- ausdigger, on 09/15/2009, -1/+13no improved battery life, barely noticeable weight difference, additional cost for a system that should be cheaper. there is no point to it.
- Dougman82, on 06/02/2009, -1/+13Except they're silent. I'm always aware of the sounds HDDs make.
- TechEvil, on 06/02/2009, -2/+14I voted on this. Acer Aspire One. I bought one about a month ago. Amazon has a 6cell xp version for under $300. I love it, worth the money.
- PseudoThink, on 06/02/2009, -1/+10My Samsung NC20 has been awesome. Full size keyboard, 1280x800 display. Small difference in size, moderate difference in price, huge difference in functionality, between it and the 10" netbooks with small keyboards and 1024x600 displays.
- TVarmy, on 06/02/2009, -0/+7Right next to the dirt cheap SSDs that can hold all your music in a sub-$400 computer.
- jawni, on 06/02/2009, -1/+6Love my nc10
- kvgirard, on 06/02/2009, -0/+5i just bought the 1000ha. its the same except for the battery, lack of wireless n, and lack of bluetooth. in the HA model you get "7 hours" of battery life. I get about 4-5 hours under light use and taking notes in classes. I never thought i would get a netbook until my friend and i strolled into microcenter and we ended up walking out with them. They are very nice machines and i am very glad i bought one. i was very impressed by the fact that asus included a 2 partition hard drive. One has xp installed and the other is blank. I immediately put ubuntu on there. the LED lit screen is also vibrant and crisp. i was impressed and highly recommend them to anyone.
- vikblazin, on 06/02/2009, -1/+5im thinking of getting the NC10
- Callesen, on 06/02/2009, -0/+3Heh, I was about one paycheck from picking up an NC20 - but then the Lenovo S12 was announced, and it was back to the waiting game for me.
I just can't say no to that sweet, sweet HDMI out. - bringitontimx, on 06/02/2009, -1/+4Wind U123 6-Cell is what I have now.
I'm hoping for some ION-based notebooks to ship soon. And maybe the increase of max RAM to 4GB? - skunkman62, on 06/02/2009, -1/+3love my dell mini 9 / ubuntu 9.4 under
- yocouchdigga, on 06/02/2009, -2/+4Tempted to pick up the Asus...
- Bicep, on 07/07/2009, -0/+2Did you know you can buy a FULL Laptop, $299 with Ubuntu Linux from Dell instead? It's the Dell Inspiron 15n preloaded with Ubuntu, here are the specs:
IntelĀ® CeleronĀ® 585 (1MB cache/2.16GHz/667Mhz FSB), Ubuntu GNU/Linux Desktop Edition version 8.10, Glossy, widescreen 15.6 inch display (1366x768), 2GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 at 800MHz, 160GB SATA Hard Drive (5400RPM), Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X4500HD, AND $13.8 Billion dollars worth of FREE open source software for you to use/share/enjoy
Check it out here:
http://digg.com/linux_unix/299_Dell_Ubuntu_Linux_L ... - rolf, on 06/02/2009, -0/+21000ha is older, the He has the newer 280 Atom processor instead of the 270 and can handle HD video better. Also, the He fixed the placement of the right shift button on the keyboard, that people were complaining about on the HA and earlier models.
The only good thing about the HA is that they still pre-installed Linux on it and gave you an upgrade of a SSD drive (probably cheap) since they saved on the Windows tax. They don't do that anymore:( That's one reason I was going to buy an eeePC but probably go with an always innovating netbook now rather than get an older chipset. - wefarrell, on 06/02/2009, -0/+2How's the battery life? I had an Acer laptop and while it was way cheaper than laptops with similar specs the battery was total ***** and after a year only lasted like 1/2 an hour.
- slochewie, on 06/02/2009, -0/+2mini 10 and mini 10v are different beasts. 10v is a 9 in a 10 form factor and thus worthy of the hackintosh treatment
- bigplrbear, on 06/02/2009, -1/+3I feel bad that my Acer Aspire One that I just bought for $300 is faster than my computer tower that I bought in 2006 for $550 :/
- SuperJimmyJimbo, on 06/02/2009, -1/+3love my AAO
- inactive, on 06/02/2009, -3/+4What about the Asus EEE PC 1000HA is that any good compared to 1000HE ?
- TVarmy, on 06/02/2009, -0/+1Isn't Ubuntu an install option for the Dell Mini, or did Dell not offer that?
- TVarmy, on 06/02/2009, -1/+2I kind of wish it was a side-by-side comparison, rather than the most popular ones named in the comments. Still, crowds can be wise, as evidenced by this site.

- redrabbit, on 06/02/2009, -0/+1It's Dell's customized version of Ubuntu...8.10 I think. I'm not sure how well a vanilla 9.04 installation works on it.
- TechEvil, on 06/05/2009, -0/+1I get a good 8 hours out of it if I stretch it. Normal is around 4-6 hours depending on what you are doing though.
