- jshhmr, on 11/05/2009, -4/+30Yeah, but does the Microsoft tablet come with the smug that the Apple one has?
- leprix, on 11/05/2009, -0/+17You realize these are *completely* different products, right?
- neutron7, on 11/05/2009, -2/+15no it wont! apple has patented "attaching smug to a portable computing device"
- fluidfoundation, on 11/05/2009, -0/+13I love Apple UI's, but damn, they better bring something hardcore to compete with this. I want this yesterday.
- allnuts, on 11/05/2009, -0/+10I wish this came out sooner; I feel like the early years of college could have really benefited from something that makes the most mundane of obligations entertaining.
All I need now is an excuse to get one. - Balanced, on 11/05/2009, -0/+10Apple Tablet Abortionist, since there is no Apple Tablet actually released? Apple Table Contraceptive, perhaps?
- diggduggDOOM, on 11/05/2009, -1/+9Other than a few specialized tasks and professions, I really don't understand the hype on tablets.
Why would the average person want this over a comparable laptop/netbook/desktop? - rossisdead, on 11/05/2009, -0/+6How is this "leak" different from the video presentation for it from a month or two ago?
- theundone, on 11/05/2009, -0/+5I don't think it's so much wanting one over a regular laptop/netbook/desktop as it is wanting one in addition to.
- erichw1504, on 11/05/2009, -1/+5Wake me up before you go go!
- RonADiSH, on 11/05/2009, -0/+4i dont think he does
- tyme, on 11/05/2009, -1/+5Yeah, Apple better make their mythical, unreleased tablet better than Microsoft's mythical, unreleased tablet or else they will lose the mythical battle between these two mythically mythical devices when they are mythically released. Mythical. Duke Nukem Forever.
- Crimeodial, on 11/05/2009, -0/+4Selling 1 product per 1000 people would be a pretty sweet deal for any company.
- JumboJ3t, on 11/05/2009, -0/+4Would've rather you linked to the Gizmodo page that this article links to anyway: http://gizmodo.com/5380626/courier-user-interface- ...
- GaDgEtBoY86, on 11/05/2009, -0/+3Can't wait to see the final product and specs!
- fluidfoundation, on 11/05/2009, -0/+3Apple's leaning a bit more on the mythical side at this point.
Starcraft: Ghost. - jimrooney, on 11/05/2009, -2/+5Wake me up when you can read them outdoors.
Oh, and screw Kindle... I mean full systems, not proprietary crap. - swagv, on 11/05/2009, -0/+2I hate saggy diapers that leak.
- wpf999, on 11/05/2009, -0/+2How about going back to college? :-)
- Greg2k, on 11/05/2009, -0/+2First off, excuse me for using the word "dude", which seems to get you ticked off.
I'm just trying to point out the fact that neither a netbook nor a laptop nor a desktop are going to be used for the same tasks as this tablet would. You can't handwrite on a netbook, for example, save maybe the freak few that do have a touchscreen.
You can't read a book on a netbook like you could with this tablet. I mean yeah, theoretically you could, but that's not what a netbook is designed for.
Essentially, this Microsoft Courier is an interactive notepad, something a tonne of people still use today and are not willing to give up for a device which requires typing. That's a pretty significant factor. I for instance would never have a netbook with me during fieldwork because, well, it's still clunkier than a notepad and a pen.
Bottom line: I don't see why you're so surprised, the market for a device like this seems, at least to me, huge. - Rudegar, on 11/05/2009, -1/+3you can at night! :O
- apetrie, on 11/05/2009, -0/+2Its not meant to be used instead of a laptop/netbook/desktop. Its meant to be used instead of a pen and paper notebook + agenda + anything else that people use to jot down ideas or plans or organize information.
I'm not looking for something to replace my computer, I'm looking for something to replace my never ending series of notebooks. I want something I can take with me everywhere and store every bit of inspiration or information I want to. I'm a designer, I never want have a jumble of files and cut outs and this and that for a project again, I want it in one place digitally where I can access it. I love to cook and I want to save a recipe and make notes right on it without printing it out and then losing said notes.. I write music and I want to save snippets of writing and music that I come up with all in on place, not jot something down on a napkin when I'm inspired. The only thing you mentioned that could really do this and be portable is a netbook, and there is no way it would be as capable, convenient or ideally suited to these kinds of tasks as a Courier would be, assuming it will be as expected. - apetrie, on 11/05/2009, -0/+2If it actually met those needs in a truly usable and convenient way, I would have one. It does not, so I do not. On the other hand, I would buy this immediately providing I can afford it when it comes out.
Designers ARE average people. What about for personal use, like the recipe thing? A netbook most certainly does not allow me to do what I want to do with that. Hell, I could use the Courier to organize the huge Halloween party I have every year, do you think a netbook would actually be useful for that? Hardly. - Greg2k, on 11/05/2009, -0/+2Dude do you even get the point of one of these devices? Portability. Only a netbook can compare in portability (a traditional laptop usually has far too much processing power than that needed, reducing battery life, and a desktop is a desktop). And this seems much more comfortable to use for certain tasks.
I think it's a great idea. - deslock, on 11/05/2009, -0/+2Apple tablet cold shower?
Apple tablet candle snuffer? - JQP123, on 11/05/2009, -0/+2"Why would the average person want this over a comparable laptop/netbook/desktop?"
Usability and portability. Tablets now have the potential to replace most desktops and laptops, thanks to the multi-touch user interface. Apple and MS know this, even if the average Joe doesn't at this point.
