- dagreatone, on 10/10/2007, -23/+109buried for saying "format wars over"
- fozzie, on 10/10/2007, -21/+84Vizio is already beating everyone else in the LCD market with cheap LCD's. This is a HUGE nail in the coffin of Blue ray IMO if this is true because believe it or not, _price_ is what drives 95% of US consumers not quality. I mean come on, Vizio?, PLEASE.
- TangentThought, on 10/10/2007, -14/+56"First Sub-$200 HD DVD Player Announced: Format Wars Over?"
Wishful thinking, my friend. Wishful thinking. - waterdrop, on 10/10/2007, -11/+51Do I get this or the Xbox 360 add-on? As long as I get my free 8 HD-DVDs I'm happy.
- yum9me, on 10/10/2007, -17/+55"Is this it?"
Answer: Hell No! - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -11/+42I've always contended that for the layman HD-DVD has the name right too. Everyone knows what HD is, not everyone knows what Blu-Ray is right off the bat.
HD-DVD is putting together a wicked combo. Putting together the price with the new studios the won over (read: purchased) recently. Blu-Ray could have triumphed if the PS3 had taken off much like the PS2 was the least expensive DVD player of its day.
Hopefully this particular format war is coming to a close :) - chris4404, on 10/10/2007, -8/+37Down fanboy. Down.
- xShad0w, on 10/10/2007, -5/+29Real question is quality, will it crap out and break, i've found with dvd players that what you pay for is what you get
- Crosshare, on 10/10/2007, -12/+36I'm all for the HD-DVD camp, but damn that's an ugly piece of hardware.
- TnTBass, on 10/10/2007, -11/+34Buried for suggesting this will mark the end of Blue-ray.
When Blue-Ray players get a lower price, will you say they are HD-DVD killers?
The only true way to end the format war, is to have one side concede victory, or an abundance of dual format players. One side may only concede victory after sales dwindle to the point that it's no longer profitable, but one lone sub $200 player will not be the straw that breaks a camels back. You might as well just label this a Windows killer, or iPhone killer for it also carries the same amount of truth - utter Bull *****. - xOpifex, on 10/10/2007, -18/+37Will be interesting to see where this goes, but with blu-ray sales being double that of HD-DVD so far for the year, I doubt this will be the end.
- tamtamg, on 10/10/2007, -9/+28Let me preface by saying that I am wii owner and do not own either the xbox or ps3. But as long as the ps3 is a bluray player, I don't think the war will ever be over. There simply too many PS3's out there for an entire format to be dropped.
- Danjak, on 10/10/2007, -7/+25"Format Wars Over?"
No. - danwallace, on 10/10/2007, -5/+22I love how every time anything happens it's announced as THE END OF THE ***** FORMAT WARS.
- masamunecyrus, on 10/10/2007, -4/+19My cousin worked for the media dept. of Best Buy all last summer and said that he heard a lot of people choose "HD-DVD" because it sounds like their "HDTVs", and thus, in their logic, is most likely to work best and be the simplest.
Of course, one Best Buy in central Indiana is hardly an appropriate consumer survey, but that's at least how it is, here. - fishbert, on 10/10/2007, -3/+18With me getting my media electronically, I don't care if this is the end.
- demonotaku, on 10/10/2007, -13/+27Format war over? Ummm...no. I'm sure the Blu-Ray "camp" will come out with a cheap player soon-enough. Just wait.
- zenerdiode, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14Lemme guess, you buy Bose speakers and Monster cables at full price, don't you?
- djSyndrome, on 10/10/2007, -7/+19For it to be a 'nail in the coffin' of Blu-Ray, they would have to be near-death. That's not the case right now.
- MilitantRabbit, on 10/10/2007, -4/+16As long as it does its job, looks don't matter. Hell, the best minds in the world are as fugly as can be.
My first DVD player was ugly and blocky, but I was happy because it did its job of playing DVDs. - waterdrop, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12For a budget unit thats just fine.
- waterdrop, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12That's what I'm thinking because for $179 you get 9 HD-DVDs and a HD-DVD player that works with Xbox 360 and Vista. That's a steal. Does anyone know if the Xbox 360 Remote is still included in the box as well as King Kong? If so then its such a steal.
- scabbers, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11The one with the free movies seems like a better deal.
- specialK16, on 10/10/2007, -5/+14You'll be dug down, because apparently, Digg is also full of anti-anything-related-to-sony.
- gweedo767, on 10/10/2007, -3/+12Right, because that 24fps movie that your TV's deinterlacer is convering to 60fps is really gonna care...
- Evoguy, on 10/10/2007, -8/+17My roommate has a Vizio lcd screen, and next to our other Panasonic plasma, it looks like total crap.
- Smoov, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8So are you saying people should not buy based on price? What if they can't afford more than $200? Do you drive a new Lexus or Mercedes? Why not? Don't tell me you bought your car based on price instead of quality! Get a second job, man! You should only buy high-quality cars like a Mercedes 500 or better. Don't tell me you can't afford it. No excuse.
