Open with media player classic or VLC. - jayadelson, on 06/17/2008, -1/+12I founded Equinix in 1998 with Al Avery. Since then it's gone international, Asia/Pacific and Europe, and is the largest datacenter and network exchange company in the world. Peering is the key to the business... but that's a long story.
- IronDonut, on 06/17/2008, -1/+7Love going into the data center. Ours is only about 1/4 the size of that place but it's still really impressive.
- jaxter2010, on 06/17/2009, -1/+7Mmmm....this article brings back fond memories of the good ol' days of digg.
- PPCG4, on 06/17/2008, -1/+6Hosting MySpace.com? KILL IT WITH FIRE.
- jetskidude911, on 06/17/2008, -1/+6This is very interesting. I love seeing videos like this. I was really impressed with the way they handle power.
- DrDabbles, on 06/17/2008, -0/+4Why? You can buy any one of those servers off the shelf from any of the major vendors. Just because they are located in a colo doesn't mean the servers are super special. The larger the company, the more push there is to use COTS parts...so they are easily replaced.
- reVerse, on 06/17/2008, -0/+4Equinix have datacenters all over the world. Most of their customers buy space from them in more than one of their locations. In the last day, the company that I work for has had me in four different datacenters, including equinix chicago, that they keep server space in. It may be a lot of eggs in one basket, but its not like its the only basket.
- scaper, on 06/17/2008, -0/+4Equinix doesn't used raised floors in most of their buildings...
You have to be extra special in order to get the authorization to install your own raised floors in your colo space in their facilities... - Totz83, on 06/17/2008, -1/+4So many eggs, and all in one basket!
- iliketurtles2, on 11/20/2008, -0/+3Thank you, the flash player on the website wouldn't work for me.
- MacBookForMe, on 06/17/2008, -4/+7Thank you for this...it's just amazing! (what's behind the Web scene)
- DrDabbles, on 06/17/2008, -0/+3I haven't seen overhead cooling in so long, it struck me right away. She was detailing the concept of driving a VW through it, and I was thinking of all the 20-year-old centers I've seen retrofitted with either raised floors, or even more modern cooling. Yikes!
- inactive, on 06/17/2008, -1/+4i'd give my left nut to be able to toy with those servers for 1 day :P
- inactive, on 06/17/2008, -0/+2Where are the f*king gerbil habitrail wheels for the power?
- Totz83, on 06/17/2008, -0/+2Imaginationland is glitchy, now suck my balls Kyle!
- inactive, on 06/17/2008, -1/+3????
push/pull
that is the top - bottom is raised floors.
you might want to look at the APC website to get up on what's current???? - geniusj, on 06/17/2008, -0/+2My GF and I went on our 2nd date at Equinix. Not really intentionally, though. She did think it was about the coolest thing ever though..
- vw2005, on 06/17/2008, -0/+2Hmmm I dunno... I watched another documentary that showed things completely differently.
http://www.enyella.com/blog/images/linksys-interne ... - mattyx, on 06/17/2008, -0/+2It looks a lot more like the one in Northern CA. I was there yesterday, so it's fresh in my mind. Also not shown, the free video games in the lobby area. Bowling baby!
- dpogni, on 06/17/2008, -0/+2literally literally literally literally
- IronDonut, on 06/17/2008, -1/+210 megawatt = 13,400 horsepower (approx) 24 hours a day. Thats a lot of power.
- inactive, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1"power" pun?
- inactive, on 06/17/2008, -2/+3yup. bad ***** ass
- ZoomBoy, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1Fascinating 2 year old video tour of an equinix data center.
- MattFid, on 06/17/2008, -6/+7I just warehoused in my pants.
- LuCiFer6, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1If that's their data center near LAX then I know PlayStation Network host some of their servers from that location.
- geniusj, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1Not every Equinix has the video games. The Great Oaks location does (probably the one you were in), but the Ashburn, VA one doesn't (for example).
