- DreadPirate, on 08/22/2008, -4/+168And the NY times is *just* discovering FiOS? Bit slow off the mark there, guys.
- whoreable, on 08/22/2008, -4/+76“If my computer’s down and I can’t use the Internet, I sleep,” he says. “I do not have motivation to be alive that day.”
Same here, but I would never admit it. Damn, I just did. Man I'm high. - MondoPest, on 08/22/2008, -3/+40Major media is always slow on the uptake of new technology.
- Pusod, on 08/23/2008, -2/+38F.I.O.S.will not survive if Verizon monopolizes on the technology.
- WaveRunningNakd, on 08/23/2008, -2/+38welcome to everyone's favorite game, pick a comment.
(1) welcome to 2005. buried.
(2) who cares, since fios is barely available anywhere. buried.
(3) even with fios, we're still slower than other countries. buried.
(4) advertisement pretending to be a story. buried. - simplyintricate, on 08/23/2008, -0/+23Agreed. We need to get rid of these monopoly granting zoning laws.
- Twan2649, on 08/23/2008, -2/+24I want to travel a million MILES a minute.
- mikephimikephi, on 08/23/2008, -1/+23I hate these paid for 'articles'.
They really should put a disclaimer that the article is actually an advertisement, like they do in Time Magazine.
Verizon has been rolling out FiOS in Brooklyn for a while now, and I believe they are going to cover Manhattan at a rapid pace since they recently got permission to do so. This is merely an advertisement disguised as a news story. - paradisetonight, on 08/23/2008, -3/+22its okay, ur whoreable
- BeefBaron, on 08/23/2008, -1/+15Sure, if you want to liquefy your bones.
- StolenLamp, on 08/23/2008, -0/+13Wow, don't I feel futuristic, I've had FiOS for quite a while...
- gcnaddict, on 08/23/2008, -0/+13I feel more futuristic :D. I was one of the guinea pigs in DC to get to grab a 30/5 fiber line for 45 dollars a month. Dirt cheap at the time, and still great seeing as to how the speeds never dipped.
FIOS has been around since around or before 2004 though. Where has this writer been? - paradisetonight, on 08/23/2008, -1/+14after recently discovering fios, the author screamed "getoffmylawn" mistaking verizon service techs for teenagers
- Chebsi, on 08/23/2008, -1/+13Don't blame them, they're still on dial-up.
- BradHAWK, on 08/23/2008, -0/+12Dial up? They still use dead trees as a distribution medium.
- VicHislop, on 08/23/2008, -1/+11Technology and newspapers don't mix well.
- ChromaVita, on 08/23/2008, -0/+9Except for that whole speed of light thing...
- AresDiggs, on 08/23/2008, -0/+9A coffee shop? how many other people are on that because that might explain why you don't see a difference... and have you ever tried to upload a big file over cable its ***** pathetic
- sinembarg0, on 08/23/2008, -0/+9No problem with traveling 9 quadrillion miles per second, that still won't liquefy your bones. It's the acceleration that does it, not the speed.
- kodek, on 08/23/2008, -0/+9Not if you slowly accelerate up to that speed.
- mojoe1185, on 08/23/2008, -0/+8Don't we all?
- bjornski, on 08/23/2008, -0/+8So while surfing the web and watching YouTube, you don't notice.
But for files, it's a completely different story.
Do you realize the error in your statement? - randall814, on 08/23/2008, -0/+8Buried for recommending McAfee and Norton.
- Strokemouth, on 08/23/2008, -0/+6They didn't block usenet, they stopped providing access to anything but the Big 6, much like other ISP's have been doing. Their servers had ***** completion/retention anyways.
- vat0r, on 08/23/2008, -0/+5Must be nice. I'll either have to move or wait till I'm about 50 before it comes this far north.
- IndigoMoss, on 08/23/2008, -0/+5Since when has advertisements been front-page worthy? Does every digger already know about Fios? This is more of an article for something like Homes and Gardens, not a very tech-centric, social news network.
- MalDON, on 08/23/2008, -4/+9The fact that people are digging this up scares me. I do not welcome our new young youtube comment-making overlords.
- Morphine1680, on 08/23/2008, -1/+6Meh, still not available in my area, I guess my optimum online 30/5 Mbps will have to do for now
- Strokemouth, on 08/23/2008, -0/+4See my comment a few lines up regarding usenet. My parents pay less for fios + directv than I pay for a triple play with time warner, so I don't see it being that "absorbent."
(btw, the word is exorbitant) - metkillerjoe, on 08/23/2008, -0/+4FiOS is a service that has been going for at least 3 years. How did this end up on the front page. It's almost like talking about Halo 3's "brand spanking new" engine at this point.
- antdude, on 08/23/2008, -0/+3Same here and I am in Verizon area! I can't even get DSL (20K ft.).
- solid12345, on 08/23/2008, -0/+3If you built the technology you own it. AT&T had a monopoly for years because they practically built up the whole infrastructure themselves. When the government broke it off, basically all they did was literally steal AT&T's backbone and divest THEIR lines into other "baby bell" company's hands.
