- coderdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3are you kidding? that's totally got practical uses! imagine playing a game with your friend that would normally be split screen, but now you both get full screen views depending on your angle! rock on!
- mcl768, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i wonder how it looks when you look right at it
- dandiemer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0well, i think it could be very practical givin the size of the display.
In a desktop computer application this could essentally give you the perception of space of a dual monitor display. - teknophil1ac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ha, you could also potentially mask what you're doing from nosey bosses/coworkers.
- will-rom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Article shouldn't have mentioned TV... terrible use. Think about not having to buy one of those $500 add on privacy filters. That what this is really good for. Keeping nosy peoples eyes out of sensitive data. You could put a "Stop looking at my screen" message on the off axis display. Very practical if you think of the right uses.
- hadees, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Cool but not really practical
- cmallette, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wow thats so cool :)
- titan77, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I agree with coderdude, this with gaming would be awesome. I was having trouble thinking of a practical use but it would be perfect for gaming with two players. No more of that annoying split screen can't see what your doing crap.
- Tullamore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Only good if you don't want to hear what is going on.
- MegaMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I also have to concur that the gaming use and "privacy filter" use of these technology would be amazing.
For gaming it would not only get rid of split screen multiplayer but it would also get rid of screen watching that accompanies split screens. And as a privacy filter you could sit there doing your work while anybody passing by sees whatever you decide to display on that virtual screen. - BT-Wang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0directional sound devices exist. it could be done. but that's overkill considering the expense of the devices and the existence of headphones.
- SupaDawg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+01 word.
cool - bradrmattison, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Responding again to some of the dual monitor comments:
This could give two people dual monitors with only three monitor--and only one with this technology. One of these in the middle, and two regular monitors on either side. This could save a lot of money considering those who have dual monitors usually have nice monitors for creative work. - b0urn3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yes, but by placing a Paralax barrier inside, the color yellow fades.
wow, that was an obscure comic book reference - thenoise, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0headphones would work fine for sound.
or maybe this technology will be paired with that selected sound waves technology that is being worked on; where you direct sound at only one person.
but this would be great for gaming in general - cheewl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0haha, maybe a combination of both displays?
- Funkly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yeh but what about the sound....
- test5477, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0very cool, if they could get the specific speakers that project to one spot. then you could watch one channel and someone else could watch something else...

digg stripped my link - dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It looks nifty, but how would I look at two pornographic videos at once?
- wjm0139, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is most likely based on the same technology Sharp used to create their 3D LCD. It's basically just two TFT LCD monitors seperated by a parralax barrier(lens). On the 3d version it would send a different image to each eye resulting in a 3D effect. Reviews were pretty sketchy though... alot of people complained it made their eyes hurt/

:/ i submitted first :/ - ajb2015, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0cool but not worthy of paying extra for.
- tikz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0only reason I can see for this is gaming like mention above... still cool idea though
- alpha7q, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What. The. *****.
Stupidest idea, ever. sooo unpractical, and it'll be so troublesome for the first few ones that come out...ugh, - jzahra, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is really cool to think about, but it can't replace a dual monitor setup. With dual monitors you can see *both* at the same time, and to me that's the whole point of having two. Otherwise, you can just switch between the windows on the same monitor. Like others are saying, big time possibility to be implemented in privacy situations.
Absalon's video is interesting. It's almost replacing the table in that case, with people sitting around it. Why not just play real cards then? lol - AlienTiger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://digg.com/technology/Single_Screen,_Dual_Monitor
oops wrong link :P - metalrock76, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0sweet!
- snowboarder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Cool but not really practical"
It is practical, in vehicals - GPS for driver, DVD passenger.
Tv - Watch two channels (headphones for both people ofcourse) - bradrmattison, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I attempted to patent this 2 years ago. I actually used a different technique than Sharp is now using, but it was still very similar. My concepts used holographic technology, and they use forms of mirrors. I was not specific enough in my technology and did not have the resources to do this with LCDs while still maintaining the integrity or their profile. I did not receive the patent, but I have inquired recently about their attempt to do this. You will actually be able to adjust the angles which the light is viewed at, and this will not be a strict angle, but a viewing region of up to 38 degrees from the pixel. It will be important to restrict glare on this style of LCD, as light can compromise the true colors immensely. Already they plan to allow for more than 2 angles to be viewed, but processing power rarely supports this on today's computer or TV graphics chipsets.
As for the audio-- it's not very complicated to use omni directional speakers. Granted, this technology would have to be improved upon quite a bit. - wjm0139, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0FOLLOW UP:
http://digg.com/technology/Dual_View_LCD_Finds_First_Customer_-_General_Motors - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I would assume maybe you can disable the dual view effect, so that looking straight-on doesn't look odd.
- JohnWPB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Imagine the Gaming Possibilities! No more "Split screen" top and bottom racing games. Of course it would take a gaming console that would output dual displays.
Or used in a console arcade game, 2 players could play a quake type game against each other. Kewl technology for sure... - Billybones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0In a game like quake, you could look actually around corners by leaning sideways. Very cool.
- Absalon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i got a video up on my site i took at nextfest that's very similar but it actually works four ways. and it's touchsenstive. in the clip you can see people playing hearts.. on the four sides of the tv.. notice the text on the screen switches depending on which way your looking at it.
someone please mirror this i have about 2gb transfer on my server so it probably won't be up for long.
