- sysoprock, on 11/26/2007, -2/+28I sure hope that sewer looks amazing in DX10, you're going to be running through it over and over and over and over.....
- cgruber, on 11/26/2007, -4/+24Does it fix the part where the game sucks?
- scabbers, on 11/26/2007, -6/+26The problem is the VISTA part of dx10... I don't want it (yet, anyway).
- darktiger, on 11/26/2007, -5/+21This is worth a digg. The difference in Hellgate btw DX9 and DX10 is very noticeable....I have played both, and cannot go back to DX9....
- grat2001, on 11/26/2007, -2/+15It may be nice, but Vista is not worth the price of admission...It is such a hog and I constantly get, "Display driver stop working" for my Nvidia card.
- Caffeinate, on 11/26/2007, -3/+16DX10 vs. DX9 is a noticeable difference, but the game itself beyond the graphics has a lot of issues. It has a lot of bugs that need to be fixed and frankly, it is not finished. It needs several months before I would recommend it without hesitation, but maybe others can look beyond the bugginess. For me, though, there are too many other good games out there to waste time trying to enjoy this one when it is clear it won't be ready for another 6 months or so. Play something else, and try it later.
- mythicflux, on 11/26/2007, -18/+30It's too bad that in order to use DX10 you need Windows Vista. I don't feel like downgrading at this time.
- spyd3rweb, on 11/26/2007, -6/+17Im 100% certain that a few tweaks could allow these 'DX10 only' effects to run just fine on DX9.
- joeanon, on 11/26/2007, -12/+23Oh wow looks like DX isn't a failure today. Yea of course if it looks better the performance is worse. The DX horror stories are just more anti-MS propaganda. Waste of time really. It's not as if there are good alternatives to DX from a developers standpoint DX is the full suite compared to a piecemeal of tools.
So, sensationalist anti-MS postings on Digg cannot be trusted as they are always highly biased. Plenty of these people would put up the worst case DX scenario and call that a 'fair and balance' comparison.
I'd had read far before seeing anything on digg about DX performance being slightly slower but nothing to worry about.
The real question is how do developers like it, it seems they must, since we have games coming up on Dx10 rather quickly if not perhaps too soon for the performance hit. It's good to stay ahead and all, but too much and people can't play the game. Knida like NWN2 when it came out. It was VERY anticipated by millions but could only actually run on a fraction of those excited peoples computers (even with patches).
In most cases this is bad coding and has nothing to do with the API. - zachshmack, on 11/26/2007, -2/+12I guess I don't get it. All of the DX10 shots just look like blurrier, less crisp versions of the DX9. I guess that makes it more "realistic", but this is a game after all...
- Dustmuffins, on 11/26/2007, -0/+9Graphics does not contain the letter "x"
- TheRemoteViewer, on 11/26/2007, -1/+9Too bad the game is still a buggy *****.
- Asianwaste, on 11/26/2007, -1/+8I've got nothing against DX10 gaming, but no matter what interface you use, Hellgate is pretty soso. Not the game I would use represent DX10 gaming.
- kristov, on 11/26/2007, -3/+10I thought the big "to-do" with DX10 was the ability for it to have cooler effects and not have a performance hit.
Im pretty sure with DX9 they could have extra particles flying around slowing your frame rates. - gcnaddict, on 11/26/2007, -1/+6That's exactly the type of comment the sane people on digg hate.
- spyd3rweb, on 11/26/2007, -2/+7What are these noticeable differences?
Motion blur works just fine in DX9, and so does depth of field effects. - Nastjuid, on 11/26/2007, -2/+7You would really have to see the two one after the other. Texture quality is a prime example. I'd post HQ vids up on filefront, but unfortunately my machine freaks out when I hit record in fraps. I run x64_dx10 and I've only got 2g of ram in my machine, but it's common for HGL to run up 1.7 of that. HGL is a good reference point, though, of what kind of hardware I'm going to need in my next machine.
