- Rikkochet, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19Don't call him a retard, that's disrespectful to people with severe developmental and cognitive abilities who aren't as retarded as this guy! Er.
- MikeOSX, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16@ SonnyBonds
Who the hell is going to want to buy a computer with no hard drive? Retard! - 6502programmer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Even though SonnyBonds chose to do so in an immature fashion, his advice of "Take out the hard drive." is extremely sound. If the recipient of your computer can't deal with it, point them in the direction of any number of companies that will supply them with cheap hard drives.
- Cbeck527, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12^ No
- zcat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Bah, zero-wipe it (use DBAN or similar, or any live CD can "cat /dev/zero > /dev/hda") then reinstall the OS. Takes about an hour if you still have the original recovery and driver CD's. Then install avg free and let it run overnight to pick up it's own updates.
No amount of "windows washing" and "registry cleaning" and "virus scanning" is going to get it this clean, this fast. - chrono13, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9"she will call me at least once a month when something breaks..."

"JstWnnaHveFuN08: do you think i should call a guy friend and talk to him about my problems? or will he not care?
Thilo: Here's how it works: if a guy helps you with your problems, you're obligated to give him a blowjob.
JstWnnaHveFuN08: lol thanks that cheered me up
Thilo: No problem. That'll be one blowjob please."
Classic Bash solves your problem. - MikeOSX, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11um...because it has nothing to do with the damn article?
- chrono13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The best hard drive wipe is Darik's Boot and Nuke (DBAN): http://dban.sourceforge.net/
Which is commonly used from the Ultimate Boot CD: http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/ which contains DBAN and dozens of other useful tools.
For individual files, or while the OS is still loaded, there are tons of great free options. The smallest and simplest is probably WIPE, also Free and Open Source: http://wipe.sourceforge.net/
Good list here: http://www.thefreecountry.com/security/securedelete.shtml - pinky24, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8stop spamming digg
- smb3d, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8You guys do know theres a second page to the article that talks about cordless mice right? MoneyShots comment was on topic.
- wvdavis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4As per Informationweek.com, "Simson Garfinkel, a postdoctoral fellow at the Harvard's Center for Research on Computation and Society, has been buying used hard drives on eBay since 2001, then analyzing the data he finds on some of the devices.
Of the 236 drives Garfinkel bought, 7 contained more than 300 recoverable credit card numbers; one from had more than 11,000 unique account numbers that he could retrieve.
That's because only 19 percent of drives he acquired had been wiped clean. The majority of previous owners had either not touched the drives or had only run the DOS commands FDISK and FORMAT, which actually leave data on the drive so users with simple diagnostic tools can read the information."

- MikeOSX, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I think you're missing the point of the article. It wasn't compairing mouse's, it was just suggesting what to do when you get rid of it. Why the hell would you purchase a $100 mouse, just to add it to a pc that you are going to are going to sell?
- MikeOSX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@ 6502programmer
Okie, first of all, it's already an old ass PC. Now, you have to find a buyer that doesn't care that there is no hard drive. Good luck with that scenario! - linuxwarz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dban is what should be used, the OS should be fully erased. There is not really a sound solution to keep you safe once you have broken in the OS. besides, I would not want your old junk on the computer, I'd want a fresh install for maximum performance.
- tony134340, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That was lame. Common sense other than wiping the drive and Diggers would already know this. Also there's free alternatives to WindowsWasher which are as good or arguably better.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2u r DUMB
- Phil246, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1/dev/random might be a bit better, with multiple cycles
- rrunboy12, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2what are some good free alternatives? (in case I ever need to do this)
- Johnpaine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda
- spudnic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1That Active@ Kill Disk Hard Drive Eraser could be useful, I always used to install and un-install a tonne of games to make sure the drive had no recoverable private data on
- Johnpaine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0or...maxblast free bootable cd utilities and write 0s to the drive
- liuite, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1whatever you do, make sure the recipient knows that it doesn't come with free lifetime warranty from you...I gave a friend my old PC, and she will call me at least once a month when something breaks...or maybe i should have loaded Ubuntu.
upgrade the memory..... low density pc100 ram is more expensive than pc3200. I did find some on pricewatch 2x256MB for about $50 which is as cheap as you will find. - wvdavis, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3@ SonnyBonds - Dick!
- DaveTheBrave, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0The only guaranteed method of wiping a hard drive is to destroy it. No amount of wiping, formatting, fdisk, whatever will EVER completely erase that data. If someone is determined enough, they will mine that data.
Best practice is to never give your hard drives up. Or any other media for that matter (usb drives, sd/compact flash cards, etc). - MoneyShot, on 10/12/2007, -10/+6Man, I've got better things to do with my time then argue about mouses (mice?). But this article was about three completely different topics (as indicated in the Digg summary). I opted to comment about the mouse part--page 3 of the article--because I actually just bought a new one.
What gets modded up or down around here is so arbitrary sometimes. - MikeOSX, on 10/12/2007, -11/+5You can still get data off of a drive that has been reformatted. The best option is to use a software application that writes all 1's and 0's over all the data on teh hard drive, as mentioned in the article. At work here, we use a app called Wipe Drive; it allows you to write over the data something like 30 times.
The mac also has one built in. Get a mac... ;x - MoneyShot, on 10/12/2007, -12/+5Uh, reread either the damn blurb or the damn article.
- MoneyShot, on 10/12/2007, -12/+4... and I'm getting dugg now because?
- mortigon, on 10/12/2007, -8/+0just reformat
- MoneyShot, on 10/12/2007, -14/+4While "best mouse" is subjective, I highly recommend Logitech's MX Revolution. It has a weighted scroll wheel that either spins freely or advances a notch at a time, depending on what application currently has focus in Windows (I dont' know about Mac support). It really saves time when you have to scroll through thousands of lines of code at a time.
The downside? It's $100. :-( Worth it though. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -111/+4Take out the hard drive.
...
That is all
