- inactive, on 07/02/2009, -2/+39I just want one for more portable porn. At least I'm honest.
- inactive, on 07/02/2009, -4/+40"Just because netbooks are cheap, that doesn't mean you have to expect poor performance."
You don't have to, but you should. - pingveno, on 07/02/2009, -7/+33To anyone who is thinking about programming on one of these things... don't. The small screen is okay for a quick email, but it's extraordinarily difficult to code on.
A few weeks ago a student came to a tutoring lounge with a netbook when I was doing homework there. There wasn't a tutor on duty so I tried to help her. I quickly discovered how difficult it is to understand code when I can only see 10-15 lines. Fortunately for both of us she had to leave before I bashed it again the wall in frustration. The ugly shade of pink didn't help things. - thatspsychotic, on 07/02/2009, -1/+20I love my __(noun)__. No I don't __(verb)__ on it. I have 3 huge ass __(plural noun)__ on my __(furniture)__ for that. But when I want to __(activity)__ while watching __(favorite video)__ through my __(technology)__ on my big __(adjective)__ __(technology)__ while sitting in my __(noun)__ with a __(noun)__, you cant beat a nice tiny __(body part)__.
/madlibs - unknamed, on 07/02/2009, -0/+191.6 GHz Atom CPU, 1GB RAM, 10.1" Screen, 160GB HDD, Windows XP Home <--- Specs for 99% of the netbooks out there, why even bother to compare?
- Peach3s, on 07/02/2009, -2/+20who would buy a netbook for code?
- sfcaptainrob, on 07/02/2009, -3/+20Better yet, who would buy a pink netbook?
- ted510, on 07/02/2009, -0/+15Chicks.
- tonytroz, on 07/02/2009, -1/+16Some how I don't think "cheap ass laptop" would help marketing....
- Peach3s, on 07/02/2009, -2/+17they are great for porn. really.
- Balanced, on 07/02/2009, -5/+19Since it's on MSN, are they biased against the Linux-based netbooks?
- sprack, on 07/02/2009, -2/+14Wow. 30 different netbooks with basically all the same specs. Another Digg article generously donated by Intel.
- bipolar, on 07/02/2009, -0/+12Page 2: "OpenOffice.org – the free Java-based office suite..."
Why do so many tech writers get this wrong? OpenOffice.org is NOT 'java-based'. It can use java for some functions, but it's written in C++. - jakyiscool, on 07/02/2009, -3/+14Just ask two question. Do I really need that netbook? or do I need a laptop?
- vuke69, on 07/02/2009, -0/+10May I suggest the waterproof keyboard option.
- GreatSunJester, on 07/02/2009, -1/+11Vista on a netbook : "is like expecting a baby with one hand tied behind its back to push a Buick up a hill"
I LOL'd. - kmb1794, on 07/02/2009, -1/+11Wait for Win 7.
- Ascus, on 07/02/2009, -1/+11Being old school Mainframe programmer only seeing 20 lines of code at a time was normal. I use my netbook all the time with VS 2008, I prefer my desktop with dual monitors, but when sitting at the airport finishing up a program or just trying out something its fine.
Netbooks should NEVER be a primary computer, they are just when you don't have access to your main computer. - Gudlyf, on 07/02/2009, -0/+10I love my noun. No I don't verb on it. I have 3 huge ass nouns on my noun for that. But when I want to verb while watching nouns through my noun on my big adjective noun while sitting in my place with a beverage, you cant beat a nice tiny noun.
- Meep3D, on 07/02/2009, -0/+9It's a shame none of the netbooks have a USB drive ... wait, they do! Problem solved.
- BuggsyBoy, on 07/02/2009, -3/+12I love my EEE Pc 1000HA. No I don't code on it. I have 3 huge ass screens on my desk for that. But when I want to surf the net while watching hulu through my xbox on my big screen TV while sitting in my recliner with a beer, you cant beat a nice tiny netbook.
- azbmr, on 07/02/2009, -1/+9KILL IT WITH FIRE!
- DBeta, on 07/02/2009, -0/+8I expected as much, but when I read the article, they mention both Linux and OpenOffice.org without bashing them. They spend most of the OS section on Windows, but do accurately say that Linux is faster and cheaper than XP(My recent research says that the gap can be up to $100 for a nearly identical netbook).
- pheezus, on 07/02/2009, -3/+11All they needed to write up in that article was: 1000HE.
- Mujokan, on 07/02/2009, -0/+7I was surprised that it runs a bunch of old games, like Vice City, Morrowind, The Sims 2, Mafia, Halo, and stuff from that era. I just made images of them and mount them (there's a little Microsoft utility called VCdControlTool.exe that does that without having to install any software). (Never have gotten into torrents but of course that is another way to get around the lack of optical drive.)
You can also make isos of DVD movies and run them directly (no mounting) using VLC Media Player. - BrownieMix, on 07/02/2009, -0/+7I'm going to get a Dell Mini with Ubuntu on it. It'll be great to use for web browsing in public.
- frequentFlyer, on 07/02/2009, -0/+7Yep. Seconded.
- MokeyAUS, on 07/02/2009, -3/+9I got mine last week.
I'm in love. - RoccoMcTaco, on 07/02/2009, -0/+6What is this "CD-ROM" you speak of?
- kefkastudio, on 07/02/2009, -0/+6Bought an Asus Eee 900A on a woot special a few weeks ago. It works great as long as you do not have any more than a handful of minimal processor consuming applications open.
