- underthewether, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11they need to offer passive cooling more often on video cards
- edzieba, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I almost began to regret my 7900GT purchase.
Until, that is, I remembered that come 6 months time, DX10 cards will be arriving. - RatherDashing, on 10/12/2007, -11/+19I love how people bitch that Wii is $250 but think $300 for a video card is a "killer price."
/me thinks PC gaming is way too expensive - mb96net, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13No one has ever bitched that the Wii is $250. PS3 is a different story.
- kromeassassin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8It gives you SLi performance, 512MB and a killer price TOO! w00t! Who wants to buy my 7900GT?
- brendanc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8PC Gaming is usually more rich than console gaming. Can you imagine how big (and expensive) a game console would be if it had to produce the same level of graphics at 1280x1024 and higher resolutions?
The other advantage is that you can upgrade your PC piece by piece, granted you have relatively up-to-date hardware. But, for example, Sound Cards and Ram have a pretty long life in terms of computer upgrades vs. other components.
Sound cards especially, I only just recently bought a Soundblaster X-Fi. Previously I had an Audigy 2 which lasted for 3 years. (it is still in use in my brothers computer).
I also recently upgraded my ram, but that was not because I needed to actually get BETTER ram. I wanted 2GB but I wanted the modules to be a matched pair.
Video cards are an odd thing. They can make or break your computer's performance depending on what game is out. Personally I think my overclocked Opteron processor is not my performance limiting factor. Rather, it is my video card not being beefy enough. So, $300 to make my entire computer gaming experience better? Hell yes! - Slovenian6474, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"On another note, does any one know if a DX 9 card can support DX 10 through drivers?"
No - bigz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4There's no way to support the DirectX 10 features through software (you can be 'compatible' with DirectX 10 on DirectX 9 hardware though). There are some significant hardware changes coming forth, with the introduction of Shader Model 4.0.
- britkev1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4If I truly needed a new card at this time I would certainly go this route. The passive cooling makes it. However if its not needed, wait for the DX10 cards to come out later this year/early next year.
- Roger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Why the hell did they bother measuring the noise levels?
- Mejogid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The 7800 GTX is slightly faster than the 7900 GT, so you can use that as a reference point.
- BugMeNot2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Actually, the 7900GT is faster than the 7800GTX. Plus the 7900GT has more overclocking headroom.

it can be very expensive, but upgrading isn't really a requirement, people just choose to. I'm more than happy playing oblivion on my years old 6600GT/athlon XP with the settings turned down. Upgrading PC's has always been expensive and comes frequently so people expect it to be. I think upgrades in consoles come so rarely (years apart) that it's more of a shock.
edit* whoops, wrong reply - Mejogid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow - looks like a great deal. I'm really impressed by how nVidia's been extending the 7xxx line. Where as the series 6 pretty much reached it's limit as it was released (excluding SLI, supported OCing etc), it looks like the 7900s are still going strong.
On another note, does any one know if a DX 9 card can support DX 10 through drivers? AFAIK there's no major hardware changes between the two, but ATI + nVidia might just go down the forced upgrade path. - lcohiomatty86, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1a good mix between the standard video card cooling system and passive would be to include a bigger heatsink than standard cards have but include a low RPM fan that would be much quieter than the whiney fan that is currently included on most 76/7900 nvidia cards.
- yournamehere, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1maybe you should stop rubbing yourself up and down on it
- salinemist, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3All of these forced hardware upgrades are utter BS. Can we just get better gameplay instead of 6x quadlinear filtering with voodoo ghostshadowing and anti-anti-anti-aliasing?
- yournamehere, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1that's funny
- Mome, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Make no bones about it, for the price, I'd rather ***** the prettiest whore in the world. There are some great looking birds in South East Asia. I know. I've ***** five.
- slaystench, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2As others have stated, If you plan on upgrading to Vista, hold out for the DX10 cards. You're just wasting your money otherwise.
- lcohiomatty86, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i use a 7900gt from XFX and it runs nicely.. temps hardly ever get above 60C (according to nvidia's temp monitoring soluiton) and never crashes on me..mayby the ventilation in your case wasn't very good?
- elmimmo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Anyone knows how it compares to a 7800 GTX?
- Slovenian6474, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Agreed. I like to spend some money to have a sweet system. Also, once upgraded, i have the extra parts that usually can be scrapped together to make another system. Past systems i have made into secondary computers, sold to my brother, gave to my parents. It all gets used in the end.
- Snarfy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I have two 6800GTs from XFX. They both came with fan + heatsink. Neither would run Halo for over 5 minutes without overheating. I tried more fans and opening up the case. I tried redoing the thermal paste. No luck. The only solution was watercooling.
They might have passive cooling. That doesn't mean it works. Beware XFX! - eleven, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Now all they need is to do is make it compatible with the MacPro.
- wildleaf, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3Yes they did. It is on the third thread of:
