- Cglass, on 10/12/2007, -1/+39Yeah man, 987 gigs just doesn't cut it for me.
- pak314, on 10/12/2007, -3/+31everyone favorite "Get Perpendicular" :)

- rmda812, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19That's still not enough space to save the Star Jones sex tape
- trejrco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17... buy 2, they're (relatively) cheap ... :)
- whamdanglers, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17Backup might bother you, but defrag scares the hell out of me.
- ViceVirtue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12And yet if I wanted all the porn on the Internet, I'd need at least a thousand of these.
- geoken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11I can't believe their still using the deskstar branding.
- Digital2k6, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10RAID 5 four of these for about 3TB of redundant data for $1,600. That's the way to go.
- rebelyell2k5, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10My only concern is backing up these things. Thats a whole lot of data to back up, and if you dont, what happens when something goes wrong with the drive? That's a lot of data to lose.
- TomFrost, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6actually, the seek times could be very good. This appears to be a normal-sized hard drive with the same size discs inside of it, which means that the bits of data on the disks must be very, very close together. So while it might take X amount of time to travel 1000 bits clockwise on the same cylinder on a small hard drive, this would travel, say, 10,000 bits in the same cylinder in the same amount of time. As long as the motor inside is deadly precise, seek times on this drive could very well beat what we're used to.

Moreover the link works for me..Sorry..The small red button for you.. - titlesaysitall, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6You must aim for it's exhaust ports with your proton cannon.
- UglieJosh, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Actually, the dirty little secret is that, whether or not the porn companies adopt a certian technology determines whether or not it is successfull.
This is why VHS pwned BETA. - Rikkochet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I think you answered your own question.. That's a lot of data to back up, SO BACK IT UP IF YOU VALUE IT.
I could stand to lose a few hundred gigs of porn and bad TV shows.. Vital things like emails, bookmarks, and photos get backed up weekly and fit on 2 DVDs.. It's a pretty simple matter to use something like Nero BackItUp and cherry pick what you want backed up. It even pops open your drive on a schedule and nags you to insert a recordable disc. - shredswithpiks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5lol http://digg.com/hardware/Seagate_Anounces_1TB_Consumer_Hard_drive
- beelz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5thats the best thing ever
- wwjd3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4well that was quick. seagate's story just came out and now this. hitachi had me at $400... :-D
- drgruney, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4A friend of mine had several Deskstar 100GBs fail. I have a 200GB that's never given me trouble, inspite of a busted pin. Now Maxtor 80GB udma 133 drives... those crashed like there's no tomorrow.
- Genthree, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5You've obviously never actually seen the musical. It's hysterical.
- soulpunisher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I would have to say raid 6 is better so you can have more then 1 hard drive go out and be okay until you fix it.
- KnytFyre, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I recall a friend of mine in the early nineties telling me about his latest acquisition, a 1 GB hard drive. I remember thinking, "Damn, what the heck to you put on a 1GB drive to fill it, you'll never need a new HD again." I catch myself thinking the same thing about this, which scares me, cause I'm realizing I need more space than my 250GB HD that I currently have in my system just 15 or so years after thinking a 1GB would last forever. So I expect in another 15ish years I'll be scanning the current version of NewEgg or Geeks, looking for an inexpensive 250TB drive. Scary thoughts.
- simpleid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm really happy hdd's are reasonably priced, even when 'brand new' or 'barrier breaking.' Not charging an arm and a leg for components just for new marketing terms is a plus in this industry. (Even gpu's are doing better, prices drop at a faster rate now than before.) Hell how about the C2D, for crying out loud intel is going to force the whole industry to JUMP for E6300 with 3.0ghz potential + on just AIR for $190 (1.6 stock).
If you look at newegg's prices for 250-500gb drives, you'll see this is actually very reasonably priced, if not flat out cheap. There are some 500GB drives for $100+ over this 1TB drive.
Nice. - lilrabbit129, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Porn has probably decided every major format war in the last few years. Beta vs VHS, DVD vs Laserdisc, Blu-ray vs HDDVD...
