- dualaudi, on 05/07/2009, -1/+62Wow. i learned more from comments than the article.
- bonuscalc, on 05/06/2009, -0/+59The 940 was close to double the price of the 920 when I bought my 920 yet the performance benefit is minimal...
- mctom987, on 05/07/2009, -0/+51First of all, Macs are PCs.
Secondly, this has nothing to do with Macs or Windows. - cannarymburns, on 05/07/2009, -0/+32No, they're not rolling anything out, that isn't coming until 2010 with 32nn i7, they're just getting rid of a cpu that apparently doesn't sell. its just one model, not the whole i7 line as some here have seemed to conclude... i don't know about oem demand, but enthusiasts for the most part wanted nothing to do with the 940. my 920 is running 4.1ghz on air, and a 940 wouldn't do any better since its just a higher multi version of the same chip, and all three models top out at pretty much the exact same clock speed range of 3.8-4.2ghz on air. for extreme cooling, the 965 and soon to be released 975 are the way to go, for water or air it is 920, and the 940 is just the odd one out.
- Macintoshreader, on 05/07/2009, -0/+30And third, Macs use Intel processors, not PowerPC, so there's no reason for starting a flame war.
- dengzhi, on 05/07/2009, -1/+26i goto digg just for the comments, not the news stories
- Elemint, on 05/07/2009, -0/+24Umm. i don't mean to burst your bubble but Intels are in mac now too.
- areber04, on 05/06/2009, -8/+32They probably aren't selling since they offer very little improvement over the 920. They might drop the price of the extreme edition, but they have to reason to. AMD isn't coming anywhere close so there's no competition at that level.
- specialK16, on 05/07/2009, -1/+25What the ***** does this has to do with anything.
- Satanael, on 05/07/2009, -0/+23I agree, this is probably the reason. There was far too large of a price gap between 920 and 940 for such a small gain.
- Aurabolt, on 05/07/2009, -3/+23My i7 920 is currently running at 3.0 GHz on stock everything - I'm sure I could go higher, too. There's no reason for the 940.
- inactive, on 05/07/2009, -0/+19As far as I have seen, the 940 merely has a higher clockspeed, but no additional multipliers or cache. Anyone buying an i7 at this point would be a poweruser anyways who is using an enthusiast board that would easily allow overclocking of the 920 to 3ghz on air. What is the point of the 940 then? It would make sense if it had higher overclocking potential and/or it was marginally more expensive, proportionate to the marginal increase in performance.
- Hockey13, on 05/07/2009, -0/+18What are you talking about?
And...
Come on. You can't misspell that word...it's too easy. - DigitalWorld, on 05/07/2009, -1/+18"Final shipments of tray and boxed versions are planned for November 5, 2010 and December 4, 2009."
Am I lost, or have they designed their own version of time there? - m3arvk, on 05/07/2009, -0/+17The i7 is a quad-core chip and the pentium 4 was a single core.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_Core_3
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pentium_4 - KMartSheriff, on 05/07/2009, -0/+16Why are people so obsessed with running that ***** game?
- Sp00k, on 05/07/2009, -0/+15also, imminent.
- Serinus, on 05/07/2009, -1/+16Sometimes...
- Narishma, on 05/07/2009, -0/+14He honestly the whole thing.
- sexybobo, on 05/07/2009, -0/+14They are not phasing out the i7's they are phasing out the 940 because no one is buying it they are all going for the cheap one or the supers expensive one.
- Yarkz, on 05/07/2009, -9/+23AMD and Intel flamewar GO!
- m3arvk, on 05/07/2009, -4/+17Tend to agree with this line of thinking but I'll be buying AMD my next build no matter what.
- hydriplex, on 05/07/2009, -0/+11You honestly what?
- superxero044, on 05/07/2009, -1/+12VERY inaccurate title
- Guspaz, on 05/07/2009, -0/+10Did nobody even do any research here? A quick check to Wikipedia shows exactly why they're phasing this out:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nehalem_(microarchite ...
