- Spuds2600, on 04/16/2008, -7/+74Gamers will buy ANYTHING that has the word "Gamer" on it. I was at Micro Center and saw a GAMING MOUSEPAD for $70.00 SEVENTY. I'm not kidding. And the guy said people buy it all the time. I saw a "gaming ethernet adapter" for $400. No joke. Guy said they sold like hotcakes.
Who wants to go into business with me to produce "Gaming air: Air for gamers"-- we'll tout it as increasing reflexes and performance.
Who's with me? - inactive, on 04/16/2008, -2/+5679 bucks for the Gskill DDR2 800mhz 4GB of ram (2 sticks)
Sweet deal... - myheaditches, on 04/16/2008, -1/+54This is technology. The highest end will always provide more performance for a disproportional amount of money. It's how it works, the new fast shiny stuff has fewer factories producing them, and fewer companies capable of it. In a year or two it'll be common place and something else will be the bleeding edge.
- kipmartin, on 04/16/2008, -1/+45forget faster memory. we need faster delivery from amazon.
- copypastry, on 04/16/2008, -0/+24Oh man what if we combined the adjectives "gaming" and "wedding"?
New GamingWedding cutlery set, ultra high performance spoons for the low low price of $1600 - azbmr, on 04/16/2008, -0/+19WILL BUY AGAIAN!!!! A+++++
- lamiaconfitor, on 04/16/2008, -1/+18Identify your bottlenecks people, your OS, Motherboard, Processor , RAM, Hard Drive... all of it.. If you care ID what you care bout and deal with it.
- chanop, on 04/16/2008, -1/+17So you're saying I bought that stuff for no reason?
- houndeyex, on 04/16/2008, -1/+16Maybe those gamers could just try to not suck and get 0.25% better at the game.
- oneofone2007, on 04/16/2008, -0/+15Statistically, Wikipedia is the worlds most accurate encyclopedia and information base. Again, that is... statistically speaking. Also I believe most things have to be sourced when they are placed on Wikipedia? Of course, sources can be falsified but that just adds another variable into the accuracy equation.
- yojiffyskippy, on 04/16/2008, -1/+16The VAST majority of users couldn't pass the Pepsi/Coke challenge with DDR2-vs-DDR3. Of course there are some rare applications where it matters but not for your average Joe-digger. It's the same with AMD-vs-INTEL uP, High Def TV -vs- Digital TV (on small screens), Starbucks Coffee -vs- Other Brands, etc etc...... It's all about branding and marketing. That's why it's a multi-billion dollar industry.
- Zaneris, on 04/16/2008, -0/+14As is always the case with cutting edge technology, you'll pay a premium for the best available, it's the way it has always been and always will be.
- trump48257, on 04/16/2008, -1/+15Or why don't you invest that money or pay bills. Don't buy something you're never gonna use--that's just poor personal economics.
- griz, on 04/16/2008, -0/+14I you can stay 1 step behind that bleeding edge you can save yourself a bundle. And it certainly will not cost you that bundle in productivity.
- TheSpook, on 04/16/2008, -1/+14That's what she said...
- Namco, on 04/16/2008, -1/+14No, he said he updated hiw whole rig for $280. Pay attention McFly!
- UMDWei, on 04/16/2008, -0/+12The same is true for anything "WEDDING" Piece of table cloth or chair cover = $5 to own. Same piece used in a wedding, and suddenly it's $25 just to rent it for a few hours.
- eq2s, on 04/16/2008, -0/+12"Our conclusion is very simple: you get the best bang for the buck if you stick to the mainstream of the memory market, which currently is still DDR2-800 or 1066, preferably at low latencies. DDR3-1066 and -1333 memory do not yet result in better performance, and so should only be considered by hardcore enthusiasts, who aim for maximum overclocking performance knowing that they will get little benefit for spending a fortune."
- akeating, on 04/16/2008, -0/+12Actually, if you gave it a higher O2 %, it wouldn't it give you better performance? If nothing else, it would make you feel a little better, right?
- thewump, on 04/16/2008, -0/+11I'll tell you what though, fast DISKS are. Recently installed Hardy Heron on a 10,000rpm drive and the entire experience is astonishingly brisk
- theaceoffire, on 04/16/2008, -1/+11I am pretty sure that $280 was the total cost of the items he listed.
- kipmartin, on 04/16/2008, -0/+10Wikipedia has consistently been shown to be a superior source. We hear about its shortcomings, but the fact is, studies show its an accurate, current, and extremely dependable source. Anything claiming it is unreliable or innacurate is based on flawed or anecdotal observation or heresay.
Name something better. Did you read the wiki? Pretty damned good, IMHO!--fairly definitive and timely. - po43292, on 04/16/2008, -0/+10^^ First buyer.
- unicronband, on 04/16/2008, -1/+10Mine goes to eleven.