- MicrosoftBob, on 07/02/2009, -0/+6Or the colorblind who think they're walking around with a light green netbook.
- earlvanze, on 07/02/2009, -0/+5Yes, in school.
- venomoushealer, on 07/02/2009, -0/+5A) Some of us already have expensive desktops and just want something that we only have to charge once every few days for surfing the internet while we're taking a *****.
B) My eee 1000he has a 95% sized keyboard. It doesn't waste any space. There is no learning curve...I don't even notice when I go from my desktop to my laptop.
C) Last weekend I watched Watchmen and V for Vendetta on a single charge on an airplane. Can your laptop do that? Yes, your iPhone can...but not on a 10" screen. And can you plug your iPhone into a projector and use it at 1600x1200?
I thought not. - Giac, on 07/02/2009, -0/+5the Lenovo s12 with nvidia ION is one of the most impressive netbooks ive seen
- Jaime2000, on 07/02/2009, -0/+5No, no, it's backwards. "Do I really need a laptop, or am I okay with a netbook?"
Netbooks cut it for a lot of people's needs, so it should be assumed as default until you can explain to yourself why you would need the laptop's extra features (and price). - IIECONII, on 07/02/2009, -1/+6I love my computer desk. No, I don't cum on it. I have 3 huge-ass bananas on my barka-lounger for that. But when I want to fall asleep while watching porno through my headphones on my big, vibrating anal-plug, while sitting in my cum-pool with a cucumber, you can't beat a nice tiny *****.
Sex on the mind today...hell, every day. - iPwnN00bs, on 07/02/2009, -0/+5I have 3 laptops and I can honestly say I use my EEE more because it has better battery life and it's more portable.
- Jeffler, on 07/02/2009, -0/+5Its a PCWorld Article, it's just on MSN.
- TimtheTaxMan, on 07/02/2009, -0/+5Ubuntu is a fine choice for an operating system on a netbook. It will keep the price down (which is a big lure of netbooks) while retaining the ability to do everything a netbook needs to do.
- krisrm, on 07/02/2009, -0/+5Why? She's pretty "mainstream", if you know what I mean.
- UselessTrivia, on 07/02/2009, -0/+5Max1001: It would depend on how big a project he was compiling. If it's anything too major I'm guessing he sends files to a version control system for compiling on a server.
- KevinRosa, on 07/02/2009, -0/+5Oh! This is cool. I guess Microsoft is starting to look a little less ***** to diggers after Windows 7, Bing and Project Natal. Reading from msn.com... That's a new one.
- Lane, on 07/15/2009, -0/+4I have the same, adding a gig of ram makes a world of difference.
- kierucom, on 07/02/2009, -0/+4I guess you missed the part under the article title that reads 'PC World Staff'.
- ssmithy, on 07/02/2009, -0/+4go with the MSI Wind
- orb9220, on 07/02/2009, -0/+4What is with the Netbook Hate from (mostly gamers, yungsters?) about?
So they don't have a CD-rom drive. Out of 100 or so lappys I see maybe one or two that ever actually use it in the wild. And you can get a usb ultra-slim one for $65 if you really need one which is rarely.
Keyboards on many are in the 93%-97% range now on many models. And many find them quite usable and comfortable to use. And now with the 12" screens 1024x768 are quite usable and found 10" usable but not ideal.
And another reasons is battery power. I am getting 5.5-6 hrs with wifi and bluetooth on. So sitting in the park sunning and reading some pdf books for 3 to 4 hrs and browsing the internet watching the lappies run for cover looking for AC after only 2!
Games have played Splinter Cell,Max Payne 2 so far with many 5+ old games play fine.
And at 3 pounds and slim fits in my camera bag with my camera and lenses for on the go and can preview images or operate my Nikon D90 from the little netbook doing tethered shooting. And don't have to worry about trying to fit a 15" with AC Adapter in the 6-8 pounds range. Also it is easy to hold in hand and sitting on lap in many circumstances out in the wild. Where a 15" would be unwieldly and cumbersome. And still force me back indoors after only 2 to 2.5 hrs.
Have run Ubuntu,WinXP,Windows 7 just fine on it.
Have run Photoshop CS4 and Lightroom on it and usable but of course no power house for editing to much. But can do general editing just fine.
So just because you can't WoW or Doom3 it doesn't mean it still is not a great alternative to the many other applications that you can do. Yes the portable computer can do other things besides Games!
For me it is Battery Power first and Portablility second. If I want to doom 3 I can on my home system. Same goes for HD movies. Tho I can watch 720 content fine with no lag or stuttering. Why in the hell would someone want to watch a 1080HD on a 14" or 15" screen anyways? Does it really make that much of a difference? I don't think so.
So stop the bashing. Just because it isn't for you doesn't mean it doesn't do great for others.
I welcome the competion. Maybe it will force the Laptop makers to making their laptops into 5-8 hr machines as they should have been in the first place. - EtherGnat, on 07/02/2009, -0/+4Dell Mini 9 or Mini 10v (although the latter is more difficult to upgrade the RAM on). Everything works perfectly.
- bigplrbear, on 07/02/2009, -1/+5Why do people say they have problems playing 720p content on these things? I play 720p video on my Acer Aspire One all the time and it doesn't st. st stutter.
- orb9220, on 07/03/2009, -0/+4"I doubt you did half the ***** you claim to do on it, but whatever."
Yep I have done all those things. And don't care if you believe it or not. Any Netbook forum will prove that. But it does show how open and unbiased mind you have? /Sarcasm -
