- codemonkey420, on 10/12/2007, -8/+48@23r17i05o42n: So, someone that found a new device to be good must be being paid off? By that logic, you posting a comment shows that your being paid by digg to keep traffic levels up and to test the thumb-down feature...
CodeMonkey - codemonkey420, on 10/12/2007, -7/+35I'm not an iPod fanboy, but one of my draws to the ipod nano was its nice compact size and flash memory. However, if this little device shows its true colors as a "better" player I have no problem dropping the apple product line to move onto the better product.
However, the key to it all, I'm not going to toss the Nano and get a Zune "just because." Either my ipod is going to have to die or become old and crusty. It's still in good shape and provides all my needs so my "next-generation" purchase will come when I'm ready to upgrade. That is when the Zune could potentially get my service.
Given that, Apple's best form of attack right now, I'd think, would be to flood the market with iPods before the Zune makes its appearance. That will cause consumers to hold out for the need to purchase another player. That is, unless you can provide a new functionality that is so cool and so much needed that you'd drop your current new device (ebay it) and buy a Zune.
I don't see any Zune features that would make me drop my ipod for the new product line yet. If it could sync my podcasts and playlists wirelessly from anywhere in my house I'd consider that a need to have feature (maybe not enough to upgrade now, but to make my upgrade pattern faster).
CodeMonkey - darthsnoopy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+30I dont think the zune is in the market to compete against the nano....more the 60gig video ipods. For nano competitors I'd look to iriver, creative, etc.
- mkoby, on 10/12/2007, -3/+23The only way the Zune is going to compete with the iPod is if they an accessories market that's of considerable size. That's one of the reasons the iPod has done so well, no other player on the market (except for maybe the Creative players) has the accessories market that the iPod does.
For instance, I have an Alpine system in my car with the full speed iPod integration, giving me around 5000 songs at my fingertips. All accessible from the head unit.
Also, I have a LARGE collection of music and require iTune's smart playlists to manage what goes on my iPod. The WMP Auto-Playlists just doesn't give me the same level of control that iTunes Smart Playlists do. - chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -9/+29My 3rd gen has been going strong for 2.5 years now. I don't get why people go through iPods so quickly, if you drop it or misuse it- then it's going to break. If you take care of it, they last for a long time.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22You people actually buy new iterations of the same electronics product? At $300 a pop? What the ***** kind of wasteful spending is that?
"Look, it's 1 inch smaller now! Buy it again!" - codemonkey420, on 10/12/2007, -3/+21I believe it wraps the stuff, even if it isn't DRM. I.e. if I give you my album it will DRM it on your device with the same rules as a true DRM.
This gets around people using illegal or non-DRMed mp3's that are by real publishers from being shared indefinitely.
CodeMonkey - twiz514, on 10/12/2007, -7/+21@ 23r17i05o42n:
Oh, I get it! They have one that is brown! And ***** is brown! How funny!
Oh wait, you're a douchebag. - codemonkey420, on 10/12/2007, -5/+19Um, no. I know him personally, and he's not a microsoft employee. However, I find it funny that you'd say that. Now I know just how rumors start towards some of these big companies. The fact that he's a gamer that happened to get a chance to go to a conference (and was pretty excited about it) yet is being rumored to be some inside microsoft guy... makes me literally laugh out loud.
Oh well, conspiracy theory is big on digg.
CodeMonkey - CrankyMcGuy, on 10/12/2007, -8/+21"I found myself unable to stop stroking the device, so much that the demo assistant asked me to put it down."
I stopped reading one paragraph in. I like my iPod mini and shuffle, but if I was reading an Apple fanboy describe the iPod in this way I would feel just as unclean.
Gleah....I need a shower. - oldtimegamer, on 10/12/2007, -10/+23I actually want to get away from the iPod. After my 4th one, I'm just sick of them always breaking on me. I'm not necessary going to get a Zune, but i'm just happy there are finally some other good options out there. The Zen is looking pretty sweet too. Xvid anyone?
- Puzzled, on 10/12/2007, -24/+36Nice, I'm really looking forward to this thing. Now I just have to be able to afford it.
