- Zerikin, on 05/13/2008, -2/+66Those power supplies are so bad they need to make a new award of failure to give to them.
- RobertB, on 05/13/2008, -4/+64Newegg FTW!
- fuelvolts, on 05/13/2008, -1/+43Paul Johnson is an excellent PSU reviewer and all the folks at [H]ardOCP.com gave a great review. That being said, this is a PSU (the 400w Dynex) designed for the ignorant (but not stupid) customer who just needs their computer to work. These are not usually bought by shoppers, but are grabbed off the shelf by geek squad employees that need to repair grandma's emachines desktop that runs a celly with integrated graphics. Grandma is willing to pay $80+labor and tax to have her pictures and email safe and Best Buy knows it, so they price accordingly.
- vandalous, on 05/13/2008, -2/+36lol - another Best Buy success story. :roll eyes:
- IphtashuFitz, on 05/13/2008, -1/+25Best Buy is doing quite well over at consumerist.com in the voting for Worst Company in America. Just sayin.
- Dylson, on 05/13/2008, -6/+26I hate Best Buy.
- PueSi, on 05/13/2008, -0/+20Buying no-name brands for PSUs is asking for trouble.
- an0nymous, on 05/13/2008, -1/+21Good article. We need more submissions of this quality
- peterjmag, on 05/13/2008, -4/+24Best Buy just needs to stop trying to sell to "DIY computer builders." They'll never be able to compete with online stores like Newegg and TigerDirect for that kind of thing. They should stick to what they do best: selling overpriced electronics to non-tech savvy people with too much money to spend.
- punchinelli, on 05/13/2008, -0/+20This is going to sound stupid, but I have a ton of experience with PSUs, and a tried-and-true method of telling whether a PSU is of qualitly is to simply pick it up! The lighter the PSU's weight, the lower the quality. I noticed this after I fried countless Raidmax and Powmax PSUs and finally broke down and bought an Enermax.
Every since then, I've been comparing turd PSUs to quality ones (like Thermaltake, Sparkle, Enermax, Antec, the list goes on) and it's across-the-board confirmed - the heavier, the better. It's because of the internal metal heatsinks and numerous fans that are crammed into higher quality PSUs.
These PSUs at Best Buy feel like a feather when compared to picking up a 500w Enermax...... - AndrewDB, on 05/13/2008, -1/+18Those power supplies are so bad, they're sold by Best Buy..
- sw33tsarin, on 05/13/2008, -0/+20From an employee standpoint I can tell you to NEVER buy Dynex. Rocketfish is ok for cables but that's about it. Dynex- We'll see you tomorrow, remember your receipt.
- sockpuppets, on 05/13/2008, -1/+17Oh shut the ***** up.
- stronglikedan, on 05/13/2008, -2/+17Please stop commenting immediately. Thank you.
- sockpuppets, on 05/13/2008, -1/+17Those power supplies are so dumb they went to a football game and thought the quarter back was a refund!
- StarlessKnight, on 05/13/2008, -1/+14Actually you can screw up with blank media; poor manufacturing can lead to relative rapid disintegration (rot and other joyous, if uncommon, consequences). Don't know if Dynex does screw up blank media because I never buy it.
- dreesemonkey, on 05/13/2008, -0/+12"But is Best Buy doing you a service a disservice by selling you its own computer power supply?"
What the hell does this say? - bejayel, on 05/13/2008, -0/+14Then go to your local computer shop. I have NEVER seen a PC component at best buy/futureshop that wasnt priced at least 180% of my local computer shops price. You are a moron if you buy components/peripherals/anything to do with computer electronics there.
- brstilson, on 05/13/2008, -1/+16If you aren't an idiot, you already know that anything from Dynex other than cables and blank media (because really, how on earth could you ***** that up?) is utter crap and not even worth your time. I always cringe when I'm in there watching a couple take home their new Dynex or Insignia HDTV because I know what kind of hell they're likely to go through.
- incube, on 05/13/2008, -1/+11I've only been on digg for a few months now and these 'only xxx diggs and on front page????!!1' comments make my eyes bleed..
- houndeyex, on 05/13/2008, -0/+10Branding a 200-300w PSU as a 400w is a total and utter failure, and a lie.
- mustbepatient, on 05/13/2008, -0/+9...and don't buy Rocketfish cables when you can buy cables at least as good from monoprice.com for 1/4 the price!
Basically, don't go to Best Buy if you can help it... - ArielMT, on 05/13/2008, -0/+9> Those power supplies are so bad they need to make a new award of failure to give to them.
"So in the end, the Dynex unit did manage to excel in one category, sadly that category was the test equipment destroying category where it somehow one upped the PowertekPro 500w which is certainly not a good thing to excel at in our estimation. " - article, pg. 3, "Load Testing Summary"
Sounds to me like they did. - MrFurious2k, on 05/13/2008, -1/+11If you're buying a component at Best Buy, could it honestly be said you're a DIYer? Let's face it, BBY hasn't figured out that quality AND price makes the winning combination.
