- MemphisExNoel, on 09/22/2008, -2/+20Absolutely true... but bare in mind if AMD just redesigned Athlon XP to compete with the Atom CPU intel had to start from the beginning (the power-hungry Pentium 4 was not a wise solution)
- lonewolfe, on 09/22/2008, -2/+16Can't wait for Quad-core atom
- megamod, on 09/22/2008, -1/+10for modularity/granularity's sakes...this SUCKS.
Broke a pin or is your integrated NIC card on your mobo misbehaving? OH WELL buy a whole new one! - Icetype, on 09/22/2008, -1/+10I don't know why people disrespect the Atom so much. It's great for netbooks, which is really it's target. If the next gen netbooks using this chip also gain the DDR2 667 and gigabit that the dev board has, that would be fantastic. Atom is young. The Pentium 60 was nothing to the 233mmx. I can't wait.
- Jhiaxuz, on 09/22/2008, -0/+9Up' an Atom!
- HonoredMule, on 09/22/2008, -0/+9HT and dual core are not mutually exclusive features. This is dual core AND HT.
- Elranzer, on 09/22/2008, -0/+6With a soldering iron, everything is user-servicable.
- Icetype, on 09/22/2008, -0/+6.
- MagicHobo, on 09/22/2008, -1/+7Up and at them!
- KMartSheriff, on 09/23/2008, -0/+5Good point.
- kdesu, on 09/22/2008, -0/+5"Atom 330 and Atom 230 share the same feature set and clockspeed, but Atom 330 is a HyperThreading-enabled dual-core part."
- Phoros, on 09/22/2008, -0/+4Fail.
- Murdats, on 09/22/2008, -0/+4I am under the impression these are for notebooks, in which case if either of those happen on a notebook you are generally screwed anyway, hell if an intergrated is screwed you generally need to buy a new one if its screwing with the rest of the mobo anyway, even on a desktop
edit: having looked up what nettop means (stupid term) I now see the purpose of this, it just sounds like a bundle deal, not a physically joined single part. - megamod, on 09/22/2008, -0/+4"As we've mentioned before, the Atom 330+D945GCLF2 motherboard is strictly a desktop/nettop solution."
I haven't seen any other info on this but from the article I would think it's for desktops and that it's physically joined or not meant to be taken apart as easily. At least that's what I think of when I hear that something is "integrated". - contradictator, on 09/22/2008, -0/+3Zee Goggles! They do NOTHING!
- Fergy, on 09/22/2008, -0/+3An 1.6Ghz Atom is on par with a 1.2Ghz pentium m. Do you really think a K6 or even an athlon can compete with a pentium m?
- JackNco, on 09/22/2008, -0/+3not if the BIOS doesn't support it.
- GhostM, on 09/22/2008, -0/+3*Aspire One
- renegadeafk, on 09/22/2008, -0/+2Dude! That's like, so awesome!
- musntSurfatWork, on 09/22/2008, -0/+2I'll wait for the Molecule.
One can wait forever in laptops, I know I have, I'm itching to buy one now, and I do believe now is a good time, featuring HDMI ports for easy connectivity to large LCD screens, .. but makes you wonder how low the prices are coming down, with electronics getting cheaper than paper... - forthex, on 09/22/2008, -0/+2I was very tempted this week to buy an Acer Inspire One...
Now, I will wait some more. - drgruney, on 09/22/2008, -0/+2Integrated Network Interface Card card.
Also... is it still a card if it's integrated?
I can't remember the list time I had integrated hardware fail.
It's cheaper to have it all integrated than buying them all separate too. - dualboy24, on 09/22/2008, -0/+2What happened to everyone on digg? Where are the miles of replys to a tech article? I think all of the nerds have left... could explain the lack of tech related topics.
- Slovenian6474, on 09/22/2008, -3/+4Think i'd be more interested in AMD's upcoming Atom competitor.
http://www.hardware.info/en-US/news/ymickpqawp2ab5 ... - rockefeller2, on 09/22/2008, -0/+1Do you observe any of the following with your Aspire One:
1. when the screen is at lower brightness, do you see alot of screen flicker? Seems like it happens with hard drive activity, as if the battery doesn't have enough capacity to drive both the hd and screen.
2. there is a verticle band down the middle of the screen that I see sometimes that is just slightly darker than the rest of the screen?
I was just wondering if anyone else is experiencing this. - Chicken001, on 09/23/2008, -0/+1Exciting. EeePC 1100H
- robbiedo, on 09/23/2008, -0/+1Intel "says" the dual core won't be coming to netbooks, only the stupidly named "nettops." I suspect Acer will shoehorn this silicon into a netbook. There is too much geek demand for it to sit in the parts bin.
- rickweasel, on 09/22/2008, -0/+1Haha I'm right there with you buddy. Damn that sucks.
- daschupa, on 09/22/2008, -0/+1I think it will be a while until they get them in the low cost laptops due to their power consumption...or at least I hope so since I just put an order in for a Dell Mini 9.
- jleems86, on 09/22/2008, -0/+1Damn, and i just got an EEE901. i wonder if the ATOM chips are user-serviceable like in desktops. hope i can just swap out for a new chip
- idano, on 09/22/2008, -0/+1I bought one last week for my wife and they are awesome.
- Spire3660, on 09/22/2008, -0/+1Until intel lifts some of the silly restrictions on the platform, i wont be biting. No PCI-E mini allowed on Atom boards.
- inactive, on 09/22/2008, -0/+1My Intel D945GCLF2 is waiting for me at home. Will have some hands-on Atom 330 experience tonight. I bought this primarily to begin cutting the power utilization of my home "data center". This will very likely be the foundation of my new mail/web server, replacing a Sun Netra T1 105.
- inactive, on 09/22/2008, -0/+1this Atom is a physical-dual core and HT enabled...buried as you're an idiot.
- UnaClocker, on 09/22/2008, -1/+2I recently built a hackintosh with the current 230 based Atom unit. Ran like a champ! I was even able to run WinXP inside of Parallels at a usable speed. I was quite impressed with it. I also sold it at a profit on CL. I look forward to building one with this new chip.
- Echosphere, on 09/22/2008, -0/+0I was a mac user before the switch to Intel but we all knew the Centrino was miles above the mobile PowerPC chips and I really like the Core2Duo in my MacMini. Just the right speed without too much heat (fan noise). Graphics card ain't that great though...
Anyways, is the Atom a proper evolution to the C2D? Is it going to be an Itanium or a good compromise between energy consumption & power?
I am still curious why Apple isn't going to use it in the iPhone. - megamod, on 09/22/2008, -1/+1I can. My dog chewed my gf's iPod USB cable. From there on none of her USB ports worked and until I disabled it in BIOS it would always crash her computer with 100% CPU usage.
btw...Redundancy is everywhere. get used to it:
CRC check (cyclic redundancy check)
ATM machine (automatic teller machine)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAS_syndrome ("redundant acronym syndrome" syndrome) - dualboy24, on 09/22/2008, -1/+1Well the new atom has dual core plus hyperthreading. Thats close enough for me, i mean why do you need quadcore for a processor that is used for netbooks. It isnt a highperformance chip.
- mrstoneok, on 09/23/2008, -0/+0They all got sick of the comments like the ones above and stopped reading the comments (but still read the articles, hence 769 diggs {at time of reading}).
- kozEfx, on 09/22/2008, -0/+0If you observe #1 from the post above, get the new bios.
http://www.aspireoneuser.com/2008/09/17/bios-v3304 ...
Always keep up on bios updates, especially with new pc models.
Never seen #2. Upgrade the bios and check it again.
By the way, you will need to set your disk startup priority to flash drive in setup (hit F2 when booting up), and you will need a boot formatted flash stick.....there are utilities out there that will do this, but i don't have the link right now. google it. - damack, on 09/22/2008, -13/+11Ahtlon XP sucks a 300 million dollar super computer kicks its ass!
See what I did there, it's called talking out of your ass when you have no knowledge of what you speak of.
An atom is designed to go into devices that fit in your palm while the K6's are full desktop chips so unless you want to carry your computer around the Atom is better suited to the job of a portable.
It's idiots like you that make it hard to feel sorry for AMD right now. - MMaster23, on 09/22/2008, -4/+1Ok Let's count how many times the word Apple or Mac appears in this Ars article.. the damn fanboys they are..
- StupotAce, on 09/22/2008, -6/+3I think that netbooks should be carrying underclocked AMD CPU and not Atom CPUs, which is Atom's primary sales right now. The Atom CPU has too high of a power consumption to be used in anything handheld at the moment, so your argument doesn't really hold up.
The only reason Atom is selling well because it's new and shiny and people want it, not because it is actually better. - HonoredMule, on 09/22/2008, -6/+1U'pan, eat him!
- inactive, on 09/22/2008, -18/+13Atoms chips suck. even the old AMD k6 kicks its ass for performance and all-in power usage efficiency. (Check engadget)
too much marketing, not enough engineering. - Rudegar, on 09/22/2008, -6/+1Intel made it dual-core by sending 2 atoms into the Large Hadron Collider
unfortunate it did some damage to the helium container (which was there mainly for ***** and giggles at their xmas party) - wgdz, on 09/22/2008, -6/+1ready alanr-19's comment a few posts up... for the lazy: basically atom engineering architecture is not up to par being a newer chip and all. The very old AMD k6 wins in performance and power usage efficiency. Though with enough marketing to make it sound all good, intel could pull it off, though seriously they should have designed a better chip to start off with...
- DudeOverdosed, on 09/22/2008, -9/+3how about quad-core double atom with a side of steroids XD