- DrDabbles, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1Hey, um, think of one thing here. If you have 200 networks all peering in that one site, you can basically guarantee 100% IP availability.
If your AC system ***** the bed, you can basically guarantee 100% of those servers are going to die a sauna-like death. Obviously, without redundant power, you're in an even worse situation since the local power co is probably not on call for you 24x7. - binbash, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1Even with all of this N+ Redundancy, I dont know if anyone recalls, Equinix Chicago went down HARD on June 25th, 2005.... http://www.webhostingtalk.com/archive/index.php/t- ... Not only did they lose power from the grid, but their backup generator was wired with a short circuit. I remember that day vividly... Large companies paying top dollar had major data loss. People were in disbelief. Some engineers almost in tears. that morning I spoke to a guy that was in the data center when it happened.. He literally got locked in as the biometric doors require power. He said it powered down and up about 3 times in 15 minutes, I could only imagine what type of voltage was running to all of our servers.. talk about a hard drive killer.. I was in and out in about an hour... bringing up about 42 Linux servers all which ran the slow but journaled and trusty ext3 file system.. Equinix was brought to its knees and had to rely on ComEd Mobile Trailer generators for about a week. We were lucky :) It is a great data center and a lot of peering goes on in that building, but everything they advertised pretty much failed.. I would definately recommend Chicago over LA Equinix because of less natural disasters...
- timfitz, on 06/18/2008, -0/+1I used to work for a company that had a cage in their Chicago location. The facility is amazing with the biometric scanners and black lights. It looks like a scene from mission impossible.
- HamNCheese, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1God.... It really is the same pitch at every single data center. Notice how they never show the NOC, or any real work being done. It's always about the generators and air system.
- scotishstriker, on 06/17/2008, -1/+2were is rob snider
- mark2005, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1This segment was reported by now Revision 3 producer Neha Tiwari...
- Genghis1, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1Looks like a telephone central office. Only we don't plug our servers into UPS's. we power them with DC directly from the batteries.
The entire office is run off the batteries which are continuously charged by inverters powered by commercial AC and a backup diesel generator which is tested monthly. 99.999 % reliable. - 4ndr3wk, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1http://youtube.com/watch?v=vCfJkz2VNUQ&fmt=18
Seeing as i cant get Cnet video player to work - vw2005, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1... a whole series of them.
- nurriz, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1That's really impressive. Nice video. Kind of puts the datacenters I've been to in perspective :)
- scaper, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1yes it does, well at least it did.
They were in the building to the left of coming into the complex, not the main hosting building. - GRat, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1I went to their San Jose data center several years back to install my company's software along with an associated server (Equinix was one of our clients). The only thing was that the server was a standard PC that we plugged in amongst the myriad of blade and high-end rack servers. It was pretty laughable to have this high tech security and unbelievable infrastructure supporting this simple server. Either way, the facilities were some of the most impressive that I've ever seen.
- inactive, on 06/18/2008, -0/+1... EQUIPMENT THAT I DID NOT PAY FOR!
- odyss3y, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1Yeah that looks like the Great Oaks location. It was always nice to do work in there. The video games were definitely good stress relief. I never used the showers or anything else, though. Actually that video is dated in 2006 and I think I was there the day they were actually filming there. I thought it was for a movie until I asked and it was for some kind of promo.
- inactive, on 06/18/2008, -0/+1no ***** dumbass. i more meant (even though i said nothing about this) that i'd like to be there, and toy with all that equipment for one day.
- Totz83, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1GF? yeah right! =P
- jsmcbride, on 06/18/2008, -0/+1Geeee-Zuss! I hope you're joking!!!!!
- sammydeath, on 06/18/2008, -0/+1so they are easily replaced...
unlike testicles - JSolo, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1Looks like the great oaks, san jose facility to me.
Equinix facilities are the most non descript buildings ever. I've been to a few of them in San Jose, SF and Virginia and you'd never even notice them if you drove by. -
