- Urkel, on 12/28/2007, -10/+56I guess this goes to show what a horrible reviewer Uncle Walt is. Back when the XPS One was released Engadget nailed his review by saying "Mossberg reviews the Gateway One, accidentally reviews the iMac again" for mentioning "iMac" more than he mentioned the product. And now there's this article which is suposed to show he's not a fanboy. It's a bit sickening but in todays tech then consumers have rightfully lost a lot of trust in "professional" reviewers.
Anyway, if given a choice between the two I'd choose neither. The All-In-One success with Apple is primarily due to the fact that there simply is no mid-range alternative. The All-in-one design is elegant in photos but reality is that IF people were given a choice then they'd prefer the $700 plain old computer box under the desk and a choice of 3rd party monitor that they don't have to throw away if the computer ever dies.
C'mon Apple. Give us a standard Mac that is fully upgradeable and doesn't cost $3000. My wallet is open. - mrfreeziexp, on 12/28/2007, -7/+47"The Supreme Pope of Tech Walter Mossberg"
I stopped reading after this. - RadiantBeing, on 12/28/2007, -6/+21Inaccurate. FTA: "I still recommend the iMac over the XPS One for several reasons..."
- Dwarfthemike, on 12/28/2007, -1/+14i work at a Dell kiosk and many people like the XPS One. They don't want the plain old computer box under their desk. they want the all-in-one wireless desktop. Consumers don't understand computers. To them, this is the future and all computers should be small and out of the way. The only thing that steers customers away from the One at our kiosk is the price tag.
I have a MacBook Pro btw. It's my main computer. I like the One mostly because it's got a desktop processor in it instead of the laptop stuff that's in the iMac (something they didn't seem to notice). - rebotfc, on 12/28/2007, -11/+21If you read/watch his review he doesn't actually say that the XPS is a better machine, the article is inaccurate.
- KnightWhoSaysNi, on 12/28/2007, -0/+10The iMac is not fully upgradable.
- DarkMeld, on 12/28/2007, -2/+11Thats hardly upgradeable except for the memory and maybe the video card.
What Urkel wants is a medium between the mac mini and the mac pro - tnoy, on 12/28/2007, -1/+9FYI, adding a couple USB devices does not make something "fully upgradeable."
- DarkMeld, on 12/28/2007, -2/+9The new gen iMacs run regular desktop core 2 duo's
- tnoy, on 12/28/2007, -0/+7The new iMacs all use Socket P mobile Core 2 Duo. Either a T7300 or T7700. The 2.8GHz Core 2 Extreme is a X7900.
They run with a 800MHz FSB instead of the desktop Core 2 Duo's 1066MHz . They're also limited to 667MHz DDR2 SO-DIMMs instead of the 800MHz or 1066MHz DDR2 DIMMs you can get in a desktop with a new Intel chipset. - wafflez, on 12/28/2007, -1/+8He's a GIGANTIC apple fanboy. even apple fanboys can't disagree. maybe the top reviewer of apples or something, but 'pope of tech'?!
- threemagic, on 12/28/2007, -2/+8Steve Nash bought one of each for all his team mates.
- PSUstoekl, on 12/28/2007, -7/+13"Better"? I fail to see the logic of a Vista Machine beating an iMac on the sole premise that it has a media card reader.
I'll take a fantastic OS, a better build quality, iLife and peace of mind over more Dell Hell any day, and so would Walt. Buried. - Chirp08, on 12/28/2007, -1/+7I fail to see the logic in acting like the iMac was god in the first place, it never claimed to be, it never was advertised to be, etc. etc. Its a freakin computer designed for your parents to use, not for power users. If you want a real, upgradeable, capable desktop get a Mac Pro, if you want a computer for browsing the web and occasional media get an iMac. The "better" machine is the one fits what you need it to do, end of story.
- ciano, on 12/28/2007, -1/+7My take on the whole Mac vs. PC situation is that Joe Average Mac Switcher is willing to pay a premium for an operating system that he likes better than Windows, because he doesn't feel like learning all the intricacies of the Windows OS, and he's sick of unexplained errors and things that go wrong for no reason. I'm not saying that Macs never fault, but I happen to be one such Joe Average Mac Switcher and I have a lot less to complain about with my new, overpriced yet perfectly functional and (for me) intuitive MacBook Pro. I'm just sayin'.
