- Phocion55, on 01/05/2008, -30/+211Congrats to Sony on finally having a winning format.
15th time's a charm? - OneOfTheElect, on 01/05/2008, -15/+196Is this the end of the war? I hope so, it was taking long enough
- BobCock, on 01/05/2008, -19/+162soooooooo, blu-ray wins?
- dieselstation, on 01/05/2008, -27/+152so let's get rid of all the blu-ray myths before the hd-dvd fanboys come in kicking and screaming.
1. Blu-Ray is Sony proprietary. Wrong.. Sony may have been a huge part in its development, but the Blu-Ray founders consists of Apple, Dell, HP, Hitachi, LG, Mitsubishi Electric, Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips, Samsung, Sharp, Sony, Sun Microsystems, TDK, Thomson, Twentieth Century Fox, Walt Disney, Warner Bros., etc..
2. Porn will dictate the Hi-Def winner. um.. no. Seriously.. when was the last time you bought porn on a disc?
3. Blu-Ray movies are expensive. Compared to HD-DVD? not really. You can find tons of titles for $20 or less on amazon.com
4. Blu-Ray players are expensive. Nope.. there are BR players out there for around $260. even the PS3 is only $399.
5. Blu-Ray movies use bad compression technology. Nope.. not anymore. The first few discs maybe.. but everything is encoded in in AVC and VC-1 now. Same codecs as HD-DVD.
6. HD-DVD name is easier to remember. Um.. yeah right.. Anyone who is interested in buying high definition content already know who the 2 main players are. Assuming that people who buy high-def tv's and movies get tripped up by something silly as the NAME of the format is just silly.
I'm sure there are way more reasons HD-DVD fanboys will come up for why HD-DVD is better.. but face it.. Blu-Ray MotherF'in WINS!!! - Burritoking924, on 01/05/2008, -12/+128Does it seem odd that I want to scream out "The war is over" around the house?
- Hitpoint, on 01/05/2008, -30/+139This format war was like VHS and Betamax, but this time the better format won.
- TheRealDj, on 01/05/2008, -9/+102I wonder how this will effect the big news from the 360 camp that they're supposed to give at CES. If they were going to have a 360 Ultimate with an HD-DVD player, I wonder if they'll pull it now with Warner going blu-ray and HD-DVD effectively being dead.
- superkendall, on 01/05/2008, -8/+97With the Warner shift Blu-Ray now holds 70% of all studio titles as exclusives. There is no way that people will buy into a format that lacks Disney, Pixar, Star Wars, the Matrix, Spider Man, Harry Potter, etc. etc. o matter how cheap the players. You could give away players now and people would simply use them as cheap upconverting HD-DVD players, waiting for Blu-Ray players to reach a price they like.
- andre321, on 01/05/2008, -1/+83My HDDVD/Betamax combo player begs to differ.
- inactive, on 01/05/2008, -19/+91This is very interesting. If Blu-ray wins, then Microsoft would cancel there HD-dvd add on and replace it with a Blu-ray add on. This means that Sony will profit from the Xbox 360 sales indirectly... oh, the irony.
- TurboBeard, on 01/05/2008, -9/+70The reason HD-DVD lost is because of the name. Blu-ray = 2 syllables. HD-DVD = 5.
- LetsGoHawks, on 01/05/2008, -10/+67The headline should be "HD-DVD camp craps its pants after Warner delivers sucker punch".
I doubt this will affect any Microsoft plans, but for any other company, who knows. It makes me wonder if there were some private meetings between the studios so they could end the war and start making money. - ramiro, on 01/05/2008, -5/+56So that is why the Toshiba HD DVD was dumped for $99 before Thanksgiving.
- KMartSheriff, on 01/05/2008, -1/+43I don't understand how PS3 couldn't count a player. I mean they play BD discs. How is that not a player!?
- inactive, on 01/05/2008, -7/+49"HD DVD players and PCs have outsold Blu-ray in the US market in 2007."
If you do not count the PS3's, then yes.
But Blu-ray DISKS have outsold HD-dvd DISKS. - CrimsonBlur, on 01/05/2008, -6/+47Have you ever heard of the Compact Disc? I think that format was pretty successful, developed by Sony and Philips. They also started the entire portable audio revolution with the Walkman and have introduced most of the leading camcorder formats and HDV formats.
- SfOwnsLa, on 01/05/2008, -7/+48They also had their hand in DVDs and CDs.
- Inox555, on 01/05/2008, -0/+39And let's not forget Sony developed the 3.5" floppy disk which had a pretty good run.
- superkendall, on 01/05/2008, -3/+41Return it - you can at least get store credit for it.
- HCviolence, on 01/05/2008, -11/+46This means Blu-ray wins. Until some other movie company declares HD-DVD exclusivity and then HD-DVD wins. Until Blu-Ray gets another movie company. Until the majority of the population switch back to betamax and hiss at people who mention hd disc players.
- estvir, on 01/05/2008, -3/+37If they made a Blu-Ray addon, which they've said they would consider if it became popular, they wouldn't be stabbing anyone in the back.
- mikemil828, on 01/05/2008, -9/+42Yeah, but good luck convincing the HD-DVD diehards otherwise
- makkaveli19, on 01/05/2008, -3/+34they don't own blu-ray either, its backed by 10+ companies which sony is one of.
