- EtotheZ, on 02/13/2009, -10/+116I for one welcome our new toy block overlords
I love the part where he introduces their "youngest beta tester", saying how all he wanted to do was just stack the blocks up. I was waiting for him to say "but he's just a stupid baby" - TEDChris, on 02/18/2009, -4/+76The pic is wrong (don't worry about it) but the demo is hellish cool. David's pic is here: http://www.ted.com/index.php/speakers/david_merril ...
- Darksci, on 02/13/2009, -2/+62Just how expensive will it be though?
Its like back when we were kids, most of our parents wouldn't buy the illustrious $100 Lego Technic Pnumatic Truck because they just didn't have the money.
I hardly think this will be less than $100 - imaxami, on 02/13/2009, -0/+59even further, multi-sided (more than 4 sides) shiftables (octagons, etc) with each side representing a variable (from the db), then you can even go 3d, with multi-sided dies that, instead of rolling them for the random outcome, you roll them for the structured outcome. whee! sql queries meets D&D - never have i been so sickened at myself for loving a great idea.
- GrooTheWanderer, on 02/13/2009, -7/+63Who wants to bet every game requires at least 8 blocks and they only come in packs of 7?
- AndrewJC, on 02/13/2009, -0/+51The baby was getting just as much out of the siftables as he could, though, which is another interesting point: they'll grow up along with him, and the more he uses them, the more he'll be able to do with them.
In a way, it's perfect, because at any given point in time they can do exactly what he needs them to do, and they'll only become more interesting to him as he gets older. - quentinp, on 02/13/2009, -1/+52Oh great...next you'll be telling me these toys can self replicate!
- Endpoint, on 02/13/2009, -1/+41I quite like the name; you need something quite generic if they can do a whole bunch of different things. Fingers crossed the API or software that runs them is completely open.
- morninglorii, on 02/13/2009, -1/+41Now we have to figure out how to use them to make porn more fun.
- zip000, on 02/13/2009, -1/+27Well, I don't think this was meant to be an actual product; more like a demonstration of possibilities.
- fightforyou, on 02/13/2009, -1/+26does he look like a bitch?
- inactive, on 02/13/2009, -0/+20Replicators!! Anyone who is a fan of SG1 knows how that will turn out.
- imaxami, on 02/13/2009, -0/+18I can imagine APIs built around this concept, and building applications from these blocks. dunno - sql queries that build results in a clean ui (like the dog and cat)?
- praha, on 02/13/2009, -0/+15"... more than anything else, even great thinkers are wowed by a cool gadget."
Not a tough leap of thought. It's the great thinkers who quickly see potential in a cool gadget. - computershack, on 02/13/2009, -2/+16REPLICATORS......
- cJw314, on 02/13/2009, -0/+14How would that be different than current chess computer boards? Other than a thousand times more expensive, I mean...
- merdiesel, on 02/13/2009, -0/+14"As you can see here, as I tilt it to the side, she is now taking it up the ass."
::applause:: - woopdaritis, on 02/13/2009, -3/+17That was really quite amazing. There will be so many possibilities for those blocks.

- starsky51, on 02/13/2009, -0/+13Add GPS and some moisture sensors and scatter them around a farmer's field. Farmer gathers the data from his wireless mesh network to monitor his field from his living room.
To imagine useful applications, you have to first develop an imagination. - rusterman, on 02/13/2009, -2/+13Where can i get those? I want!
- je12u, on 02/13/2009, -0/+11Game cards STILL do not actually talk.
- slipkn0tz23, on 02/13/2009, -1/+11It has begun.
- DigaPony4, on 02/13/2009, -2/+12if porn isn't fun for you, then your doin it wrong.
- ShadowFoxxx, on 02/13/2009, -1/+10I loved it when you can make your own music with those things. You can bet when they come out on market (if they do, anyway), those are going to be the hottest techo-instrument. Damn that's amazing!
- bazzarr, on 02/13/2009, -0/+8And the ability to sense fear and recharge by ingesting animal flesh.
- iSamurai, on 02/13/2009, -2/+10I remember reading about this like a year a go on digg, cool to see how far they've come in that time.
- Nerolus, on 02/13/2009, -0/+8Is your person black?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p4OmQrzyLlE - ThirdPrize, on 02/13/2009, -0/+8Yeah, kids get all the good toys these days.
- supertom, on 02/13/2009, -0/+7What did you expect them to do? Jump around and throw a party?
- gbarger, on 02/13/2009, -0/+7I love the speak-n-spell noises. I spent a lot of time a child playing with that thing.
- billy1380, on 02/13/2009, -0/+7Technology
Siftables has undergone three hardware iterations and multiple software iterations, and now includes a Python API for simplified application development.
- dual AVR microcontrollers
- OLED displays
- 3 axis accelerometer with onboard data processing
- infrared transceivers and custom data protocol
- 64Mbit external flash memory
- Bluetooth Radio/Wireless networking
- Python
- C/embedded firmware
- plastic soft mold fabrication

- mcneillcc, on 02/13/2009, -1/+7It certainly would give legos a whole new twist,.....
- kalvinb, on 02/13/2009, -0/+6Many parents today grew up on video games so they're more likely to see the value in this type of thing and buy them.
Also kids can be more successful than their parents. My parents couldn't afford $100 toys for us but all four of their kids including myself grew up to be more successful than they were at our ages. So we can all afford $100 toys for our kids.
And often times I buy toys for myself. I'd be inclined to buy things like this because I'd want to play with them as well. - LittleGerms, on 02/13/2009, -0/+6They seem to be showcasing the innovative software capabilities of these blocks. I'm still hung up that those blocks exist. So much technology in such a small package!
- speed8500, on 02/13/2009, -2/+8Because the "adult world" need not concern itself with new ways to teach children? Drooling in front of a T.V. is a much better way to develop their brain. Just because you can't imagine a useful application, then clearly there isn't one. Right?
- inactive, on 02/13/2009, -0/+6Coming up with 'the' marketable application for these is going to make somebody very wealthy.
- wipis, on 02/13/2009, -0/+6WANT!
That and as I have started teaching English in Korea I could tell you that kids would kill to have a turn with these. - cam0man, on 02/13/2009, -0/+5no, dude. no.
- heyblue, on 02/13/2009, -1/+6It is your lack of imagination.
- burkay, on 02/13/2009, -0/+4@cJw314
I wasn't actually trying to come up with a practical product that you can sell and become rich. Being the computer scientist, I just enjoyed the idea of 64 independent processors working in parallel, trying to beat you in a game of chess. However, on the contrary to my initial reaction, I now believe that this is not quite exciting. Chess cannot be reduced to local strategies, any real strategy must know the whole board. Then we are down to evaluating separate branches of moves simultaneously in multiple processors, which I believe is nothing novel. - plhofmei, on 02/13/2009, -0/+4They totally f*cked the Asgard.
- aroedl, on 02/13/2009, -0/+4Just like the ReacTable: http://mtg.upf.es/reactable/
- jerrod73, on 02/13/2009, -0/+4I want these for my kiddos ASAP.
- ogenbite, on 02/13/2009, -0/+4Man, I wish I could be a kid now. Even my three-year old nephew has cooler toys than I ever did.
- cJw314, on 02/13/2009, -0/+4Is your person wearing a hat?
- skywake, on 02/13/2009, -0/+4@diggydougie
because if you play on a computerised chess board you could play against the board itself and it could potentially also give you playing hints.... but personally I think something like the MS surface would work better for chess. - ophello, on 02/13/2009, -0/+3You're dead wrong bud.
