- Blah_Blah_Blah, on 10/12/2007, -4/+41nooo its too hot auugh x_x
- brandonr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+35I'll ditch my desktop when I can build a laptop.
- santiago1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23 Laptops are great for like work and such, where being mobile is the name of the game, but I'll always revert back to my desktop for the serious home-built gaming rig!
- Neticule, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18A big reason they are outselling, is that alot of people just upgrade their pc for years and years, and never buy a "new" one. With laptops however you are forced to buy a whole new one when its getting out of date.
- RichPowers, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14I guess I'm a dinosaur then. I'll use my desktop with my big ass (but amazing) CRT monitor to the end!
- heymark, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Didn't this happen last year?
- phpirate, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12Its true. I've gotten rid of my desktop machine and just use my laptop now. They're affordable and portable. If I want to do some gaming I'll just get a wii60
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Duh. Most people already HAVE desktops.
That's like saying that ten years after cars come out "tires are outselling cars!".
I have four laptops, but frankly I hardly use them except when I'm tired of working on all my desktops and just want to sit back somewhere more comfortable (or on occasions where lengthy travel is necessary). - slackerbox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Well, you can't really build a laptop by gathering parts on your own. OEM desktop systems are really lame. Pretty much everyone I know has either built their system, or had someone do it for them. I, myself, have built a few for a couple different people.
- saska, on 10/12/2007, -1/+790% of the time if I am logged into my desktop it's through a remote connection from my laptop. The portability wins unless I'm sitting down to edit video and want to be right on the box that's encoding. I'm just about ready to buy a true portable multimedia rig and leave the desktop behind.
Desktops are much more affordable if you always compute in the same place. If you want to be mobile, though, you'll earn back the price difference in productivity time before the laptop is obsolete. - Blah_Blah_Blah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I think this just means less people are buying full desktops, i dont think PC world can track the amount of people that build their computer from many parts.
- daprice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Not too surprising with the prevalence of wireless internet. I haven't bought a desktop machine for home use in over 5 years (I do buy desktop machines at my work). I'm not much of a gamer, so I don't need a machine that I can "hotrod", and at home I don't like being stuck at a desk when I work at a desk during the day. A wireless laptop gives me the flexibility to sit on the sofa, at the breakfast table, in bed, or in the backyard while using email, browsing Digg, or even fiddling with code.
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Have you noticed how many students are buying laptops? In some colleges it is a requirement. Businesspeople are also buying more laptops than ever, often in addition to desktops. Laptops are also widely used in the entertainment industry, the media, the military, even our courts and government.
Laptop capabilities have come so close to desktops that it's primarily gamers and high-end users (devs, video editors, scientists, etc) that have any need for a desktop anymore. If laptops had truly upgradeable GPUs, there'd be even less need for desktops.
Game devs should keep this in mind. Don't be so eager to push Quad-SLI, Quad-core monstrosites requiring 1000W and industrial cooling on people. There's a much bigger market in mid-range systems, which includes all these new laptop users.
Microsoft might also think about laptop requirements a little more when finalizing Vista. - Thorlord, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4....
Laptops are selling more than desktops is actually EXPECTED since this is summer and BTSS time (back to school sales) Parents want to buy their college kids something to get good grades with at school. laptops are the prime object and are sold most often. it has been this way for many summers and it will continue to be this way. - VcTrMASO, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The average consumers are buying laptops because there isn't much of a price difference between buying a sempron with an LCD monitor and a sempron laptop. Both do what the average customer wants (Internet, work, schoolwork, ect.) but the laptop is portable and wireless.
- Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3That's why I fly my own private jet. Oh yeah, I mean, I don't have one because I don't have a buttload of money to spend just so I can be "mobile".
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If people were to build their own laptops, they would probably be about 20 pounds.
- kolop1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2 Laptops are now as powerful as most desktops. They are also under 1000$.
It used to be for an under 1000$ laptop you were getting a crap screen, a small had, and minimum ram. Not anymore. - WiteNoiz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That's what I thought... http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/n/a/2005/06/04/financial/f082711D73.DTL&sn=001&sc=696
- ericeman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Personally, with regards to power and accesibility, a laptop has been invaluable. With what I'm diong, the speed of my powerbook has been just fine. And I've sat it next to TV's for my video editing projects, on my desk for writing, on the go for sharing my video projects and files with my video-editing pals. It's all just sort of worked out. That's a more professional or work related mindset though.
I can understand laptops becoming mainstream with, other people said this, that on the fly mentality. Take it to Starbucks or McDonalds, slip it in your car, use it in bed or on the couch. - somesthetic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I replaced my desktop with my laptop just because I wanted more desk space, and I wanted to be able to use my computer in places other than my desk.
to that end, its been a terrific success.
occasionally I feel bad that I could have got a lot more if I had went the desktop route, but I'm not a PC Gamer, so it probably would have gone to waste. - sakuraz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2but the interesting thing is... in my uni, University of Sydney, hardly anyone uses it, let alone bring it.
- cshontz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I think I've bought my last desktop. I prefer my laptop for everything, and I'm a medium-end gamer. For more serious gaming, next generation consoles are starting to look pretty swiit.
