- subxero37, on 01/08/2009, -3/+67I was thinking, wow, the Core i7 965 is wiping the floor with this CPU. So I looked it up on NewEgg. Intel's chip is 3.68 times the price of AMD's chip ($1012 vs. $275). THIS is why this CPU is a big deal, because it's at a great price point and is still an incredibly solid competitor.
Also, AMD/ATI's 4800-series of graphics cards are absolutely amazing. The drivers are getting better and you simply can't beat AMD's usual price-performance ratio. - inactive, on 01/08/2009, -2/+45I still need to get a dualcore processor, lmao.
- flessa, on 01/08/2009, -0/+43DDR3 is coming with socket AM3 Phenom IIs in Q2 of 09.
- flessa, on 01/08/2009, -2/+36So glad to see AMD finally back in the processor business. I'm buying a Phenom II 940 as soon as they are available on Newegg.

- justincoombs21, on 01/08/2009, -3/+26DDR2 vs DDR3 is a joke. The actual difference is negligible- when considering the prices your paying. Your money is MUCH better spent on a higher CPU or better videocard.
unless you are talking with your nerd friends who are under the same impression that the magic '3' is SOOO much cooler than the old '2'. It simply isn't the case.
I think AMD is bang for the buck a better buy than the core 2 quad and especially the core i7. AMD rocked this chip- and for $275 for the 3.0ghz cpu and 8gb of ddr2 for only 120$ with a 100$ MB this is gonna rock.
that same setup with the core i7- while prolly about 20% faster- definitely is NOT 20% more- try 200%.
Go with AMD if you want an extra 200-300$ to spend on a bigger monitor, a better videocard or beer for 3 months- either way your $$$$ is better spent. - justincoombs21, on 01/08/2009, -2/+23that isnt the question- the quesiotn is- is a core i7 really 200% faster- when it costs 200% more- the answer is NO. why spend all that extra money ona a MB and ddr3- when u can have only a 20% performance drop- for 1/2 the price!
imagine this:
core i7, ati 4850 and 60fps in crysis
Phenom II, ati 4870 x2 and 120 fps in crysis.
SAME PRICE- you just spent your money where it shouldve been spent. - Jeepinator, on 01/08/2009, -0/+17Wait for DDR3 boards and socket AM3 next quarter.
- Jeepinator, on 01/08/2009, -2/+18AMD doesn't get near the amount of money Intel does. Intel has deals with every single manufacturer and has an overwhelming majority of market share. AMD is at a disadvantage and still manages to survive. They will make a comeback, just not during this recession. It'll be like the good old days where the Athlon 64s were smoking the Intel Pentium 4s.
- TiMMY8765, on 01/08/2009, -3/+18ddr3 is hella expensive.
- mshtml, on 01/08/2009, -1/+13You'll figure it out when you're are forced to buy a $250 board and $150 RAM for that i7 set up.
- divinediva, on 01/08/2009, -3/+15It began with the introduction of the Spider platform.
- Chadduss, on 01/08/2009, -0/+12Each core is clocked at 2.49 Ghz
- mshtml, on 01/08/2009, -1/+13Its better in some gaming benchmarks.
- likeyehokwhatev, on 01/08/2009, -0/+11I still need to get a processor :(
- UnWeave, on 01/08/2009, -0/+10Possibly because the games become GPU-bound? Or start to become, at least.
- JerzyBricklayr, on 01/08/2009, -14/+24I love AMD, but DDR2??!!!???
- CLShortFuse, on 01/08/2009, -6/+16Wow, i7 blows this out of the water. But the real question is the performance/price ratio.
$275 for Phenom II x4 940 (3.0ghz)
$1000-$1100 for i7 3.20ghz
It may look weaker if you do the benchmarks you can get 2 CPUs (count the cores!) for less than an the i7's price. I'm not sure if it'll beat it, but i'm sure if you buy 4 Phenom II x4 940's it'll destroy one i7 chip.
Now, the question is finding a reasonably priced dual socket (or even quad socket) motherboard. If you find an AM2+ one, it'll be DDR2 but AM3 socket will be DDR3 - inactive, on 01/08/2009, -3/+12huh..looks so awesome..i cant afford it anyway.. :|
- Sage920, on 01/08/2009, -0/+9It's getting cheaper.
- mshtml, on 01/08/2009, -2/+11As the resolution increases Phenom II actually gets faster compared to Core i7 and Core 2.
- Jeepinator, on 01/08/2009, -1/+10Not without DDR3...but it's plenty powerful especially considering how much cheaper it is.
- Grummond, on 01/08/2009, -5/+14According to the various reviews, the Phenom II 920 is very close to the Core i7 920 in gaming.
And you forgot to factor in the total cost of the platform, (mobo+RAM+higher power usage).