- Vector713, on 12/28/2007, -3/+8Hey *****, did you not watch the video?
The iMac is cheaper than the dell.
WTFV - nakile, on 12/28/2007, -2/+5I was watching CNBC when they interviewed him during a XPS One vs. iMac discussion. He mentions tons of advantages about the iMac, such as Leopard, the lower cost, included software, and better overall hardware to mention a few. He then goes on to say that he would still recommend the iMac over the Dell. However, he said if you wanted a Windows system, this is one of the best ways to go.
- ariez84, on 12/28/2007, -4/+7XPS One have better hardware, that makes it a better machine. The OS comes down to preference. I use both Vista and Leopard and they both work perfectly fine.
However Mossberg opinion is worth *****. Everyone knows this. - nintapple, on 12/28/2007, -3/+6if the iMac didn't have a chin, where would the apple icon go :)
- metaknite, on 12/28/2007, -1/+4You say that for 18,000 dollars you could build a superior Windows machine and then you'd say if you had oodles of money you would buy a Mac. That's as queer as a clockwork orange.
- yokozuka, on 12/28/2007, -7/+10He clearly says that the XPS is a better machine. Then he remarks that, while the Dell XPS One is a better machine, if you look at the operating system and the built-in software, the Apple iMac provides the best overall experience. But he clearly says that the Dell XPS One is the best machine, it has better hardware than the iMac. It's the software and the price that inclines the final balance to the iMac. So no, the article is accurate. And so is Mossberg's article and conclusion, which has good, solid arguments.
- dysonlu, on 12/28/2007, -0/+3This guy has that "magic touch" for making exciting technology sound boring.
- Naga10, on 12/28/2007, -0/+3Yes, you pay a premium for OS X.
By the way, what's the price tag on Vista? Oh, yes, $400. Leopard is $130. What a premium we pay. - blackjack75, on 12/28/2007, -1/+3Nah, it's for post-its. (real life experience here).
- antych, on 12/28/2007, -0/+2Just put Linux on it and everyone wins ;)
- blackjack75, on 12/28/2007, -0/+2Is that Supreme Pope as opposed to Level One Pope or something? In the old days I remember you were either the Pope of something or you were not.
- Quakes, on 12/28/2007, -0/+2Fun game: count the number of times he says "uh" in the video.
- nintapple, on 12/28/2007, -8/+10Buried as inaccurate. Mossberg DID NOT say the XPS One is a better machine.
Mossberg clearly said the dell has better hardware but comes with a price premium, then he goes on saying that he "would still recommend the iMac over the XPS One" since it is the total package (hardware, software, value) that matters in the end. - TubbyMcGee, on 12/28/2007, -0/+2Walt is an irrelevant old fart.
- geminitojanus, on 12/28/2007, -4/+6Direct quote from Mossberg: "I still recommend the iMac over the XPS One for several reasons other than hardware design."
So, erm, no, he clearly doesn't say the DellMac is better, and he does clearly recommend the iMac over the Dell for several reasons other than the hardware design (including the software, the price point). And after all, Mossberg has stated before he's still more of a fan of Apple's design than Dell's (or anyone else's).
It's a damned shame people can take what others say verbatim and still twist it around. First it's Will Smith (awww Hell no), now it's Mossberg. - thewump, on 12/28/2007, -1/+3Such a shame it has such a steaming pile of ***** of an OS preinstalled on it then.
- l0k0, on 12/28/2007, -1/+3I wouldn't say they all look the same, and I actually find Apples designs to be extremely sexy: from the iPhone to the new iMac.
- macuser, on 12/28/2007, -1/+3Sorry sarge. Macs are for people who want to get their stuff done with less hassle. PCs are for 1) gamers 2) accountants 3) cheap-ass 'I built it myself for less. Aren't I clever!" types and 4) people who shop for the lowest price, quality be damned.
Now that you mention it, maybe you're right. Those types sound mostly like something guys would do...
- crazzy88ss, on 12/28/2007, -0/+2"doesn't feel like learning all the intricacies of the Windows OS"
I was a windows user for 10 years before I got my first mac. At that time, there was no "intricacies" to learn. I got tired of all of the issues windows had that OSX does not. It's that simple. And I think that's a big reason so many people are switching. - pauleric, on 12/28/2007, -0/+2Saying "Zune" is not the point. The sensible (and superior) replacement for a MacPro is a linux server, not MS's overpriced software. He's right, the Pro is insanely overpriced...but it's beside the point for this article, which is about iMac vs. Dell XPS. The iMacs are reasonably priced if that's the kind of hardware you want to buy.
