- ajamer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+41sadly, the inclusion of these damned "f lock" keys has seriously decreased my usage of the F buttons (especially in games)
- JeffreyAtW, on 10/12/2007, -3/+30I hear that if you hold down Alt+F4 while using Firefox, the 5-page essay you just wrote into that form will be automatically spell-checked.
- negativefx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21PRESS F10 FOR GODMODE!!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+25no, it's alt + f4 for god mode!
- porkstacker, on 10/12/2007, -5/+23Wouldn't a better title be something along the lines of, "F1 - F12: A list of what your keyboard's function keys do on a PC running Windows"...
??? I think so. - TomP, on 10/12/2007, -5/+22F9 - F12 controls expose ;)
- Troopy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19F7 toggles caret browsing in firefox...
Sorry just thought firefox was being left out, with ie getting mentioned. - threepio, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17What about F13-15?
What do you mean your keyboard does't have them? That's almost like saying that keyboards don't come with an eject key... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16"F10
F10 is the key that is used to activate the menu bar in many programs. You can use F10 to highlight the first menu choice, and then use the arrow keys to move around the menus. Pressing the Shift key while pressing F10 will bring up the shortcut menu. This is similar to right-clicking on an object."
I thought it gave you free money + ammo + enabled h4x - Chebyshev, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10You've used a computer for 20 years and never pushed the F keys to see what they do? Honestly?
- 10001110101, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8This would have been way cooler if it had explained what the keys did "back in the days of DOS". What good is it knowing that "The F12 key does not have any functionality in Windows"?
- maklershed, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Do any of these keys start my game of Oregon Trail on my Macintosh?
- Ezku, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6You guys clearly boot way too often.
- idonthack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6On the off chance that you're serious...
Ctrl+C is copy
Ctrl+V is paste
Ctrl+X is cut - honorablesauce, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I agree. I cuss the f-lock button daily. (You would think I would learn though)
- LucasVB, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6The F keys are actually a dial (much like in Stargate) that can be used to open a portal from your screen to any other screen in the world.
- JeffreyAtW, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I care a whole lot about which articles appear on the front page of a website!
- Twinked, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Hit the F10 key then F then C. Should fix all the problems you have in Internet Exploder.
- Wilson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5ajamer: Link to instructions on killing the F Lock key: http://weblogs.asp.net/jgalloway/archive/2005/11/29/431762.aspx
- spacebar14, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Note to self: Never, ever, EVER buy another keyboard with an f-lock.
- sumadartson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3On linux: ctrl+alt+f1-6 switches to different virtual terminals. Ctrl+Alt+f7 generally brings back the gui.
Great when X freezes, or when trying to scare someone new to linux. - itanshi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Apparently played 'trick the noob' plenty. Wonder what his success rate is for that.
- toaplan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Anyone know of a good way to disable help when hitting F1? I tend to hit it instead of esc when I try to close various dialogs in visual studio .net....
- Mambo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3AMEN! I don't know how many times I have deleted something, then went to rename something with F2 only to have the deleted thing become undeleted, and me left sitting there wondering why the thing won't rename.
Then I realize the F-lock key is off, and have to go find/remember where that file is that I wanted deleted that is now back!
GRR!! - FastZ, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Yeah. Honestly. All you need is the letters and numbers for anything I've ever used a computer for, well those and the mouse. I'm not a gamer so that rules that option out. I use Alt+F4 quite often and F8 to reach the boot menu and F5 to refresh the browser window, but that's about it for the function keys. I don't mind having to do things the "hard" way and use the mouse to switch windows or to hide the menu bar. I'm not dogging those who use the function keys, I'm just saying that I just don't use them so therefore I don't know what they do.
And the 20 years of computer use was a rough exaggeration, but since I'm still "a young'n", computers have been a part of my life for almost all of it. Just in case someone wanted to flame me for some reason on that. :) - limewood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3ctrl-f along with alt-n (for next) and alt-p (for previous) is much easier than F3
- Ryosen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I dunno. On my windows machines, ctl-alt-F12 brings up the command console.
- thewebguy, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8actually f12 controls dashboard
- Captin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Look at the tool, AutoHotKey, lets you remap keys... could make the F1 key pop a message box: You did it again!
http://www.autohotkey.com/ - Protoss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Or the problems you're having with that current tab in Firefox :P
- finkployd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Would it have helped if they also explained how to disable the caps lock key for you?
Hey, at least this article had content. - SDNick484, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I use Gnome in Linux, and by default its window manager, Metacity (as well as Compiz in Xgl), has some useful functions:
Alt+F1 -> Main Menu
Alt+F2 -> Run Dialog
Alt+F4 -> Close Window
Alt+F5 -> Restore Window (eg. after maxamizing)
Alt+F9 -> Minimize Window
Alt+F10 -> Maximize Window
There's quite a few others, but one of the things I hate most about Windows XP is the lack of a way to maximize a window from the keyboard. - SrLnclt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just fixed my blasted F-Lock issue on my old Logitech Keyboard a couple days ago. The registry hack was close, but kills some of the media buttons and stuff.
Make sure your iTouch Driver is the most current (this was half my issue). Then turn F-lock on and go in the options and for set the function for each F key to "keystroke" and hit the correct key (i.e. assign F7 to the key F7 key instead of print). This still allows the media play/stop/next keys to work but makes the function keys work right no matter if F-Lock is off or on. All the combos (Alt + F4 work too). - dorxincandeland, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I'll be using F3 alot in firefox... who knew?
oh... everyone... why didn't anyone tell me? - itanshi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1is that like having your ctrl button stick in the on position? Least i know that pain, mm
- daridave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1very useful for those who didn't know. Should have mentioned the f5/f7 quick Save and Load :P ehe..
- surfing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I like this one:
Undocumented tip: If you are using Windows XP and Word XP or Word 2002, put your cursor in the middle of some text in a Word document and press the Windows Key plus S at the same time to hear your computer read to you!! - vibri2001, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1As much as lists/articles of this type seem to be common knowledge there always seems to be one I didn't know. F2 to rename files will be very useful for me.
- baalzebub, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2i use the keyboard often, the F1 thru F10 are used often with GNU Midnight Commander (mc) one of the most versitile directory and file browser/editors on the planet for GNU/Linux (works in both a GUI terminal and CLI shell)...
- tico24, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2So the moral of the article is "go look it up in the help files of the program you are running." Useful(!)
- BIGmog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1/ and ' are much easier than ctrl-f.
- rouben, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'd say most end-users should be taught to use (and abuse) the F1 key instead of calling the tech support department with the dumbest posible questions.
- biffsputnik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1TOP ROWED!!!!!
- itanshi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yay more noob hunting, at least i hadn't heard this one
- praveenmarkandu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i like Ctrl+Alt+F1
- xmilky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1More interesting to our fellow Windows™ users probably is, that the so called "menu key" is technically (by raw keyboard code enumeration) F15 and the oh-so-useful "Windows keys" are F13 (left) and F14 (right one, IIRC).
- mikeazorin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Full size Apple keyboards go up to F16, that's probably nice for dashboard/expose since they've raped some applications' functionality.
- Rosco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1press F2 to kick the bastard off the server
- SDNick484, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1thewhitefedora,
Thanks, I was unaware of that; unfortunately after playing around with it for a minute I noticed it doesn't always work (eg. try using it in PuTTY). It seems alt+space calls the windows dialog box (the box you get when you click the top left corner of most apps); on apps that don't offer this box (or use a non-standard one), it doesn't seem to function. - RadiatedAnt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1HA! im using the spanish edition of winblows so its f10 A then C
