- inactive, on 07/03/2008, -4/+90They have to price cut it, because considering bang for buck...the ATI 4870 kicks its ass.
You can get 2 ATI 4870 for $600 which will get this....run crysis on very high at 40 fps on a 24 inch monitor. Thats 1920 by 1200 ladies and gentlemen. - Akraz, on 07/04/2008, -3/+49Epic fail to anyone who bought GT280 at release.
- Hellothere123, on 07/04/2008, -1/+43Geforce GTX 260 is still more expensive than Radeon HD 4870 ($350 vs $300), and it's usually slower.
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/radeon-hd-4870 ... - m60dude5, on 07/03/2008, -8/+50This article saved me, I was just ready to buy.
- evil-doer, on 07/04/2008, -1/+41bah, i got my radeon hd 4870 yesterday, i love it :)
- inactive, on 07/04/2008, -2/+28Old school TNT RIVA 32mb !!
- Jenga, on 07/04/2008, -8/+33Sure the 4870 is a good value for games, but I can justify the 280GTX as a business expense because of CUDA. No need for that 16 CPU Dell mini-cluster anymore!
- mshtml, on 07/04/2008, -2/+27AMD launched superior products with the 4800 series that forced prices cuts from Nvidia. So you see, the article didn't save you, AMD did. Even after the price cut the 4850 and 4870 are better buys. Support competition here by buying the better product.
- inactive, on 07/04/2008, -0/+24People PLAY crysis? I'd just put it on to admire the graphics.
- Serenikill, on 07/04/2008, -5/+27Doesn't look like the price cut will be drastic enough to get the 260 over the 4870... and the 280 is just a ridiculously expensive card for what it is. Not even direct x 10.1, fail Nvidia... fail.
- dullnation, on 07/04/2008, -1/+22That's what made me wary about getting a 4850. Everyones mantra (who doesn't own an ATI card) seems to be, "their drivers suck".
I subscribed to this idea too but I upgraded from an 8600gt to a 4850 and I haven't had any issues with it at all thus far. I think it's one of those rumors that has been kept alive for a very long time with no real substance... - tatinthehat, on 07/04/2008, -1/+22The Radeon 4850 and the Radeon 4870 still has a better price/performance ratio.
Actually, you probably should wait until the Radeon 4870 X2 is released in August, you'll see the GTX 260, 280 and the 9800GTX to drop once in price once again to compete.
The consumer wins! - inactive, on 07/04/2008, -0/+20*woosh*?
- ToxNub, on 07/04/2008, -0/+19Until Nvidia comes out with another 2 in one solution card, the 4870X2 is going to be the fastest card yet. And it's going to cost the same as one GT280, if price projections ring true.
Welcome back to the high-end, ATI! - Uchikoma, on 07/04/2008, -4/+23Heh, say they do cut it to 550. That's 1100 for two 280's together. Plus, you're going to need an upgrade to the PSU most likely. Why would I spend that much money (hell, you can buy a complete computer with that cash) just to get those extra 10 fps? Do most people need to run games at 1920x1200?
If there was no competition, then sure it might be reasonable to say that Nvidia can charge a premium. Clearly this is not the case. - PeterNorton, on 07/03/2008, -2/+20Yes, but I am wondering what will actually happening to the 9800 cards. There was no information on that. Does anyone have information on that?
- Emachine, on 07/04/2008, -7/+25Loosk like someone can't spell check.
- zumpiez, on 07/04/2008, -0/+17TG Daily: We Don't Have Copy Editors
- kjubik, on 07/04/2008, -6/+20And for HD 4870, GDDR5 gives more memory bandwidth -> more powwa with higher resolutions and AA.
- Soytaco, on 07/04/2008, -1/+14You can run Crysis at Max 1920x1200 at well over 40fps? What the *****. Do you have one of those 4x9800GTX set ups or something?
- renegadeafk, on 07/04/2008, -2/+13ATI's drivers are not any worse or better than nvidia's, this ridiculous rumor needs to die.
- Deviate, on 07/04/2008, -0/+10is the Radeon HD 4850 sufficient for modern gaming (decent levels with Crysis, FSX, etc.) or should I pay more for the 4870? I wouldn't use it a ton for gaming, but I definitely want to have the option.
- parallax7d, on 07/04/2008, -0/+10Yeah, 280 is only a good value if you play lots of company of heroes on a big monitor, it's roughly 2x as fast as the 8800GTX for that specific game at a large resolution. For everything else it's pretty fail. I'm gonna hold on to my 8800 GTX and skip ANOTHER generation of video cards it seems...
- kingUssop, on 07/04/2008, -0/+10Ati rules and I'm glad they finally made a comeback. Nvidia plays so dirty I'm just tired of them.
- musntSurfatWork, on 07/04/2008, -1/+11I'm happy it's ATI's turn to reap some benefits. They lost so much already with their mediocre 3650 series... and nothing to answer to the N8800GT... good timing ATI, stick it to them! +Finally some use for Crossfire technology on all those lonely P35 chipsets with dual pci-e
Who in their burnt minds are buying GTX cards now anyway? I guess, some people grow money on trees afterall. In all honesty, is there even any point now to buy into new hardware before D3, SC2, or RA3? - sjps220, on 07/04/2008, -1/+11I haven't ever spent more than 200 on a video card, but I still completely disagree with you.