- asspants, on 11/26/2007, -1/+5I'm sure it's just the still shots not doing it justice, but I don't think that the DX10 stuff looks better.
- JonnyTrombone, on 11/26/2007, -1/+5Hellgate London doesn't give gamers jack *****. Terrible plot and quests, extremely repetitive areas, incompetent developers who get rid of the best aspects of the game... the list goes on. Hell, over half the players disappeared when they stopped letting Beta players online without buying the retail version! I -pity- the poor suckers who shelled out $200 for a "lifetime subscription."
- lcmatt, on 11/26/2007, -0/+4Go back to grinding instead of posting crap about WoW.
- Matri, on 11/27/2007, -0/+4You've been stuck under a rock for too long.
- roystgnr, on 11/27/2007, -0/+4About half of those effects were blurring of one sort or another, so maybe the idea is that with DirectX 10 you can't see just how much it sucks.
- RoboDonut, on 11/26/2007, -3/+6"It's not as if there are good alternatives to DX from a developers standpoint DX is the full suite compared to a piecemeal of tools."
So SDL + OpenGL is a "piecemeal of tools" now?
People might be a little harsh on DirectX 10, but you're doing the same thing to OpenGL. You make it sound like it's much harder to use than it really is. - frostw, on 11/27/2007, -1/+4Grow up spyd3rweb
- inactive, on 11/26/2007, -12/+15Meh, Crysis does motion blur in DX9 just fine, and patched files allow it to run very high settings without DX10. All this tells me is that the programmers of HGL are inferior to the ones working on Crysis.
- Haohmaru, on 11/26/2007, -1/+4No, there is nothing right about MS at anytime, anywhere, anyhow. Any seeming positive news is simply being misunderstood.
- i4mt3hwin, on 11/26/2007, -2/+5The problem is that all of the DX10 effects could have been easily implemented into DX9 and probably had even less of a performance hit. Look at Crysis for example, if the custom config never came out people would have been in awe over Very High... except all the Very High stuff works in DX9, it was just removed on purpose.
- rz8472, on 11/27/2007, -1/+4Too bad there's still massive memory allocation issues with the game, and subpar gameplay. Thanks again, EA.
I gave up after my framerate randomly jumps from 25fps to 0.2fps and then back to 25fps. - orph3us, on 11/27/2007, -2/+5Considering that DirectX is MS only, I think the criticisms are justified. Look at the Source engine and recent troubles porting to PS3... if it had been done in OpenGL to start with they wouldn't have any of these problems and we'd probably have ports to Linux and OS X as well.. DirectX might be a nice programming environment, but the fact that it's not portable is another way MS ensures control and a monopoly upon the future. I don't think its a good thing for programmers to embrace..
- warriorscot, on 11/26/2007, -2/+5To be honest there is nothing in XP or Vista to make anyone have any really valid point to stick with either, Ive had Vista a while and it runs almost as fast as XP did faster with day to day stuff anyway if not games(not enough to notice). So it wont make a difference to get it or not people that say you wont get it till SP1 on principle are just muppets, ask yourself the question does it work now and do I want something on it? If the answers are yes just get it and stop moaning it doesn't carry a deadly disease and it isn't going to break anything.
- mrASSMAN, on 11/27/2007, -1/+4I have a dual-boot system and some of the games I've played actually have a higher frame-rate in vista. Such as Portal.
- sgtpppr, on 11/26/2007, -1/+3No.
- mandarin, on 11/26/2007, -1/+3Too bad the game is repetitive...
- Destinatus, on 11/27/2007, -2/+4Whats the point of watching movies with good stories either for that matter? also your name is stupid.
- sgtpppr, on 11/26/2007, -1/+3I desperately tried to play this game, but after 15 hours of running around the exact same environments mindlessly killing the same 'demons', i just could not even play anymore. It was plagued with bugs (which I did my best to ignore), but there is pretty much zero story and no point in even playing online. I'm not even going to mention the inventory system...*shudder*.
