The marketing guys probably already have thought out the statistics of how many returns they will get, based on disposable camera sales, adjusting for the higher price of this unit.
I don't think hackers will be a significant impact on overall sales. I mean, look around at the average person on the street, he/she is not gonna hack this thing. The true hackers will do it because it can be done, not to save money on a 'real' camcorder. Now, if you made an easy to use system that did not involve opening the case, soldering, re-flashing the camera, installing 5 different applications and drivers on your computer, creating a special one-off cable, and installing a DVD burner, then maybe they would go after you legally, because it sounds an awful lot like the machine CVS use in the stores.
If there appears to be a serious dent in the cash revenue from this unit due to hacking, they will probably just ask the manufacture to alter the main board slightly for the next lot they produce, and keep doing that as new hacks are developed. Kind of like DSS descrambling. - Cam_86, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They should have held off on releasing this info... Wait until the camera's have hit more stores. If the company that makes them finds out 1/20 of the camcorders wont be returned, cause of hackers, they might not expand the item into new markets... or worse yet amp the price up to compensate for the lost ones.
- FunkyGuy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0well they didnt crack/hack the hardware on it yet, or the software, its just a long post about people discussing ideas and showing off pictures. But there is certianly alot of knowledge being posted around with this camera in mind hah.