- Jhorra, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13@Ninjab3ar
He said the entire process took 20 seconds, I assume he is including in that the time to select and send as well as the other person accepting. The actual song transfer may very well have only taken 7 seconds. - aboutblank, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15What I really want to know is if the 3 play/3 day limitation applies to music which is NOT DRM wrapped. Even if it does apply, I would still buy one if a firmware hack existed to remove the DRM.
- Ninjab3ar, on 10/12/2007, -13/+23"It took less than 20 seconds to send the whole song which included album art. "
didnt microsoft say 7 seconds for a song? and yes, i know that 7 is less than 20, but the author would have said less that 10 seconds if that was the case. - oldtimegamer, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15I write for 2old2play and can tell you right now they have absolutely nothing to do with MS. I can also tell you that the author doesn't work for MS and there is no conspiracy here. He simply had the chance to check one out and gave his opinion. Just because you don't like it, doesn't mean it was written by MS.
- Ninjab3ar, on 10/12/2007, -6/+15thats right, my 4th gen is still working fine, with a decent battery life to boot! i still bought a 5g ipod because theyre just so darn cool.
- codemonkey420, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10@ariza: As the news poster I can tell you those pic's are from microsofts press kit, I put them in there myself. They're the highest resolution ones I could get. Sorry, no "viral marketing" - just putting in some photo's for his review.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9But MS called it chocolate.
- shosterman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I agree with your "market saturation" point. I have an iPod, but I always really like the Zune. Of course I'm not going to buy one because I don't have the money nor really the need for a second player.
The Zune will have to appeal to this in the market for a new or updated portable media player. Then again, there is another problem with that (and I'm going to make a generalization here). It's my assumption here that most all "tech" people or those in the know already have an iPod. Those -not- familiar with media players, ie. parents and grandparents shopping for relatives might pick the iPod over the Zune for only the sake of hearing it mentioned before.
I hope that makes sense I'm too tired to edit it. - saralk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10The 3 play/3 days thing only applies to music which has DRM on it already http://www.zuneinsider.com/2006/09/zune_and_drm_or.html
- sokz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Oh *****, a nice review for a Microsoft product! Quick everyone start bashing it. I bet people will complain about the length of time to transfer songs and the 3 play limitation for the receiver... I think all of those are good and fine - plus the ipod does not even have a similar feature (unless I'm living in a cave...)...
I kind of want one, I thought it was looking nice.. we'll see. - SPThom, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11Looks like Microsoft has actually done a respectable job in terms of product design. I worry that now, whenever Apple rolls out a much-needed UI update for the iPod, the move will risk getting called a Zune ripoff, because some of the Zune's niceties (i.e. full-screen album art), albeit simple, are bound to show up in a new iTunes UI.
I agree--I look forward to seeing Apple's response. - rebrad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Looks good. My 2 YO iPod's battery is on it's last legs and I can barely read the scratchy screen. Fortunately I haven't spent much money on the DRM'd iTunes offerings so I don't have a problem moving to a another platform. It's also refreshing to see something on Digg that is not an over-hyped Apple product. I used to think that Apple made great products but with all the problems with the new Intel Macs that Apple buries and the latest virus ladden iPods I have to wonder. I gave up on Sony and Apple is not a must buy for me anymore. I think I'll look at the Zune without the Apple colored filter that many on Digg seem to have here.
- whisk3rs, on 10/12/2007, -2/+923r17i05o42n: that's the third retarded, offtopic comment I see from you in less than 14 hours.
http://digg.com/userblock/638421 - saralk, on 10/12/2007, -7/+14I think Microsoft is on to a gold mine here. If the Zune becomes popular, say >10% market share, then they could potentially license out the Zune sharing technology.
Imagine you are on a bus, and you see an advert for a new album by your favourite band. In the corner you see a little Zune logo, you turn on your Zune and then you get invited to receive the whole album. 30 seconds later you are listening to the album, when you've listened to it 3 times, and the file is locked, you go on the Zune Marketplace, and buy the album. - bluechocobo42, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Source? I have not heard of this 30 second limit to song transfer. From all the information I have seen, you can transfer the entire song.
Perhaps you misread the article where it said that it took about 30 seconds to transfer a complete song, including album art? - jo42, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8> The ‘skin’ of the Zune was a ‘rubberized’ material that had a smooth seductive feel to it. I found myself unable to stop stroking the device,
First we had people pecking away at Crackberrys, now we're going to have a bunch of pervs stroking their Zune's.