- brewer, on 10/10/2007, -5/+13 DLTV reviewed the Vizio I own and raved about it. Vizio uses LG glass anyway. Just because it doesn't have "Panasonic" or "Samsung" on the front doesn't mean it's crap.
- addrake, on 10/10/2007, -10/+18I can't tell if your comment is disparaging Vizio or not. If it is, you're nuts. I have 2 Vizio sets and they both are absolutely fantastic. Not just the price to performance ratio either, they really are outstanding televisions. Google the reviews.
- DudeOfJustice, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10The one I got 2 weeks ago still had the remote and King Kong. I love this remote! It controls both my 360 and my TV.
- waterdrop, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8The Xbox 360 HD-DVD drive does.
- majmera, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Whether you can tell the difference between 1080i and 1080p is very debatable. It depends on how good a job your TV does of de-interlacing. How big your screen size is and how close you are to the screen. Not to mention the discs have to be mastered in 1080p. In most situations, people are unlikely to tell the difference unless they really step close to the TV to figure out the difference.
If the discs are not mastered in 1080p, then its all moot point anyway. The only difference is whether your player is making up the rest of the pixels or your TV or something else in between. - batmant, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Digg title generator
[itty bitty piece of news], [wild inference] - pixelate, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Then that would have to include all the Dell and Apple widescreen LCD's that plenty of Digg people seem to love. Mostly LG panels in both.
- barc0001, on 10/10/2007, -5/+12Sony's already selling Blu-Ray players at a loss, they're called Playstation 3s, so how much cheaper can they go in the short term? You think anyone else in BRCamp is going to sell hardware at a loss to prop up Sony's format? Hell no. They're just going to sit back and see if Sony can pull it off by bleeding losses. If Sony does win the war, great. If not, I'm pretty sure Samsung, Pioneer and the rest will be cranking out HDDVD players like nobody's business rather effortlessly.
- shelbygt33, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9The fact is, the different between 1080i/1080p is negligible for the majority of TV sets sold out there. But don't take my word for it, take Sony's "True HD" talk.
- hipnerd, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9BluRay's fortunes appear tied to the Playstation 3. If that machine was a runaway smash, it would have been the death knell for HD-DVD. As is stands, there is plenty of time for HD-DVD to regain the momentum. And an inexpensive player would really put the heat on BluRay.
- DudeOfJustice, on 10/10/2007, -8/+15I say go for the 360 add-on and get full 1080p. I just picked one up and it's gorgeous!
- SpaceParanoids, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Technically any resolution above 720p is "true HD", despite what marketing slogans you've been exposed to.
- demonotaku, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8I think it all depends on the brand. I have a cheapo DVD player and it's lasted the past 3-4 years with no problems. I'll just wait and see the reviews and some in-store models before I make any final decisions.
- epyon180, on 10/10/2007, -4/+10Yes it does, I was watching Casino in 1080p last night with the VGA input.
- piper999, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7It doesn't make any difference for movies since they are shot at 24 frames per second anyway. You can look at your TV with a magnifying glass and not see any difference between movies on HD-DVD showing at 1080i and 1080p.
- jostheller, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9I think you are not stressing the "may" enough... I can assure you that in the near future they will absolutely enforce the content protection flag on all HD-DVD and BD movies. The only reason they are not right now, is because they don't want to kill the format by making a big deal over anti-piracy. When the world is more hooked on HD-DVD/BD then DVD, we will see all movies forcing that content protection.
- jostheller, on 10/10/2007, -7/+12Who will win the format war? In my humble opinion I think the "winner" will be the camp that has the lower priced movies. Currently HD-DVD's and BD's are retailing for 25-30 dollars in the stores. I personally consider that premium too high for your typical consumer. Bottom line is in a few years all next generation players will be multi format players (HD-DVD, BD, DVD, CD and all side flavors of those formats) and the format that will be selling the most movies will be the cheaper movie.
from a technology standpoint, I hope BD wins if any of them win. Size does matter, and I would take 50 over 25 any day. movie wise it makes little difference - SouthsideIrish, on 10/10/2007, -5/+10Most people do not have 1080p panels, so why do they need a 1080p player. This is not for the person that bought a $5000 dollar panel, just for your average home user.
- gweedo767, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8Considering that Sony still won't license the tech for Bluray to Chinese MFG's I really doubt you will see a sub $200 Bluray player anytime soon.
- DudeOfJustice, on 10/10/2007, -4/+9Yes it does, I have a 360 elite w/ HDMI.
- harrypl0tter, on 10/10/2007, -11/+17This seems desperate to me......
- EuphopiaB, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6I REALLY don't think you know the difference between interlaced and progressive scan. I have switched between 1080i and 1080p and really I don't notice the difference.
Similarly, you just implied that 1080p is the ONLY HD standard in the US. -
