- Niddik, on 10/10/2007, -8/+60They've gone down in price? That's wonderful! I still can't afford them, though...
- redrock34, on 10/10/2007, -4/+43AMD has recently been getting their asses kicked by Intel. I thought AMD would have laid Intel to rest a long time ago in the PC market, but Intel rose to the occasion.
- OBKenobi, on 10/10/2007, -7/+46AMD is getting raped.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+29Q6600 is supposed to be $266, not $300.
- VeganG, on 10/10/2007, -1/+22I would feel like the biggest idiot if I bought a $1,000 CPU. I'd buy a PS3 before doing that, and that's saying a lot.
- grumpyrain, on 10/10/2007, -0/+20Welcome to buying technology.
- nirav72, on 10/10/2007, -3/+23*****!!!!!!!!!...I just bought a E6700 two weeks ago...Now the Q6600 are almost the same price! I should've waited!
- nirav72, on 10/10/2007, -1/+17Yeah but the Pentium 4s run a lot hotter than the core 2 duos. And also..gigahertz is a marketing gimmick and is not always relevant. Go read up on modern CPU architectures.
- Stephenishere, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15well given intels research department, fabs, and their amount of money, i always saw intel coming and biting AMD's ass for making them look bad in the p4 era..
- aznhomig, on 10/10/2007, -4/+19I'll stick with the Dual Core for now, no real reason to get Quad unless you're the epitome of multi-tasking efficiency.
- Elranzer, on 10/10/2007, -8/+22If you're running open-source software, it does. Linux really flies on multi-processor systems, since you don't have to wait for the bureaucrats at Adobe or Microsoft to release MP versions of their executables.
- mikeon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14Yes I really hate how when I open up a digg page, everything on the browser freezes for a few seconds. I have show all comments on, is that the same with you?
- HonoredMule, on 10/10/2007, -3/+16I can't wait for Firefox to do some decent threading. IMHO, there should be a dedicated thread per open tab. At the very least, I shouldn't have the whole UI freeze up every time I load a digg page (the only place that happens, BTW).
- Reziarfg, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13You'd be surprised as to how cool the latest Quad Core processors from Intel run.
- Phyltre, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12Assuming you have a local Frys.
- stoanhart, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12So true. There are really no circumstances where it makes sense. Hard-core gamer? That $1000 bough you an extra 3% performance, congratulations! Got a lot of data to crunch? Buy several $200 CPU's - more bang for your buck.
- Shadow503, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10If you're anything like me you'd need an 8 core processor for that.
- PATSCRU, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10nirav,
I know it sucks ass, but to be quite honest, news of the cuts was leaked more than a month ago. However, there will always be price cuts, and when buying components, as time passes you will feel more and more screwed. - SammyJr, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Meh. If you run more than one app at once, you'll benefit greatly from multicore. It doesn't matter if you are running Linux or Windows.
- kaffein, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Wtf... The q6600 has been 300$ for about 2 weeks on newegg, I go and check now and it's $375!?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115017 - skarps, on 10/10/2007, -12/+20Those are some great price points, however personally I just can't justify upgrading from a dual core to a quad core since not much home software out there makes use of the multiple cores.
- renegadeafk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6I have a 3.0 Ghz pentium 4 with HT, gues what? IT SUCKS BALLS
- RocketGib, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6These chip prices will come down to less than $200 in about 6-8 months... then I might consider.
- axle, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Your applications don't have to all be multithreaded to take advantage of multiple cores.
Let's say you're concurrently running about 10 applications. Some of them may be idle, but let's assume that 6 are concurrently doing work.
That means all 4 cores will be utilized (as long as your OS is properly scheduling things), and your overall throughput will be better than if you had a dual core machine. - blanktarget, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Everyone is saying smart people don't get quad because there is no need. Obviously none of you heard of a little program called 3d Studio Max. These programs get a HUGE boost from dual or quad cores. When rendering with certain render engines you get one bucket per cpu. So getting done in half the time in a 10hr + render on a dual core is a huge leap.
- Disfnord, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Adults can make minimum wage, too, *****.
- init100, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4You must enjoy wasting your money. :p
- gdavidp, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5NCIX has the Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Quad Core selling for $313.00 CAN so Newegg.com is obviously price gouging:
http://ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=22211&vpn=BX80562Q6600&manufacture=Intel - init100, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4In the P4 era, Intel surely deserved it.