- zonk3r, on 01/05/2008, -32/+63Umm... yay?
The format that has the most pound you in the ass DRM and isn't even a finalized spec wins created largely by Sony a company known for their customer appreciation by installing rootkits on people's computers and using the RIAA and MPAA to sue their customers for copying CD's and films. Yeah that sounds like a success all right.
The only advantage BRD has over HD-DVD is storage capacity and a complete ROM system for computer based burners. Admittedly that is significant but not insurmountable for HD-DVD to match...
I don't really see this as a success. All it does is create further division in the market and pisses off a lot of early adopters. Why people are picking sides is stupid to me. We should be demanding CHEAP dual format systems and let consumers choose what meets their needs for their particular use. Everyone wins in that scenario. - cpalmer74, on 01/05/2008, -5/+36I'd believe they are going back to tweak the powerpoints. Change some pie charts, change the fonts and end the slides on a different happy message. Save. Exit.
- cavie2002, on 01/05/2008, -29/+60ill still stick my good old dvd thank you very much
- solidsnake1298, on 01/05/2008, -1/+31Thats like asking "Other than capacity, how is Blu-ray and HD-DVD better then regular DVD's?"
Capacity is everything for digital media. Higher capacity means higher video bitrates, lossless HD audio, and more extras. Higher capacity also means higher density and the ability to achieve higher read throughput. - windohs, on 01/05/2008, -0/+28I'll stick with my good ol' Laserdisc
- WaltJay, on 01/05/2008, -4/+32So when is the Xbox 360 Blu Ray add-on coming out? I can set it right next to my Bourne/Transformers HD player!
- trogdor282, on 01/05/2008, -1/+27MS was never that interested in HDDVD itself. They just wanted to cockblock Sony.
- cambob76, on 01/05/2008, -2/+28I think Blu-ray is the least confusing format name. HD-DVD has "DVD" in the name which is bound to confuse people with no technical sense.
- superkendall, on 01/05/2008, -4/+29Right, because everyone is downloading 7GB HD media files now. Except that they're not.
- superkendall, on 01/05/2008, -6/+30They also bring up region-free, though most Blu-Ray titles are region free already and all of them have to be a year after release. Also on the porn thing, there are already a few companies doing Blu-Ray porn already so even that weak point doesn't hold up. And some few seem to think Blu-Ray players can't play DVD's - which of course they can.
- KMartSheriff, on 01/05/2008, -4/+27Go. Now. Return it. Store credit is better than nothing.
- TheSkinsFactory, on 01/05/2008, -5/+28Dugg down for being an *****.
- InfinitySnatch, on 01/05/2008, -4/+27Oh bless you, Tank God.
- superkendall, on 01/05/2008, -3/+26Capacity is about it really (though it also supports a slightly higher bitrate). But that is a significant point as it's better for computer media, and allows for higher quality video and audio since you can increase the bitrates used and support lossless audio (very few HD-DVD movies actually include lossless audio on the disc).
Also Blu-Ray discs are more durable since they have a special coating. If you ever rent them you'll see, they are usualy free of scratches unlike DVD's and HD-DVD's where rental discs are scratched to hell. - Elliuotatar, on 01/05/2008, -0/+22That will only distract her for a few seconds at most.
- scojerroc, on 01/05/2008, -0/+21you realize that you don't have to call them blurays, right? it's okay to call them movies.
- superkendall, on 01/05/2008, -3/+24I agree, HD-DVD would have won if Microsoft had included it in the 360. Even as late as the Elite version.
Microsoft was never really that helpful for the format. - superkendall, on 01/05/2008, -10/+30But HD-DVD was a name that was confusing consumers - who assumed if they had an HDTV, and DVD drive, they could play HD-DVD. You see comments like that come up on Amazon. If you have a format that requires a new player don't name it as if you can continue to use the old ones.
- Synthesize, on 01/05/2008, -12/+32R.I.P. HD-DVD
- RLCrisp, on 01/05/2008, -4/+24Yeah, I really hate saying two syllables instead of five when I talk about my movies...
- chrisutley, on 01/05/2008, -1/+20I have both formats thanks to PS3 and XBOX. They both look great so I really don't care who wins, I just want someone to win. Once there is a clear winner, production will go up and prices will go down for hardware and software. It's all good...
- CrimsonBlur, on 01/05/2008, -3/+22They don't own Blu-ray either. Blu-ray was developed by a group of companies, not just Sony. Just like the CD was Sony and Philips. To be fair to the parent poster, all of the formats Sony has developed on their own have failed to take off even if they insist on using them in their own products (Memory Stick), except a couple HDV formats and camcorder formats.
- anti_hax0r, on 01/05/2008, -2/+21They can put their HD-DVD next to their Betamax with the one tape stuck in it that they record on over and over.
- triplehelix, on 01/05/2008, -1/+20other then the flavor, why is some candy better then others?
- adidos, on 01/05/2008, -1/+19Ignoring the fact that the thing even plays video games, it's still a damn good deal on a Bluray player!
- superkendall, on 01/05/2008, -5/+23Meant to say "Cheap upconverting DVD player". Just showing once more the name is too close to DVD.
- Trixrox, on 01/05/2008, -5/+23HD-DVD has no region codes, period.