Don't worry, it's a very common mistake. - Arkz, on 01/08/2009, -1/+10What is this processor you speak of? my system has an AMD Abacus...
- Chalks777, on 01/08/2009, -1/+9As much as I would love to have top of the line parts, the main reason that I built my computer with AMD has been summed up perfectly by this article. All I need to do is replace my current phenom processor with this one, and I've got a pretty significant upgrade. Waaay cheaper than buying a new mobo, new memory, _and_ a new processor. Doing things one piece at a time is much easier on the wallet.
- EnigmaOX, on 01/08/2009, -1/+9It's already on Newegg
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N8 ... - aussieNickuss, on 01/08/2009, -0/+8What's with people putting the $ sign after the numbers? I'm seeing it more and more on digg these days.
- justincoombs21, on 01/08/2009, -0/+8absolutely true. The motherboard and DDR3 ram is ridiculous at his point. Your paying 200% more for a 20% gain- Do the math people- and your money is much better spend in the AMD camp!
- Grummond, on 01/08/2009, -0/+8True, but then again, the Phenom II 940 is unlocked too. and it's only $270. And seems to be an excellent overclocker.
- jonathandyer, on 01/08/2009, -0/+8You didn't put any thought into that comment did you?
- mshtml, on 01/08/2009, -4/+12All that Dragon Platform talk and they screw the pooch by benching with a GTX280? On the plus side of the review Phenom II looks like a monster performer for the price.
- dafragsta, on 01/08/2009, -3/+10I haven't had an Intel CPU since my Celeron 300a, that said, you can bet your ass that I'm replacing my AMD64 X2 4800+ with an i7. Why would you even think about buying AMD, when the i7 920 is comparably priced to the high end Phenom and it's certainly considerably faster.
- gcnaddict, on 01/08/2009, -2/+9It's called having a balanced, unbiased platform.
nvidia doesn't like Intel nor AMD, so benching an Intel/nvidia v. AMD/nvidia is much more fair than, say, Intel/AMD v. AMD/AMD. - solid12345, on 01/08/2009, -2/+8Stop saying hella!
- ErdyNorth, on 01/08/2009, -1/+7it's good to see AMD coming back up. hopefully they'll compete better with intel soon to make the market more competitive...
- counterplex, on 01/08/2009, -0/+6Everyone knows it's all about powers of 2 in the computer world. AMD is just waiting for DDR4.
- stanggt3, on 01/08/2009, -4/+10Great to see AMD back in the chip race.
Wish this would run on my asus crosshair mobo though - lateralus, on 01/08/2009, -0/+5Not too many frugal, recession-conscious techies would shell out for i7 + expensive intel motherboard + expensive ddr3 just for a 6% bump in overall performance.
In that regard I would call this release a success if these numbers hold true: it improved upon the previous Phenom and is still relatively inexpensive. I'm not exactly dying to get rid of my 8GB of DDR2, and I for one refuse to ever pay more than $120 for a motherboard. I welcome the Phenom II overlords. My 4 cores will be sitting idle 95% of the time anyway....98%, if it weren't for Digg's excessive ads.
But that's just one opinion. - inactive, on 01/08/2009, -1/+6interesting - throw in some actual links/numbers, and you're correct in my book.
- EnigmaOX, on 01/08/2009, -1/+6from here
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/phenom-ii-940, ...
Intel i7 920 is 22% faster
while the price is 4x higher than Phenom II X4 940 Black Edition - Grummond, on 01/08/2009, -1/+6RTFA. The Phenom II beats out it's Intel counterpart at the same price point.
This has been confirmed in several other reviews.
Add the fact that the mobo and RAM are considerably cheaper, and AMD has a winner on their hands. - mshtml, on 01/08/2009, -1/+6Is that 22% with turbo on? If i7 is overclocked with turbo, Phenom II should be overclocked as well imo, it is a black edition after all.
- zlatinb, on 01/08/2009, -0/+5Sometimes people use computers for things other than games.. but you make a valid point
- matthekc, on 01/09/2009, -0/+5pff... intel 386 and 640k FTW!
- Chicken, on 01/08/2009, -2/+7Hopefully they'll come out with better ones soon to combat the i7s.
- Grummond, on 01/08/2009, -1/+5If you don't factor in cost, you're almost right.
- Chalks777, on 01/08/2009, -0/+4Read. The. Article.
- Aceman196, on 01/08/2009, -0/+4I love AMD but what really matters to me is competitiveness. People may not like AMD but if Intel is out there by them selves they can charge what ever they want.
- UnWeave, on 01/08/2009, -0/+4What the *****? That makes negative sense.
- inactive, on 01/09/2009, -0/+4OPTI-RAM will kill DDR5 before it gets to the shelves.
