- Riatsala, on 04/01/2009, -3/+17Android is brilliant, which is what makes this so believable. Probably a joke but it wouldn't surprise me if it actually happened.
- KimNovak, on 04/01/2009, -2/+14"..Confirms Considering.."
so they confirmed they aren't sure.. - LonesomeFighter, on 04/01/2009, -1/+9well that's one way of getting hired again...
- harvinator24, on 04/01/2009, -2/+9If Apple plans on releasing the supposed "10'' netbook" they better hurry the hell up.
- moduc, on 04/01/2009, -2/+8Money game with Microsoft.
I don't believe it until I see it. - benderillo, on 04/01/2009, -0/+5Like your comment?
- grbruner, on 04/01/2009, -0/+5"Mar 31, 2009 10:23 pm"
If the article time adjusts for time zones, that is awesome.
I'm in CA and you are in Vermont so the 3 hour difference fits. - redrabbit, on 04/01/2009, -1/+5Can someone more knowledgeable of things tech-related tell me why HP can't use Ubuntu with its netbooks? It's prettier, and since netbooks are becoming more powerful every year, it's not like we need a simpler OS as time goes by.
- deslock, on 04/01/2009, -0/+4The problem is cost. If the rumored tablet from Apple still costs more than $500... they'll miss the market entirely.
I'm betting they'll make a new tablet based on the Touch OS for a reasonable price... except that the limited document management support in the OS makes it miss on the netbook market too.
I'm thinking they can't win here. We'll see though. Apple consumers seem to be very forgiving in order to adopt a new apple technology right now. - dext3r, on 04/01/2009, -0/+4Considering Android isn't developed with a single hardware specification in mind, I'm pretty sure it will be easy to scale stuff up to larger screens.
- popltree2, on 04/01/2009, -1/+5Epson? When did they start making computers?
- grbruner, on 04/01/2009, -4/+7Nope. But the possibility that HP will be coming out with an Android run Netbook is still relatively low at this point. Consumers (most) tend to stick with that they know (windows) unless they have some huge motivation to switch.
When netbooks first came you they were all on alternate operating systems. Now, it is easier to find windows run netbooks than the original. From a performance standpoint, the need to run a less demanding operating system is becoming dated very quickly. - dizzythegreat, on 04/01/2009, -1/+4No, this is Twitter. Nobody here has seen Reddit.
- MWeather, on 04/01/2009, -0/+3Yeah, because they laid everyone off and moved overseas long ago.
- deslock, on 04/01/2009, -0/+3You can't discount the momentum factor.
Android has a thriving dev community and an incredibly fast growing app market. Basically, HP and others see this as having a potential free OS with the momentum of the iphone (not quite). There is a pretty critical time window in which Android could take off and dominate the market.
I recently saw that Nvidia has an HD movie playing Android netbook running in order to prove how awesome their new chips are. - fabkebab, on 04/01/2009, -0/+3I like Android from what I have seen, but isnt the OS/UI all configured for making the most use of a tiny screen? I ran the developer examples, and the UI seems very basic for anything larger than a small window-
Can an expert enlighten me on how it would look/work on a larger screen? (link?)
Sorry to bring the overall tone of the conversation to a semi-nerdy level from the usual light-hearted, semi-informed banter! - cyrusuncc, on 04/01/2009, -1/+4Interesting idea, but not sure how useful this is... i mean you already have a plethora of applications for linux/windows...
- dext3r, on 04/01/2009, -1/+4I'm assuming you can subclass all that ***** and make UI elements for bigger screens...
- skyshock1, on 04/01/2009, -0/+3Apple was formed today in 1976. Just sayin'.
- whiledo, on 04/01/2009, -1/+4Considering that slashdot started posting articles last night for April Fools, I wouldn't assume anything.
I'm boycotting slashdot today because of the whole stupidity. April Fools jokes are funny to me when there are one or two, not when the entirety of the site is taken over by it. At least digg still has a lot of non-AF stories. - quarando, on 04/01/2009, -0/+3HP sells netbooks with their own customized Linux. Dell on the other hand does sell Ubuntu netbooks. You can find them on their websites. The above reply is incorrect, HP, Dell and Asus have all stated publicly their there is no significant difference in return rates on Windows vs Linux netbooks. There was a spokesmen for MSI(I believe) that claimed a high return rate of linux netbooks but later walked back his statement. This is simply Redmond spin.
HP certainly could put Ubuntu on their netbooks, but apparently they think they can do Linux better. - woody1987, on 04/01/2009, -0/+3they make printers, as do HP
- Beatmiser, on 04/01/2009, -0/+3Much as I love to see it I don't think they are going to release one- the Air is sort of their 'netbook' niche and an Apple standard netbook would really cut into that. However the rumored tablet style netbook might be original enough that it would provide them a market foothold if they ever really went that route.
- Stomper, on 04/01/2009, -1/+3Can you provide a link to prove your statement ? Only MSI has claimed to have a problem and they say 4x not 7x. Dell says their return rate on Mini's with Linux is about the same as those loaded with Windows. Neither HP nor ASUS seem to be having problems as they have not announced one way or the other and continue to ship system with Linux.
- drstock, on 04/01/2009, -2/+4Article is from March 31, not April 1.
- Rugrash, on 04/01/2009, -0/+2I'm still here and it STILL sucks. We just took a 5% pay cut and our fearless leader Mark Turd took a 20% cut which is something like $300,000.00 less base pay but I'm sure he'll make it up with millions worth of bonuses. Beyond that, HP has lost a lot of credibility and I will NOT ever recommend HP products to family, friends nor enemies. They don't even give employee discounts worth a $hit anyway. (sorry for the rant!)