Course Blu-ray vs HD-DVD is still ramping up. - fifrenzy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3With 1.5TB of hard drive space on my home server I understand the need for larger drives, but what I want to see is faster hard drives that are less prone to failure. I wish they would invest more R&D into that focus. After all the hard drive represents one of the biggest bottlenecks on your computer.
- biff_m, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4inkubux, i hope you meant 20 BD-R...although i wouldn't mind having a 100 TB HDD
- theOster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3i'm with namco
RAID is all there is - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4actually 93gigs short
1024 - 931 = 93Gigs short - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Beat me to it ;)
- orlyfactor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I will never buy another IBM/Hitachi drive, no matter how they say they have improved. I had bought about 10 for clients, about 7 went bad within the first 3 months. Never, ever again. Seagate, OTOH, are mint!
- Cglass, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's not a secret unless you live in a closet or a cave.
- Ramble, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Semi-conductor physics has nothing to do with hard drives bar the actual controller card.
You do know what a semi-conductor is right? - DamageInc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Good job just copying & pasting the description and not removing the strike through porn so the digg description doesn't make sense.
- ramsinks.com, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Ya, as if any self respecting tech wants a larger DeathStar..
please. - tmcdigg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21st comment: IT"S ABOUT FRIGGEN TIME
2nd comment: EAT IT SEAGATE!
3rd comment: NOW COMPETE, AND LOWER THE PRICE!!!
:-)
I say it not only for myself, I say it for all you who KNOW you want a 1tb drive... haha! - xxdesmus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That really is quite a good price ...I can't wait for one of these in my new system :)
- godd4242, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i want one
no i could never fill it up but still
good day for harddrives
first the 32gb flash and now this
defrag will be painful, but maybe someone will release a better method or algorithm or somesuch? - godd4242, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1on one drive?
there's been one before this? - Sethwm2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why even make a PATA drive PATA should be dead by now. If you can afford a $400.00 hard drive you have a computer with SATA
- soulpunisher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's not the size of your hard drive that matters...it's how you use it :-)
- Linh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1umm... this drive is 7200rpm. 10k drives for the consumer are still too damn loud IMO. keep in mind I said consumer, not computer/geek enthusiast.
- soulpunisher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I will be more impressed when I see a 1TB solid state hard drive.
- PhantomZmoove, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I didn't even click the link and I already lol'ed.
- hypercube33, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've had bad luck with both seagate and hitachi, but not as bad of luck as with the old 2GB Western Digitals or the 80GB Maxtors...horrible drives. (I dont buy IBM 75GXPs either)
- johnstar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1everyone sing it, lets get perpendicular!
- SanTe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The dialogue is cheesy and clunky, but I give 'em props for the Schoolhouse Rock! homage. :) Reminds me of "I'm Just a Bill" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7JNlezY163M
- grumpyrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Depends what OS formatted it. For XP or newer, about 256TB.
- Namco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've had 2 120GB Deskstars in my TIVO for the past couple years. Haven't lost a show, seasonpass, or thumbs yet. I got them after the whole deathstar debacle I guess.
- SammyJr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No RAID isn't a backup, but you have a crappy RAID controller if you end up with "invalid array." I have Linux software RAID 5 arrays that have been running for years and that have survived moves in the back of a truck. My 3ware arrays have been equally reliable. My Areca array is doing good so far.
Also, backups for RAID arrays of this size can be impractical for many users. How much does an LTO type drive cost? How much are tapes? We're talking thousands of dollars for a tape backup solution for a system of this nature. I could build a duplicate storage server or two for less than the price of a tape backup system. Any don't say DVDs... How many DVDs would it take to back up a 3, 4, 5tb array?
You just have to protect and monitor your array. Use Volume Shadow Copy or some form of snapshots. Restrict write/delete access to the data that every user/account doesn't need to modify. Use virus protection on your servers and clients. Make sure the server is connected to a reliable UPS. Unless you're rich - then buy that LTO3 system! -