The wonders of technology will never cease... - shosterman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7If you are referring to why this author got one and others did not, he wasn't so lucky. His review came from a hands-on preview at a Microsoft Campus.
- nogami, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I don't have much time for the "Bonus DRM with every song" that MS uses. It should NOT wrap songs that are already on the device without DRM.
It's not up to manufacturers to police what users are doing - stick to making hardware, and let the courts duke it out with people who use the technology for things that "infringe upon copyrights". - codemonkey420, on 10/12/2007, -8/+13I've never had a problem with the ipod barring a few freezes (once I was unable to power it off without doing a hard reboot). But it's never up and broke (yet)
- Lynn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5You are wrong. You get the FULL song. You can play it 3 times or for 3 days.
- yensed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Until the stupid 3/3 DRM is hacked or removed, I will not be getting one.. Microsoft doesn't have the right to DRM Creative Commons and Free Podcasts/Music/Other Media that I want to share. I hope they get sued and forced to remove that stupid "feature".. If the Music is already DRM'd because you purchased it that way, then the 3/3 thing isn't such a bad idea.
- archer75, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6All they did was put new DRM on this so you have to use thier own music store with this device.
This is absolutely no different than what apple does. Thier DRM and thier device and they won't let music from any other store on it. - saralk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5When I said 30 seconds, I was reffering to the time it took to transfer an album
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5The link worked a treat whisk3rs :)
- sparrowkc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5edit: Saralk beat me.
I think I remember Microsoft saying that un-DRM'ed files would remain that way, even through transfers. - codemonkey420, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5The name was changed to protect the gamer's tag and such (i.e. he used his ms gamertag...and didn't want an ass ton of pm's). Sorry. (you can find the authors name if you search through enough of the comments above)
- ravenmuffin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Does it mount as a device though?
When the iPod came out in 2001 it was a Mac-only product. However, Windows (and Linux) users quickly found ways to use it, as it still mounted as an external device using the HFS file system which MediaFour could read, and all that was needed was a program to interpret the catalog index.
I'd be willing to bet you could do the same with a Zune, if you really wanted to use it on your Mac. - acomj, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10ha haha ahhaahaa
NO.
It won't even work on a mac - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9Stop dropping it.
- macko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3That's exactly what it does. The 3 days 3 plays DRM is only applied to protected songs.
http://www.zuneinsider.com/2006/09/zune_and_drm_or.html - dehnomac, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4For my use...whoever has the BOOKMARK feature will get my $.
- codemonkey420, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6@shosterman: yes, he didn't have one handed to him. He was given the chance at a show. In the best setting, you want to walk to your mailbox or get a ring on the door at home with a box containing a shiny zune to review.
That would be nice.
CodeMonkey - shadownight, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The article was a little too "zuny" for me, but hey, maybe Zunes are really that good. As the author says: I'm secretly hoping for Apple's answer... Competition is only good for consumers, and it'll push Apple and Microsoft do outdo each other. Better products for us!
- superkendall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Did you see the insert picture of the Brown Zune in the article? I kind of thought the color was a bad idea, but it's Brown with Tan pinstriping and really looks quite a bit uglier than I was first thinking it would.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Whats wrong with MS?
M$ just shows that the poster is an immature little apple whore, but MS is completely acceptable!
Even MS use the 'MS' abbreviation, just look at MSDOS or MS Works/Office (the earlier ones). - ravenmuffin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2> why doesn't diggnation get a zune
They will. Microsoft has earmarked $100 million for a grassroots advertising campaign.
You can bet that they're going to go after the popular tech podcast market.
It was already shown on GeekBrief TV (even though Cali isn't really interested because she's a Mac gal and can't use it.) - Escamillo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7sjbdalla, you sound like just another iPod fanboy that's scared too death of Zune.
- oldtimegamer, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Dear lord. Like I stated I'm my other reply, I write for 2old2play and can tell you right now they have absolutely nothing to do with MS. I can also tell you that the author doesn't work for MS and there is no conspiracy here. He simply had the chance to check one out and gave his opinion. He not required to make a comparison to the iPOD just as he didn't compare it to a Zen or any other MP3 player. Its just a review.
