That may be the understatement of the week. The full 128-bit bit-shuffle made me ***** bricks. This could _drastically_ speed up thousands of applications that rely on packed instructions, and in combination with the much faster division circuit, should make the CPU wars very, very interesting.
I had been very much under the impression Penryn was to be a reprint of the C2D at 45nm with Nehelem to be the core to bring the next round of real improvement, but with this information it could easily mean Penryn could be every bit as impressive as Conroe. Can't wait to see some benchmarks. - Kaosu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19Flip that statement and you got it. Where were you when intel released core 2 at competitive prices to AMD's seemingly "last-gen" processors? If anything we have the intense Intel-AMD rivalry to thank for Core 2.
The GPU market competitive? Ha, last time I checked, Nvidia and ATI were suspected by the DOJ of price collusion. That is not competition in the least. - pabster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13None, unless you use virtualization. That is the process of running one (or more) operating systems under another operating system. VMWare is the most popular (arguably the best as well, I use it myself) but there are several others, including Microsoft's free VPC.
The current VT implementation isn't particularly impressive from a performance standpoint. Penryn looks to improve significantly in this department. Makes sense, as VM operation is becoming more and more commonplace. - edzieba, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15Don't worry, slocket to the rescue! Kept my old slot1 going far longer than it had any right to.
- geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11"Yes, both of them are guessing."
Actually Intel's official roadmap says "H207", meaning "sometime in the second half of this year", which could mean August (probably the earliest we can expect it) or December (the latest). Considering current Penryn cores are already running Windows (a rather complex bastard to get to run on freshly printed architectures), I'd say we can expect it earlier rather than later. - geronimo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9"you can always take your money to AMD"
When AMD catches up to intel in regards to processing power then I will do exactly that. - ZachS, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Sorry for comment abuse, but here is a link to HardOCP's article. It contains the slides from the Intel Presentation

Maybe. Definitely not the 1.6GHz bus."
Not true, 965/975 chips are already pushing 1.8ghz bus with overclocking. - pabster, on 10/12/2007, -8/+13Bring It On!
Let us hope AMD can compete as well. Otherwise we may not see the Penryn chips at the nice price points Conroe chips are right now. - lotion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5So in other words, if you're looking to build with a core 2 duo (or any other LGA775 processor), buy at least DDR2-800 RAM (assuming your mobo can handle it ... Nvidia 680i boards can) so that you can a) overclock your current core 2 duo and b) use the same RAM when you upgrade to the core 2 successor.
- EvilDr.X, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Sorry, I know this is going to make me sound like a total retard, but can someone define virtualization in this context for me? What benefits would I see from "faster virtualization"?
- ZachPruckowski, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Penryn will be Socket P compatible - that's the new Meroms coming in April or so (Santa Rosa).
- xShad0w, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5If only, too bad that the processor market is so much more complex then the GPU market, they have to deal with power consumption, clock rating, other components, windows architecture, and socket design, and FSB and all that other junk, GPU is just a chip and everything else is usually based around the chip not the other way around
- PATSCRU, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8will these still be compatible with current 975x mobos? LGA775 and all that business? I just bought a bad axe 2, and i'd hate to not be able to get any mileage out of it.
- geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"will these still be compatible with current 975x mobos?"
Maybe. Definitely not the 1.6GHz bus.
"LGA775"
Yes. - lysdexia, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Bigger harder faster better is it? I bet software writers manage to write apps for it that will make your computing experience slower than a herd of tortoise stampeding through peanut butter.
- superal1394, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8time frame on these?
- geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Virtualization in this context means "running of two OSes on the same machine at the same time". VT extensions allow the processor to more easily toggle between two operating systems.
More info here: http://www.intel.com/technology/virtualization/index.htm - mirunit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Really, say all you want but the benchmarks side with Intel on this one. Intel is going 45nm while AMD is stuck at 90nm. That along with the fact that instead of creating a new architecture AMD just keeps re branding the AMD64 chip. Also, the Intel cache is L2 and shared, which is a huge advantage over the AMD alternative.
- shuffle2, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7if only the mainstream processor market was as competitive as the GPU market..... :'(
- geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Already planned to be phased out with Nehelem.
- metalica77, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5wow i can't help but feal sorry for AMD. They realy need to get there heads out of there asses and realize they are getting beat! Bigtime! They need to realease something new, like now, and FAST.
- smb3d, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I'm pretty sure AMD knows they're getting beat, and I hope they can come up with something competitive to keep the prices in check.
- geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"Penryn will be Socket P compatible - that's the new Meroms coming in April or so (Santa Rosa)."
The Desktop versions of Penryn will be LGA775 (but desktop boards may not support the 1.6GHz clock, and probably will require a BIOS flash). Mobile versions will be socket P. [For those who are keeping up, that's 3 generations of processors the LGA775 has survived; Pentium D to Core 2 to "Penryn" (presumably Core 3).] - EvilDr.X, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Thanks
- kayson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3This article missed one of the most exciting parts of the announcement: the Nehalem architecture. Intel is finally adding an integrated memory controller and they're developing an integrated gpu. This combined with the revisions from Penryn could be one hell of a cpu.

- msgyrd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Definately a "wait and see" situation. If I was in the market for a bleeding edge computer, I would probably try to restrain myself from buying until Santa Rosa (the next iteration of centrino) and Penryn are available. The performance from both are supposed to be significantly better that what we currently have (not like core to core 2 transition).

http://jeniya.info - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Not really. What we have to thank for the Core 2 is the Pentium 4. It was so ***** crap that Intel did the unheard of and went back and improved a previous design (Pentium III) and made it fantastic!
- chubbstar, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4so i suppose that means early 2008/late 2007 is a better guess than say LATE 2008 right?

- theclaw1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You know... It's true megahertz no longer matter, but that number has not gone up in over two years. I suppose those Pentium 4 HT models were running FAR too hot to be useful.
- Vigile, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Agreed, Nehalem is far more exciting!

"LGA775"
Yes."
As always Intel will start with the server chips and work it way to the desktop, so the early Penryn chips will be socket 771. - geronimo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1If you have a server that is processing gigabytes of data, that cache doesn't help, NUMA architecture is the only thing that scales nicely in this case. I look forward to the day when Intel adopts such a bus.
- abcdefghij, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@geminitojanus:
can you please state the source to back up the claim abt which socket is for the desktop?
I'm building a new PC (was gonna buy the parts last week but now i'm holding off til may 9). Should I buy mobo with socket P or LGA775?
any good mobo for the SantaRosa available now or very soon? - Cogita, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Awesome. Nothing particular, but still interesting for me.
- Wyzard, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1But will it have an IOMMU?
