- maskd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Where's your sense of adventure nerfdude? It's fun to fix ***** yourself then to replace it
- lemon404, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I got that problem yesterday... I just corrupted my iPod messing with iPodWizard (I know, its my fault !). What I did was quite simple: while the ipod was no longuer recognized as an ipod but only as a removable HD (booting it in DISK MODE), I opened the windows Disk Manager and formated the partition to fat32... After that, ipodupdater was able to restore it to the original state.
no need for that linux procedure because no partitions were remaining on that broken ipod; but if you try to delete a unknow partition type via windows, try partition magic, it'll do the trick. - civantis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i fixed it.
- cpjax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1your hd is messed up open it up and make sure the hd connector is fully seated
- bigfatgoalie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Here's a freaking idea...how about if you connect a hard drive to Windows (or any OS really), you make sure it is detected in the device manager (detected as a device), has a VALID and unique drive letter, and can be read/written to first before running software?
Seriously, anything 30GB and under can typically be formatted FAT32 with windows explorer, and will magically restore after doing so. For larger ipods, simply find a disk utility that will let you format a +30GB drive in fat32.
That's it...detected as a device, assigned drive letter, formatted...WORKING IPOD!!! - kejistan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hmm, funny thing is, everything seems to break just after that precious extended warranty gives out...
- runner91786, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Man, and I just took apart a friends ipod mini two weeks ago that seemed to be completely and totally gone. Although I honestly dont think this would have helped.
- Sixcolors, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Now if someone can figure out how to restore a bricked PSP, it would make a few people happy.
- Nerfdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0there's a better way. get the extended warranty and just get it replaced when it breaks. it's a safe wager that something about your ipod will crap out sooner or later, so just get the longer coverage and get a fresh one when it dies.

A problem that can occur with bricked iPod's, and this is what happened to me, is that a wierd partition with no drive space shows up as a windows drive, and you can't format it or touch it with the iPod Restore Utility. Linux on the other hand (has magical powers that can fix iPods) detects both partitions of the iPod and you can reconfigure the partition with the firmware and function written on it. This is what the walkthrough describes i believe - ParanoiaAgent, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have this problem. Windows will not recognize my Ipod. There's got to be an easier way, does anyone have any tips?
- mrkamil, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What fixed mine was just pulling the Fonz on it.
Seriously, try it. - Galaeron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah...mine bricked in 2 weeks of buying, Listening to it one night while I owned up in WoW, plugged it in to sync, bricked by the morning, so getting a "fresh" one isn't really a good thing in my eyes. Not to mention I had to fix it the first day I got it.
- OhBrian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If you run the Updater utility and it cannot determine the iPod disk size (it reports NA) then don't waste your time trying this. If that is the case the HDD has failed and can only be fixed via replacement. If you bought your iPod in the last 18 months the hard drive replacement cost is about $34 US including shipping both ways.
- Galaeron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That was posted way back in May, could have made some type of advancement...oh well ima try it on my 20gig this weekend
- idman3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0sounds confusing, hey anyone with a 4g ipod that just shows the folder icon. Does yours make a clicking nose every 5 or 10 seconds?
- anti_hax0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ummm what?
http://reviews.designtechnica.com/review976.html - Otto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0BTW, you don't even have to format the thing as FAT32. Formatting it as NTFS works just as well to solve the "Firmware Write Error" problem when trying to Restore the thing.
Restoring an iPod isn't really all that complex. People make way more out of it than it actually is. If you can somehow write the firmware file to it, it'll magically fix itself on the reboot. Partitions and everything. That's really all that the iPod Updater is doing. - dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My ipod wouldn't start up/mount at all, it either went past the Apple symbol, and showed the folder icon, then shutdown, or just spun and clicked.. The soloution : Violence.. Hitting/dropping it a few times (On the advice of a friend who had the same problem) made it start working again.. After a month or something, it stoped starting up at all, I left it for a week, it started up again, I ran the iPod software and updated it, and it's worked fine since (Everyday for a few hours a day or more, for the last week)
"sounds confusing, hey anyone with a 4g ipod that just shows the folder icon. Does yours make a clicking nose every 5 or 10 seconds?" - Thats exactly what I had, (I think) it's the harddrive read-write heards stumbling around not finding anything, and (*ahem*) dropping it a few times sorts it out, then when it starts up, mount it, and wipe it.
Once again proving violence solves all.. :P
- Ben - saulbush, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Cheers Ben! As with Idman3 the bashing route worked for me as well!!
- Vektuz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My ipod nano wouldn't recognise my PC until I held down the two buttons that cause it to do a full reset.
When I got a new PC the same thing happened again, and I had to do the same hard reset.
Before doing all sorts of things, if you plug your pod in and it reports it as an unknown device or cant figure it out, just try that method first. - idman3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thanks you Ben, you method surprisingly worked better then anything I've tried. Maybe I should Smack more things to get them to work.

My brother had the 'clicking' problem apple says that this is the noise that iPods make when they go wrong.
My suggestion:
Get the phone number for HQ and get angry. If its not to far past guarantee then they might just replace it (worked for me) - Tr176, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have destroyed too many iPods to count and i must say this is helpfull in a few cases i've seen.

THANK YOU Lemon404! I was fiddling with iPodLinux and the Updater could no longer mount the iPod to restore the firmware. I tried your technique and it looks like it worked! cheers. - civantis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i have a nano.i installed ipodlinux, which worked great, but my songs wouldnt register in the ipod firmware.i tried to reinstall it, and it totally bricked it. it boots and says use itunes to restoore, but when i tey to use it, it says ipod service error.i even tried to reinstall ipod linux, but it wont reckonize the ipod.what should i do?
- irobot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0There is no iPod mini. It's a "nano."