- vandalet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I had the same notebook for like 3 years, and it was used when i got it. So recently when i noticed that you could get a decent notebook for around $500-600, i decided to get a new Acer Aspire. I am very happy with the decision.
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They mean people buying what PC World's advertizers pay them to give good reviews to.
- theone3, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5I can't go without my dual screen. Still, My next PC will be definately be a laptop. Screw the games, I'm sick of not being able to take my machine with me.
- itsmekirby, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I'm just like you, and I can understand why this is still a choice for many people. I just don't like the image given by an LCD, it just doesn't agree with my eyes no matter what the redraw rate it (or maybe I just havn't seen an expensive enough LCD panel)
So my logic is why spend more for a lower quality image when I don't care at all if I have a humongous 30 lb hunk of monitor sticking off the back of my desk. It doesn't bother me at all so the choice is clear.
The arguments for it being prettiness, efficiency, and DVI. None of these I need just yet. - cvrefugee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just sold my four-month old laptop on eBay...damn impulse buy!
- kolop1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2had = hd
- kenshu7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'd prefer a laptop, as long as it doesn't explode :)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's probably the 10th time in the last 2 years that I hear that "laptops are outselling desktops for the first time". How many "first times" are there?
This is dumb. I'm gonna report it. - kolop1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2 What's a swiit?
- jmz635, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They mean PC World, in the UK. Its one of the biggest computer retailers.
www.pcworld.co.uk
I saw this story in todays newspaper. - skartel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Portability rules! I think one of the reasons is that so many students are purchasing laptops. In my high school it is a requirement to have a laptop for every class.
My last two computer purchases have been laptops for that reason, but I think I will switch to desktops because they
- Are Cheaper
- Are Easier/Cheaper to Upgrade
- Are Easier to repair
- Can pack more in, higher specs and better for gaming.
But let me tell you, nothing beats being able to be connected anywhere and everywhere. I'll always have a laptop just in case (even if it is out of date). - av4rice, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3For the first time, eh? More like the THIRD time.
http://www.engadget.com/2005/06/04/laptops-outsell-desktops-for-the-first-time-again/
Hey look, the same "news" broke in 2003 and in 2005. A whole year ago, it was already a joke to re-report this story. - will0861, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's no suprise that laptops are outselling desktops since the introduction of the spontaneously combusting MacBooks........
But seriously, my wife and I each have laptop, and one Powermac G4 on the desk. I was planning to get a new MacPro when they come out, but the MBP is pretty sweet, and as long as it doesn't melt would be a great repalcement for the desktop, especially with an LCD monitor and keyboard. As internet becomes more widely available with things like EVDO, I'm sure there will be plenty of households that go totally wireless, no landlines, no DSL/cable. - jayred, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Since when did PCWorld become a retailer?
- Agkellyboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Whoa there Mastercheif, don't wanna burn off those chest hairs. (160 F at time of writing)
I can easily the public's switch over to the portable life. With Apple marketing for that on-the-go production lifestyle and processors reaching the speed of desktops, there's no reason to go with a low-mid range desktop with the wide variety of laptops around these days. However, I completely agree that the gaming world will stick to the desktop behemoths for now. How can I take H34DSH0TK1LR666 seriously if he's playing while sipping a latte in Starbucks? - trollick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Can you set up a Beowulf cluster of laptops?
- immortalc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah. Laptops are great. We have 3 laptops and 1 desktop that acts as our "server."
- pgup, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2This may be a result of more kids going to college than ever..?
- haxx4, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Does PC World even sel PCs?
- Gunblade, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Hopefully more people are building their own damn computers
- mcrbids, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Dual screen is why I love my laptop! My Dell Inspiron 600m combined with XWindows and Fedora Core 3 Linux lets me run "dual head", even at different resolutions, with a single, virtual desktop. I can seamlessly drag windows back and forth between the two monitors.
I had to give up something, though, moving from desktop to laptop. 2.5 years ago, when I got my laptop, I had to squeeze down my disk space from 160 GB all the way down to just 60. That was PAINFUL. Only now, 2 years later, am I able to get back up to 160 GB, and I just haven't done it, yet. - jamiemcparland, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0duh!
- pierrelourens, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0If I had to buy *one* computer I'd buy a laptop (which is why I'm typing this on a Macbook). I would have to sacrifice upgradeability and price, though. If I had the option to buy two computers, I would custom build a PC and buy an ultra portable laptop for real on the go stuff.
- wtf00, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3I love laptops... I wish they were more upgradable as desktop... I have IBM laptop and I buid gaming desktop..
- allrite, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1It was bound to happen. I hate the wires (I guess everybody does). Why let your whole desk space occupied by the big clumsy desktop (pardon the irony ;))
About gaming, well I anyways like only strategy games like AOE, Caesar and Civilization. And they run perfectly well on laptops. - mastercheif, on 10/12/2007, -17/+9*Hugs his new macbook*
- friend18, on 10/12/2007, -14/+2I have a laptop. G4 Ibook. Planning on upgrading to a macbook.