- init100, on 11/27/2007, -0/+2"I could be wrong however seeing how id released a lot of games with no problem......"
The ID games do not interface directly with the kernel, but rather with the system libraries. And those are stable, you can run software from years back with few or no problems at all. The only applications that are problematic with new kernels are those that require their own kernel modules, such as VMware. - ryuujinusa, on 11/27/2007, -1/+3I wish I had DX10 for this game, it's so much fun.
- adwarereport, on 11/27/2007, -1/+3I shelled out $700 for a new rig recently and decided to give Hellgate London a chance. Man, does this game suck. I will NEVER trust gamespot again. EVER.
- init100, on 11/27/2007, -0/+2The effects are no exclusive to DX10, as they are also available as OpenGL extensions. Write your game in OpenGL and the so called DX10 effects are available on XP (and Linux, etc) too.
- warriorscot, on 11/26/2007, -0/+2I would have to agree about the game, it played ok even on my old clunker but it was too buggy and to be perfectly honest was a little boring, there wasn't much driving the story which sounded fairly interesting but could have done with a bit more explanation early on or a better hook. And something to make the levels a little less monotonous would have been nice, I was expecting something like stalker with swords and found a bit of a damp squib.
- Stonekeeper, on 11/26/2007, -3/+5yeah, so I'm not gonna pay for a hardware upgrade, an OS downgrade just to play DX10 games.
I don't think I'm alone. - 4eloBek, on 11/26/2007, -1/+3it is noticeable just a lil bit, but not worth the money or time to even bother
- Masefield, on 11/27/2007, -0/+2Agreed. In the beta test, the devs kept telling us to ignore the problems. We were playing an old build and just stress testing the servers. The new build was sunshine and lollipops and would solve everything. HA!
I feel really bad for those who took the Founder's offer. Check out the HGL forums. It's getting ugly over there. - mrASSMAN, on 11/27/2007, -1/+2Yeah that was an Nvidia bug.. doesn't do that with the latest drivers.
- Stonekeeper, on 11/28/2007, -0/+1omfg, sorry... you think they do? prove me wrong!
- Caffeinate, on 11/30/2007, -0/+1As others have stated, the game is a *****. I don't blame Microsoft/Vista/nVidia/whoever for this one - this is all Flagship Studios. The game is messed up.
- Caffeinate, on 11/30/2007, -0/+1For the last day and a half, you can't even party up with anyone in multiplayer (provided you could even find people to play with using the woefully inferior chat interface). To me, it seems like this game got butchered in order to save content to be released later at the subscription price. I've tried to play, but the bugs are just overwhelming after a while. Multiplayer is a train wreck, nightmare mode is broken, and you can't equip half of the items you find in the late game due to them either requiring a level higher than the cap (need to be lvl 51, when the level cap is 50!? ) or because of the stat feed. Anyone glossing over those facts has not even tried NM mode.
Combine that with any number of quest breakers, game breakers, and things like not being able to loot the final boss because he fell into the "rocks" or because a portal appeared on top of you and ports you out of the game, and the fun just dies. - orph3us, on 11/27/2007, -1/+2Unfortunately I'm starting to learn why Linux may never be a good gaming system. With open source kernels, binary releases may be broken by updating the linux kernel. I don't know too much about it, but when my vmware install failed to work properly because of a new kernel. Things change fast in the kernel, thats good, but also bad for software that can't be compiled to install. If I understand correctly, thats why a lot of software has to be compiled to be installed... I could be wrong however seeing how id released a lot of games with no problem......
- orph3us, on 11/27/2007, -1/+2actually I think it is... a subset of DX10 at least
- JP42, on 11/29/2007, -0/+1The difference is negligible. One is not an improvement over the other. They are only slightly different looking, which you can attribute to small differences in the code. So your case is that CryTek, a developer that started out working exclusively to showcase display technology for NVIDIA, wouldn't be able to use the latest features of DX10 if they existed? Why did they pretend that DX10 had extra features which ended up working just fine(and faster) in DX9?
