- johnxstone, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Longhorn is also going to anally rape your mother if you try to watch a Disney©®™£ movie... At all.
