- jessechan, on 07/11/2008, -5/+28Seems slightly amusing that the Intel Centrino 2 Platform works with Nvidia and AMD/ATI based graphics chips before Intel's own. What is going on with Intel's internals? Do we just chalk this up to be poor execution and communication between divisions? Intel has great technology right now, but they really need to simplify their product-line to be more efficient and better integrated between their products.
- elstevo, on 07/12/2008, -0/+13Any idea on when this platform will be used in actual laptops? Monday? or is it just being released to manufacturers on Monday? i.e. when can I buy one?
- InorganicMatter, on 07/12/2008, -4/+15Centrino has always supported other graphics chips. My laptop right now is running Centrino Duo with an NVIDIA Quadro. Stop trying to read between the lines. All that's happened is their new mobile graphics chips (which you have to admit are finally getting better) got delayed a bit.
- antileet, on 07/12/2008, -3/+14Good, Intel integrated graphics ***** suck.
- shadoweva09, on 07/11/2008, -3/+13Judging by their previous attempts, they shouldn't release an integrated graphics chip at all. (How much more OpenGL have they cut out of this new one? How many cheap BIOS hacks are there to get the resolution up? etc...)
- ExRe, on 07/12/2008, -2/+11Intel integrated graphics are perfectly fine for 90%+ users.
I've noticed people say Intel's graphics are so bad that they won't run Aero, but that is completely false. My laptop from 1 1/2 years ago with integrated Intel graphics can run Aero perfectly fine (GMA 950). I can also play games like Sim City, The Sims, etc at low-medium settings at 1680x1050. - mohsenxp, on 07/12/2008, -1/+9What's the front page doing scattered with tech related stories!? This could pass off as being digg.com
- MindTrigger, on 07/12/2008, -0/+7Your laptop was old tech before it reached retail outlets the first time.
- DigitAl56K, on 07/12/2008, -0/+7Intel integrated graphics may suck in terms of performance, but they win in terms of battery life.
Putting an nVidia chip in a laptop will kill the run time when it's off AC power, even when the laptop is idling. Unless you're a gamer battery life can be more important than how snappy DirectX is. - metalica77, on 07/12/2008, -0/+5Are there any notebooks that are coming out immediately because i want to get something.
- dagamer34, on 07/12/2008, -0/+4Sometime in August is likely. That's when they like to have hardware updates, since September is usually all about their iPod line.
- Harmatia, on 07/12/2008, -0/+3There was a badass Asus notebook on newegg but it got pulled. t9400 processor (2.54, 6MB cache), 9600 GS videocard...
- ExRe, on 07/12/2008, -0/+3Yes, SC4 and The Sims 2.
It has more than enough power for the kind of games that appeal to the masses, just not enough for recent FPS's at my native resolution. - waydee, on 07/12/2008, -0/+3Yeah I'm happy with the 950 but thats because I stopped gaming in about 2000 and on the odd occasion I feel like a bit of nostalgia all my games run just great. I'm sure it's next to useless for all these new fangled games the kids are into.
- Mahoney07, on 07/12/2008, -1/+4The Sims is over 8 years old. grats on running it.
- fmorel90, on 07/12/2008, -0/+3He probably means SimCity 4 or Societies and Sims 2.
- miga, on 07/12/2008, -0/+2Hopefully the Dell E Series will come out (E5500 / E6000) quickly!
- CrossedBearings, on 07/12/2008, -0/+2Two comments
[1] This CPU has been long awaited for by Macbook Pro users for the new MBP release. The date of the release has been impacted by the delay for montevina.
[2] MBP's defintely DO care about speed
QED. - Fergy, on 07/13/2008, -0/+1The current set and even the new set(X4500) are weak as hell. They aren't fast enough for simple games and don't support video acceleration. This makes these integrated graphics good for Aero and Google Earth but NOTHING ELSE.
- ath1337, on 07/12/2008, -0/+1I'm waiting for the montevina macbooks to come out for school in september. Hopefully they will also use the LED backlight screens.