- GliTCH82, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I found that while IE and Firefox freeze while opening Digg pages, Opera doesn't. It runs sluggish but it won't lock up the whole browser no matter what it's doing in any of the tabs. Having said that, I still came back to Firefox though.
- knightblade2oo4, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6the good thing to come out of all this is that C2D chips are going to be cheaper.
- wafflez, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3That's not the msrp, that's how much it costs if you bought 1000 of them (wholesale/bulk pricing). Obviously, the retailers took their opportunity to make profit and raised the prices a bit. I got a Q6600 for $273 at mwave and I'm not too frustrated over the $7 difference.
- Markers, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5TigerDirect.com has them for $289.00. Now I just need to convince my wife that replacing my e6420 will give me the much needed boost in performance and decrease the amount of time I spend on the computer playing video games, which will allow me to spend more time with her. It's a Win Win situation.
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2643933&CatId=2758 - thatbox, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3You may want to check out this thread on AnandTech, which is an extremely comprehensive list and comparison of motherboards with recommendations: ( http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.aspx?catid=29&threadid=2067695&enterthread=y )
Then take a look at this article to help you decide on a CPU at your budget: ( http://anandtech.com/printarticle.aspx?i=3038 )
I've got these links handy because I was doing some research for myself, yesterday. nVidia really doesn't seem to have much for the budget builder right now, but since you were looking to stay ATI you probably don't mind. The X1950 might be your best bang for your buck, since there aren't any DX10 cards for guys like us yet (nVidia's 8600 is rubbish, supposedly), and it's a solid DX9 card from last gen. I'd suggest a separate PCI capture card, personally - try looking at Hauppage's lineup. Good luck! - BZKyle, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Sigh... I *just* bought one like 4 days ago. Dammit.
- Hangender, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3OMG, Must buy....must
- UtopiaInTheSky, on 10/10/2007, -0/+32 weeks? I check NewEgg daily. It was $300 for barely one day.
- Thud, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4In stock at zipzoomfly.com for $295 (retail box)... free shipping... I love newegg but their price gouging here is somewhat disconcerting.
- Shadow503, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Get it off zipzoomfly for under $300 w/ free shipping:
http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=80864&prodlist=pricegrabber - TonyCubed, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3The only reason why games take a hit on Quad cores are because they aren't properly designed for multiple cores, not just quad cores, this involves dual cores as well. Games like Supreme Commander would take advantage of this since they were designed to be multi-threading because of the scale of the game.
- kf_man, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Haha, I'm pretty sure the nearest Fry's is at least 500 miles away from my house in Upstate NY. The local stores (Best Buy, Circuit City, and CompUSA) aren't even worth considering at their prices...
That said, I'm a little disappointed in Newegg for playing these price games, but luckily I don't plan to buy until around the end of the year anyway. Hopefully holiday deals and a few months will help get things under control. - Daiken, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2...If you're building a brand new PC with just $600, forget the Q6600. There goes half your budget. If you're just looking for a new mobo and processor, then ya Q6600 might be fine. What parts are you looking to buy? Do you want to overclock?
- Massif, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Tigerdirect seems to be hanging on to the old prices as long as they can. The Q6600 is still $499 there. I think I might try out NCIX.
- deacont23, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Supreme commander uses quad core. Crysis will also be using quad core when its released. And probably more on the way
- init100, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Actually, gamers might rather want the E6850 instead, since it runs at a higher clock frequency (3.0 GHz) at about the same price as the Q6600. At least while most games are still singlethreaded.
- domlachowicz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2FYI: 50% is 100% of 1 core. The Javascript code isn't MT aware.
- Diorhomme, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Mwave.com sells them for $275 when newegg charges $375 (20 to 1pm July 24th)
http://www.mwave.com/mwave/viewspec.hmx?scriteria=MB-BA23383&RSKU=MB-BA23383 - mattcoady, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2God damnit, I just bought the 6600
- shiftt, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2People still shop at Tigerdirect? That company has had more investigations than enron and worldcom combined.
- titlesaysitall, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2BUYER BEWARE, DID NOT PAY AND LEFT ME HANGING, NO RESPONSE!!!! F---------
