- Zaxcomp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21Machines building machines.
- Anpheus, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20Yeah, who needs CPUs and their status as neither complex nor essential.
- funkspiel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13I like the way these things smell when they are new.
- vdubski, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Yeah, I remember when this was on digg before. But it was a very interesting tour, and I'm sure some people missed it last time around.
- thcobbs, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14Have you ever seen the schematic/symbolic layout of a CPU??
Ever seen one created from silicon ingot?
Obviously not if you think this is the most complex process. Line techs at a CPU manufacturer usually have PhDs. - digdugsmug, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12I agree with your sarcasm. When I first read the description of this dig I immediately thought “what about the CPU?” Motherboards are quite complex but look at the amount of resources that go into CPU research and improvement. Motherboard improvements are mostly driven by CPU requirements so doesn’t that make them secondary?
- geeshock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Kudos to Gigabyte for letting the people to snoop about.
- merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Motherboards, by the most basic definitions of complexity, are less complex. A modern CPU has thousands of times more components than a motherboard. A CPU has billions of transistors. A mother board has a few hundred resistors, transistors, and capacitors, a handful of ASICs, and some connectors.
- mitrovarr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7It's really odd how the first half of the process is almost completely automated, and the second half almost completely not. It's like the automation engineers got bored halfway through designing the system and went home.

.. Priceless :D - cbreaker, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Ahh but the motherboard, I argue, is more important then the CPU. Meaning, while the CPU is more complex, it's the motherboard that has to bring all the various parts together to make a functioning system. In effect, the motherboard IS the computer.
Motherboard makers have the task of combining many different technologies, interfaces, and connectors together to form the computer. Sometimes they do a good job, sometimes they do a ***** one, and you can tell what you've got pretty quickly. - Rikkochet, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9mc7winkie:
Insert your Windows Setup CD and boot off it. The installer will let you reformat the drive or attempt to repair Windows.
Everyone please digg me down for responding positively to an off topic post in the comments :( - venom8599, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Could be any NT-based build of Windows: NT itself, 2000, XP, 2003 Server. In this case the server seems to be running IIS 5.0 which was in Windows 2000. (Used ID Serve from grc.com to check it.)
- muaddib420, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4yeah, the mobo may not be as complex or sexy as CPU fab, but all those pics still stoked the nerd in me. digg!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5The title is misleading. It does not show how motherboard PCB are made. It just shows SMT, SMD assembly. I work in the industry and even the design of PCB layout is very complicated. After that manufacturing PCB's requires so many steps esp those MB PCB's that have more than 20 layers.

Silicon ingots are the crystal of silicon that the wafers are cut from. - cryptocom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I dunno, I think the power cord would be the 'most' essential part of the pc...
- CompUComp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+320 steps to making a motherboard! Wow! I always thought motherboards was just a simple stampage from those big machines and presto you're done. Very good thing to know. Dugg.
- bbear, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3CPUs don't pop out of a giant machine ready made to be plugged into a socket. There are also a lot of people involved in the production of a CPU and the consequences of failure much more expensive.
- Endeavour3d, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'll probably be dugg down for this, but did anyone see the sheer number of cute girls that worked there?
- grumpyrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Damn, only got to p4.

