- EatingPie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10You've got a long wait ahead of you.
There are NO HD-DVD writers yet, and may never be. They've been announced, delayed, and un-announced.
Blu-Ray Recordable (BD-R/BD-RE), however, was built right into the Blu-Ray spec, which was one of its strenghs (the first Blu-Ray players were recorders in Japan about 5 years ago now -- yes, 5 years). That's why it only took a few months from launch to get the first BD-R drives into computers.
-Pie - aywwts4, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12That was a rumor, it was never confirmed, officially denied, and is likely incorrect.
- rieuwa, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10Dear HP,
Get my printer driver out for Vista (1 year old 300€ printer), then we'll talk new computers.
Many Thanks for your understanding.
/irritation - UrbanPug, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7so is "digital cable tuner" a cablecard device? I wouldnt mind getting a cablecard vista box.
- nailer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5They're not companies, they're industry groups. And their licensing agreements don't currently prevent manufacturers from supporting rival formats. Hybrid HD DVD and Blu-Ray disc drives and players are nothing new. That said, Sony have previously called hybrid drives 'an expensive way to play Universal discs'.
Slightly off topic, anyone notice how people who praise HP are being modded down past zero?
If you don't agree that their machines are stable, or that the industrial design on the new Pavillions is rather sexy, reply. Don't silence others! - thesimplefix, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Call me when they install writers for each!
- KernelPanic, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Sorry, I'm not dropping $1000 for an optical drive. $100 maybe… When the optical drive costs as much as a midrange workstation there's a problem. I understand the whole supply and demand side but they still seem like they are gouging the public while they can.
KP - counterstriker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4and is that why blu ray is dong so well in America?
- undersky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3i have a new HP and i like it. i bought the cheap version w/ amd x2 (dual core) and lots ram and HD. then i added graphic card and tv card myself. ended up w/ a terrific machine!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5They used to ALL suck (I should know, I sold them for a few years) but many of the new models are damn good and only a little bit *****.
I especially like some of their new notebooks. - pollardito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2yes, it's an ATI TV Wonder Digital Cable Tuner with CableCard support: http://ati.amd.com/products/tvwonderdigital/index.html
do they really have cablecards available in the wild yet? - theNazz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I just bought a new HP core 2 duo 6300 PC and an add on 8800gts for under $1000. I am very satisfied with it. I wasn't expecting much from a HP prebuilt, but after doing several Tivo to DVD rips and playing my newer games, I don't regret my purchase at all.
- wageslaven, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wel, according to this article, they have some of the best features, they've always had good prices. And, they've got terrific industrial design. What are -you- talking about?
- nailer, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Luckily they didn't do a Notebook yet, as I'm awaiting delivery of one and have a fledgling HD-DVD collection.
I've never really liked HP stuff, but their Pavillion laptops are better looking than Apple's (kudos to whoever their industrial designer is) and offer a bigger screen for about 500 (Australian) bucks less (note, Apple in the UK, Australia or anywhere that's not the US is significantly more expensive).
They work great with Linux too. - disciple83, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5With an HP computer, you are getting a stable machine. Granted, it isn't bleeding edge, and it won't get you a high PCMark or 3DMark score, but the machines run very well. I have always stood by HP products, even when it wasn't so cool to do that since they have been "walmart" computers for a while. The reason I have an HP now is because 4-5 years ago when the AMD64 chips first came out, HP didn't adopt them when I wanted one, so I built my own.
But I have never had a problem with the their tech support, come to think of it, I have never actually had to call tech support, so nevermind. And when I upgrade again, now that they are putting the nVidia 8 series in their machines, I will definitely pick HP over Dell anyday, if I don't build my own again first. - DaveBG, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Thumbs up for Blu-ray from me.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2hp can't build a decent pc, i have no idea how they would support a drive like this.
- counterstriker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The procrastinators answer.....................E-VEN-TUA-LLY!
- wageslaven, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is BLEEDING edge technology. What are you talking about 'gouging'?