- nZeeR, on 06/02/2009, -0/+1You can put OSX on it natively, only thing that needs to change is the mini pcie wireless card ( you can pick up an airport extreme card off ebay for ~20)
Runs great, battery life is fine under OSX as well. - mikezburke, on 09/24/2009, -0/+1Aspire One with Ubuntu netbook remix is pretty sweet!
- Bicep, on 06/29/2009, -0/+1Is it really true that Windows 7 Starter Edition "restricts" the user from personalization features for changing desktop backgrounds, window colors, or sound schemes? And I can't attach a second monitor? So if I want to see a bigger screen with Starter Edition, I can't? That's what it says here: http://www.thewindowsclub.com/features-limitations ...
And there's people out there saying Linux is limited in functionality? Are you kidding me? That is hilarious!
It's like David M Williams at itwire.com says about the name Windows Starter Edition, "Is Microsoft saying that people who buy netbooks are new to computing?"
No Thanks. I'll stick with my GNU/Linux, and the FREEDOM to use an operating system how I want.. like being able to attach a second monitor and change my desktop wallpaper for instance.
Really, FREE YOURSELF, Use GNU/LINUX! | linux.com | getgnulinux.org | ubuntuguide.org | whylinuxisbetter.net | openoffice.org | humans-enabled.com - TheBigBad, on 06/02/2009, -0/+1Why wasn't that even on the list?
- inactive, on 06/02/2009, -0/+1The HDD on my LG X110 netbook is more silent then my Cat. The only noise thats come from my Netbook is from the fan and that too when i am in an extremely quite area.
- inactive, on 06/02/2009, -1/+1Yea, I own one. And I'm posting from one now.
- snupples, on 06/02/2009, -1/+1I have the 6 cell version and the battery life is phenomenal. I'd avoid the 3 cell version.
- lemur, on 06/02/2009, -1/+1BUT I LIKE SSD
SSD is new and cool, and I don't want a new and cool gadget without it. My current laptop already has an HD. - Pegritz, on 06/02/2009, -1/+1I have a *previous* generation Aspire One--the ones they put out immediately before the generation depicted in the article--and I absolutely love it. Yeah, battery life could be a little better, but that's ultimately irrelevant since I'm never more than a few feet from an outlet.
- purduecory, on 06/02/2009, -5/+4Lenovo S10 ftw
- rolf, on 06/02/2009, -2/+1I hope the Always Innovating netbook really gets released this month:
http://gizmodo.com/5162584/first-hands-on-touch-bo ... http://www.alwaysinnovating.com/home/index.htm
In case it doesn't, what are the best Linux pre-installed Netbooks? (I can install Linux, but don't feel like giving Redmond money with my purchase...) - enozten, on 06/02/2009, -2/+1I have a samsung nc20 and a friend with the nc10
both have super long battery life, but the 20 has a 12" screen with 1280x800 resolution which makes a HUGE difference
and a 97% keyboard as opposed to a 92% which also seems small but makes an incredible difference
it's slow, but if you maximize the efficiency of xp and firefox it's fine.
my battery life on power saving mode is 7 hours, and if i'm doing something that requires processor power like watching movies i still get about 5 hours. that's fantastic! - duihomer, on 06/02/2009, -2/+1Picked up a Dell Mini 9 3 weeks ago during a 15% off refurb promotion. I normally don't go for refurb units, but I got it with 2GB RAM, 16GB SSD, Ubuntu, for just under $300 shipped. What a steal. Been using it daily and besides the tiny keyboard with a funky layout which I'm still getting used to, it's proven to be a capable web surfer (it even plays Hulu full-screen decently).
- etx313, on 06/02/2009, -2/+1HP Mini 1000. I love mine, and it runs OSX with full hardware support.
- sikedsyko, on 06/02/2009, -2/+1the HP mini is 299 and I love mine
- phaoloo, on 06/01/2009, -9/+6I like Acer Aspire One :)
- redrabbit, on 06/02/2009, -4/+1If you want to install either Ubuntu or OS X on your netbook, don't get the Dell mini 10...unless they've changed the components since last I've looked.
- pben, on 06/02/2009, -5/+2The Dell mini 10 will not work as an Hackintosh, wrong video chip set.
- aforsberg, on 06/02/2009, -5/+2I have had many issues with my Aspire One. The HDD has crashed twice. I know this is not usually the manufacturer's fault, but they put the speaker RIGHT NEXT to the disk. The keyboard is a tad cramped, and on more than one occasion, the BIOS has been corrupted. Also note, this is with no modification at all on my part.
- Dougman82, on 06/02/2009, -7/+3...and not a one for under 300 bucks.
- adeelarshad82, on 06/02/2009, -7/+2Acer & Asus are definitely worth a consideration. The other three meh!!!
- chingy1788, on 06/02/2009, -7/+1Instant Fail on the MSI Wind because the Fn key is on the left of the Ctrl Key
