- Saxonx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Thats cool. I would rather have this though.

Now that skype out is free for a limited time, its the perfect VOIP phone.- inigomntoya, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This Linksys phone is great for businesses using Asterisk or another internal VoIP solution.
But you are right, that Netgear phone is sweet! It would be very ideal for a home user. Linksys should have picked up on what Netgear is betting on... - Guspaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Linksys already makes a cordless VoIP/Skype phone:

It just doesn't do WiFi, only "regular" cordless. But it also costs 1/3 what these new phones do, and it can sort of do the same thing (VoIP without a cord) so long as you stay in your own house. And as you said, considering Skype is free until the end of the year, $100 canadian is pretty nice for Linksys's cordless skype phone.

- nessup, on 10/12/2007, -11/+2Just to set the record straight: VoIP is a voice chat protocol, not a term for voice chat over the Internet.
- flamingmb, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3@ nessup
Voice over INTERNET Protocol. yeah I guess it dosent have anything to do with the internet......... - Tyrel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Vonage already has a WiFi phone for their service: http://www.vonage.com/device.php?type=F1000
And it's only $129.99 ($79.99 after instant rebate), not $219.99 or $369.99 like these. Sure, maybe Vonage's doesn't have a color screen or whatever, but it's just a phone.- rsm3000, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2Skype is free.
- KillaGoat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Try cancelling your vonage account and you'll see how much value this phone has..
- Tyrel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Can you get a local telephone # with your "FREE" Skype that people can call you at? Can you also use normal telephones with Skype? Can you get an 800# that rings to your Skype phone? No? What about at least some sort of 911 service? Hmmm... I can do that with Vonage, and I get free calls to the US and Canada too, just like you.
Plus, I was refering to the cost of the phone itself, not the service....
As for KillaGoat... why in the world would anyone want to cancel Vonage service? That doesn't make sense. :-)
- soundman414, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2if skype could support these protocols and be a viable voip provider and keep the free part of it i think a ton of people would switch and it would make a very big change in the telecommunications industry. im thinking we are gonna see a lot more of these devices by the end of the year
- radu79, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You can use Skype on a PocketPC, which is cheaper than 300 USD.
I have a Torq P120 phone (GSM quad band, PocketPC), and it's really useful to use Skype rather than the GSM system, where a hotspot is available. T-Mobile charges me 1.6 USD/minute for some international calls, and on Skype are either free, or 8 Euro cents/minute. - jsp317, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2i just me damn. do we all have to be exactly right on here. i guess so people are quick to correct us. its like they look down on you for not being exactly right. don't miss spell a word either or they will jump your ass too. i guess they have to show off just how smart they are. I'm proud your educated and know your ***** but do you really feel you must correct people when you know what they meant? i don't mean to take out on you but i see it in almost every digg.
- Pwelborn1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7"I'm proud your educated..."
It should actually be: I'm proud YOU'RE educated... because you're is a contraction which is short for "you are". - cameron074, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1want some cheese with that whine?
- Pwelborn1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7"I'm proud your educated..."
- mooninite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If the phone runs Linux like one of their routers, I'll buy it.
- JimXugle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I want an Open source WiPhone too!
Tor-Routed, Encrypted Converstions w/o a server.
WIRETAP THAT, NSA! - inigomntoya, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It is likely running VxWorks - like most of their latest routers... That pissed off a lot of people when they made THAT change...
- JimXugle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I want an Open source WiPhone too!
- subway18223, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1When I saw the "G" I thought it was some type of gangster phone.
- krakelohm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Word
- prelude619, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1subway18223 you're stupid (but I mean it in a loving kind of way just cuz it was funny!!)
~mario - Technopundit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2About this 911 business, almost all police departments have dispatcher phone numbers which are not 911. Of course if you need to boot your PC before you can make an emergency call, you're in deep do-do.
- mlem, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0This is old news. I posted this news a while back:
http://digg.com/technology/New_Linksys_WiFi_Phone_Available_for_Preorder
There's also a wiki up with information about the phone:
http://www.voip-info.org/wiki/view/Linksys WIP300 - Animosity, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Didn't the IEEE reject the 802.11g standard as-is?
- oepapel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You're confusing g with n. 802.11n was recently rejected as is. g has been ratified for a long time now.
- kderby2000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Skype is great, but they really need to fix the outbound caller ID display before most will take it seriously.
- gorndog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have high hopes for a carrier independent, wi-fi enabled GSM phone, such as the Falcon announced by Broadvoice. www.broadvoice.com You get two phone numbers, one for Wi-Fi (broadvoice) and one for GSM. On the downside, unlike the UMA (Unlicensed Mobile Access) approach, there is no "handoff between Wi-Fi and GSM. But on the flip side, you aren't paying your mobile company for the minutes while using the phone on Wi-Fi (something the mobile carriers won't say yet how much they plan to charge for that.)
- gorndog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So a little competition to the mobile industry is a great thing to see. This Broadvoice Falcon phnone, the Linksys phone, the NetGear Skype phone -- all very interesting twists. It will be fun!
- mouchfortyone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0watch for a new breed of mobile wireless phone hackers.
- oepapel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Exactly why would i care about hackers hacking my wifi phone?
Last time I checked, Skype was offering free calls within the US and Canada. But what about elsewhere you say? Skype is a prepaid service. My balance is 0.00. Unless they hack in and ADD money, there's not a whole lot for them to do.
Identity theft or impersonation? They would have much better success hacking a standard phone and impersonating me.
Not on Skype? Vonage offers flat rate plans so you pay one price. Other VOIP plan offerings are similar.
Seriously, this is really a non-issue.
