- Technojunkie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Two quibbles: use Arctic Clean instead of alcohol to clean off the cheap heatsink grease if you can, and don't install the battery until after the notebook chassis is closed up. Otherwise, very cool. The MSI-1029 is a seriously tempting machine.
Note that MSI's 8 cell battery is only 4400mAhr, which is the same capacity as most of the 6 cell batteries that HP uses. Still, Turion MT's are very efficient so you should get decent battery life despite the high-end ATI GPU. - Gregd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wasn't there a service that you could use to mirror a website? I seem to remember one that came about because of /. Anyone?

it seems like more of a how to upgrade then to build - inactive, on 02/09/2009, -0/+1that is good news. if you need more laptop parts information. see here:

Sorry I'll pay the extra bucks and have IBM/Dell/Apple/whoever test all my components together and then warranty the whole shootin' match should it break. - SuidAfrikaner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this website has been gunned down by digg...err, I mean digged down...
- Darth_tater, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0its slow.. not down.
and i did this. and i have 2 say its worth it.
much cheaper - dhughes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Wasn't there a service that you could use to mirror a website? I seem to remember one that came about because of /. Anyone?"
.nyud.net:8090 - stormy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Looks like a lot of fun to build and the model they built seemed pretty sweet to me, but I would like to be able to make something a bit less expensive and with the "kit" starting at $800., I don't think it's in my very limited price range.
Good information and a great step by step guide. - master_of_fm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@kuru225
not misleading, you are just uninformed. this is the closest you can get to building a laptop short of having a multi-million fabrication facility. anyone that has been involved with system building knows this - FireRabbit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is just showing you how to put a drive/memory/etc. into an already built laptop. I want to know how to do the whole thing from scratch, including wiring up the LCD to the graphics controller. No digg.
- conedude13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@FireRabbit
Same here dude. I would like to know how to put the entire thing together and see how much you save instead of buying an $800 already-put-together shell where you just add the HD/memory/etc. But dugg anyway, its a begining. - AU542, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hmm.. this seems like a good idea... since i dont trust mass producted computers, and i dont really need a new desktop.
- Dispersion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+046 Diggs of front-pagedom and it's already dead. Meh, I wanted to read it, too.
- master_of_fm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0sorry that should read "buy theses", not "but these"
- master_of_fm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0beware though no support from manufacturer, they will refer you where you purchased your "notebook", and most likely you will only be able to but these online so good luck getting support. i had the option of doing this when my wife wanted a notebook, but i bought a fujitsu because of this reason
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"desktops are a thing of the past"
Well laptops might be getting popular, desktops are in no way being considered a thing of the past...if you want a gaming, or serious editing machine, a laptop just doesn't cut it... - dolby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I tried this once and burned down my house, my hands shake and me and a blow torch don't work. Plus my dog is missing a patch of hair on his back from when I burned him :-(
- grrreat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0the site has been dugg and now is officially buried.
- *Ica*, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Where would I get hold of a barebones laptop?
Preferably from a UK website. - dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Pff, not as good as http://www.daileyint.com/build/buildtoc.htm
....okay.. maybe it is :P
- Ben - master_of_fm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@slick rick
you made an assumption, and we all know what happens when you make an assumption (you make an ass out of you and umption) if you were ever a system builder you would know that graphics have never been changable on notebooks (except for one weird alienware, i think) but with the advent of pci express and express cards you will be able to someday - slick_rick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@master_of_fm
i guess you don't know about the dell inspiron 8x00 series. you could simply pull out the existing gpu and replace it with another compatible gpu. i'm expecting something like that when i hear "Do It Yourself Laptop..." - socket, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Not worth the money. Almost $1500 for a piece of *****. Makes me almost feel bad I paid $400 more and I got two times the laptop, from Dell no less. (I9300, 2.0 GHz, 1 GB DDR2 533HMz, 256MB Geforce Go 6800, 100 GB HD, 17 inch TrueLife UXGA, DVD+/-RW, 802.11 a/b/g)
- CorpT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No Digg. I want to fab my own parts like I do for a desktop. Oh wait, I bought parts for that and put it together just like this. N/m.
- TheStooge1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Not dead... just very slow.
Just waiting for the comments regarding saving the $100 on page 2 for XP and installing Linux... then waiting on the Mac folks to scream.. then the TI994A followers to explode citing that this doesn't have an expansion bay...then the Commodore peeps to....
Very cool Digg! - slick_rick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0meh
"Do It Yourself Laptop..." to me implies that i can choose the gpu without it coming preinstalled in the barebones system - TomJ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@thestooge1 - I can appreciate your instigation of an OS flame session. I'm going to go get my popcorn and beer.
@Darth_tater - thanks, I was just going to ask how many folks have actually done this type of operation and what they thought. - treelovinhippie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Where do you actually get parts for a barebone laptop?
- Wolfman~K, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this is sweet... can you say OS X 86 home brew powerbook????? yeah baby.

here is a word that you need to familiarize yourself with
PROPRIETARY
http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=PROPRIETARY - ninjathis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0WHERE IS HIS ESD STRAP?!
- nihilator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is a stretch for "Do It Yourself". What's the point if you can't configure everything, like most desktops? In particular, the video card. What if I prefer Nvidia?
- Nidobolt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Awesome site for laptops, I didn't know about this =o
Also, this guide was moderately entertaining. - loker269, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I just stumbled across this earlier today...guess I should have posted it lol
- microsoftpwner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0uh...ever see the tomshardware video over this, kinda old news
- master_of_fm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0@slick rick
you are an idiot, apparently you didnt read any of my previous comments, i mentioned that i thought there was an alienware notebook that you could do this with, i couldnt remember it was a dell. you are still assuming that you can change the graphics on a notebook. if you knew anything about computer hardware you that graphics do not have common pinouts and that being able to swapout gpus would be cost prohibitive. otherwise we would have desktop graphics cards that would allow you to pop out the gpu and pop in a new one using the same memory on the circuit board. I get sick and ***** tired of people whining because "oh i want it to do this, and it doesnt" boo ***** hoo. if people were smart and not ***** retarded like you they would realize the design limitation of making interchangeable graphics. hence one of the reasons why we have pci express in notebooks now, to address this problem. if you are going to post in a "technology" site, then ***** keep up with technology. and the Dell was not a do it your self notebook, so it doesnt ***** count. - olorinpc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I had a friend who built a whitebox laptop... i havent been able to track down the link yet - but if i recall he got an Asus chasis. Nice laptop and cut about a third off the price than if it had a brand name on it.