- undersky, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I like my HP because how cheap it was when I bought it. For $800 I got AMD 3800+ dual core, dvd-rw and cd-rom (light scribe too), media card readers, fire wire, media center, 1GB ram, 250GB HD. Then I bought a ATI 800XT and TV card for DVR. Although it came w/ bloatware and no original OS disk (it actually asks me to burn 4 DVD worth of restoration disk because HP is so cheap to ship me one! or I will be out of luck if the system died one day), XP is stable that for over a year I don't need to reformat or anything. It's still fast and reliable. I never got BSOD except when I play Battlefield, which has to do w/ the ***** ATI driver...anyway, it's pretty reliable and I never called tech support once.
- counterstriker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I'm guessin you bough straight from HP, right?
- wageslaven, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Who in their right mind would say "HP machines arent stable"? HP sells most of its machines to world-class enterprises. Not home-users types, if HP boxes are _anything_ they are stable.
@nailer What planet are these people from? Its the Apple fanboy-ism @ work I'd gather. - Verdanic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@ counterstriker
I think you need to research drivers a little bit more. - chris4404, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Do think before you type?
Obviously your statement is false or HDDVD would have tried up by now and Tier 1 PC distributors such as HP wouldn't waste their time with dead technology. - rockrapdude, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Now if the PS3 would add that kind of a hybrid drive then they would be in the business.HP FTW!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Yeah, they're one hell of a lot pricier. Here in Oz even Dell PCs are hideously expensive.
- qazyhoods, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1and both competing companies agreed to this?!
- schoate09, on 10/12/2007, -8/+6Are you insane? HD-DVD is a steaming pile of crap, with old rehases. All the good new releases go to Blu-ray. This is a LOT different than betamax or UMD.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4I dont know if I would want to buy another hp, even if it did have these new drives. Anyone else not satisfied with HP?
- Quag, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Horrible service for 2 years on a laptop, we were so frustrated with their CS support, and finally after 4 processors, they've replaced it with a top of the line equivalent. It came loaded with HD DVD drive and everything, but even after all that, it's tempting to sell the damn thing due to the future headache that may occur.
- drayzin, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Does anyone really need a HD-DVD or Blu-Ray drive or player? The price for not only the hardware, but the discs themselves are ridiculous. Is it really worth it to fork over hundreds of dollars for something that won't be in widespread usage for another 3-4 years?
- mywhitenoise, on 10/12/2007, -10/+7I'll wait for them to be the new standard first, then I'll buy the Apple version.
- Lane, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3this blows me away, the drive listed is a X4 burner which in and of itself is worth $550. somehow or another i have a feeling you wont be getting your money's worth.
- Quellman, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1Like stated: this sure doesn't help decide which will be the standard.
I wonder if HP's customer service will follow the same first to market strategy with their customer service. Not only can your calls be forwarded to India, but if you want, you can also speak to someone in Uganda. - aanhorn, on 10/12/2007, -10/+4Except for the fact that HD-DVD is a pile of crap and was destined to lose since before it was released?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1well i mean, ur name IS UrbanPug, so to answer your question: I dont know.
- azenone, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1I shall be waiting to reward your genius, or to have you beheaded for terminal stupidity! I have spoken.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1diggdown sorry reposted same comment
- counterstriker, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1your damn right! I have this HP a1430n Pavillion PC and its sucks, that is before I upgraded a bunch of parts of it. The software they bundeled the PC with really sucks. The worst software they bundeled with my computer would have to be the audio drivers made by realtek (aka realhardgaytek). These audio drivers lack a decent plug and play functionality so whenever I plug in a headset or mic into the front of it. I always have to fiddle with the settings or the mic will totally not work and the headset will always be to loud. The drivers are also built into the OS(I think) so I can't remove them or I will lose all of the sound jacks on the front of my comp!
Needless to say I will be building my own comp next time I have to buy one - hella81, on 10/12/2007, -17/+5Too bad HP computers blow.
- Krekko, on 10/12/2007, -20/+3Interesting! Walmart is also offering by (if i remember correctly) Christmas this year a cheap HD-DVD player. Whats cheap i do not know, but perhaps the transition between regular and High-Def wont be too long.