- darkbob87, on 07/04/2008, -4/+14Maybe we should change this to "Don't EVER buy nvidia's GTX 200 series" because nvidia lies to consumers about faulty chipsets, plus that whole ATI's new cards being a better value thing, too. :o
- thecheatah, on 07/04/2008, -0/+9yup I had the same card. the fan doesnt spin anymore, and its still chugging along
- Stemnin, on 07/04/2008, -1/+10There was a price cut practically the day after the 4850 creamed all over it in reviews and Nvidia announced a 9800GTX+ which will be available in july (55nm, higher clocks, and higher price than a 9800GTX, still not worth it, though I do have a 9800GTX, oh the mistakes when being impatient!).
- inactive, on 07/04/2008, -1/+10....
wait a month and it will be half price. wait two months and they'll actually pay YOU when you pick one up. - XBSHX, on 07/04/2008, -2/+11I think that consensus was when ATI was it's own company, the drivers have improved greatly since AMD took over.
- mintblogger, on 07/04/2008, -2/+11Hard luck for all those guys, who've already bought them :(
- explnx, on 04/27/2009, -0/+9Half-Life 2 has a meaningful multiplayer/mod scene.
- tomhutchinson, on 07/04/2008, -0/+9Tell me about it. Good lord, someone must have been drunk when they typed that up.
- illt, on 07/04/2008, -0/+8this was great news for me...(buy buy buy!!!)
- Fergy, on 07/04/2008, -0/+8I had a Geforce 8800 GTS 320 MB and went to a Radeon 4850 512MB. Now I can play stalker on highest, supreme commander with 2 screens and crysis on 1920x1200 with shaders/physics/water on high(previously 1280x800 medium).
So yes, it is an awesome card especially for the money. - carl25, on 07/04/2008, -0/+8don't buy any of the 200 series cards, ati's 4xxx series destroy nvidia in price and performance ratio
- deroderugridder, on 07/04/2008, -1/+9that card sucked so hard - still can't believe I bought that one to upgrade my Voodoo Blaster 24 MB 3dfx :D
- renegadeafk, on 07/04/2008, -2/+9Epic fail for anyone who bought a GTX period.
- ExRe, on 07/04/2008, -0/+7I don't feel sorry for them. They were idiots. The 4870 is a much better deal than either the 260/280.
Better yet, pick up an 8800 GS/GT for $80-100. If you want high performance get 2 for SLI and it will be about as fast with a $160-200 price tag.
I learned my lesson when I bought a 6800 GT for $370 when it came out. Sure it kicked ass for a year, but now it is a $370 paper weight. - sjps220, on 07/04/2008, -0/+7I bought a 4850 and I'm glad I did.
Just go ATI! Its great that they're being this competitive! It means as consumers, we'll get much more for our money. - reedatschool, on 07/04/2008, -0/+7They may refuse to completely open source their drives but everyone knows that NVIDIA still runs way better under Linux with their proprietary drivers. It wasn't until this year that I could even recommend ATI cards for Linux due to 3D driver issues (mostly compiz issues really).
It will be interesting to see if ATI continues to support open source and how that will impact their use on free operating systems. - digiwand, on 07/04/2008, -0/+7This is just fantastic news for the gaming world. ATi's latest success is the kick in the pants nVidia needed, they were getting seriously carried away with card prices!
I saw the G280 this morning ranging from $450 after rebate to $730 on Newegg this morning. LOL
I wouldn't recommend the G2xx series to anyone right now, ATi is holding the winning hand and the winning card in the 4870. Just an incredible little graphics card, I haven't been this excited about ATi since the R300. (9700 and such. ;) ) - Disease, on 07/05/2008, -0/+7Are you from the future?
- lamiaconfitor, on 07/05/2008, -0/+7Or, anyone who just eats up bleedinng edge just for bragging rights.
- Jenga, on 07/04/2008, -1/+8Really? I use it to do FFTs in matlab every day. And one card in my workstation does it faster than the aforementioned 16 cpu cluster. Most computers aren't used for high-end 3D gaming, and CUDA has so many performance benefits in fundamental mathematics that it will find widespread application in everything from video encoding to computational finance. Its use is fairly transparent to programmers, unlike the complicated tuning required when programming for ATI GPUs.
- ParaSwarm, on 07/05/2008, -1/+8They did. It's called the 4870.
- inactive, on 07/04/2008, -0/+6For 1680*1050 it's sufficient, and it should overclock like a beast when compatible Riva Tuner or Ati Tool will come up. For 1920*1200 and upwards, a 4870 would be a better choice.
- XBSHX, on 07/04/2008, -0/+6If you have the cash to spend on the 4870, go for it. If not the 4850 will do you fine as long as you aren't using crazy high resolutions.