- AceGoober, on 05/13/2008, -0/+10Calling these power supplies pieces of junk would be an understatement. Hopefully BestBuy will read the review and immediately pull all stock of these PSUs off of their shelf. I hope they slap the purchasing agent who bought these units upside the head for wasting their time and money.
- MoneyShot, on 05/13/2008, -0/+9I've been building PCs since the mid-90's. The power supply is the most underrated and overlooked component off all. Some people will only buy Crucial RAM, Seagate hard drives, Plextor CD ROMs, or Logitech mice, but they don't even know the name brand of their PSU. Me personally, I only ever buy PC Power & Cooling units. Pricey, but well-worth the cost.
- tokyomonster, on 05/13/2008, -0/+11"There are many things that the Dynex DX-400WPS is, of the things a 400w power supply it is not by any stretch of the imagination and this was certainly clear from the beginning given the build quality of this unit."
Is it just me, or is that sentence poorly written? - sockpuppets, on 05/13/2008, -0/+8Your joke's so old it walked into an antique store and they kept it!
- inactive, on 05/13/2008, -0/+8Why would you risk a Q6600 and an 8800GTS on something worth less than the copper in it?
- afruff23, on 05/13/2008, -1/+9Yes
- JQP123, on 05/13/2008, -0/+7I buy a fair amount from NewEgg but it never hurts to shop around. For example, I recently bought an Antec EA380 power supply. Here's the NewEgg entry:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N8 ...
Total Cost: $59.99 + $9.25 S&H = $69.24
Here's what I actually purchased:
http://www.provantage.com/antec-ea380~7ANTS02R.htm
Totals Cost: $44.68 + $6.95 S&H = $51.63 - Rndm_Tngnt, on 05/13/2008, -0/+9And they're still marked up as much as 1000%, it's crazy, I tell ya.
- SkippyDoorknob, on 05/13/2008, -0/+7"When 400 watts you reach, work as good, it will not, hmm?"
-Yoda - inactive, on 05/13/2008, -0/+7dynex cables are also *****
- inactive, on 05/13/2008, -0/+6No, planned obsolescence is the goal. They will keep selling this manufactured garbage. They will just hope nobody who shops at Worst Buy sees the article, and understands that these units are not a best buy.
- whoreable, on 05/13/2008, -1/+7It is a tech story. It belongs on digg.
- Crosshare, on 05/13/2008, -0/+7I try to support my local little custom builder shops, but everytime you try to go back to one it's out of business and you're left with Best Buy :(
- inactive, on 05/13/2008, -1/+8I'm a sys admin who majored in English. It's not you. The entire article is poorly written. Almost every sentence has a grammatical error.
- inactive, on 05/13/2008, -0/+5I don't even have to look but I know that I could find PSUs on Newegg that both cost less and exceed the standards that those two ***** fire hazards attempt to meet.
- Troy64, on 05/13/2008, -0/+5I bought a laptop there about three years ago. I had to tell about 5 people that I didn't want the extended warranty before I could get out the door. It was a pain but I did get a really good price on the laptop.
- slider121, on 05/13/2008, -0/+6at least Compusa carried Antec. They were about $20 more than most online stores, but a good brand.
- inactive, on 05/13/2008, -1/+8I like being able to buy parts locally when in a bind, but they don't have to dedicate a huge portion of the store towards it.
- sw33tsarin, on 05/13/2008, -0/+4Yeah us employees get the rocketfish hdmi cables for about six dollars. I work for BBY cause I'm a college student so go easy on me, I hate them as much as the next person.
- brstilson, on 05/13/2008, -0/+5I so rarely burn CDs now. I have a stack that is two years old.
- TTURabble, on 05/13/2008, -1/+6Steps to getting quality products at Best Buy:
Step 1: Find the item you want to buy, test the demo unit to see how the item works.
Step 2: If the item works to your satisfaction, quickly leave the store (w/o the item, lets not steal!) and return home
Step 3: Purchase the item online at half the cost of Best Buy - inactive, on 05/13/2008, -0/+4Newegg. [Nothing else need be said]
- aeiou, on 05/13/2008, -0/+4I think anyone who reads hardocp is smart enough not to buy one of these psu's anyways....
- brstilson, on 05/14/2008, -0/+4my stack of those is 1 1/2 years old.
- unknownsoldierX, on 05/14/2008, -0/+5You know, they have blank DVDs now.
- toastgodsupreme, on 05/13/2008, -0/+5Why aren't there laws against being able to sell consumers ***** quality products?
And how do these companies get away with advertising a 400w PSU that can't do more than 200w? -
