- Crucible1001, on 01/06/2009, -6/+32No, the expensive part is the apple logo.
- Bbanda, on 01/06/2009, -1/+13because you can find flash sticks on the ground and not want them, why would I want to buy more of them.
- badqat, on 01/05/2009, -3/+14Overabundance of supply should lead to lower prices. Lower prices should lead to lower priced stuff. Like a $99 iPhone, perhaps.
- dotorg, on 01/06/2009, -1/+10Thats an easy question.
No.
Of course that isn't impacting sales. There's six billion people in the world, four billion of them with access to computers. And you think DOD employees even register on the radar? That's like saying cell phones won't sell with cameras because secured facilities don't allow cameras with phones.
Its ridiculous. - grandhi, on 01/06/2009, -0/+8if flash can replace the hard drive in large scale with reasonable price...we can see demand again.
~ramki - Ratteler, on 01/06/2009, -0/+6Dumbasses... We are waiting for you to lower prices. Have fun not making stuff.
- DigitalisAkujin, on 01/06/2009, -1/+6The flash in the iPhone is pretty cheap already. The expensive part of the whole thing is the LCD + Touchscreen so I wouldn't get my hopes up if I were you.

- tgc1, on 01/06/2009, -0/+4I recently spent a hell of a lot of time debating, researching and weighing my options in the Flash memory world. I looked at various flash cards (SD, Compact Flash, Memory Stick etc) and the Flash Drives. Turns out that the flash drives are much faster in terms of write speed and read speed. Where the SD cards and the other lot are slower. I didn't know before hand, before I purchased a 4 pack of 4GB cards that there were different classes of SD card. I had class 2, and when I looked at the write speed being about 2MB/s, I brought them back (hadn't even used them yet). That's just ridiculous.
So yes, these technologies have a ways to go before they're cost effective and the performance levels reach comparable levels with HDD's. For comparison, even on a USB cable, an external drive will reach transfer speeds of up to 480Mbps or about 60MB/s. That and the cost factor is enough that it's difficult to start using flash drives or cards as a reliable storage medium. I originally wanted to use them as a form of disk replacement to keep projects (that need to be updated periodically) separated. Because of cost and the write speed issue i'm not going to be adopting those thing for a while. Even though i've, to date, got about 5 SD's (micro, mini and standard SD). - Topher06, on 01/06/2009, -0/+4Stop making rinky-dinky 1gb flash drives. Honestly the next USB or flash drive I buy will have to have at least 16gb on it for it to be worth my while.
The market it flooded with small capacity flash drives and memory and that is why you can find packages of even 3 8gb drives for $24, but people want large capacity flash drives, not just a bunch that add up to a lot of capacity. - DigitalisAkujin, on 01/06/2009, -0/+2Touche sir
- rolf, on 01/06/2009, -1/+3In the short-term, but not in the long term. Production becomes lower, economies of scale go down, and incentive to progress (larger capacity or higher speed) slows.
- breadfred, on 01/06/2009, -2/+4Damn. I did not think anyone could really be this stupid. People care because they want cheaper memory. That can only be achieved if people buy old memory to fund the new technologies, increasing memory density and lowering cost per byte.
- KenCW, on 01/06/2009, -2/+4FLASH! Ahh ahh...
- tekproxy, on 01/06/2009, -0/+2I was just thinking of this song.
- HonoredMule, on 01/06/2009, -0/+2Then factor in that the "growth" is being presented in percentage and not real measurements...yeah, I'm really sorry that your industry won't increase by twice as much this year as it did last year.
So if the industry is 121% (2.21 times) bigger than it was last year, then with 80% growth next year it will only be 3.978 times bigger than it was last year--so the market will still have quadrupled over 2 years. I can really feel their pain. Sadly, with the advent of the SSD having already begun, there's no market force for the industry to continue skyrocketing even /more/ maniacally than it did previously. Hopefully a few rounds of layoffs will help offset the /reduced increase/.
Do I look like the IRS? Save these ***** numbers and sob stories for them. - Topher06, on 01/06/2009, -0/+1yeah, thats not it.
- Cancerous, on 01/06/2009, -1/+2I wish technology was cyclical. I want to pull out my old (actual) zip drive.
- vaccumpony, on 01/06/2009, -0/+1 Don't be lulled into that false economic theory. Overabundance does not lead to lower prices, overabundance leads to people being put out of work to reduce production and supply so prices can go back up again. Probably the worst thing that could happen (if you want the current economic climate to go away and be replaced with something much worse).
- InsaneOni, on 01/06/2009, -0/+1Flash memory is already super cheap. 16gb flash drives can be found on sale for $20 or less.
- orion846, on 01/06/2009, -1/+2it is, and that's straight from the beeper king, so you can take THAT to the bank
- palehorse864, on 01/08/2009, -0/+1According to the other article, the incentive to progress problem won't be an issue, we'll have what we need by then.
http://digg.com/hardware/SDXC_memory_cards_promise ... - inactive, on 01/06/2009, -2/+2I do!
- cquinnd, on 01/06/2009, -1/+1And Flash memory does not just mean Flash Drives. There are many other uses for embedded storage (SSDs, MP3 players, Smart Phones, PCs with dedicated "recovery boot" drives, Netbooks, GPS Units, etc).
Low production here is an indication of lowered production in almost all aspects of flash memory usage, due to a slowed economy. - Leviathan433, on 01/06/2009, -2/+2Savior of the Universe!
- sexybobo, on 01/06/2009, -1/+1I blame all the people on digg. You all bought so many flash drives for you and all your family that no one is buying them any more.
- theeggman, on 01/06/2009, -1/+1For most if not all manufacturers flash is selling at below the cost to produce the chip. Many companies are losing money on every chip they sell just to keep market share. At these prices I do not know why companies are cramming their devices with as much as they can get their hands on.
- eadint, on 01/06/2009, -9/+2I think this is the DOD's fault.
For the last 2 months just having a flash drive is a security violation.
this is DOD wide and basically means that you cannot purchase them.
I wounder if this is the reason that the sales are drying up - mr5150, on 01/06/2009, -13/+2like a give a rats ass.
does anyone else really give a flying rats if flash memory sales are down?
buried for lame

What is Digg?
