- joecomputerguy, on 06/23/2009, -3/+60Holy crap. $363? I can build a brand new box for that!
- Diamndzngunz, on 06/23/2009, -2/+42Once you start buying stuff for an old comp, you get all into it and next thing you know you have a new computer.
- beamster, on 06/23/2009, -3/+40Spending $363 to get a 30% gain in performance 100% retarded. Who Diggs this *****?
- rockrapdude, on 06/23/2009, -6/+31Click F5, dummy.
- Amadeus2490, on 06/23/2009, -2/+24PRESS, not click. . .unless it's an on-screen keyboard.
- ipjunkie, on 06/23/2009, -2/+22For that price you can buy a nice Dell refurb and have a three year warranty. I got a 3.0 Ghz core 2 duo desktop system the other day for just over $400 from the Dell outlet. Completely useless article.
- whatsgoodike, on 06/23/2009, -3/+21Where this becomes painful is when you try to upgrade your RAM... even a 4 yearold MB wont take 90% of what's on the market (see ≤ 184pin), and you end up paying more for less. :-/
- ptFoe, on 06/23/2009, -2/+18Install Ubuntu or another Linux distributions.
Or if you like Windows, ask the last Eastern European hacker that accessed your computer to spruce up your desktop for an additional $50 from your credit card. - inactive, on 06/23/2009, -0/+141) Go to the electronic surplus store
2) Grab a Dell that's better than your 4 year old machine for $89
3) Spend that money upgrading it with more modern parts that are cheaper and more efficient. - Xplorer, on 06/23/2009, -3/+15Format and reinstall does wonders... But who doesn't know that...????
B/S Article, much better resources out there.... Much cheaper alternatives as well... - greenmky, on 06/23/2009, -0/+11I can build a whole new PC for about that much - I don't think I've spent more than $200 on a motherboard/CPU/memory overhaul in years. $80 for RAM?? I just put an extra 4GB DDR800 in my box for $25 a few months ago.
If installing a motherboard scares some one ask a friendly tech geek to find you a good deal - like the aforementioned refurb. My dad was running my old Athlon t-bird 1.1ghz box with 256MB of RAM that had a hardware problem (it appears to have been the HDD - an ancient 30GB).
For $350.47 shipped I got him a refurbed (looked new) Dimension 1545 with a dual-core T4200 CPU and 2GB of RAM. I think that's a better investment than trying to pump up an old box.
That said most of the time, you can just re-install Windows as others have said.. That 1.1ghz Athlon worked just fine for him to email and surf and write in MS Word. - jman2807, on 06/23/2009, -6/+15useless comment - buried.
- Enlefo, on 06/24/2009, -0/+9Terrible article.... 375 bucks to make an old machine slightly faster. Buying more RAM and a new HD I agree with but the rest is silly. Reinstall windows. This will increase your speed 30% right there. New audio card?!? Is that gonna make your music sound even 1% better? Probably not. Why not spend that on better speakers. Wireless mouse and keyboard? Clearly in the pics the user is sitting 10 inches in front of the monitor.... now you need to buy extra batteries... awesome. Why do people who know nothing about computers write these articles?!
- inactive, on 06/24/2009, -0/+8I would have just bought a netbook with that amount of money.
- Airbear007, on 06/23/2009, -2/+10Get a new background duh

- MicrosoftBob, on 06/24/2009, -0/+7the best way is to uninstall anti virus like norton.
- graemee, on 06/24/2009, -0/+7Some troll.
- walruspanzer, on 06/23/2009, -4/+11I put linux on all my old machines.
- warp99, on 06/24/2009, -3/+9I put Linux on all my machines.
- djphatjive, on 06/23/2009, -3/+9Boot up Puppy Linux into ram. There Done! Thing Screams even on a old ass 486.
- 2of8, on 06/24/2009, -1/+7Audio card? Ok. Make sure to also buy a new network card for FASTER INTERNET EXPLORER
- Tenoq, on 06/24/2009, -2/+7I spend far more time supporting my mother with her XP laptop than I do with her Ubuntu desktop. Unfortunately she must have XP on the laptop for connectivity to her work domain... but it is a serious PITA. After doing desktop support all day the last thing I want to do is come home and keep working - I think Linux would be a better choice than XP.
Better still, get a new machine. Windows 7 is thoroughly impressing me. - flarn2006, on 06/24/2009, -0/+5Press F5...works on new ones too!
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 06/24/2009, -0/+4Really? Maybe without Aero or any third party apps loaded at all, but my Vista didn't run that great even with 2-Gigs. Not only did games run like garbage, but I had load hangups whenever I did things like pull up a context menu you click the start button.
- sigmaman2, on 06/23/2009, -6/+10Upgrading a 4-year-old PC without upgrading its 4-year-old OS is asking for trouble. The 4-year-old exploits will be there as long as you keep that same OS.
Besides, for the same money spent on upgrading components, you can get a decent new entry-level PC that'll still out-perform the 4 y.o.. - inactive, on 06/23/2009, -2/+6Vista runs just fine on 1 GB if it's kept clean.
- seekretive, on 06/24/2009, -0/+4It's funny that it took a recession to get people to do what "nerds" and "geeks" have been doing all along >.>
- robwhite1979, on 06/24/2009, -0/+4lmfao, yeah, and don't forget to buy a new ethernet cable to plug into the modem, just in case there are some old packets stuck in there slowing things down...

My work is done here. - KMartSheriff, on 06/24/2009, -0/+4Audio cards are useless to most consumers. Onboard sound hardware has come a looooong way and is more than enough for a typical gamer. Unless your doing a lot of audio editing, have too much money to spend, or just want the absolute best sound (although even then that's debatable), then a sound card nowadays is pointless.
- inactive, on 06/24/2009, -0/+4Who the hell is digging this article?
- FairDinkumMate, on 06/24/2009, -0/+4Putting Linux on my mother-in-law's system was the best move I ever made. Desktop shortcuts to the net. Skype, Open Office & the obligatory card games(!!!) & she's done.
One of the biggest issues with her using XP(which would be the same with Vista or 7) is that she turns the PC on, uses it & then turns it off. Sounds great until you realize she probably does this only every few days, meaning that with XP every time she turned it on it had to update the virus definitions & run a scan. It's never bothered me before because I could always schedule the 5am scan but she doesn't give a PC that luxury!
Linux just makes everything much easier & in 2 years she is yet to have any even minor problem with usage. - netneutrality, on 06/23/2009, -0/+4Actually if you "decrapify" things, Windows XP runs just super on 256 MB, which is still four times its minimum requirement.
- cawfee, on 06/23/2009, -1/+5Seriously, especially if it's only for light gaming and media use.
- whodathunk, on 06/24/2009, -0/+3Dude
- jba68, on 06/24/2009, -0/+3but it works awesome on my flash drive.
- TVarmy, on 06/23/2009, -1/+4Agreed. Just get a netbook, and you have a similar experience that's portable, and which you could hook up to the old machine's monitor.
- 2of8, on 06/24/2009, -0/+3The wireless part made the least sense to me. Really, there is no need to complicate things like that. Wired is fine 90% of the time.

- robwhite1979, on 06/24/2009, -0/+3This guy doesn't know what he's talking about... I have a Dell Dimension E521 circa 2006. I just added 4GB of GOOD ram to my system that ended up costing 26$ (4x1024MB DIMMs, cost after mail-in rebates) and a 1TB HDD that I bought discounted to 100$ as an external (removed it from the external case, installed it into the 2nd internal drive bay, added a SATA cable that I got for 3.14$ from ebay, including shipping) which left me with a quality external drive case for the future... Total: 129.14$ CDN and I have a HDD 2x the size of the one this guy put in plus an extra gig of RAM. Gave the 2 512MB RAM DIMMs that I took out to my friend who totally appreciated the gesture so I even got some good karma out of the deal....
- jester55, on 06/24/2009, -0/+3They tell you to buy pretty much a new component for everything. This article may as well be called "how to build a computer."
- admdrew, on 06/24/2009, -0/+3if you download a big file it will usually flush out those old packets
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 06/24/2009, -3/+6Yes, but then you would own a Dell.
- GMofOLC, on 06/24/2009, -1/+4comment bury - useless
- skit4king, on 06/24/2009, -0/+3Slap some paint on it and it'll look like new!
- 2of8, on 06/24/2009, -1/+4Not sure why you're dugg down; this is more true than any other suggestion. Putting RAM in somewhat alleviates the problem, but then you install more crap, and then remove it, but it's not fully removed, etc etc.
I reinstall Windows about once a month and it's amazing :D I've gotten the process down to about an hour. (I use imaging). You may ask, why so often? Because I try out new software pretty often. - antdude, on 06/24/2009, -0/+21 print page: http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?com ...