Whoa, is that NT4? - anarchy2465, on 10/12/2007, -7/+10Back in the day you had to buy all the transistors and everything and solder it all together yourself. Those were the first computers, heh.
- bluerei, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8I lived 5 minutes away from that place, it's not that big of a factory really. Nice place though. Next to it is some crazy cult church with insane people always hanging around the factory talking about how God is in those motherboards. I wouldn't doubt it with the way you can overclock anything on those mobos.
- sunn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Thanks!
- Amplix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yes....... the backs of their heads are cute..
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I really think Gigabyte makes good mobos, i have an abit, and it has been nothing but junk, if you go their forum and speak about any other products, or compare to a non abit product, they will delete your post. My bro has an old p4 socket 478 on a gigabyte and i enjoy all the overclocking options, seems very stable (even for an old board)
- stryker2you, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@Rikkochet
Even though digg is NOT a tech support forum, it's nice when someone actually responds nicely to someone genuinely asking for help.
@mc7winkie
Google.com is your best friend. You should be able to easily get to a forum that will help you...or even check out the manufactures website and see what you can come up with.
@Digg Community
Please show everyone that NOT all digg users are asshats or prepubescent ignoramuses and try not to digg this guy down to china. It's not like he picked a random post that had nothing to do with his motherboard...give the guy a little slack and try to understand that not everyone on digg is an expert at computers. - Hush, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6I would pay 1.5x the normal amount, just to get one made in the U.S.
- digdugsmug, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2agreed
- ekso, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Make lesser mistakes be acceptable
All your gigabytes are belong to us - yahoofrom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2how's a fatherboard made?
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ok, I wrote that too soon. Looks like they do some automated tests as well. But this makes it even more surprising that bad boards are still getting through the testing process.
- tektalk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1He spelled molten wrong
- tmcdigg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Where's the back room where the motherboard makers get in bed with the chip makers and decide to make system bus and CPU sockets obsolete every 12-18 months?
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1These two ladies doing the motherboard testing in this pic missed a few I think. Just ask everyone who's had to RMA their Conroe motherboards recently. They need to test these boards a little more thoroughly. Seriously. A little more than just seeing if they boot up and don't explode.
http://www.pcstats.com/articleimages/200502/GigabyteFactory_test2.jpg
I am NOT saying this is a Gigabyte problem, just with recent Conroe boards in general. - ziki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Does every motherboard manufacturer have such a large factory like this? Are there motherboard rebadges?
- phantomgrave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow, pretty good read. I wish I could hook up my motherboard for testing in about a minute....
- strictnein, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Agreed. Motherboards are relatively simple pieces of hardware.
- starguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The problem with Gigabyte, is its a Taiwanese company, who haven't hired any native American's to provide English tech support. I have a Gigabyte motherboard, and its excellent, except for one flaw: when it comes out of Standbye mode sometimes, it will not send power to the CPU fan... and therefore without watching for this, you can cook your CPU rather quickly. Sure the alarm continues to sound that the CPU fan isn't spinning, but its not the CPU fans fault, its not getting any power at all. You can come out of Standby right back to the Windows Desktop, and the fan will spin up, then die right back down. Now how in the world am I going to explain this to them, to add a fix into thier bios for this bug, after reading their BIOS upgrade page it is clear no one there will have a clue how to understand my English email. I mean, these instructions below to upgrade all motherboard BIOS are from their main corporate website, Its in horrible Tawi-engrish:
a. In method I, if it shows two or more motherboard's model names to be selected, please make sure your motherboard's model name again. Selecting wrong model name will cause the system unbooted.
b. In method II, be sure that motherboard's model name in BIOS unzip file are the same as your motherboard's. Otherwise, your system won't boot.
c. In method I, if the BIOS file you need cannot be found in @BIOS server, please go onto GIGABYTE's web site for downloading and updating it according to method II.
d. Please note that any interruption during updating will cause system unbooted.
e. GIGABYTE Technology Co., Ltd is not responsible for damages of system because of non-correct process of updating FlashBIOS" to avoid any claims from end-users. - 13thfloor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+120 pages!?!? f that...
And although it is kinda old, still interesting, but not for 20 pages... - jolionessness, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why is he being dugg down?
- deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I see what he's trying to say: motherboards are more complex in terms of all these separate parts being mixed and matched in the factory. Obviously the internal CPU design is incredibly complex but the actual process of attaching the CPU core to the socket is simple compared to what these motherboards go through.
- JorgeGT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"make lesser mistakes"
that explain many thing, Gigabyte... - evilelf2407, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yeeess, now i know how its done, i can go and make my own equipment and make counterfeit motherboards.
- mc7winkie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i've done that and whenever I try to repair it brings me to a DOS prompt that is pretty much broken. It won't let me change directories out of C:windows. What gives?
- mojaam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I found this interesting. I like seeing forieng factories or culture in general.
- yahoofrom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1no video?