They're replacing the 940 with the 950. Exactly the same cost, but 3.06GHz instead of 2.93GHz. It will be released on May 31st, along with the 975 (3.33GHz). - failtrain, on 05/07/2009, -2/+11ATI IS BETTERERER THAN NVIDIA!
oh... Sorry wrong flame war. - pshotwell, on 05/07/2009, -1/+10Yes. That makes perfect sense. -.-
- Zomgondo, on 05/07/2009, -2/+11Heh, I'm a longtime Athlon user who was planning on buying an Intel Core Duo for my next upgrade... then Fry's had an offer I couldn't refuse: $99 for an ASUS motherboard and AMD X2 processor. Now that I own it, I've realized a couple of things:
1. The speed of individual cores hasn't really improved that much since I bought my last CPU in 2002. I've got a few of single-threaded programs I've coded and optimized the hell out of, and they run maybe 20% faster. It's not like the old days where waiting 5 years would get you a core that was 3-4x faster.
2. Having more than one core is really nice.
Therefore, in the future I'll probably be buying whoever can give me the number of cores I need (2 works fine for me atm) for the best price rather than who can give me the FASTEST PROCESSOR ON THE PLANET!!!!111omg.... which probably means AMD. - spazzm2008, on 05/07/2009, -0/+9Yep. Just before the singularity Intel will be launching a new line of processors every hour.
- idarkiswordi, on 05/07/2009, -0/+9Mac Genus indeed...
- apamize, on 05/07/2009, -2/+11Because they want to answer "Yes" when asked "Can it run Crysis?".
- ratherstupid, on 05/07/2009, -0/+9I'm running at 3.5GHZ on air with my 920. Current temps are 41*C on stock cooling. It was almost too easy.
- mikedoth, on 05/07/2009, -1/+10Ditto.
- inactive, on 05/07/2009, -0/+8I am on a 920 also w/ some upgraded cooling running at 3.6 no problems. Benchmarked it vs. my friends 940 and mine was a bit faster on the pi calculation
- Dougman82, on 05/07/2009, -1/+9How come?
- SquareWheel, on 05/07/2009, -1/+9I honestly people would stop suggest that Macs aren't PCs.
- ben72227, on 05/07/2009, -0/+7Probably because there was too much overlap with the 920; and since the 920 is a lot cheaper than the 940 (and without much of a loss in performance) I'd bet the 920 was probably cannibalizing sales of the 940 anyhow since all of that silicon could have been used to make more 920s. No point in having a redundant product like the 940 when they can put all of the efforts into the 920 and the Extreme $1000 version (I forget what it's called).
- hairyback, on 05/07/2009, -0/+7What the hell read up on what the i7 is before you comment!
The old P4's are nothing compared to the i7. - Yage2006, on 05/07/2009, -2/+9Good maybe they will bring out something affordable next.
- inactive, on 05/07/2009, -0/+6@Yage
Product life cycle - read up on it.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Product_life_cycle_ma ... - inactive, on 05/07/2009, -0/+6Not only is it QuadCore (take it how you will) it is also HyperThreaded. Shows up as 8 proc if you so wish to enable HT.
- scoottie, on 05/07/2009, -0/+6Good bring out the 2nd gen so i can buy one
- Noncentz, on 05/08/2009, -0/+6On Air = Lotsa Fans
- Hortinstein, on 05/07/2009, -0/+5what cooler you running...I am getting the 920, and was thinking about getting a V8 cooler
- kvgirard, on 05/07/2009, -1/+6progress
- Yage2006, on 05/07/2009, -0/+5Well I just find 500+ too much for only the cpu. The quad i have cost me like 280$ at the time. But If you need the newest fastest dont care about the cost then have at it :)
- superxero044, on 05/07/2009, -0/+4v8 is the way to go man. its expensive and maybe you can get similar results for cheaper, but my friend got one and we got it up to 3.8 ghz. read up about it though. its not SUPER easy to OC the 920. You can get it to 3.33 piece of cake but getting it past that is a lot of work. and make sure you test it with prime95 b/c it can seem stable until you're under load.
- Tenoq, on 05/07/2009, -0/+4Me three. Integrated graphics options are better (generally) on AMD, particularly for a HTPC. Bang-for-buck they're a lot better too, at least in low to mid-range.
- Aurabolt, on 05/07/2009, -0/+4This is my first desktop. I upgraded from a 1.8GHz dual core laptop...
- m3arvk, on 05/07/2009, -2/+6@Dougman82
For my part I think competition is good and I think AMD is a great company. For those reasons I will be giving my $ to AMD until they get back on their feet - that and I simply don't do anything which requires ultra-elite CPUs. -