- diggimator, on 04/03/2009, -0/+2We are 100% sure that we are unsure.
- Skurt, on 04/01/2009, -0/+2I would normally edit my post, but because DIGG has a crappy error on links in an edited post
http://www.linux-netbook.com/video/asus-and-hp-net ... - Elranzer, on 04/01/2009, -1/+3redrabbit's question wasn't why HP wasn't using Ubuntu opver Windows. He was asking why they're considering Android over Ubuntu.
- vitriolix, on 04/01/2009, -0/+2The Android SDK is built from the ground up to support multiple screen sizes very easily. That said, I bet all the crap apps you don't care about won't work well, but the developers of the good apps will have an easy time adding support for netbooks.
- deslock, on 04/01/2009, -0/+2No the desktop on the G1 is scrollable (multiple screens wide) and allows widgets, etc. It's pretty clear it can easily be expanded to a larger screen.
It's the Apps they have in the market that will be strange on big screens. People create menus and such assuming small text on a small screen that will look... loney on a big one.
But I'll bet that can be worked around. - grbruner, on 04/01/2009, -2/+4@Elranzer
If you go to TigerDirect you will see 55 Windows netbooks and 3 linux based netbooks.
See my 2nd paragraph. - Elranzer, on 04/01/2009, -0/+2I know everyone is Digging down the "***** HP" comments but they're valid. They're laying of the majority of their US workers and heading towards an all-Chinese operations, except for the upper management of course. It's not just for the tech support either, all of their manufacturing/design is headed to China too.
- avalokiteshvara, on 04/01/2009, -2/+4My policy is to not believe ANYTHING that is posted ANYWHERE on April Fools.
- CoreyTamas, on 04/01/2009, -1/+2Android isn't quite ready for prime time, and HP is only "considering". That having been said, if they get their ducks in a row this could be a really good idea... and if it succeeds, it's a move that will be repeated.
Perhaps Android's future is to move away from mobiles and be repurposed for Netbooks. - inactive, on 04/02/2009, -0/+1Linux is a lot more resource efficient than XP.
Xubuntu is intended for users with less-powerful computers, or those that require a highly efficient desktop environment on faster systems.
http://www.ubuntu.com/products/whatisubuntu/xubunt ... - inactive, on 04/02/2009, -0/+1"Linux netbooks have a high return rate" is a MYTH!
Asus and Dell say that netbook return-rates are low, and that the number of Linux returns is comparable to the number of Windows XP returns. There has been only one case of significant Linux returns, with MSI, who admits that they had their own internal QA issues.
Asus CEO Jerry Shen said, "I think the return rate for the Eee PCs are low, and I believe the Linux and Windows have similar return rates"...
http://blog.laptopmag.com/asus-ceo-reveals-eee-pc- ... - Skurt, on 04/01/2009, -2/+3Simpsons did it!
http://venturebeat.com/2009/01/01/android-netbooks ...
Well Venturebeat anyway... - carlosos, on 04/01/2009, -1/+2If HP and Dell have too low profit margins than they can just increase the price and let asus and acer get a bigger market share of the netbooks.
- drstock, on 04/01/2009, -1/+2"Mar 31, 2009 10:23 pm" here too.
- fabkebab, on 04/01/2009, -1/+2Yeah - I know the "desktop" can be shifted right or left, but it still isnt much "real estate" , and (if I understand it rightly) things like menus are designed to take up the whole screen (which I am guessing is what you are saying here)
- Elranzer, on 04/01/2009, -1/+2I heard you can install NetBSD on an Epson printer, actually.
- Elranzer, on 04/01/2009, -2/+3"Consumers (most) tend to stick with that they know (windows) unless they have some huge motivation to switch."
Kinda doesn't explain why there's more Linux netbooks sold out there... (Ubuntu/Dell, Acer/Xandros, etc) - drstock, on 04/01/2009, -1/+2HP is actually getting out of the linux netbook market in europe and is focusing more on Windows is the states. Their return rate on linux netbooks is 30% (internal numbers).
I also know that this article is no April fools joke, they're aiming at introducing an android netbook in the near future. - quarando, on 04/01/2009, -3/+4This is great news, the more choices we have the better. Right now most netbooks offer a linux option, but I have read that MS is pushing manufacturers hard to eliminate this choice when Windows 7 is released. As somebody who has no interest in a Windows 7 netbook, an android option would be very welcome. I also hope they keep offering Ubuntu, but I am a bit pessimistic about this as we have seen MS strong arm manufacturers to limit competition too often.
- quarando, on 04/01/2009, -0/+130% is quite high. If this number is indeed accurate I think it points to either a failure on HP's part to communicate to netbook users that a linux netbook doesn't come with windows. The other possibility is that HP's linux version just isn't very useful (I have never used it).
Do you happen to know if Dell's Ubuntu netbooks do better than the HP linux netbooks?
I think an Android netbook would be very cool, I hope you are right and this Android netbook isn't just a game HP is playing with MS. - inactive, on 04/01/2009, -2/+3my hp netbook came with xp but still feels extremely sluggish when i need to quickly boot, connect, check for something (like the location of the next bus) and put it on standby
i hope whatever theyre working on will speed it up immensely because the speed is not acceptable right now - tolerant, on 04/01/2009, -0/+1Title is wrong. It should be "HP considering Android as tactic to reduce Microsoft license fees".
