- txcrew, on 09/09/2009, -7/+704I love how this page makes it look so simple. I will do this tomorrow and fail.
- CLShortFuse, on 09/09/2009, -13/+459I'm thinking the people who can actually follow these directions don't need these instructions.
- pak314, on 09/09/2009, -4/+202Why not install the server version of Ubuntu?
- FoodTiger, on 09/09/2009, -9/+184my son do this, but he have drug problem and wreak toyota corrala
- touchinmyself, on 09/09/2009, -4/+106probably because it has no GUI by default and the guide was aimed at novices.
- rob04, on 09/09/2009, -11/+103Pretty descriptive how to on building your own file server. 2 thumbs up! ++
- CalcProgrammer1, on 09/09/2009, -5/+90Not trying to self-promote necessarily, but I wrote a very similar guide a while ago on Instructables that has a little more detail.

If you consider it to be spam, bury me, just trying to add some information. - BxBoy, on 09/09/2009, -5/+68Nice & Simple.
Although, I would also recommend FreeNAS or OpenFiler. - crownedgriffin, on 09/09/2009, -15/+75Meh. I'll stick with my Windows server. It's easy to use, and (gasp!) works flawlessly. I'm sure I'll be buried into oblivion for that, but whatever.
- KibibyteBrain, on 09/09/2009, -0/+58Or wouldn't use a desktop distro like Xubuntu to run a headless server. At least use Ubuntu-Server.
- iziizi, on 09/09/2009, -22/+77I know i'll get dug down for this but...
Why not just an old copy of XP pro on? Sharing is piss easy, setting up IIS is piss easy, setting up FTP is piss easy blablabla...
I have Ubuntu installed on my Netbook. It is brilliant for free OS and it can do just as much as any other operating system. However, it is yet mature enough for the mas market. GUI interfaces are needed for the tards out there who can't follow root instructions. - dobermaniac, on 09/09/2009, -1/+43Uhh.... or you can use the minimal install cd from the ubuntu website and not have to uninstall all that crap. just install openssh and samba, edit the smb.conf and you're good to go.
- CalcProgrammer1, on 09/09/2009, -6/+46You can run a file server off just about anything. I have a spare desktop that I set up as a server running Windows XP (some apps I use don't run on Linux :( ). FTP and HTTP are essentials if you want to host things online (great for giving your friends large files). VNC (I use TightVNC) is cross-platform and allows you to remotely access and control your server by mirroring it's screen, keyboard, and mouse to your client PC. With Windows it is easy to set up LAN sharing (haven't quite gotten Samba working as well as XP's file sharing) so that people on your network can access your files (great for college dorm networks). I also run TVersity so that I can access my media (mainly FLAC music library) on Xbox 360's. Since it is always on, it is a great place to run torrents and large downloads, VNC can control uTorrent or you can use the uTorrent WebUI.
- CeruleanRed, on 09/09/2009, -1/+38Would do business again! A+++++++++++
- Mistlefoot, on 09/09/2009, -1/+32Step 3 - do all your updates.
Step 7 (what now) - plug in the internet....
Hopefully the rest of the steps are more reliable then this one. I'd suggest plugging in the internet before doing updates in the future.... - ATL, on 09/09/2009, -1/+31you can run GUI programs on a server version w/o the X environment actually running on the server...
ssh -X (server IP)
(command of program)
if you have windows, make sure you have openssh and xing installed first - MEGACAMZ, on 09/09/2009, -4/+34This has to be an instant internet meme!
Classic! - Garciat, on 09/09/2009, -1/+31You only gave one thumb up. /s I'll help you with the second one.
- danr2c2, on 09/09/2009, -1/+30I like your broken engrish.
- SoundFondler, on 09/09/2009, -0/+28Well you've ruined it now.
- IllBeBack, on 09/09/2009, -1/+29Are you starting a contest with syntaxgs to see who can write more stupidly?
- digitalpencil, on 09/09/2009, -2/+27*you're
(sorry, i hate the nazis too but you can't understand how much seeing that makes my skin crawl) - ivantalboys, on 09/09/2009, -0/+24I like his broken Toyota.
- aychseven, on 09/09/2009, -4/+281. install from a flash drive. that way you don't need to waste money / time on a cd drive and CDs
2. don't install a distro of linux that's meant for desktop users, forcing you to strip it down. use something like arch that starts you off with a simple base set of packages and install what you need. better yet: freebsd.
3. if at all possible, don't have one hard disk. especially if your data is important to you. software raids are pretty common these days, and it's often cheaper to get a couple smaller drives than one large one.
