- inactive, on 12/08/2007, -0/+9This has been around since 2001. I'm sure by now that this project has furthered or has been scrapped (probably the later). For more information on this project or other Simon Greenwold projects check out http://acg.media.mit.edu/people/simong/

- JudgeMonkey, on 12/08/2007, -1/+2The absolute best way to ensure a group listens to what you say, is to start out by calling them idiots. Totally gets there attention and captivates them.

- kenbiz, on 12/09/2007, -1/+1yes, the 3D interactive technology is awesome
- maryjoyce, on 12/09/2007, -1/+1I agree with Luddite37.
- Nells, on 12/08/2007, -2/+2Would be nice if he had put some time designing 3d objects that actually look like something, instead of little chunks of virtual crap wandering about.
- loganarcher, on 12/09/2007, -1/+1Reminds me of Total Immersions D'Fusion set up. Needs better movement tracking though...
- djphatjive, on 12/08/2007, -1/+1This is so old. The Gizmondo had the ability to do that. And look where that system is now.
- mrrbob, on 12/10/2007, -1/+0I used to set and watch my son play 3D shooter games where he was running through realistic looking 3D worlds constantly for hours on in (this was 3 or 4 yrs ago). I used to muse and think these game programs could easily be the next web browser interface. Web 3.0 anyone?
After all the code for my living room is 20x30x10 That draws the room now we can ad some quick texture for the walls (the wall and floor texture would be tiled just as it is now for most 2D sites) and a few other items such as photos etc on the walls and then the furniture and viola the code for my entire house could be downloaded in a few seconds especially with broadband.
After that you could use the 3D game interface and walk anywhere in my virtual house in real time. Same could go for a store or even a town. Then all you would have to transmit is your virtual coordinates and you could walk through the house and interact with others in 3D just like my son used to when he played online shooter games with people world wide. Makes me wish I could write code so I could work on getting this done.
I think once it got out there and people seen it and tried it it would explode. The game program style interface could be a free download. Cities and malls could put there 3D code up for download by any one who wanted to visit (and shop). As this progressed it could be improved to the point where these 3D worlds would be very real looking. I thought there where some people working on 3d stuff like this years ago. What the hell ever happened to this? Most computers got the graphic juice to run this stuff now so will someone with some big bucks get on this already? Bill gates types are you listening... hello...
### - Luddite37, on 12/08/2007, -1/+0This has a practical application for movie visual effects compositing. Instead of tracking 2d points after a shot is done, stand-in geometry can be pre-visualized on set. Makes my life easier in the future.
- boodog, on 12/08/2007, -1/+0wHERE is the video demonstration?!? that one link is dead
Why in the world write an article on this and not supply a vid demo is whacked! - GeekyGerge, on 12/08/2007, -3/+1Isn't it just a webcam with 3D objects?
- ripple123, on 12/08/2007, -2/+0Thats pretty inane
- and303, on 12/08/2007, -3/+0You know what this would be a really good use for?
No seriously I'm asking. - Perleeeze, on 12/08/2007, -5/+0Are all Digg users idiots?
This is an Augmented Reality app that has some good potential.
If you knew anything about Computer Science, you would recognise this work as important for the future of computing. AR is used heavily by the military and is the technology that will replace your 20th Century display/keyboard/mouse that you are so fond of.
I suggest you have a look at ARToolkit, the BlackMagic Book, Reactable, Microsoft Surface, iPod Touch/iPhone. These have all come out of AR theory.
Peace, I'm outta here...