This is just the beginning. Give it about a decade or so and people will see pictures of a clunky "desktop" computer setup and start to reminisce about the old days. - zephc, on 11/05/2009, -0/+2Did you mean to post that to the Zelda article?
- tondezz, on 11/05/2009, -0/+2I want one... it really sucks having to watch porn at work on my blackberry... with this I could just load up some pics at home sit behind my desk all day and hope no one asks me to get up. Fap Fap Fap
- Jektal, on 11/05/2009, -3/+5What they could do to make these "tablet" (looks like a book to me) PCs infinitely more appealing would be to simply:
1. Make Firefox or Chrome startup anytime the "tablet" is opened
2. Set the homepage to Wikipedia
3. Enable voice control for searching
4. Print "Don't Panic" on the cover in large, friendly letters - d3dm, on 11/05/2009, -0/+1Blah, I'm getting a #2 P and a Big Chief.
- tyme, on 11/05/2009, -0/+1>Apple's leaning a bit more on the mythical side at this point.
Yeah but they're not actually talking about an unreleased product. Everyone else is speculating about it, they've been mum. Not the same situation in Microsoft's case. - L0NER, on 11/05/2009, -1/+2Thats the problem...
The utopian tablet camp want the standard 'keyboard computer' to be replace with touch screens for home users.
The artistic camp wants a big tablet Wacom enabled laptop (15-17 incher) with a keyboard because take my photoshop shortcuts from us and we are like birds without wings. - Bbanda, on 11/05/2009, -0/+1Interesting concept but like every other tablet on the market its likely to be underpowered. These kind of products are pushing toward too small of a user base they need to broaden their market a bit more, but don't get me wrong I wouldn't mind owning one.
- zephc, on 11/05/2009, -1/+2Why would i want to carry around a huge book when I can have a functional computer in a cellphone form factor (iPhone, various Android phones, etc) that I can carry around in my pocket?
- paulishuku, on 11/05/2009, -0/+1The courier will be absolutely amazing.
I didn't see giz's link to the concept video of it.

A couple of years ago, I'll bet you said the same thing about the iPhone.
These type of products are pushing toward eventually replacing most modern desktops and laptops.
Tablets have been tried before and failed but things are different now ---- thanks to the multi-touch user interface. MS and Apple understand the enormous potential here and are prepared to push forward without too much regard for user opinion. They are that confident that user opinion will easily come around on this. - inactive, on 11/06/2009, -0/+1Somehow I think Apple and Microsoft want to sell more than 320,000 units in the US.
(And I didn't say that the 1 person would get it anyway.) - diggduggDOOM, on 11/05/2009, -0/+1And why would this be handled better by a tablet than a laptop/netbook?
- mkriss5681, on 11/06/2009, -0/+1Bah. That's what happens when I sneak Digg in during work and try not to get caught by my boss.
- JQP123, on 11/05/2009, -0/+1"The live journal idea is great but I just don't see a huge market for it."
I don't expect that live journal is the only app it is capable of running. - Bbanda, on 11/05/2009, -0/+1Not meaning to toot my own horn but I had an iphone day one and continue to say its the best device I've ever owned, excuse the fanboyism I swear I'm more of a microsoft guy. I agree completely tablets are different now but for some reason they keep dumbing them down. I can't seem to find a decent gaming tablet anywhere, they always crap out on the graphics cards. I'm hoping for some decent standalone multitouch monitors at this point, hp and dell recently released some attractive products. The only problem I see with the courier is that its meant to function as more of a netbook but I've already got a device for that and it fits in my pocket(iphone again). I need a tablet with some serious power. The live journal idea is great but I just don't see a huge market for it.
- WomensUnderwear, on 11/05/2009, -0/+1Is Barb male or female? Is Mashable the world record holder for most javascripts on one page, and the weakest comment spam filter in existence? ***** *****!
- diggduggDOOM, on 11/05/2009, -0/+1Fair enough. The gadget geeks will pick this up, but they always do. I don't think they really represent the average computer buyer, but they certainly influence trends.
- imabear, on 11/05/2009, -1/+1the home button looks familiar.
- jeremiahjw, on 11/05/2009, -1/+1I don't really need a laptop right now, so I don't plan on getting a tablet, be it a Mac or Microsoft tablet.
- diggduggDOOM, on 11/05/2009, -1/+1As a designer and music composer, you have a specialized profession/task, but only in as much as you may need to have a better interface.
As you said, a netbook meets these needs already. - ninjasnowman, on 11/05/2009, -0/+0I wonder how much this will be going for?
- superkendall, on 11/05/2009, -2/+2Coveted by who? I have no desire for a tablet - from Microsoft or Apple. They are too bulky to carry in a pocket. They are too small to use in place of a laptop. If I had to stretch I might say they would be kind of useful for looking at recipes but even there a laptop is fine and is so much more generally useful...
- diggduggDOOM, on 11/05/2009, -1/+1Designers are average people, but your average computer buyer probably isn't a designer.
Adding notes to recipes? Why can't this be accomplished via software?
You mentioned you have a "never ending series of notebooks", but, other than interface, I don't see how this wouldn't be just another in that series (although possibly more comparable to a netbook). Granted, you have very legitimate interface concerns as a designer.
"do you think a netbook would actually be useful for [organizing a huge Halloween party]?"
Without more information about the party, I can't see why not. - metaldwarf, on 11/05/2009, -1/+1Meh