- inactive, on 04/16/2008, -1/+10do you think using ***** makes you cool?
by looking at all your comments, it seems almost every one has '*****' in it. - BuckFush, on 04/16/2008, -0/+8I believe its called newegg.
- themastersb, on 04/16/2008, -2/+10You mean your memory goes as in memory in your brain? Because it seems you've forgotten how to articulate a sentence properly.
- inactive, on 04/16/2008, -0/+8DDR2 FTW.
Tom's hardware have lengthy articles but they are great and worth reading as they give you price comparisons, benchmak results for different configurations and site[give credit to] their sources for information and also how you can get maximum bang for your buck. A Great read. - therealkdog, on 04/16/2008, -5/+13Woah Woah What does Dance Dance Revolution have to do with any of this?
- DemonWasp, on 04/16/2008, -0/+7Alright folks, science time:
O2 is not flammable. It's an excellent oxidant (honestly, it's oxygen, what were you expecting). This is the reason behind one of accidents experienced by NASA in the Apollo program: the capsule was filled with a 100% oxygen atmosphere (reason being that if you're carrying air, you may as well make as much of it breathable as possible), and a spark ignited something. Rather than just smoldering and burning out, it burst into flames in the O2-rich environment, and overpressurised the cabin, trapping people inside.
Oxygen is also non-toxic at normal pressures. It does become toxic at higher pressures, around 2.5 times normal sea-level pressure (so, don't breathe pure oxygen when scuba-diving).
Other fun facts include that O2 is (as I recall...) paramagnetic, meaning that you can actually watch liquid oxygen held in place by powerful enough magnets. - JonTheGoose, on 04/16/2008, -2/+9Is it worth it? Maybe not, but it does wonders for your e-peen.
- Reno582, on 04/16/2008, -0/+7so you like to buy memory that is marked up $200? I guess you can't cure stupid...
- Holle, on 04/16/2008, -1/+8 I wouldn't pay $70 for a mouse pad, but gaming pads are usually made of a low friction material. This along with the Teflon mouse feet make for some pretty responsive twitch movement. Great for FPS'ers.
I never understood the gaming NIC's. Wouldn't a good router be able to do the same function? - jrizzo, on 04/16/2008, -1/+8I cool my brain with beer.
- PayneX, on 04/16/2008, -0/+7Thanks Morpheus.
- renegadeafk, on 04/16/2008, -0/+6Best buy also charges 80 bucks for like a gig of ram, friggin ridiculous. You can get 4 gigs for that much on newegg.
- luchid, on 04/16/2008, -0/+6"Your math is wrong! Let me use my own!"
He wasn't telling you what to do with your money. He was simply stating a fact: spending money on stuff you don't really need is bad personal economics. - BobMysterioso, on 04/16/2008, -2/+8I just replaced my aging p4 3.0ghz rig with a new AMD gigabyte 690g based motherboard, 5600+ cpu, 2 gig DDR2, sata dvdrom for $280. I chose this motherboard because I needed lots of onboard stuff since my vid card was AGP.
Its not a powerful supercomputer, but its light years ahead of the P4. I think many people buy too much computer. - BlueSkyfish, on 04/16/2008, -0/+6What if we combine all of the mark up buzzwords?
I'll sell you a gaming, wedding, high definition, limited edition, imported, autographed, custom... tea kettle. $3999.99 - Rikkochet, on 04/16/2008, -1/+7If your 386sx does everything you need it to and you're not frustrated by the speed or any compatibility issues, why WOULD you upgrade?
- Ganpachi, on 04/16/2008, -0/+6except that only really is an issue on high clockrates on single and dual cores. By the time you get to quads, you can hit 1:1 with DDR2 800, I mean a Q6600 at 3.2 gHz only needs memory running at 712 mHz. DDR2-800 can take you all the way up to 3.6 at stock. You can see much bigger performance gains from plunking the money into a better cooler, better graphics card, or a better processor or whatever.
- Zaneris, on 04/16/2008, -0/+6This is focused on the speed of the memory, not the size...
- Slovenian6474, on 04/16/2008, -0/+6http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2007/2/19/
I knew I've heard of Gamer Air before... Good ol' PA - matriculated, on 04/16/2008, -0/+6Next: Is dual channel really worth it?
- inactive, on 04/16/2008, -0/+5i just saw you say ***** 3 times in about 300 pixels of space so i though you might be a bit obsessed.
- Holle, on 04/16/2008, -0/+5iKettle would be $5999.99
- LordVance, on 04/16/2008, -0/+5But the difference is that there is a significant performance gain between a 386 and a core2do to justify the cost. The performance gain between an $80 kit and a $300 kit is nearly negligible - it's a product designed simply to take advantage of the "hardcore overclockers who don't actually check benchmarks for their products, they just check prices and go for the most expensive thing they can find" market.
- Matteos, on 04/16/2008, -1/+6Sounds like he has some data corruption, he is probably overclocking.
- gutistg, on 04/16/2008, -0/+5Not flammable, an accelerant.