- KingFog, on 07/12/2008, -0/+1snigger is a word, it's not racist... Drop the s and it does become racist.
snigger is similar to a giggle and a snicker mixed together... - atbnet, on 07/12/2008, -0/+1Sony might be the first to offer it.
http://www.engadget.com/2008/07/12/sony-teaser-poi ... - yacks, on 07/13/2008, -0/+1I saw a Sony FW at my work... looks pretty nice.. Wonder how the 16.4" screen looks turned on though.. It's shorter but wider than a normal widescreen.
- inactive, on 07/12/2008, -2/+3Yes I agree, integrated graphics are useless unless you're going for a budget PC. This upgrade means a new Apple Macbook Pro is imminent. I really need a new computer upgrade.
- TheGuruStud, on 07/12/2008, -1/+2***** can run?
- joshualamgroup, on 07/13/2008, -0/+1no way. only macbooks have integrated graphics.
mbp always have a discrete graphics card. - hiro, on 07/12/2008, -0/+1What the hell does "snicker" mean?
- Elranzer, on 07/14/2008, -0/+1Too weak for "simple games" but powerful enough for Blu-Ray playback, eh?
- Elranzer, on 07/13/2008, -0/+1Centrino has never been about the graphics chips. It was always a trifecta of the Intel CPU, Intel Motherboard Chipset and Intel WiFi card.
Many Centrino laptops have an Intel graphics card yes, but this is only because many Intel motherboards come with it. There's plenty of non-Intel graphic cards in Centrino laptops.
Centrino has always been pretty good for Linux laptop users, as Intel has always been pretty good about hardware specs and open drivers. Many Linux users prefer Turion, but there's no guarantee there's not a Broadcom or Atheros card that doesn't have a functional driver for Linux that ay. - Elranzer, on 07/13/2008, -0/+1Intel's current set of integrated graphics are not *that* bad, like the X1300 series and above. They fully support Aero and WDDM in Vista, and are completely supported in Linux (which is more than one could say about the *other" two graphics manufacturers, and I don't mean Matrox).
- Elranzer, on 07/13/2008, -0/+1There are more Intel-based laptops than MacBook. The Dell Latitudes smoke the MacBooks in sales.
- yacks, on 07/13/2008, -0/+1well some people were I work were able to buy them early.. lol They are in the stores already.. We had some for 2 weeks.. sold a few until we pulled them off our displays. There is a new Sony coming out with a 16.4" screen.. shorter but wider..
- Fergy, on 07/13/2008, -1/+1Recent FPS's like Far Cry.
- inactive, on 07/12/2008, -0/+0A prize for anyone who figures out the relevance to the word 'marathon'
- bretjohnson, on 07/12/2008, -2/+1that makes sense, i just hope they keep that back to school promotion going because i need a new one for college.
- AngelBunny, on 07/12/2008, -4/+1I could be wrong about this but I think apple is going to jump on bored with this in the near future. Apple has stated that they plan for their next gen comp to support WiMAX. I was skeptical but now I see why.
- bretjohnson, on 07/12/2008, -4/+1how imminent do you think the macbookpro refresh will be, and i'm guessing it won't have integrated graphics card right?
- SirZRX, on 07/12/2008, -4/+1great i just bougth a new laptop and now it has old tech!
- panuta, on 07/12/2008, -9/+4APPLE MACBOOK PRO!!!
- aserer511, on 07/12/2008, -9/+4There's really not much need to dump, IMO, massive amounts of R&D into mobile platforms. Mobile users don't expect BLAZING fast speed. They want a usable machine that sips battery life, so any and all R&D shouldn't necccessarily be focused on getting a chip with 25% more benchmark power using current power, but a chip with current power using 25% less energy. Those who need a dekstop-power notebook are using desktop C2D/C2X based systems, and don't care nearly as much about battery life
- Jeremyz0r, on 07/12/2008, -10/+2Off Topic:
In the article comments someone said "*snigger*", were they being racist or did they mean "snicker"? Erm.
Ps. Intel integrated graphics are the boons.
