NOTHING CAN - bencefeher, on 04/11/2008, -4/+57...playing crysis :(
- h4mx0r, on 04/11/2008, -5/+42WHERE IS YOUR GOD NOW?
- S1ngular1ty1, on 04/11/2008, -3/+31Only 5 billion ?
- 3nnRG, on 04/11/2008, -1/+27Turns out the new proccessor runs 8 Cores at 5Ghz and each core has 4MB dedicated L2 Cache with 32MB shared L3 Cache.
- bluestripes0, on 04/11/2008, -0/+20is that ***** reptar
- mrsteveman1, on 04/11/2008, -1/+21Because its about IBM......
- nickzee, on 04/11/2008, -5/+24Where is my POWERBOOK G5
- inactive, on 04/11/2008, -1/+20Now Christ comes to us on a computer chip, instead of a potato chip.
- inactive, on 04/11/2008, -3/+18Next time just say first
- metateck, on 04/11/2008, -0/+13For every IBM chip you don't buy, I'm going to buy 3.
- cowsgonemadd3, on 04/11/2008, -7/+19Will it blend?
- DAllenJ, on 04/11/2008, -0/+12Not a bit. When Apple made the switch, nobody was arguing that the PowerPC was a bad chip. The problem for Apple was heat. IBM never offered them a G5 that ran cool enough for use in a laptop. Even their "low power" variant ran too hot. Apple's choice was this: Switch to x86 or stop making laptops.
Given the bulk of Macs sold are Macbooks, this was not a difficult choice. - rizzo2008, on 04/11/2008, -1/+12No it uses the POWER architecture which means it uses a completely different instruction set than an x86 architecture chip from AMD or Intel.
- wkcrazyhorse, on 04/11/2008, -1/+12...for a completely different market.
- Harabeck, on 04/11/2008, -2/+13woosh
- jamend, on 04/11/2008, -0/+11I don't understand all those numbers. What's that in lengths of index fingers travelled by light per ticket agent check-in?
- KloroFormd, on 04/11/2008, -2/+13That's not competition for Intel, it's a completely different architecture.
- avalys, on 04/11/2008, -2/+12For Christ's sake. No one who was involved in that is even still alive, much less still working at IBM. You might as well boycott all products made in Germany, too - modern Germany has the same connection with Nazi-era Germany as today's IBM has with Nazi-era IBM (they're both institutions that existed then, participated in Naziism, and still exist today). Your position is absurd.
- FelixdaaHack, on 04/11/2008, -1/+11It would be great if IBM had a major comeback in the personal computer business
- dvinnen, on 04/11/2008, -1/+10You have no idea how CPUs work do you
- MoofTheStoof, on 04/11/2008, -0/+8I always liked the PowerPC architecture (I'm still using my G5, as I type this), but the move to intel wasn't about power, it was about conformity - and it still was the right move. IBM was wanting to make server and embedded chips and not waste time trying to make a PC chip so they let the PowerPC feature set and processor speed lag. NeXTSTEP runs on fricken' anything, so Steve and Apple decided to move to intel because intel is the only chip maker still making chips primarily for personal computing and with the CoreDUOs they were finally starting to make good ones. Perhaps not as awesome as what POWER could become, but still more than good enough for Apple's purposes (and better than where PowerPC was stuck at). Now Apple doesn't have to worry about playing catch-up with other PC makers when it comes to processors.
- inactive, on 04/11/2008, -0/+8Linux can run on PPC.
- jellygraph, on 04/11/2008, -1/+9oh shut the ***** up
- sowdog, on 04/11/2008, -2/+9Absolutely nothing
uh huh
War huh yeah - rizzo2008, on 04/11/2008, -1/+8Um apple actually made a few prototypes but they kept blowing up since they produced so much heat. This single handedly made them switch to Intel since although the PowerPC chips from IBM are fantastic for desktops with tons of computing power they can't be sized down enough with their power consumption and heat to fit well in a laptop
- Mrdudeperson, on 04/11/2008, -1/+8Well isn't it?
- dimplemonkey, on 04/11/2008, -1/+8So this was the Powermac G6 that Uncle Steve and Apple got tired of waiting for?
- xxpor, on 04/11/2008, -0/+7Dugg for
"IBM has created water-cooling systems akin to the radiators in cars to keep its processors from overheating. Not doing so, Meyerson quipped, "results in setting fire to the user, which is bad."" - mrsteveman1, on 04/11/2008, -0/+6The dual G5 is way too hot as well, its liquid cooled for a reason
- AdHaR, on 04/11/2008, -2/+8thats OVER 9000!
- Slade605, on 04/11/2008, -1/+7REPTAR!
- inactive, on 04/11/2008, -0/+6Better not use: PS3, Xbox360, DRAM, Magnetic Storage, RISC chips (like GPUs). All using IBM technology.
- DOTQWERTY218, on 04/11/2008, -0/+5ditto
- Miflim, on 04/11/2008, -0/+5"I think there is a world market for maybe five computers." --Thomas Watson, chairman of IBM, 1943.
They've gone a long way - cornelje, on 04/11/2008, -0/+5My favorite part about digg is that I can go through the comments, think in my head of what I'd say to it, then see the next reply and ITS THE EXACT SAME THING.
- inactive, on 04/11/2008, -3/+8om nom nom nom nom.. nom?
- BradHAWK, on 04/11/2008, -0/+5You're saying X86 is a more elegant architecture than Power?
BTW, Apple computers all have Intel processors. - jellygraph, on 04/11/2008, -0/+5Wrong... The Power6 chips is a distinctly different RISC based chip.
Read up about it before sharing your thoughts, thank you
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/POWER6 - krustytroll, on 04/11/2008, -0/+4how many giga watts?
- dsmx, on 04/11/2008, -0/+4Cell uses a stripped down power PC core to direct spe's in tasks, so yes and no is the answer.
- Rocketmac, on 04/11/2008, -1/+5I remember hearing about the Power6 project for AIX 5.4 and using DS8300 storage for a demo shop.
I knew it would be hot, but still needs refinement. With that said, the architecture of the power6 chip, bus redesign and hardware metamorphosis; it will be hard for SUN to beat for enterprise-strength pure processing power. This statement could also be biased as I feel that AIX is a more stable and versatile OS compared to Solaris. - RungeKutta, on 04/11/2008, -0/+4So, do you think that (maybe) 50 hours of personal enjoyment is more important than not giving money to a company that helped commit genocide?
- mrsteveman1, on 04/11/2008, -1/+5Probably not, if the AIM people can't make enough good chips to supply Apple with what they need, what the hell does it matter how fast IBMs chips are?
Speed isn't everything - Demq, on 04/11/2008, -2/+6who are they exactly shipping to??
- thexder, on 04/11/2008, -2/+6PowerMac G6? ~sniff~ :(
- turpenine, on 04/11/2008, -4/+8apple went to intel for their mobile processors.
- S1ngular1ty1, on 04/11/2008, -0/+4You know there are more markets that just ***** overpriced PCs.
- craterburnsu, on 04/11/2008, -1/+5My hope for the power6 is that we some some more Linux optimizations that might trickle down to the Ps3 compatible distributions. It'd be nice to have a reason to install Linux on the cell, because right now it doesn't run any better than a standard PC would.