- Naga10, on 12/28/2007, -0/+2That is a lie. Both Leopard and Vista are buggy as *****. I just upgraded to Leopard, and I can attest to it.
And I'm probably what you'd call a Mac "fanboy". - virtualball, on 12/28/2007, -0/+2While I agree with what you're saying, I'd also like to add that Dell's tech support is SOOOO *****!!!! Though, Apple's has gotten worse, Dell always transfered me to India, even when I wanted to ask simple questions. Not to mention the massive wait times! I'd pay extra NOT to have that!
- Me1000, on 12/28/2007, -0/+2not really, I actually went to go check out the XPS one after I saw this,
I am infatuated with the new iMacs the 24" with the C2E is a beast in person.
I have yet to see the XPS in person, but so far I cant figure out why I should choose this over an iMac! - blackjack75, on 12/28/2007, -1/+2Adding to my own comment above, from newegg (which I assume has the best prices):
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N8 ...
One Dual-Core 2.33Ghz Xeon Woodcrest CPU is 480$. The lowest macpro you can get has two of these. Try to build a similar pc it will cost a similar price. - Me1000, on 12/28/2007, -0/+1Inaccurate,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ALvE2aEKoo
This video clearly shows you someone beating their mac! - Eallan, on 12/28/2007, -1/+2I've had so many more problems with Leopard then any windows OS including vista x64 when it first came out. When leopard isn't throwing kernel panics at me and having horrible airport issues it's a wonderful beast.
- rnawky, on 12/28/2007, -0/+1Nah not $4000. The $18,000 Mac has 16Gb of RAM and 2 Xeon Quad Core processors, 4 750Gb Hard Drives, and the 2 30'' displays are a large chunk of the price.
On Newegg, the 2 processors alone cost $1000 each for the 3Ghz chip. Add $500 for a good motherboard, Fill up all 16 RAM Channels with 2Gb RAM sticks, Another $1600 for 2 Top of the line Nvidia cards and you're already over $4000, and that's without a case, monitor, speakers, keyboard/mouse, or a power supply to power the monster.
All I'm saying is you could cram $18,000 worth of components into a PC.
Also 128Gb Solid State drives cost $3,219.99 on Newegg. - pauleric, on 12/28/2007, -1/+2Right now the iMac and laptops are competitively priced. But the mini and MacPro are very expensive. So no, I'd say that argument has not been put to rest, because Jobs will always charge as much as the market will bear. Switching to Intel just means now it's easier to compare the hardware.
- m3mn0n, on 12/28/2007, -1/+206:08 of the video... he says the iMac is the "overall" better machine
- Kamujin, on 12/28/2007, -0/+1Correction, Apple does not license OS X for installation on non-Apple hardware.
Never fear, you can put the major OS's on it. - Kamujin, on 12/28/2007, -0/+1Learn to tell the difference between hardware and software.
He says the Dell hardware is better.
Then in true fanboy style turns it into an OS review.
BTW, Dell probably would put OS X on it, but Apple won't license OS X. - inactive, on 12/28/2007, -0/+1Me too. I don't know why gizmodo take Mossberg so seriously, after the Bill Gates and Steve Jobs interview in the All Things Digital conference there's nothing remarkable about him.
- blackjack75, on 12/28/2007, -0/+1Actually for switchers, it's actually harder to get used to a mac than for a newcomer to the world of computing. Trust me I got my mother a mac mini to replace her pc (about the day she complained she had a poker program instead of outlook when she clicked on mail). It did take her quite a while to get used to it. She loves it now but if it wasn't for me telling her it was for her own good and the machine looking so cute I don't think she'd have made the move to such a different world (handling windows is very disturbing, really if you come from XP).
- rnawky, on 12/28/2007, -0/+1Yes, I would buy one just to have one. If I had all that money, I would probably already own a small supercomputer.
- Kamujin, on 12/28/2007, -0/+1Agreed.
Apple is a just wannabe monopolist selling B$D with their logo on it.
Far to evil for my tastes. -