This should be considered more unethical than a monopoly. - Lancelot9201, on 08/23/2008, -1/+4Other nations have broadband that's even faster but cost 1/2 what Verizon demands. A recent newpaper article reported that verizon was surprised that fios wasn't drawing subscribers at the rate they had hoped for. They wouldn't admit that $60 per month was just to steep..Talk about greed at its worse..!!! Plus, their advertisements would make you think that these kind of rates are a bargain..
- grimward, on 08/23/2008, -0/+3Ah, I'm still so very happy about my 100/100Mbit connection that costs me 40€ a month, and I just wish that everyone else out there in the world had companies that invested into infrastructure like we Swedes have :/
- firebirdx01, on 08/23/2008, -0/+3I had FiOS in NY at my parents house and its pretty insane. I've gotten 1.2 -1.5 MBytes/s using BT and can easily upload within the 750 KBytes/s range.
- bjornski, on 08/23/2008, -0/+3@vat0r
Exactly, me too. My neighborhood isn't covered yet. I'm pissed.
I want a choice other than Comcast. (AT&T DSL doesn't cut it) - icepick314, on 08/23/2008, -0/+3i laugh at your FIOS with my 100mbps fiber optic DSL from NTT in Japan!!!!
- andrewlotta, on 08/23/2008, -0/+2Umm...Verizon Fios was just recently added in NYC.
- CryoNine, on 08/23/2008, -0/+2No offense intended, but fiber-to-home and fiber-up-to-a-mile-away-into-a-junction-box-split-off-and-shared-between-multiple-homes isn't similar, it's what separates FiOS from cable providers and makes it a superior service.
- Novion76, on 08/23/2008, -0/+2Have FiOS in Sarasota, FL (or rather they sort of forced it on us, but oh well). For some speed reference, the last time I was at home I hit torrent speeds of 780kb/s download on bittorrent (TPB, olympic opening ceremony) and uploads of 400+kb/s. Pretty impressive stuff.
- clintv, on 08/23/2008, -0/+2I am a FiOS customer in Texas and upload 300-400GB/month. You get the bandwidth you pay for and they don't appear to throttle torrent traffic. Does anyone have FiOS in a market where there are no other broadband or cable providers? How is your service?
- brundlefly76, on 08/24/2008, -0/+2Yeah it is new to Manhattan which is why they are revealing it as 'new' - it is new to Manhattanites and most are unaware of what FiOs its advantages.
I have 25 Mbps FiOs for a couple of years now (just recently upgraded to symmetrical). Absolutely the fastest, most stable broadband I have ever had. Have never had to call tech support, very full-featured wireless router. Speeds do not fluctuate.
Only problem I had is that the DNS servers are god-awful slow (easily fixed), and you really need to use a multiconnection download manager in order to saturate the 'long fat pipe':
http://www.stationstops.com/2008/04/16/high-speed- ... - caffeinelover, on 08/23/2008, -1/+3So did this site's users, judging from the Diggs this is getting
- esandrews, on 08/23/2008, -0/+2Quest in arizona has this service available as well. soon it will all be fiber optic just like 56k went out.
- bjornski, on 08/23/2008, -0/+230/5? I'd LOVE that!
We're on the "middle tier" atm, which gives us 12/2. (lucky to ever see 1 up. VERY lucky, and I average about 5 down)
I guess we could go up to 20/4, but it's over $100 a month for that alone. On top of the other "awesome deal on cable" that it's bundled with (***** cable reception I've EVER had in my life. TimeWarner/Roadrunner blew them away!) - bejayel, on 08/23/2008, -3/+5Fiber to the home is not monopolized at all. It is called "Destroying the Copper Loop". Some major companies in Canada are also working on offering similar services. Sasktel, who has more dark fiber than anyone, and one of the longest fiber optic networks in the world, has been discussing this for years before FiOS was concieved. They are just trying to bring it to all of saskatchewan at once instead of just pieces.
Also, other companies will most likely not start your house on fire when atempting to bring fiber to the home.http://techdirt.com/articles/20070906/113055.shtml
Then you must consider that you are still on a copper loop in your house (most people anyway). So you are still going to be limited by the speeds of copper over light. And dont forget the ***** modem/router combination they provide. Those things are absolute pieces of *****. - Strokemouth, on 08/23/2008, -0/+2Geez, what's with all the people complaining about them only offering access to the big 6 on usenet?? Did anyone actually use their servers for binaries??
If you were using the verizon.net news servers, you were doing it wrong. Get a real usenet provider.
And bury this lame article, there is no interesting/new info at all. - LucasJ218, on 08/23/2008, -0/+1I wish I could choose ***** cable/dsl over what I have...
How ridiculous is my "isp'?? http://jtt.net/internet.php - bjornski, on 08/23/2008, -1/+2My copper wire in my cables lets me transfer at 1GB between my machines.
I think I can live with the copper "limitations", considering the ISP would never provide anything NEAR those speeds to begin with. My home network will always be faster than the service they'll bring me. - CryoNine, on 08/23/2008, -0/+1They did block some newsgroups. They did it because it's the cesspool of the internet when it comes to child pornography. I don't support child pornography by any means, but the whole "blocking for the betterment of society" thing concerns me because it basically treads on dangerous ground. However, they're far from the only ISP that is doing this.
That said, if you're an avid usenet user (I'm not) you'll go elsewhere for your newsgroups anyway. FiOS is worth giving up your principals! -