4. why bother with FTP? if you're using this server just to share info around the house, use samba or nfs etc. if you need external access to your data, find another way. chances are your ISP blocks port 21, so the configuration provided will fail you anyways. - iziizi, on 09/09/2009, -8/+31@BobOki
#1 - IIS is a single instance which can have multiple virtual directories and therefore unlimited websites. IIS also can run php.
#2 - that’s BS - we are talking about a home network for sharing files
#3 - I wouldn’t use IIS ftp, I would use FileZilla
#4 - XP can be stripped well back just like ubuntu - they are the same size initially remember.
The point is, a well set up XP box (which now has 10 years of patches and is stable and secure), would be more than adequate for a home user.
We also defer from my original point that many home users don’t know how to use anything which isn't GUI. - zeabu, on 09/09/2009, -2/+24I disagree. I never used linux before, so I'd need these instruction, but I'm savy enough to understand all of this and thus follow it. (after all most is just copy-paste)
- iziizi, on 09/09/2009, -4/+25@Elranzer - who mentioned pirating?
- DirtPile, on 09/09/2009, -0/+21There is no good effort. Only do, or do not.
- israfil334, on 09/09/2009, -3/+24you're right. Eventhough I would love to run linux on my server, I stick to XP for ease of use because im not a linux pro
- Jonjonr6, on 09/09/2009, -1/+20sudo make me a fileserver?
- MEGACAMZ, on 09/09/2009, -1/+19i am truley sorry for your lots
- bradleyland, on 09/09/2009, -1/+18"after all most is just copy-paste"
Famous last words. - tgc1, on 09/09/2009, -0/+17Those are the ISP's to avoid.
- airstrike, on 09/09/2009, -0/+16That's not what she said.
- robwhite1979, on 09/09/2009, -2/+18I've always wanted to setup my own server like this so I could have quick and easy access to my media when I'm travelling... The only thing is, since my DSL has terrible upload speeds I'd only be able to use it around my house so there is no real advantage unless I pay A LOT more for an upgraded DSL package :(
- DirtPile, on 09/09/2009, -0/+16Waffle House Server?
- Anthop, on 09/09/2009, -0/+14Yep, serves up waffles. Isn't that way better than files?
- ATL, on 09/09/2009, -1/+15except FTP sends your password in plain text across the internet... doing that from a public network isn't the best way to go
since you are already running ubuntu, just SSH into it, use a client like tunnelier or even filezilla (portable if you must) set to FTP over SSH mode... and you don't have to worry about ports because its on port 22.... ive never been blocked with that port... - Probatus, on 09/09/2009, -1/+15Real men, soldiers and heroes use Solaris.
- marciot, on 09/09/2009, -1/+14Just wait until the RIAA finds out about your "file server".
- imkrazy182, on 09/09/2009, -2/+15Would a 4th help?
- aznhomig, on 09/09/2009, -3/+15Probably a good reason why a lot of businesses use that rather than going through the trouble and headache of DIY Linux distros, as specialized and powerful as they are.
- Kaegro, on 09/09/2009, -2/+14I've got your third thumb right here!
- CalcProgrammer1, on 09/09/2009, -3/+15Why would you need to install Linux on it? Just put all your files in common or open formats and include programs to run the media for Windows, Mac, and Linux (VLC should work fine on all OS'es). Then you can just use whatever OS the PC is running and have more room for media.
- acid_jazz, on 09/09/2009, -1/+13I love LAMP.
- KibibyteBrain, on 09/09/2009, -1/+13This is about making a file server, not a media center PC. I would not recommend integration of these components, it would be both wasteful(MCPC needs powerful CPU and Graphics compared to low-demand server) and poor practice(want as few things to crash the server as possible going on, much the less heavy multimedia stuff)
- sporkit, on 09/09/2009, -0/+11Become a sys admin in six easy steps! I have a job because this kind of thing isn't easy.
- phatagnus, on 09/09/2009, -0/+11Plug in The Internet and let the world mess with your samba default install and your ISP to taste your broadcasts. No thanks.
- flahavin, on 09/09/2009, -1/+12Why not just use Debian? Base install without any crap (or X), then
apt-get install samba proftpd nfs-kernel-server
The only thing we need is a media-sharing server to stream straight to the XBOX360. Anyone have any good ideas on this part? - cbeagle, on 09/09/2009, -0/+11I would use Openfiler/FreeNAS over XP any day! And I would recommend them to a novice.
1) Its free
2) It already has everything configured, you just need to turn the things you want on
3) No Monitor/Keyboard/Mouse required, just a web browser
4) No knowledge of the inner workings needed, other than what would be required to program a Linksys router
If you are a "Novice" user, and have trouble installing/configuring Samba/Apache/ProFTPd, then you have no business configuring IIS, or any Windows service that is exposed to the internet. (without instruction from a professional). Security is as good as the person who secures it, regardless of the OS. -
